Lewis Terman (1916) developed the original notion of IQ and proposed this scale for classifying IQ scores:

Over 140 – Genius or near genius

120 – 140 – Very superior intelligence

110 – 119 – Superior intelligence

90 – 109 – Normal or average intelligence

80 – 89 – Dullness

70 – 79 – Borderline deficiency

Under 70 – Definite feeble-mindedness dime and flipper

I remember we were all given an IQ test at primary school (late 1960s), administered by Dept Education…. and when I reached high school we were given an official brown card to fill some detail in and told NOT to look at the other side……., which we all promptly did…. So I learnt I wasn’t a genius…..

I’ve always been suspicious of IQ ….. Some cultures aren’t concerned with IQ… and believe with hard work, most folk can achieve a level of understanding and mastery of skills that interest them or are of value to them.

The p76 was designed by leyland a British company using British parts and design parameters not usa ones.
Compared to the shit that the Aussies where building like the fords and Holden and Chrysler they were a huge step forward.
remember Holden were a copy of Chevy as were the Chrysler and fords copy’s of the yank rubbish.
Light weight v8 ex buick weight the same as a ford four, rack and pinon steering, strut suspension Drove multiple times better than the crap Aussie was mostly building at the time. The oil shock of the seventy’s killed a fine car.

My dad had a Austin 2200 something that was rear as hens teeth
I lost my drivers license in it 😆 the cop could not believe that an Austin 1800 could do the ton so quickly

The name of the P76 derived from the car’s codename while in development (Project 76). The official line was that the P76 was an original Australian designed and built Large Family Car, with no overseas counterpart and that P76 stood for “Project 1976”.

The P-76 was designed for and to specifications penned by Leyland Australia. It was to compete against the Valiant / Ford and Holden, family sized cars of the time. It was designed and built to conform to Australian Design Rules. The designer was an Italian (Giovanni Michelotti) who was an independent car designer who had his own business in Milan and designed cars and trucks for several marques including Scammell, BMW and Leyland. He was one of the most prolific designers of sports cars in the 20th century. Born in Turin, Italy, Michelotti worked for a number of design houses, notably Vignale, before opening his own design studio in Italy. He was among the automobile designers who would work for various manufacturers as an independent designer rather than working from established studios.

The parts for the P-76 included the American Buick V8 engine that was also slotted in to the Rover 3500. The transmissions for the P-76 were manufactured by Borg Warner (Australia); the live axle was made in Australia, the McPherson struts in Australia, the brakes in Australia and even the panels were made of aluminium (and stamped / shaped in Australia).

It is possible that your own ‘experience’ with the P-76 was with a 6 cylinder engine from the Kimberley (an engine that was better suited as a boat anchor). But the cars were built at Leyland Australia’s factory at Zetland (Sydney). Leyland UK actually considered importing them (the V8s) during the 1970’s but were put off by the supposed fuel crisis at the time. If you knew your stuff, you’d also know that the launch of the P-76 was one of the biggest marketing flops of all time. But suggesting the P-76 was somehow a Pom car, is bollocks.

But I suspect you knew that. 😀

The GCSB changes:

The Prime Minister has agreed to major amendments to the GCSB Bill which mean that he will now be able to support the legislation through its remaining stages in Parliament.

Mr Dunne says that as well as the addition of a set of guiding principles into the legislation and the establishment of a two person advisory panel to assist the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, the Prime Minister has now agreed to the following additional amendments to the legislation which Mr Dunne will move during the Bill’s committee of the whole stage:

• The removal of the proposed Order in Council mechanism which would have allowed other agencies to be added to the list of agencies able to request assistance from the GCSB. Any additions beyond the Police, SIS and NZ Defence Force will now be required to be made by a specific amendment to the legislation, and not just by regulation as the Bill currently proposes.

• To ensure effective oversight in the issuing of a warrant the Bill will be amended so that the Inspector General is informed when a warrant is put on the register relating to a New Zealander.

• The GCSB will be required to report annually on the number of instances when it has provided assistance to the Police, SIS or NZ Defence Force.

• The GCSB will also be required to report annually on the number of warrants and authorisations issued.

• The Intelligence and Security Committee will hold public hearings annually to discuss the financial reviews of the performance of the GCSB and the SIS.

• There will be an independent review of the operations and performance the GCSB and the NZSIS and their governing legislation in 2015, and thereafter every 5-7 years.

In addition, Mr Dunne will be working alongside the Minister of Justice on the issues raised by the Law Commission’s 2010 report “Invasion of Privacy: Penalties and Remedies.” This review will include the definition of private communication (and metadata) to ensure a standard definition is developed for insertion in the GCSB and NZSIS Acts, and all relevant legislation such as the Crimes Act and the Search and Surveillance Act.

At first glance this seems to address all the major issues raised by various critics of the bill (including me).

As has been pointed out above, the fuel crisis that coincided with the launch of the P76 killed it off instantly. They were ahead of their time but even the diehard enthusiasts who clung to their cars would be pushed to describe them as reliable….similar in that respect to the Mk4 Zephyr.

British Leyland Australia’s p76
Vrs fords falcon based on the American falcon floorpan and runing gear
Chrysler based on the dodge compacts and Holden which was developed from the comaro floor pan .

It was a Australian car designed in England built in Australia as apposed to the competition which were American designed. The trans and diffs were actually borgward the same as those in the falcon and Chrysler .

As to the Kimberly /Tasman.

Based on the Austin 2200 I mentioned driving earlier with a slightly modified body and strangely a metric threaded engine as apposed to the British imperial thread wolesly /Austin 2200 ones.
Yes the six was a heap of shit the oil pump was weak causing engine failure. the cam oiling was also a problem with them.

How about if he gets charged with making child porn, as-in, not just distributing it but arranging for children to be raped? Does it matter then? Does it say anything about someone’s naivity if they don’t see any connection?

Grade 6 kids will be taught masturbation; Grade 7 kids about anal sex, as opposed to vaginal intercourse, in a discussion about abstaining from sexual activity. Not objectively, but in an advocacy model.

The energy giant’s Statistical Review of World Energy, which has been being published for more than six decades, is the latest report to signal a shift in world energy markets as a result of the U.S. shale oil boom.

According to BP, U.S. crude oil production last year recorded the largest increase in the world and the nation’s history at more than one million barrels a day. Production totaled 8.9 million barrels a day, a 14% jump year-over-year.

Pete, it makes precisely zero diff to whether or not information is gathered on you. I told you how it works, they vacuum up every single thing. Web searches, downloads, browsing history, emails, SMS, mobile data, social media, credit/debit transactions, CCTV, GPS and medical data; and they’re not going to stop just cos silly ole NZ has put in a stupid law for the sheeple. And if they want to monitor a NZer without applying for a warrant so they can do it on the quiet, why they’ll just ask one of the UKUSA partners to do it for them.

It’s quite obvious to almost everyone that Dunne is grandstanding on this to distract the public from his recent philandering and the only people who don’t get that are the less than a thousand idiots in Ohariu who will give him their vote. And I doubt that even their collective IQ would total above 70, which makes all of them hovering between Borderline deficiency and Definite feeble-mindedness in Griff’s helpful scale above. And they’re the only people in Wgtn who don’t see straight through Dunne’s pathetically transparent pretence that he gives a flying about privacy. The only thing he gives a flying about is not being sniggered at as he walks down the street but perhaps he should have thought of that before writing all those emails.

I wouldn’t particularly care under normal circumstances. I’ve never rated Dunne and hey, he’s not the first politician to do the dirty on his wife and he won’t be the last. But what gets me is his dishonesty in continuing to represent himself as an honest, upright man with integrity who really cares about the democratic process. Because if he did, he would have just shut up for the rest of the Parliament and then resigned at the next election. But he chose not to do that, so fuck him, I’ll expose the philandering little prick at every opportunity, and I might even do it rather loudly from the back at his public meetings, if he decides to put himself forward in 2014 as the upright man for Ohariu.

Er, no. As pointed out already, it was designed to an Australian spec by an independent Italian designer living and working in Milan. So stop being a cock and trying to rewrite history.

And despite your efforts to extol its virtues, the P-76 was not memorable. The Buick 215 V8 used for the Project 76 cars by Leyland Australia had a mechanical fuel pump and the gasket between the pump and the block had a habit of failing. The resulting mixture of fuel and oil in the sump had a habit or running the bearings. Ask anyone who tried to race one in the 1970’s – they will have similar tales of woe. And as they were not fitted with electric fuel pumps as a factory option, the homologation rules of the day meant the (fitted) mechanical pump could not be replaced.

As I said before, the Buick 215 V8 used in the P-76 was lightweight and it subsequently became the basis of several race engines. Mickey Thompson entered a car powered by the Buick 215 in the 1962 Indianapolis 500. From 1946 to 1962 there had not been a single stock-block car entered in the 500, but in 1962 the Buick 215 was the only non-Offenhauser powered entry in the field of 33 cars. Rookie driver Dan Gurney qualified eighth and raced well for 92 laps before retiring with transmission problems.

This same Buick 215 engine was subsequently developed and used in road cars including the TVR, Morgan, Land Rover, MG and Rover 3500 etc. And yes, later models were definitely fitted with an electric fuel pump!

The marketing cock up was that Leyland Australia launched the P-76 at a time they had no stock. Leyland Australia dealers sold the car off a brochure – and accepted deposits from customers across Australia. But, because of a series of union strikes (esp at the Sydney plant), they had no stock to sell and potential buyers were so pissed off with the delays, they asked for refunds. The P-76 never recovered. It’s remembered in history as a lemon – with good reason. In parallel to the union strikes, the fuel crisis of the day scared potential buyers away from V8 powered cars.

The rest, as they say is history.

I thought the ride at Rainbow’s End where it takes you to the top of the tower and drops to the ground was nasty. An earthquake has got nothing on anything like that. People like her should piss off somewhere with near zero earthquake risk. She’s like a child, not an adult. Totally falling to pieces over small quakes. It’s a bit pathetic really.

Another Auckland friend visited Welly for a weekend recently. She reported it was not warm and further noted a light zephyr. She is slowly coming right, but is unlikely to leave Auckland again, other than popping home to Singapore. But it was very brave of her to attempt it 🙂

As I pointed out Leyland Australia was a British company whereas the other Aussie cars were modified yank sourced platforms.
The official line it was an all Aussie effort but I actually doubt the official story line. After all most Aussies think the commodore was an Aussie car not a copy of an opal from Germany.

First you claimed that the P-76 was designed in the UK. We know that’s bollocks and I’ve provided you with the facts.

Then you suggest the car was based on British components – bollocks again. The panels were made in Australia/ engine in the USA / McPherson struts in Australia / Transmission in Australia / Live axle assembly in Australia / Brakes in Australia / Upholstery in Australia / Glass in Australia / and so on… Even the assembly jigs were made at the Zetland plant in Sydney. But maybe the instruments were Smiths – and made in the UK! Does that mean it’s now a ‘UK’ car in your eyes??? Yikes!

Now you ask whether I’ve ‘owned’ one – given your claim to have an IQ at stratospheric levels, I would have thought you could join the dots all by yourself and recognise I’ve had my hands dirty on a P-76 and on the Buick 215 engine.

most parts are from pommy/aussie cars very little was specific to the p76 except body and upholstery

Yes it was built in Aussie by an English company not a yank one so in that respect yes its as Aussie as pavlova or phar lap

MASSIVE PROJECT FINISHED .
The valve hall for Transpower’s recently completed $600 million Pole 3 electricity project, at the Haywards substation, was revealed to about 100 industry leaders, customers, staff and key contractors at a ribbon-cutting ceremony just north of Wellington yesterday.

The Pole 3 inter-island power link is a critical part of the electricity system which allows New Zealand to be one of the highest producers of renewable power in the world, at about 80 per cent.

And Transpower chief executive Patrick Strange joked that if there was another big quake during the ceremony they were in the best place possible. But everyone should “just make way while I jump into the building”.
