The question was which ONE of the three. Your attempted guess, especially as hypocrisy is not something peculiar to Labour Party politicians, is way off the mark and shows you did not comprehend the question.

Many NZ-based web companies buy wholesale hosting services from US-based companies. It’s entirely possible that the candidate’s campaign is buying design and hosting from an NZ provider who has server space in the US. Dipshit.

And, for what it’s worth, both Cunliffe and Robertson’s sites seem to be served from US-based hosting providers. I couldn’t even find a website for Shane Jones.

Maybe it’s hosted on one of the servers run by that hero of the left, dot com. His sites are hosted offshore as well. After all, it’s only bad when those evil corporations do it. It’s ok when the left does it. Do as I say, not as I do.

I administer several Australian sites that are hosted on Australian servers.

But… I use Cloudflare, which means the IP first resolves to their US server, to protect against DDoS attacks and the like.

And… my Australian web hosts offer a service whereby they back up their entire database offshore so that in the event of a significant failure in their infrastructure they’d switch their nameservers to point to the US backup. They sometimes also do this during major upgrades.

So are you absolutely sure it isn’t in fact in NZ?

I’ve had experience with Incapsula which does something similar, which is why I asked my question about how we know where it is hosted. Incapsula is a cloud based web application firewall and I think it is a great concept. Essentially your web site, via Incapsula, presents itself to the internet in hundreds of different data centers all around the world. Leaving your actual web server protected from all manner of attacks including DDOS, and with a full time security team looking for new threats.

Alan: Now take a deep breath and try and follow this….Cunliffe makes a big deal about “buying New Zealand”, ahead of all other considerations – price, quality, fitness for purpose etc….ACT and the Conservatives make no such supposedly principled stand…ergo (now here’s the slightly difficult bit) Cunliffe is being hypocritical by having his website hosted overseas – presumably because of price, quality, and fitness for purpose etc. – whereas the other two parties …arent..

Now, if you still can’t follow why this little issue is worthy of DPF’s attention, take two deep breaths, and start again from “Cunliffe makes a big deal…”

Hosting offshore may seem like a small point but it goes some way to diminishing the conviction he has for the ideas he spouts.

I’ve sought out NZ-based hosting before. It exists, it works, but it is considerably more expensive than US-based alternatives. I’d put this down to efficiencies of scale (lack of) in NZ.

This is a key factor in a lot of the rubbish that some NZ politicians spout: that we should ignore the things that other countries do more efficiently and instead pay more to local companies that can’t do the same job for the same price.

Stupid thinking, but if you believe it then you should at least follow it.

You don’t seem willing or able to follow the discussion.

If our “Candidate X” is paying a local web development firm to build and host the website then he almost certainly has no knowledge or control over where it is hosted.

Web hosting in New Zealand is relatively expensive and of lower quality than other regions. So most developers have reseller accounts that allow them to buy and on sell cheap hosting from large specialist firms in the US and other countries.

We live in a global economy that has benefited massively from an international trade in goods and services. If our “Candidate X” drives a car that was manufactured overseas, does this also make him a hypocrite?

David Cunliffe:

Shane Jones:
Doesn’t appear to have a campaign page.

The only question is which ones have made nationalistic procurement promises?
