Huh? It’s a rich girl trip. It’s all about her and her life experiences. Don’t try to tell people it’s about helping anyone else. There’s fuck all that some stupid little Miramar tart can do over four weeks to help anything in fucking Ghana eh?

It’s a big time big ticket luxury item…. $9 000… and these turds try to turn it into some favour they’re doing the planet…

How about this…. raise $9 000… send it to Ghana… sweet. I’m sure that would do more for them than receiving the highly questionable benefit of 90 hours of Joanna’s third world tourist ‘expertise’.

Do what you want with your money… but don’t dress up a high cost item as giving back to the third world… and don’t beg for funds for something many would consider an extravagant expense for a rich brat.

Because as a taxpayer I’m being forced to pay for the same thing twice. The parents, through benefits or WFF tax credits, are already being paid to feed their kids. Then the fecund deadbeats are taught to rely on schools to feed their loin fruit.

Next time you buy petrol pay before you fill up the tank & again before you leave the forecourt….it will give you exactly the same feeling as forking out for school breakfasts.

exactly, why don’t we just stop the fucking around, stop worrying about ” feelings” and put a large proportion of benefits into food stamps. Another portion of the benefit into automatically paying, power, phone and rent. Anything thats left over in cash.

The money is being given for nothing, if you really need it you wont care whether its in coupons or not.

Bugger ” rights” if you are receving benefit money , you get it the way the government wants to give it to you – problem with that ? Fuck off then.

Didn’t get a chance to answer this the other day, so will now.

This is sad for a number of reasons. The first being that he just does not deserve to lose the title he earned for his services to the community – which were many.

To strip him of his title would be punishing him more than the others involved, which is extremely harsh as even the prosecution admit there was no malice or criminal intent.

As Sir Bob Jones pointed out he also has a knighthood and a criminal record for assault, and yet there has been no suggestion that he should be stripped of his title.

Doug Graham is still a good role model to society. He was and still is extremely hard working, devoting much of his time to others, and his family. His success was self made, his failures due to a world financial crisis of which he and his family also lost. Had he believed the company would crumble, he would have advised his family members to pull out. He didn’t.

Investments that pay good interest are risky. Blaming Sir Doug would be like blaming John Key for MR Power shares dropping below the cost price, and requesting he resign – absolute idiocy. That is the nature of the beast – you want good returns, you have to be prepared to lose.

I am gutted that Sir Doug feels he should hand back his knighthood, and even further devastated that they are considering home detention. What a waste of tax payer money. At least with community service he, and the other directors can give a little back to the community – with home detention he gets to sit at home – such a punishment for a frail old man!

Nothing they do to Sir Douglas Graham could hurt him more than the pain he feels himself for what happened. He has suffered enough, especially considering there was no intent – his past actions earned him a knighthood he is still entitled to. I hope he doesn’t hand it in – and that John Key does not give in to pressure from a few and strip him of something that was achieved through good effort that far outweigh any damage the collapse of Lombard’s caused.

The essential difference between Sir Robert Jones & the other convicted criminal is that the former didn’t rubber stamp the gifting of the country to the “gimmes”. (Sir) Douglas Graham started the Treaty gravy train.

To address that question, I direct you to an article by Jenny Gibbons who belongs to the Wiccan movement and an has MA in medieval history and a minor in the Great Hunt. If anyone should be against the Church it would be her. She wrote an article found on the pagan web site “Covenant of the Goddess.”

Since the late 1970’s, a quiet revolution has taken place in the study of historical witchcraft and the Great European Witch Hunt. … many theories which reigned supreme thirty years ago have vanished, swept away by a flood of new data. the quantity and quality of available evidence has dramatically improved…Today, for the first time, we have a good idea of the dimensions of the Great Hunt: where the trials occurred, who was tried in them, who did the killing, and how many people lost their lives. Every aspect of the Great Hunt, from chronology to death toll, has changed. And if your knowledge of the “Burning Times” is based on popular or Pagan literature, nearly everything you know may be wrong.

For years, the responsibility for the Great Hunt has been dumped on the Catholic Church’s door-step. 19th century historians ascribed the persecution to religious hysteria. And when Margaret Murray proposed that witches were members of a Pagan sect, popular writers trumpeted that the Great Hunt was not a mere panic, but rather a deliberate attempt to exterminate Christianity’s rival religion. Today, we know that there is absolutely no evidence to support this theory.

When the Church was at the height of its power (11th-14th centuries) very few witches died. Persecutions did not reach epidemic levels until after the Reformation, when the Catholic Church had lost its position as Europe’s indisputable moral authority. Moreover most of the killing was done by secular courts. Church courts tried many witches but they usually imposed non-lethal penalties. A witch might be excommunicated, given penance, or imprisoned, but she was rarely killed. The Inquisition almost invariably pardoned any witch who confessed and repented.

At the height of the Great Hunt (1567-1640) one half of all witchcraft cases brought before church courts were dismissed for lack of evidence. No torture was used, and the accused could clear himself by providing four to eight “compurgators”, people who were willing to swear that he wasn’t a witch. Only 21% of the cases ended with convictions, and the Church did not impose any kind of corporal or capital punishment.

… Ironically, the worst courts were local courts. …”Community-based” courts were often virtual slaughterhouses, killing 90% of all accused witches… national courts tended to have professional, trained staff — men who were less likely to discard important legal safeguards in their haste to see “justice” done.

But what of the Inquisition? For many, the “Inquisition” and the “Burning Times” are virtually synonymous. The myth of the witch-hunting inquisition was built on several assumptions and mistakes, all of which have been overturned in the last twenty-five years.

…a common translation error … said that a witch was tried “by inquisition”..Later, when historians examined the records in greater detail, they found that the majority did not involve the Inquisition, merely an inquisition …older and more popular texts (such as Rossell Hope Robbins’ Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology) still have the Inquisition killing witches in times and places where it did not even exist.

…In the 1970’s, when feminist and Neo-Pagan authors turned their attention to the witch trials, the Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches) was the only manual readily available in translation. Authors naively assumed that the book painted an accurate picture of how the Inquisition tried witches. Heinrich Kramer, the text’s demented author, was held up as a typical inquisitor. His rather stunning sexual preoccupations were presented as the Church’s “official” position on witchcraft. Actually the Inquisition immediately rejected the legal procedures Kramer recommended and censured the inquisitor himself just a few years after the Malleus was published. Secular courts, not inquisitorial ones, resorted to the Malleus.

…Lamothe-Langon’s [who’s notoriously forged] trials were the last great piece of “evidence”, and when they fell, scholars re-examined the Inquisition’s role in the Burning Times. What they found was quite startling. In 1258 Pope Alexander IV explicitly refused to allow the Inquisition from investigating charges of witchcraft: “The Inquisitors, deputed to investigate heresy, must not intrude into investigations of divination or sorcery without knowledge of manifest heresy involved.” The gloss on this passage explained what “manifest heresy” meant: “praying at the altars of idols, to offer sacrifices, to consult demons, to elicit responses from them… or if [the witches] associate themselves publicly with heretics.” In other words, in the 13th century the Church did not consider witches heretics or members of a rival religion.

Graham was appointed “Minister in Charge of Treaty Negotiations” in 1991. If he & his supporters are happy to accept the kudos from some then the & they can take the brickbats as well. It is true that a minister is acting for the government he/she is part of but there is plenty of scope for them to influence a process with their personal take on any matter.

In any case there is ample precedent for parliamentarians to be hated or revered for the legislation & actions they instigate. Witness David Garrett for ‘Three Strikes’ or Michael Cullen’s purchase of NZ Rail.

From Wikipedia….”Douglas was appointed as a Knight Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit for services as a Minister of the Crown and Member of Parliament”. He will not lose his title for cuddling the Maori elite but rather for aiding & abetting the fleecing of gullible yet greedy elderly investors who confused charm for competence.

The effect will be the same.

There is no justification in anything you say that warrants his being stripped of his title.

His punishment has been given by the Courts – his crime was not a deliberate act – he should not be made to suffer unduly, and unequally, just because in the past he gave more to society, than the others. They were equally responsible (or irresponsible) depending on how you look at it. Sir Douglas Graham is twice the man any of those who want to strip his title because of his involvement with TOW, will ever be.

I have had the dubious honour of knowing five ‘Knights’ during my life – two part of my extended family. Believe me – none of them were beyond ‘reproach’ – I suspect if we want our Knights to be beyond reproach, we may have to look beyond the human species.

Here is a review by that same Wiccan scholar, Jenny Gibbons. As I said earlier she belongs to the Wiccan movement and has an MA in medieval history and a minor in the Great Hunt

The Malleus Maleficarum is indeed one of the most influential Witch-hunting manuals of all times. And since it’s easily available in modern English translation, it’s still influential, the darling of amateur historians today. But it’s not a reliable guide to the Burning Times: it’s a duplicitous text with a checkered past, a book you simply can’t take at face value.

#1: The Author and His Motivation

Almost all of the Malleus was written by one man: Heinrich Kramer (aka Henry Institoris). A German inquisitor of the late 15th century, Kramer was not a well-respected man. His views on Witchcraft were considered weird and extreme by most of his fellow clergymen, who continually opposed and hindered his trials. .

Kramer wrote the Malleus to win the cooperation of his peers. The book isn’t — as some assume — a guide to what most 15th century Christians believed about Witches. It’s a minority opinion, written to convince the populace at large of the dangers of Witchcraft.

#2: The Endorsements

The Malleus is usually circulated along with a papal bull “Summis Desiderantes”, which rails against Witches and the people who oppose Kramer and his co-author, Jacob (or James) Sprenger. In the 15th century, there was also a little recommendation from the Faculty of Cologne (the Inquisition’s top theologians). Both of these endorsements are misleading.

Pope Innocent had actually never read the Malleus when he wrote “Summis Desiderantes”. Kramer complained to the Pope about the poor reception he was receiving from other priests, and the Pope (who was very superstitious and feared Witches greatly) obligingly gave Kramer this bull. Kramer treated the bull as if it was a full endorsement of his book, but it wasn’t.

The recommendation from Cologne is an out-and-out forgery. When they were finished writing, Sprenger presented the Malleus to the Faculty, asking for its approval. Instead, the Inquisition resoundingly condemned the book. It said that the legal procedures it recommended were unethical and illegal, and that its demonology was not consistent with Catholic doctrine. Undaunted, Kramer forged an enthusiastic endorsement. As you might expect, the Faculty discovered this quickly and was enraged! Kramer and Sprenger parted on bad terms, and the Inquisition condemned Kramer in 1490, just four years after the Malleus was published.

#3: The Impact of the Malleus

The Malleus wasn’t an immediately influential book. Most Church and Inquisitorial courts ignored it, probably because of the Faculty’s condemnation. Civil courts, unfortunately, gave it more weight. Fooled by the forged recommendation and the out-of-context bull, many non-religious judges believed that the Malleus had the approval of the Church. Many used it, though it did not — as some authors say — lie on the bench of every judge.

It publication did not increase the number of Witch trials. In fact, it came at the beginning of a slight lull, when the steady rise in trials stalled for a few decades. But when the major panics of the Burning Times hit in the mid-16th century, the Malleus came into its own. It was the most detailed discussion of Witchcraft around. Many civil courts were handling Witch trials for the first time. They had no idea how to proceed, and so they latched onto the Malleus’ recommendations gladly. By the end of the 16th century, other Witch hunting manuals eclipsed the Malleus. But at the beginning of the crazes, it did have an enormous impact.

#4: The Theories

You also have to take the Malleus’ theories with a grain of salt. As I’ve said, Kramer’s views were condemned by the Inquisition. They certainly don’t represent the official view of the Church of the 15th century.

If you compare the Malleus to other Witch-hunting manuals, you can see how unique its theories are. Kramer’s sexual hang-ups shine through like a super nova. I mean, there are seven entire chapters on all the awful things Witches can do to penises, and Kramer apparently thought that it was quite common for men to wake up and discover that their Virile Member had walked off in the middle of the night… The book’s sexism is also extreme. Most manual profer sexist explanations for why the majority of Witches are women. But none are as virulently misogynist as the Malleus.

The theology is also primitive. Read the Malleus closely, and you’ll notice that many of the “traditional” bits of Witch lore are missing. There are no sabbats. No covens. No Witches’ marks. Many of the Witchcraft stereotypes we’re familiar with developed in the 16th century. By comparing the Malleus (1484) to, say, the Compendium Maleficarum (1608), you can see how much beliefs changed during the height of the panics.

Sorry to join the debate a bit late, but objecting to blanket provision of welfare has nothing to do with selfishness.
It’s simply the case that, for many people, providing benefits does no good, and can be harmful.
Over the last half century, we have seen a progressive roll out of more and more benefits. But can you honestly say that the overall effect has been positive?
