I’m 50 years old and I haven’t done bench press in over two decades, hasn’t hurt my chest development any 🙂 People always are interested in how much I can bench and I always answer – “Sorry, no idea but I do flys with 105lb dumbbells”.

Some people say that exercise hardly burns any energy at all and that it’s effectively a total waste of time from a pure energy equation perspective.

LRC, Maybe. But does that take into account the on-going effect of increasing your metabolic rate after you finish exercising? There are also other benefits being discovered.

My advice is to stop the gay poncing around dancing and start doing squats (careful though, gyms are full of faggots !). I know my running was far better when I did one squat session every 10 days. You get more power on those hills and pain becomes your friend.

Cabinet directive – iwi consultation

In 2005, as an outcome of the review of the New Zealand Geographic Board Act 1946, Cabinet agreed that the primary responsibility for iwi consultation on geographic names under Board’s jurisdiction should be with the Board rather than with officials from Te Puni Kōkiri. Cabinet also agreed that the Board should revise its existing ‘Protocol for Māori Place Names’ to take into account direct Board/iwi consultation.

In addition to the protocol, the Board has established dialogue guidelines with iwi and has formalised its relationships with Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) and Te Puni Kōkiri (Ministry of Māori Development).

Maori names for the North and South Island are no big deal. They even sound pretty cool, whatever they are.

I always think back to Mt Kosie-osko (spelled how I heard it referred to) in Aussie when strange sounding place names come up. They recently corrected the spelling for it and I got a shock when I realised it was a Polish name, which is pronounced so completely differently there is no way the Australians will be able to do it. They’ll still be calling it Kosie-osko, no matter how many times their pronunciation is corrected.

The Board has functions to collect and encourage the use of original Māori place
names on official maps and charts. To assist it in these functions, and to
encourage Māori participation in achieving this objective, the Board has
developed this protocol (the Protocol) which provides for a process of engaging
with appropriate Māori. This process is consistent with the functions, duties and
obligations of the Board under the Act.
iii) The Protocol does not change statutory rights of the public in the consideration
of a place name by the Board. Rather, it provides an opportunity for Māori to be
advised in advance of other non-Māori New Zealanders, in recognition of their
tangata whenua status over the land, and to have more time to gather
information, consult and prepare a response to proposed names.
iv) In respect to undersea feature names beyond the 12NM territorial limit, which
are not required to be publicly notified or consulted on (Section 25 of the Act),
this Protocol shall apply.
v) The Protocol is consistent with the principles of the Board’s commitment to
engage with Māori as the Treaty partner and will be applied inter alia to all
Treaty of Waitangi claim settlement issues involving dialogue or representation
on the place naming process.

What does get right up my nose is the way the New Zealand Geographic Board make a show of calling for input & making a pretence of considering facts & opinions when it is obvious that any proposal to rename places or features in Te Reo is automatically rubber stamped.

The board undoubtedly costs the taxpayer a fortune to run & is only there to provide window dressing.

“renaming women” is actually more about two becoming one than anything else. The male as the protector of the woman and the family does not do so an expression of power over her, he instead put himself forward as the one who stands in front. All symbolic of course in this day and age, but not necessarily in the future.

It provides a process and actually does make some decisions. There is a funny chap in Wellington who makes screeds of submissions to it to correct the spelling of place names. Not all are accepted and not all application to change to te reo are accepted on face value. Otherwise, we would not have the dual names for many important features.
I think over time people will become more comfortabl;e with using the te reo names. I haven’t heard anyone speak of Mt Egmont for a while, to take an obvious example.

Well no, because names have a history and are about association. When I was a kid we took the overnight ferry to the North Island, where we went to parliament, had breakfast at the Brandon Buffet, road the cable car etc….

I just ran North and South Island through Google translate to see what they turn into when Latinised.

North Island: Insula Septentrionem
South Island: Australis Islandia

We could potentially sexy the English up a bit by using the Latin, though the South Island might get confused with Australia (that great southern land).

I think over time people will become more comfortabl;e with using the te reo names.

Storm in a ‘b-cup’ mikey – referring to those things some appear to ‘have in a tangle.’

Nothing has changed except to give official recognition to names, both Maori and English, that have existed for a long, long time.

Newsreaders and weather presenters will be castigated for incorrect pronunciation of course, but nothing new there and nothing that will alter the minds of the young and impressionable.

And complaining about this will not do anything to grow our economy, create jobs, keep the cost of living down, better educate our kids and give them greater opportunities, or keep them or their families safer. (A bit like the call to switch to a republic really – another wasted complaint…)

Don’t hold your breath waiting for similar pragmatism in Godsown V2. Marijuana legislation has always been about the state keeping potential subversives under control. The original laws banning the growing & consumption of hemp were passed in response to the USA seizing on a League of Nations caution about possible side effects.

Rental home warrant of fitness coming

A warrant of fitness for rental houses is set to be in place this year.

The test will see the establishment of a minimum standard for rental accommodation, where houses can either pass or fail health and safety standards.

It is being developed by the Housing and Health Research Programme at the University of Otago in association with the New Zealand Green Building Council.

The test will merge basic elements of the organisations’ existing housing assessment tools, which would be made available to local councils, central government, landlords, tenants and homeowners.

Practicalities and implementation costs of the warrant were being considered, University of Otago, Wellington, researcher Dr Julie Bennett said.

“While there are costs of implementing such a system, the costs of inaction are considerably greater, and are already being borne on a day-to-day basis by many individuals and whanau.”

Substandard housing was a major problem in New Zealand, with little recognition of the aspects of housing quality that affect people’s health and safety, she said.

Professor Philippa Howden-Chapman, of the University of Otago, Wellington, said the Housing and Health Research Programme had been working on the issue for more than a decade.

“We have joined forces with the New Zealand Green Building Council because we knew we could make faster progress if we combined our resources,” she said.

The warrant would ideally be phased in this year, and a pilot may be used to identify what effect it would have on rents.

“We would like to see this achieved sooner rather than later,” she said.

There’s more to a name than simple identification. The naming of people or things indicates a relationship like dominion between the namer and the named. The state has no real relationship to the land so it’s not appropriate to use anything it selects.
