I think the National Party’s election strategy is this-

Portray the Greens as stark raving mad examples of the far left and simultaneously associate them with Labour. This part is allied with the second part, which is to move National to the left to take Labour’s vote.

It might be a strategy that will win National an election, but the cost of this win will be a far left government anyway.

So nothing is really gained.

National needs an orator, a communicator, someone who has convictions regarding the party’s basic principles and can sell those principles to the voters. This orator has to be completely unafraid of the left wing media.

Finding a real leader who will sell and believe in and support the Nats founding principles is a much better strategy than the one I suspect they have chosen. But for it to work, it would need to be underpinned by courage and conviction. Things you just can’t find in the National Party today with John Key at the helm.

The word from Wgtn is apparently that there is a lot of rivalry between Collins and Joyce , that is that , Collins is jealous/angry/upset etc etc re all the publicity Joyce gets..Expect one or both of them to aim for the leadership.

I don’t agree with your last part Redbaiter. NZ politics is won in the centre. Going hard left or hard right is a loosing strategy. In John Key we have a pragmatist who with a solid team of what I would term high performing CEO’s on his flank is doing exactly what is needed in today’s global and local economy. In terms of social policy we have seen a consistent approach of carrot and stick. That works for the centre. In the case of the MRP float, yes many in the centre aren’t too chuffed with it BUT they are intelligent enough to know that selling down some assets instead of borrowing on a fickle international market was the better plan.
Sure we would like to see much tougher punitive measures in welfare reform but it is true that the real filth who take advantage of the tax payers generosity are on the margins. In fact the noise regardless of the issue comes from the margins. No matter how we look at it, the steady as she goes leadership has been the right way to go. (no pun intended)

It is interesting to follow the progress of pokie machine numbers in New Zealand. Figures from the Dept of Internal Affairs show that there was an 82% increase between June 1999 (the last count from when National was in power) and June 2003 when they peaked at over 25,000 (under Labour). Even more interesting is that Labour between 1999 and 2002 was in coaltion with the now-defunct Alliance, and the party was supported in matters of confidence and supply by the Greens.

Isn’t it funny that pokie machines are now the greatest evil known to mankind, despite Labour having rubber-stamped a deal giving SkyCity 230 more or them in return for a smaller convention centre than that currently proposed? It’s also amusing that the Greens had not discovered the power of the petition back then 😛

Collins is not the man Joyce is!
Collins is a bitch – there is no other word that adequately describes her. She would love the top job, but she will never get it. The leader has to be a fighter and strong, not given to tantrums, spitefulness, and must at all times display a level of decorum. Joyce has those attributes, Collins is minus everyone of them. She has ruined her own career, and will never gets what she aspires to – thank goodness.

It is refreshing to see that most of the school girl/boy crushes with Key have faded, and he is not the ‘hero’ that many people once thought he was. National need a new leader, once that is less of a show pony, and more of a strong kiwi bloke – I think Joyce has the attributes and not a bad cheeky smile, for those that fall for such attributes.

Here’s the sad facts:

Radhi, who was found living in South Auckland in 2011, was allegedly one of the key organisers of the boat later known as the SIEV (Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel) X.

The boatload of 421 asylum seekers sank in international waters south of Indonesia on October 18, 2001, en route to Australia’s Christmas Island.
Officials estimated 146 children, 142 women and 65 men drowned when the 19.5m fishing boat sank.

To be extradited to Australia to face trial, the Crown had to show there was a comparable offence in New Zealand law that Radhi had broken and that the offence was punishable by more than one year in prison.

Here’s the asshole lawyers ‘arguement’ :

Radhi’s lawyer Roger Chambers had argued the New Zealand law was not comparable as it was stated in terms of helping people “arrive” in New Zealand.

In the SIEV X no-one arrived or even entered extra-territorial waters, he said.

He pointed out that no illegal immigrants arrived in Australia, and that no aspect of the conduct attributed to Radhi was alleged to have occurred within Australia.

Well, he’s certainly a lawyer who can cross the T’s and dot the I’s on the words – immoral cunt! 😎

Which MMP change are you suggesting would affect any of those parties? Coat-tailing – not relevant to any of these parties at present. List and electorate – not relevant to any of these. What else is there?

While I am at it, can someone explain what is actually wrong with someone being on the List and in an electorate seat. Lets say 90% of the country votes for Helens party, but the good people of Mt Albert vote someone else in ie Helen is out of parliament. What happened to the other 90% of the votes who are now not getting what they wanted ie now they get David instead. Is that really (really?) what you want?

The Government’s role
Clearly, there are serious questions to be asked about New Zealand’s economic policy and how we got into this mess. Why was it not better designed and managed, and more focussed, coordinated and strategic? Did the electorate simply get what it voted for, without realising what was really happening, or have New Zealanders not been well served over the years?
Underlining the current difficult situation, the government is spending at an unsustainable level and running large deficits (the opposite of saving). As a result, it is borrowing a hefty $300 million a week. It needs to return the Budget to a surplus of no less than 2% of GDP as soon as possible.
Looking ahead over the next 20 years or so, the government will face increasing costs from the effects of an ageing population. If the government is to keep its borrowing within a sustainable level (as it must) over this period, its options are to: substantially increase tax revenue, reduce government spending, or increase government sector productivity and performance. The first two options are clearly unpalatable. However, modelling shows that if the government can lift its performance and increase productivity by 2% a year for five years and 1% thereafter, there would be no need to raise taxes or cut government services. The SWG strongly recommends this.
On other government policy issues, SWG recommendations include:
– A much more strategic and integrated approach to policy generally.
– Serious consideration of the impact of the level and variability of immigration on national saving, and the impact that this might have on the living standards of New Zealanders. There are indications that our high immigration rate has pushed up government spending, house prices and business borrowing.
– Improving data on household and business saving.

@gravedodger – it feels like a real sea change is happening over here in British Politics. People are finally waking up to the truth and are are starting to call a spade a spade. The political shackles and politically correct groupthink that so stifles debate is being smashed.

Despite attempts by the MSM to paint UKIP has looneys and clowns, people are starting to see straight though it. You are not a “Little Englander” to think that a nation is best served governing it’s own affairs, you are not a racist if you think multiculturalism is a rotten ideology that divides rather than unites and is no way to create a civil society, you are not a bigot if you think that the stability marriage provides should be the bedrock to the family and thus society, you are not being selfish if you think that a country that continually spends more than it earns will eventually face serious trouble and you are not being elitist if you think every student has the right to a top quality education (grammar schools) if they are so capable of handling it. It is not left vs. right – it is simple bl**dy common sense!!

And the thing is, once people see the truth, they can’t unsee it and the momentum for UKIP will grow and grow and will wipe away the identikit LibLabCon troika. EU election in 2014 will be the earthquake over here.

Elections are won at the centre, yes… UNLESS you have a bold visionary path that people can be galvanised by. Typically this is done by either scandal, crisis (in the case of incumbent government) or new radical idealism (in the case of opposition parties).

NZ has taken the wise route of not upsetting the applecart in a time of great global uncertainty and turmoil. We haven’t blown out our debts, and taken a softly-softly path to gradual improvements in fixing broken laws, taxation, and investment… with easing in public spending. The result is a projected return to surplus next year, how many first world economies can boast that at the moment? With no rioting in the streets, food shortages, fundamentalist religious hardliners, or internal coups. The world community would look at NZ in awe at the moment, and here we are distracted and bickering about petty little issues and the opposition attempting to manufacture crisis.

Yes it is great and benefits the host society, if it is done right. Western countries do not do it right.

I believe in good old fashioned tolerance for the differences of others. However, the host culture can not be expected to defer to the guest culture, as is the case in the UK. It may sound trite, but when in Rome do as the Romans do.

On the left you have, Labour, Gweens, NZ First, Mana, The Maori’s, United to the right of these you have National & ACT.
I’ve voted ACT in the past to try have a right wagging tail & we can see how well that’s worked out.
Politics in NZ is nothing but a popularity contest, & until there’s viable party to the right of National they have no option but to hold tight to the middle ground, if they hadn’t they wouldn’t be in power now.
Red MMP is a different beast to FPP that Thatcher & Reagan were elected under & with Thatcher the country wasn’t going to hell in a handbasket, it had already arrived.

Morse may have got off the charge of burning a New Zealand flag at an Anzac Day service on a technicality, but those of us with long memories will not forget her abhorrent disrespect for the memory of those who fought for the very freedoms that the likes of you and her take for granted and abuse.

I predict after the budget announcements Labour will say “too little too late”. That has been their standard response to National budgets for the last 40 years. The Greens will accuse National of looking after it’s “rich” mates. The unions will accuse National of not giving enough away. Businesses might have some criticisms of the budget but will give a better all round analysis.

Fair comment. Ignorance of the law is as much of a problem for Islamic societies as it is for western ones. Finding a remedy involves knowing why the respective schools teach such a politicised version of the law. In the case of Islam, you could look to people like the CIA’s Fethulah Gulen. In the case of the west, you could look to the age old conflict between the common law and the civil system. NZ’s implementation of the civil system claims the primary benefit of the common law, but denies the existence of the source of that benefit and the correlative duty of that benefit.

A woman has been airlifted to hospital with a serious injury after being knocked down and trampled by a mob of sheep at a remote Tararua property this morning.

The woman, 53, was moving the sheep at her property in Huia Rd near Pongaroa when they knocked her over. The rescue helicopter was called soon after 11am.

That would be a fairly rare event V2. There was a woman who had a chunk taken out of her leg by a domestic boar near Eketahuna a year or so back but we keep our sheep fairly submissive hereabouts.

I hope that we aren’t reduced to dining on insect stir fries….at least until I shuffle off my mortal coil but if we ever have a real food shortage we may end up using them as fish tucker. Apparently in parts of Asia they hang lights over fish ponds & the insects that are attracted & killed are eaten by the farmed fish.

Could be a nice little earner after the Greens stuff the mainstream economy. 🙂
