I have no problem with the names being recognised as official or with Maori people using those names. But really the whole thing is just grandstanding and has no substance. Just like the Maori welcome when the Judge comes into Court. Rarely does anyone understand it anyway. Bugger all Maori speak the language.

Your attitudes are already outdated, yet in some respects you write as though you are a young(ish) man. New Zealand is the only home for a living Maori language and culture, and has become a lot friendlier towards that culture in recent decades. I think NZ is a better place for that change; certainly the place names are less boring.

Mike for those 30yrs you speak about I’ve had it almost beaten into me how bad I am to white, male & middle class & basically a visitor in a country in which I, my parents, 3 of their parents etc were born.
For over a hundred years the world has known the islands to be the North & South Islands, so yes Mike we rewriting history first by pretending they were never officially called the North & South & secondly by pretending they have always been known as Te Wai Pounamu & Te Ika-a-Māui to the local indigenous peoples & all that we are doing is reverting back to their proper names.

It is very very doubtful that pre European Maori used those names universally. Maori were not a united people in one country until Europeans made it that way. Even today they are far from united. There was not one identical language.

Narcotic substances, presumed to be poppy straw and morphine, have been confiscated from the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, a spokesman for the Russian Investigative Committee declared Wednesday.

Given this “new evidence,” the charges already brought against the 30 Greenpeace activists could be “modified,” the Investigation Committee said.

Russian investigators will also charge some of the Arctic Sunrise crewmembers with further serious crimes, as they are suspected of ramming border guards’ boats, endangering the guards’ lives and health, the Investigative Committee’s statement said.

I think maori place names and their meanings deserve wider exposure.

Remuera, for instance, means “burnt around the edges”, and is so named because once upon a time the happy villagers captured the daughter of the neighboring village’s chief, and cooked her in an earth oven and ate her.

She was still wearing her woven skirt when thrown into the oven, and the skirt was famously “burnt around the edges”.

Isn’t learning about maori culture fun? 🙂

When less than 1 in 10 citizens would be able to tell you what it means and there is no referendum on the matter, what would you call it?

And 1 in 10 is generous. I guarantee if you walk down the main street of any town tonight, before the ~~indoctrination~~ “education” has had a chance to bed itself in, you’d get less than 1 in 50.

And remember, this is OUR country not just the country of the minority of cringing guilt-ridden white liberals and what is more suitable for a referendum than something like this? And why didn’t they have one? Same reason they won’t have one when they announce the principles of Te Tiriti are going to be part of OUR new constitution.

Am I hearing things?

White woman on the news. Something called Hampsta. Online savings thing. Woman was saving $80 a week on less than $30K yearly income into Hampsta. She wanted to spend $3 000 at Countdown come the holiday season. Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaat????? Three thousand frickin dollars? What does she plan on doing? Bathing in Homebrand cream like some Cleopatra fantasy?

The story was about Countdown being off the list of places Hampsta members could spend their Hampsta vouchers…. but of course the interesting part is always what the dropkicks are getting up to and think is normal style behaviour. 🙂

And of course it wouldn’t be television unless they can play the sympathy card for not only the special needs daughter – because for some reason that makes it worse – but the mother has some kind of problem as well that needed mentioning so we could all go aaaaaaawwww…. poor lady.

That can’t be right eh? Saving up to unleash $3K at a supermarket on a less than 30K income. WTF? WTF? WTF????

Just in case someone interprets my 6:09 as being anti-Maori, it wasn’t intended to be, it was a criticism of the process we follow these days, a criticism I stand by.

Notwithstanding there were and are wrongs done in epic proportion that require correction and I know and applaud that. However if you don’t follow due process then you create injustice anew and that’s what I was criticising.

Rather than listening to lightweights like Ken Mair who is all over the media justifying this latest sop to that redress, I suggest those who are bothered by the issue take a leaf out of this man’s book.

It’s not braincells it’s self-discipline and financial prudence and intelligence has nothing to do with each other.

Financial prudence has everything to do with your upbringing and you can see this by observing there are plenty of people who are intelligent and on high incomes but who spend their money like water and this is because it’s they were raised that way. It’s not about intelligence it’s about wisdom, and that’s not the same thing.

The profit made by the person who started this is clear: e.g. he someone who does what he does rents his house to Dotcom. To me, he rips people off. He not only gets the money rolling in early he also uses the purchasing power to buy bulk low which normally means shit quality. It’s a bit like the dealer who beats a poor person down in price then puts it in the window a few minutes later for twice what they just paid.

It’s legal, but to me, it’s not honest.

I shouldn’t get too alarmed about the constitutional review. It was set up as a sop to the Maori Party and has meandered along to within cooee of the next election, at which time the Maori Party, if it survives, will likely be of less importance to National. I think constitutional change will happen, but it will happen the way we have always done it; incrementally and slowly.

Thank you for your concern. Yes, I enjoyed my science classes very much. I found it fascinating how, by using the scientific method, we could, with experimentation and testing, prove or disprove a scientific hypothesis in our physical world. We could develop empirical proof as to how things came into being – dinosaurs, like you, that I’m sure you’re familiar with – and many other very intriguing things that require scientific proof.
But what it didn’t do is give explanations for things that seemed to not be able to be proved empirically – there are some minor items that escaped that parameter. Furthermore, science – the new religion – could not explain everything in science – about origins, first cause etc. So I started to consider things like meta-physics, philosophy and other sciences that may give answers.
You might want to try it some day – its also fascinating stuff. 🙂

Interpreting evidence.

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed into four separate jars. The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
