So, according to a new book, back in the ’90s when Bolger was PM, the Russians offered to swap us fighter jets for milk 🙂

LONDON: Fighter jets and nuclear submarines for milk! The extraordinary offer was made by Russia to New Zealand in 1993, a new book has claimed.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was struggling to pay the $100 million it owed New Zealand for a range of imported dairy products, Guardian reported.

In a meeting with Russian officials to chalk out payment terms, Jim Bolger, then New Zealand prime minister, was left “absolutely stunned” to be offered a nuclear submarine and two MiG fighter jets in lieu of money, according to Clive Lind, the author of the book, ” Till the Cows Came Home”.

Lind, who interviewed Bolger and former New Zealand Dairy Board chairman Dryden Spring, who was also present at the meeting, said the offer had been made by Alexander Shokhin, then deputy prime minister of Russia.

“The Russians were trying to come up with lines of credit before Shokhin mentioned there were other funding arrangements,” Lind was quoted by the daily as saying.

“He pointed out that MiG jets were highly desirable and that they also had surplus tanks to offer. Jim Bolger had to explain that he wasn’t in the market for second-hand tanks,” Lind added.

Perhaps most remarkably, Shokhin then offered a nuclear submarine to wipe out Russia’s debt. Noting that New Zealand was a staunchly non-nuclear-powered country, he suggested hooking the vessel up to the national grid and using it as a power plant for a coastal city, the report said.

“Bolger recalled the reaction he would have got if he returned to a nuclear-free New Zealand and told people that he hadn’t got any money for them but had secured a nuclear submarine instead,” Lind said. “It simply wasn’t going to fly.”

After politely declining the offer of the military equipment, New Zealand managed to secure a number of periodic payments from Russia, totalling about $30 million — less than a third of the total debt.

“The world was awash with butter at the time and we needed Russia to take ours. While we needed the money to pay our farmers, we also needed to secure a market for our butter, which Russia agreed to. Plus, you can buy MiG jets for a lot less than $30 million. There was a guy who bought one in New Zealand for just $15,000 not so long ago,” Bolger reportedly told Lind.

Some Australians getting their textbooks delivered by drone. The service is quite fast according to accounts.
I wonder how fast this sort of thing will catch on, and will there have to be special ‘air-lanes’ to avoid collisions?

If waiting two or three days for a FedEx package seems like a lifetime, you may soon have a new, faster shipping option: drones.

Australian textbook rental company Zookal has partnered with Flirtey, a commercial drone service, to ship some Australian students their books just minutes after they place an order.

“Drones have this negative connotation,” Ahmed Haider, Zookal’s founder and CEO, told Mashable. “We want to apply them to commercial uses and show that they can have a very positive impact.”

A user makes a purchase on his or her smartphone, and selects Flirtey as the delivery method of choice. Back at headquarters, a human packs up the purchased items — although Zookal hopes to automate the packing in the future — and attaches it to the drone. A few minutes later, the drone and your package arrive.

Total time from submitting an order to having the book in your hand: two or three minutes, Haider said.

Flirtey can deliver packages to any outdoor space, including doorsteps, backyards, street corners and even balconies.

At first, the drones will be able to deliver books within a kilometer radius (about 0.6 miles) from a dispatch center, but Haider said that as the team improves the technology, he hopes to increase delivery distance to five or 10 kilometers (three to six miles).

Flirtey has been tested in the area around Zookal’s Sydney headquarters, but will become an option for customers located in many Australian cities, since Zookal has operations nationwide.

Australian students will be able to choose drone delivery starting in March 2014. Zookal plans to test the drones in Asian markets before bringing them to the United States in 2015.

biculturalism which involved placing indigeneity and the effects of colonialism on the
tangata whenua as a key consideration of political and policy development from the
1970s, and more particularly from 1985. Whether it was the delivery of Maori-sensitive
welfare and economic policy, increasing the awareness of the impact of colonialism both
in an historical as well as a contemporary sense, or Treaty settlements, there was a
significant re-orientation of public perception and practice. It also involved inviting
others, notably Pakeha, to explore their own post-colonial identity (Spoonley, 1995). But
almost simultaneously, decisions were being made about New Zealand’s immigration
policies that were to have far reaching consequences for the cultural politics of New
Zealand, although it was to be almost a decade before there was an awareness of what
exactly this meant. Those decisions about immigration that saw policy altered from 1986
onwards have remade the cultural mix of New Zealand and have added a new layer to the
evolving imagery and policy concerns of this country.
In these circumstances, key questions concern the way in which these changes and their

As with anything as significant as the demographic and cultural changes that have occurred, there are bound to be concerns. If democratic debate and constructive understanding is to emerge, then the quality of information provided in the public domain is an essential precondition.
As with debates about biculturalism, the media play a critical role in

certain institutions, especially the education system, the media provide one of the most
important, and possibly the most important, point of contact. The media, in all its diverse
forms – print, radio, television, electronic – is a key institution in the creation and
distribution of images and messages about our community(ies). Those significant others
in our community, in the absence of in-depth personal contact or experience, will be
described and explained to us via the media. It helps confirm who we are as individuals
and members of various communities. As the demographic make-up of New Zealand has
changed since the late 1980s, the media have played a critical role in exploring what this
means for all of us.

UPDATES! GRAHAM McCREADY vs JOHN N BANKS + VINCE SIEMER!!

The Graham McCready vs John Banks case is waiting for the Judges’s decision today Wednesday 16 October 2013 at 2.15pm, in the Auckland District Court, as to whether or not it will go to trial.

What came out loud and clear in Court yesterday, was that John Banks DID know that the donations from Kim Dotcom and Sky City were NOT anonymous. But because he had (lawfully???) delegated the responsibility of compiling his candidate’s returns (including donations) to a third party, who purportedly DIDN’T know the donations from Kim Dotcom and Sky City were NOT anonymous, they were recorded as such.

If this third party was not present at the meetings with Kim Dotcom and Sky City, at which it was clear these donations were NOT anonymous, then how was it correct for him to record these donations as anonymous?

It was stated in Court that it was effectively the ‘custom and practice’ in the 2010 and previous John Banks Mayoral campaigns to deliberately keep financial details, particularly about donations, separate from the Mayoral candidate.

So how could John Banks, in all honesty, ask this third party who had prepared his candidate’s returns if the information was true and correct, before signing them, if the knowledge of the John Banks as Mayoral candidate, and this third party were not one and the same regarding donations?

What dodgy ‘sleight of hand’ is being perpetrated here, by the (now) Leader of the ACT Party – the Party which supposedly upholds the principles of both ‘personal responsibility’ and ‘one law for all’?

How can ANY candidate for public office, sign their candidate’s returns without first PERSONALLY double-checking that the information is correct???

In my considered opinion as someone who was a Mayoral candidate both in 2010 (and 2013), this case SHOULD go to trial.

Today – fellow Public Watchdog / Judicial Whistle blower Vince Siemer is in the Auckland HIGH Court (Waterloo Quadrant) , where at 10am he will be cross-examining Detective SuperIntendent Lovelock over his role in organising the Police raid/invasion of the Siemer’s home in February 2008 where they took heaps of stuff (unlawful search and seizure) and still have not returned some of it. It’s a BIG deal and Vince deserves support! So folks – if you can come to the High Court today at 10am I think you will find this VERY interesting!

WHEN YOUR RIGHTS ARE UNDER ATTACK – STAND UP – FIGHT BACK!

So having seen and understood “New Zealand” (an academic elite supported by business) makes important value judgements about cultural enhancement. 10 years later people are looking about and perceiving a reality. That’s where the media come in:

The media, in all its diverse forms – print, radio, television, electronic – is a key institution in the creation and distribution of images and messages about our community(ies).

A good example is where Professor Spoonley tells us:

Key blew Goiterchin apart…as did Smith to Twyford, and Parata to Hipkins and the red melon fashion plate.
The tubby rainbow almost went over the edge….but his tactic was far too obvious, and dumb. The duck was noticeable by a lack of quakking…..

Altogether, a very poor day for the “liarbors”. But today is Wednesday, and they have another chance at bat…… 🙂

Oh dear – U.S Govt “food stamp” card goes down in Louisiana giving limitless value on card which shoppers take advantage of, stripping a local shop of just about everything.

Over the weekend in Louisiana, some food stamp recipients realized that their EBT cards were suddenly showing up as having no limit, resulting in empty shelves and overflowing shopping carts as people tried to buy as much stuff as possible with their cards before the glitch was fixed. Now, Walmart and Xerox are playing the blame game over who’s at fault.

“Some people had eight or 10 shopping carts full of groceries,” said the Police Chief of Springhill, LA. By the time he arrived at his local store at 7 p.m. on Saturday, he says there were hundreds of customers with overflowing carts waiting to check out…

A few hours after he arrived on the scene, the glitch was fixed and limits were reinstated.

“When they heard the announcement, people just left their carts in place and walked out of the store,” recalls the Chief, who says that police were not needed to disperse the crowd of shoppers.

At least John Banks answers questions when they are put to him.

How can ANY candidate for public office, get away with not answering a simple straight-forward question that has been put to them by the public multiple times over many months? Moreover, when that question is asking the candidate whether they would sign up to THEIR OWN PROPOSED ‘ACTION PLAN’ which includes references to a code of conduct – and that candidate refuses to answer – is this candidate suitable to running for mayor? Remember, Penny posted an ‘open letter’ asking John Palino if he would sign up to her proposed ‘ACTION PLAN’; yet when asked if SHE would sign up to it herself, Penny has consistently refused to answer.

Is there something in this ‘ACTION PLAN’ that Penny has proposed that she herself could not abide by or accept?

WHY ELSE would she refuse to either confirm or deny that she would willingly sign up to it?

In my ‘considered opinion’, someone who refuses to answer such a simple, straight-forward question, is most certainly NOT SUITABLE for the position of mayor.

They can’t even see the problem hj:

It doesn’t then matter which city potential tourists or immigrants visit – as they are both much the same.

I’ve lived in Sydney and have traveled to Auckland, and I wouldn’t bother going back to either to visit – nor Melbourne.

When I first came to Australia -as a kiwi tourist- I visited Adelade and Perth, I liked them both, I liked ‘Australia’. 3 yrs later I decided to move to ‘Australia’ and went to Melbourne to live -no- that wasn’t ‘Australia’ and neither was Sydney. Now I live in QLD and have choosen not to live in Brisbane for the same reason. ‘Australia’ to me is living amongst 2nd and 3rd ect generation Australians. And I expect that ‘New Zealand’ to immigrants is living amongst 2nd and 3rd ect generation kiwis.

Too much immigration disolves what a ‘par-national lifestyle’ is. A ‘par-national identity’ is not a lifestyle.

The other thing is that societies have a patina. Spoonley talks of “new and old New Zealanders” yet how many crunched out in their rugby boots onto frozen chewings fescue as kids or looked forward to A and P show, went swimming at the local waterhole, had parents who hunted deer with an ex WW2 Lee Enfeild 303 etc.

This will catch on fast. It would already be catching on in the US but I wonder if the FAA in the United States has the wrong idea. As they say on the FAA website:

“The FAA’s sole mission and authority as it focuses on the integration of unmanned aircraft systems is safety.”

Which sounds good, but it ignores the fact that drones represent a huge opportunity for economic growth and safety is always something that must be balanced against economic considerations. You could always have more safety, but at what cost?

Despite a groundswell of interest in drones and numerous startups that plan to rely on drone flight, the FAA does not allow use of drones for commercial purposes. Worse still, the FAA has provided no clear roadmap for freeing the skies to allow small unmanned vehicles to fly. Oddly, recreational use of drones remains entirely unchecked.

So why are drones such a big deal? In our robotic future, anything that can reduce urban congestion, minimize carbon emissions, save money and save trips to the emergency room (car accidents kill, you know) will drive huge value in the economy and make our lives better, to boot.

It’s worth considering that aircraft operations are generally quite expensive. It’s rather difficult for an ordinary person to start up as an air operator. But drones provide potential opportunities for small enterprises. But this may be stifled if the FAA introduces a regulatory framework that is overly prohibitive in regulatory compliance costs.

The 2012 reauthorization bill also directed the FAA to “allow a government public safety agency to operate unmanned aircraft weighing 4.4 pounds or less” under certain restrictions. The bill specified these UAS must be flown within the line of sight of the operator, less than 400 feet above the ground, during daylight conditions, inside Class G (uncontrolled) airspace and more than five miles from any airport or other location with aviation activities.

In a NZ context this would mean no deliveries if you lived in South Auckland or the North Shore (Whenuapai) and perhaps not much of central Auckland if the hospital counts as a location with aviation activities. Also the daylight restriction would pretty much cancel any possibility of having food delivered. Also “within the line of sight” seems a short-sighted limitation.

I’m not sure the FAA is up to the task of delivering on what this technology promises and I believe our own CAA is playing catchup.

Seems to me Wal-Mart is clearly at fault for not refusing service, accepting what was obviously not permitted, and not following the procedures that are said to be in place.

The Chief says he told the manager he had the right to refuse service, but the manager claimed he’d been instructed by Walmart HQ to accept the limitless cards.

“The outage was the result of failures by our contractor, Xerox,” said a spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services. When the system went down, retailers have a phone system for getting authorizations on EBT purchases.

“Some retailers chose not to follow the process,” said the rep. “Those businesses are only being reimbursed for the (maximum) amounts on individual cards.”

According to the NZ Herald this morning, he drove himself shopping yesterday.
Did not name a town…
He has been in prison 13 years. Driving licences are not possible for any inmate, unless on approved release-to-work parole (and then with great difficulty), and unless he took and passed the test on Monday, he has no licence, since his probably expired years ago.

That might be the extent of his “criminal” record. 🙂

Amazon silently removed scores of incest, child rape and bestiality e-books from its store when we reported last week the depraved books the online retailer was profiting from. Other retailers took their entire websites offline following our reporting and a front-page story in the Mail on Sunday, with whom we worked closely last week to bring our reporting to a wider audience.

But even more shocking still is the revelation today, following a third Kernel investigation, that Amazon, along with its rival bookstore, Barnes & Noble, are selling vile works of Holocaust denial, even in countries where Holocaust denial is against the law, such as France, Germany and Austria.

My initial reaction is generally that if I don’t like what someone is saying I don’t buy their book. It never really occurs to me to say “how dare they say that”. Rather I tend to think “how dare I listen to it”, so I choose not to.

I assume that the incest etc. books are obscene under the Miller test, and holocaust denial is illegal in some European countries. But it is easy to imagine that the next outraged article will be about books that criticize Islam, or books that encourage bigotry towards homosexuals.

You would be lucky to reach a house located on than side of Palmy from Petone in two hours and eight minutes.
