Most voters think “since we have had MMP governments have been forced to be more moderate”. I think it is not long enough to tell. MMP could mean governments might be even nuttier. MMP might mean the tail can wag the dog.

Rich coming from someone who unilaterally decided to alter immigration policy to a degree that at Maori and Pakeha will likely be out numbered by Asians in the years ahead (a policy which has shot us in the foot according to the independent Savings Working Group).

Mr Brown says most councillors recognise the affair is a private matter for him, and he will be committing more time to his family during this term.

“Much of what I’ve been through reflects the fact that I need a better work-life balance and I’ll be genuinely looking for that. I’ve had to admit that I’m a workaholic. So all of those things mean that for my family I need to find time.”

The mayor made no reference in his inauguration speech to the controversy over the past fortnight since admitting that he had had a two-year affair with a member of a council advisory panel.

A couple more re-writes by Brown and it will be your fucking fault – you, the people of Auckland who drove your devoted overworking Mayor to it.

NZ No 5 on world prosperity list

New Zealand scored in the top 20 for all categories, coming out fifth overall, but slipped two places since the last Legatum Prosperity Index was published in 2009.
The report’s publishers said one of the largest shifts between the two reports was in the safety and security category, where New Zealand dropped from eighth to 15th place. This was “due to increases in demographic pressures, human immigration and group grievances”.

While conservatives basically want to be left alone, believe in individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited governmental intrusion, left-wingers want their preferences to become your laws and to impose their belief system on everyone.

Consider these examples: As a conservative, if you don’t want to purchase a 40-ounce soda, what do you do? Simple. Not purchase a 40 ounce soda; get a 20 ounce instead. But if a left-wing liberal doesn’t want a 40-ounce soda, what do they do? They seek to pass laws so that nobody can purchase a 40-ounce soda. If a conservative chooses not to smoke he or she doesn’t buy cigarettes, doesn’t smoke. But if a left-winger doesn’t want to smoke they pass laws banning it for everybody or at least for as many as possible. A conservative thinks a clip that holds 20 rounds is too large for her firearm, she buys a 10-round clip. A left-wing liberal has the same thought and they’re standing on the capitol steps waiving signs decrying how NOBODY should be able to purchase and own a 20-round clip.

A conservative doesn’t think prayer prior to a high school football game is appropriate (not that a true conservative likely would), he simply withholds his child from the prayer session. But a liberal with the same thought goes on the war path. “We’ve got to end that practice! Not my children nor anyone’s children should be out there praying!” “…well, not to Jesus, anyway.” And they lawyer up, contact the ACLU, get letters into the local newspapers and do everything in their power to end the practice of praying before games.

And this list goes on and on and on. They’re perpetually not happy with something, and so seek to pass laws to make their level of unhappiness the rule of the land for EVERYONE, whether everyone else was also unhappy about it or not.

Fuck me …….You progs are mentally ill – go and get some help! 😎

Ha , I knew the LVR would be a disaster…

One of New Zealand’s largest home builders says new loan restrictions have cost it 24 new-home builds in the first month alone – and it expects more as the policy bites.

Why on earth, did the govt allow the LVR to apply to new home builds and provinces where prices have been falling for 7 years already!!!! The government pretends they have nothing to do with it but I disagree.

Pete George at 8:47 a.m. – I couldn’t agree more. Rebecca Wright was so aggressive with John Palino, the centre-right mayoral candidate. Whereas John Campbell was so gentle with Len Brown. Now I am okay with John Campbell being gentle with Len Brown at the time. However since then Mister Campbell has not seen fit to do any follow-up with Len Brown, who after all is the perpetrator of this whole sordid mess.

It is just another example of the left-wing Campbell looking after his favoured left of centre politician, Len Brown, while scapegoating the right of centre candidate Palino. The New Zealand Herald has taken the same approach.

One can only imagine what would happen if a centre-right mayor such as John Banks were involved in such an affair. John Campbell and the New Zealand Herald would not rest until the fellow was dismissed from office.

The media’s support for left-wing candidates and disdain for right-wing candidates could not be more blatant in the case of Len Brown.

A suggestion that the Psychoactive Substances Act approach be extended to cover other drugs as an alternative to the failed “war on drugs”.

Although the Psychoactive Substances Act was intended to deal with that issue only, and not to have wider application, it does occur to me that, if after a period of time, it is shown to be working effectively, it could well become the model by which narcotic drugs, currently controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act, are regulated for the future. The yardstick of level of risk – based on sound pharmacological and toxicological evidence – would become the determinant of availability, not public sentiment or prejudice.

I am not suggesting a revolution, but simply observing that the regulatory regime introduced for psychoactive substances could well have wider application and that we should not be averse to that possibility. After all, most experts now concede the so-called “war” on drugs has failed, and new initiatives are required.

An idea with merit worth considering further?

Others might be surprised who is considering this, but not me.

Can someone explain….

As many are saying, the manufacturing / exporting sectors are doing incredibly well even with the rising NZD (the increases stalled a bit lately but the dollar is still very high).

So, why does Graham Wheeler say this…

“Reserve Bank governor Graeme Wheeler signalled this morning he might push back the start of increases in the official cash rate if the New Zealand dollar stays high.”

If the facts point to a better than ever manufacturing /exporting output in a high dollar environment, then why does Wheeler care?

Surely interest rates should be set based on the economic performance indicators — from what I can see, the housing market is just going nuts — I think there is a good case for a price bubble forming in auckland as evidenced by the number of people that think prices cannot fall. The RB made a huge error between 2003-2007 by not increasing interest rates quickly enough , and i think they are making the same mistake.

Because of the extent of private debt in the system. House hold debt is around $200 billion add business debt of around another $120 billion. Interest rates go up and the economy gets crushed.

The massive inflation in the capital sector will at some stage cross into the consumer sector leading to higher interest rates or if Wheeler turns off the money printing (in an attempt to slow inflation) this will cause the existing capital structure to collapse. (ie property bubble to bust)

NZ is faced with a centrally planned economic train wreck its just a matter of when. The Statist turd Wheeler will end up crashing the economy regardless.

Chinese Police have arrested those five Muslims connected with the jeep bombing a few days ago.

The Chinese authorities say they have caught five suspected Islamist militants in the wake of the “terrorist attack” on Tiananmen Square which killed five and wounded dozens.
Officials have also released details about the occupants of the jeep which caused the chaos, slamming into a crowd of tourists and security officers before bursting into flames.

They identified the driver as Usmen Hasan, whose name, local media reported, suggests he was an ethnic Uighur, a Muslim minority living in the far western region of Xinjiang.

His wife and mother were with him in the car, along with devices filled with gasoline, knives and a flag with “religious extremist content” written on it, a police statement said.

The vehicle ploughed into pedestrians in the square, which has drawn occasional protests since 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations were suppressed by the military. Sources earlier told Reuters it was a suspected suicide attack.

“Police have identified Monday’s incident at Tiananmen Square as a violent terrorist attack which was carefully planned, organised and premeditated,” police said, adding the three people in the vehicle died after they set the gasoline on fire.

The other two people killed were tourists. At least 38 people were injured.

Five people connected with the incident were caught just 10 hours after the attack, with help from the Xinjiang government, the police said, all of whom also have names that suggest they are Uighur.

Police said they had seized Islamist militant flags and knives from where they were staying.

Hmmm! Probably a bit late, and too far down in the postings to generate much interest, but I just had to post about my incredulity with the fuss (!) that some elements in the media are making about the Americans allegedly eavesdropping on other nation’s communications.

Look, I don’t knew whether they are or not – and I’m not too bothered either way.

But the way some media outlets are spinning the tale one could be forgiven for thinking that many nations had never before in the history of mankind spied on or listened to the classified traffic generated in the normal course of peacetime international military/diplomatic relations.

As for war-time. Puh-lease folks! Doesn’t anyone remember how the Brits eavesdropped on Axis comms in WW2? And even intercepted, interrupted and interfered with them? Please see the copious open source writings and publications on this subject arising out of WW2 and the Cold War.

if anyone in this day and age thinks that a nation’s internal communications are free from overhearing – or should be – then my advice would be to wake up and smell the foul brew that underlies international communications in the 21st Century.

To quote a prominent New Zealander: “This aint tiddley winks y’know!!”

I just read a recent story saying that the NSA spied on 124 billion phone calls in just one month earlier in the year. And 97 billion bits of information from computers. They’re scooping up everything people do on Google, Facebook, Yahoo, and pretty much everything else.

If it was to keep everyone safe because of global terrorism then I can see that, but is that the reason they are doing it?

To be honest, I just don’t trust Obama or anyone in his Administration. He has proven himself untrustworthy – spying on the AP reporters, using the IRS to target and attack his opponents, using info (obviously gleaned from spying) against Petraeus.

Obama is proving to be a tyrant.

What it all comes down to – it isn’t that spying is being done, and it’s not the information gleaned, it’s who is using it.

Just what I was thinking listening to Morning Report this morning. It was when they broke the high command’s comms that the real breakthroughs were made and the first of those was the Russian victory at Kursk where they were able to give the Russians not just the plan but the entire order of battle. I don’t like that he won reelection as president, but maybe it is for the best. Now in his second term, people can see what he really is. He isn’t going out with some good reputation. It’s only going to get worse as time goes by as well.

I think pot should be legal, but I’m not sure what you expect people to say in regards to this event. This man was reckless and paid with his life. You are right, his actions are exactly equivalent to someone who drinks and drives. But given that he is dead, what more can be done? And in what way does this event impact on pot use, and whether it should be legal, in general?

Don’t drink and drive, don’t get high and fly.

All it takes is a change of Government, or revolution, and all bets – friends and allies-wise – are off. Far better to be up with the play all the time rather than only when some nation gets off-side with you.

That some might cling to such a notion would hardly seem to justify taking that assumption as the starting point for any conversation on the subject. It just becomes a straw man against reasonable opposition to current legislation.

The drug is certainly not harmless and, in general, public consumption is not purely a private matter. But on relative terms it is less harmful than alcohol and as much a private matter as alcohol consumption. But if you smoke dope all day instead of getting a job, or if you get high and operate dangerous equipment, or if you encourage and facilitate minors to smoke, then you deserve the same criticism that would be warranted if the same was done with alcohol.

In general I don’t see people using every crash involving a drunk driver as a basis to advocate prohibiting alcohol. This one event, however, seems to have become a rallying point for those opposed to liberalization of drug laws. Perhaps it’s not the silence that is deafening, but rather the hysterical handwringing of those who would otherwise be silent if the crash involved alcohol, and if not silent they would be condemning the “nanny state” at any suggestion that such tragedies were a justification for tighter regulation.

I’m not sure how what I said contradicts what you just said. But yes, there are externalities. But those externalities should be judged consistently as with other drugs. The externalities associated with cannabis are no greater (and arguably much smaller) than alcohol and moreover there is limited evidence that our current regulation is very effective at reducing those externalities, but lots of evidence that current legislation creates new and unintended problems greater than the problem which it is attempting to fix.

I just had a quick look at their website and from what I can see their advocacy for cannabis is on relative terms. Your portrayal of their advocacy therefore appears quite dishonest (or simply misinformed). I presume Miteria Turei is the same and from my recollection Green Party advocacy likewise treats the issue on relative terms, and about harm minimization through treating the issue as a health issue, not a criminal issue.

I understand from a friend in the US that there are stirrings of a very serious movement to impeach Obama, because many of the things hes has done have been in direct opposition to the constitution, and his massive failures – Benghazi, Fast and Furious. IRS spying etc are all highly illegal, and the massive lies he tells – particularly in relation to Obamacare.
The only way he’s getting away with it is that he is protected by cronyism and a very compliant liberal media.

But his birds are coming home to roost. It wouldn’t surprise me to see steps taken in the next 12 months.

Of course it is a justification. That you disagree with it does not make it “no kind of justification”. It’s just one you disagree with but, as usual with prohibitionists, provide no reasoning for your disagreement.

My argument is a form of modus tollens. That is, if a substance being harmful necessarily justifies its illegality then all harmful substances should be illegal. Not all harmful substances are illegal, therefore a substance being harmful does not necessarily justify its illegality.

You on the other hand are engaging in special pleading. Essentially you are arguing for an exception (one harmful drug remain legal while others remain illegal) without justifying that exception.

They don’t need to legalise majurana, but they do need to decriminalise it – or at least the personal use of it.

Apart from the cost of tying the justice system up with offenders who get slapped with wet bus tickets, or let off, there is the argument that if personal use is not a criminal offence, then it will decrease the strength of it as a gateway drug.

Due to it’s illegal status young and vulnerable people come under the radar of pushers of harder drugs. De-criminalising it will or at least should decrease that aspect.

Of course possession and supply of it will and should remain illegal.

@ Weihana – yes, not all harmful substances are illegal – alcohol for starters and many cold and flu medications – some that do far more social harm than other forms of illicit drugs.

Of course any impeachment would merely be symbolic given that he will never be convicted in the Senate, and given that it is no doubt the wingnut brigade in the Republican Party that would push for this sort of thing we shall see if those Republicans who still have their feet on the ground will risk something so stupid and something that will be viewed as unpopular and would likely further damage the Republican brand (which is already at historic lows) due to the obvious partisan nature of such an impeachment.

BTW, you do realize that if Obama were actually removed from office, Biden would become the president? 🙂
