“So I was driving along with my partner, and we were continuing on with a discussion we had started earlier. Jane had her point of view, and I had mine. Well, this turned into one hell of an argument, with Jane sticking to her guns and refusing to see my side. The stupid cow just refused to understand what I was talking about, and finally I had enough. I slammed on the brakes, pulled over, and told her to get the f**k out of the car and walk the rest of the way. It took a few seconds for it to sink in, then she started blubbing. “But it’s raining – my clothes will be ruined – it’s a 90 minute walk.” Well boo f**king hoo, you should’ve thought of that before you started arguing – get out. Finally she got the idea that I was serious, and clambered out, sobbing loudly. It was pelting down by now, and I felt a bit sorry for her – but as I drove away, I thought, sometimes you have to be tough to teach them a lesson.”

By now you’re probably thinking, what a PRICK. You don’t make your missus get out of the car and walk for 90 minutes in the rain because of an argument, you bloody macho male chauvanist pig. Well I’ll confess, although that story is true, I changed the details slightly. Here’s the REAL story:

The couple in question were Andrew Fagan and Karyn Hay. The only difference is, SHE made HIM get out of the car and walk.

So, are you still thinking what a PRICK she is? Or is this somehow different, because she’s a woman? It seems that it is, because I sure haven’t seen any comments complaining about what Karyn did, but if HE had kicked HER out of the car there’d be calls for his head on a platter. So if there is this acceptance that it’s different and that’s okay, men just have to accept it, is this an example of the “male-bashing culture” or the “anti-male agenda” that exists in New Zealand? Or am I going to be called a misogynist (which seems to be THE trendy word at the moment) for daring to point out this inequality?

It is, perhaps, a tribute to John Key that the 72,000 people who have petitioned him to “find justice” (whatever that means) for the Roast Busters’ victims evidently think him sufficiently omnipotent to do so. On the downside, these same people are probably the sort that blame him when anything goes wrong in this country.

The petition is gratuitous. The whole exercise seems vigilante based.

If the arrogant pricks are guilty, they deserve justice, as do their victims deserve justice of a sympathetic and supportive nature.

Vigilante actions contribute nothing …other than to suggest a MS media driven sick, society.

In the light of Roast Busters, It makes one wonder what is the latest situation with Hunters Corner. Claims were made a while back that police were ignoring prostitution crimes there, especially involving girls under 16. The organisers and clients potentially face very serious charges in such cases and surely it should have been a top priority police matter at the time. If the girls are 16 – 18, it is not quite so serious but needs a good look at. Either the police successfully nipped that one or perhaps it is still festering away. If the latter, this should be thrown into the investigation pot too, along with Roast Busters.

Not sure the shopkeepers and other locals would agree with that given what I’ve read peter. I think they just want it gone and rightly so.

We want a bye Election in Auckland. If Brown thinks it’s ok to spend $3.73 mio on a “living wage” and that debt is ok then $2 mio for a bye Election is nothing.
He lost his mandate when he started giving jobs for sex and if Brown thinks he still has the support of Auckland then he should put it to the test by standing again.

They’re speculating the latest typhoon to hit the PIs is a climate change issue and note the Phillipine Islands know all about such storms.

Is this prediction meant to try say that Bill English’s comment yesterday of no money for election give aways , is showing how mean the Government is and Labour will be in the position to spend the predicted $1 bill before they even get into Govt. with heeps of election bribes.

Let’s spare a thought – and maybe a few $s – for the poor people in the central Philippines. Looking at the photos and reading the reports, my heart goes out to them.

I’m pleased that our government has pledged aid (I think its $2.15 million) and in addition to this, private donations are reported to be flooding in via the NZ Red Cross and other organisations.

Poor bastards. It must be hell there right now.

@kowtow. In the comment I saw Kea did not imply or insinuate George was anything of the sort. And I don’t believe Kea thinks so for one minute either.

Lot of people putting 2 and 2 together and getting 22.

thedavincimode – While Hunters Corner businesses may want all local prostitution wiped out, if the women are over 18 there are no offences committed (except possibly against town planning rules) and it is not a police matter. I am merely indicating that there should be top policing priority on prostitution involving under 16yo girls. In the process there would be some ‘by catch’ involving 16-18yo – this sort of enforcement would solve much of the problem as it would force out the biggest ratbags. This should be ‘easy cop’ work compared with other policing efforts.

bhudson at 9:24 am – That’s not how I read it, to be honest, I saw it more as him trying to give the full background as to what led up to his comments. And if he was trying to excuse himself, I don’t think he would’ve written this at the end:

I completely understand the arguments now behind ‘victim blaming’, and as a co-host on RadioLIVE I will try to address those attitudes that I wittingly (because it came out of my own mouth) appear to have fostered.

But fair call on your part. It’s difficult to discern the true motivation behind written words, far easier when you’re face to face with the person. Maybe I have misread it and misjudged Andrew.

Ross yup, this is the same Labour Govt that had, what, 8 billion in surplus while they were in power and refused to give any tax cuts while those across the ditch had several in the same time period. The same Labour Govt that then blew all the money on Cullen’s train set and goodness knows what else just so that the incoming Nats wouldn’t have any money. And Parker has the temerity to say it’s about time?

BTW lest we forget that this is the same David Parker who should have been ousted for making false declarations to the New Zealand Companies Office in his business dealings back in 2005/2006.

I read the post that Kea made, within seconds of it being posted, mostly noticing it because my name was mentioned.

My first impression was one of shock – in the context of the conversation at the time, it read very much like he was accusing PG as being a either a rapist/kiddie fiddler or at least a ‘latent rapist’ and rapist supporter.

Now I know Kea does not and did not mean it to come across like that. I do understand what he was trying to do, as well as offer a rebuttal insult (he was being challenged by constant debate), he was also trying to make the point that as is often the case, some people who speak out strongly against something, do so to cover their own insecurities and inner beliefs.

His post followed several others, that appeared to be getting increasingly personal – I enjoy Kea’s sense of humour, and we agree and disagree on many things, but I think in the long run share a mutual respect for each others perspectives. We are both passionate people who reflect that in our narrative. But that particular day I had actually noted my concern to him that he really needed to consider what he was saying, as it was coming across in a manner, that maybe he wasn’t aware of – and that was before he posted the comment being discussed.

I also think that his comment was ‘above necessary’. As parents, uncles, extended family or whatever, of young females, of course the subject of rape is an emotional one – it is always going to bring out the ‘animal instinct of protection’ and when there is someone seemingly being so protective to the ‘rapist’, and offering all sorts of excuses for their actions, of course it is going to meet with opposition.

Kea may not have been aware of how his comments were being perceived, but as an intelligent person he was aware that they were insulting.

Which brings me to another point – the events we were all discussing had a very strong consensus regarding the role of the internet, and what appears on it, and the manner in which its free and easy access can have some very negative impacts on society, particularly young people.

So isn’t it a pertinent point? Should someone be able to imply (either intentionally or not) that a person (whose full identity is exposed) is a criminal, a secret sex offender – to write such on a blog which anyone can read and be influenced by?

There has been so much said about social responsibility, and the role it plays in moderating the kind of behaviour we have been made aware of this past week. Surely, as mature adults, most of whom on this blog I respect for their intelligence, it is up to us to also moderate ourselves, and lead by example? We can still have fun, we can still make our point, and of course heavily disagree, and even fire the odd insult – but Kea’s comment was ‘below the belt’ and in my opinion, he took it too far and into the same realm of the behaviour we’ve been critical of in others.

I hope Kea is reading, and will be back soon, I miss his banter, and I know he is intelligent enough to understand the point being made and that no lines have been drawn, but a common concern for the direction that the discussion was heading.

Was I hallucinating?

I thought I saw Len Brown on TVNZ news last night. He was in the line-up of blokes supporting the white ribbon campaign against violence on females.

They all chanted out a pledge, and wore the white bow on their lapels. Was it Len Brown? Did anyone-else see this TV news item?

Of course Brown is not associated with violence against females, but you would think he would keep his head down on women’s issues for a while (no pun intended).

On another topic, the Jackson-Tamihere suspension from Radio Live: can the apology of Radio Live’s owner, MediaWorks, have any standing at all while MediaWorks refuses to say whehter Jackson and Tamihere will be on pay during their suspension?

Are they getting a paid holiday after this furore? If so, surely it adds to the validity of the usually scorned suggestion that perhaps the whole Jackson-Tamihere furore is a publicity stunt for RadioLive. (Of course, I don’t for a second suggest that the RoastBusters’ alleged offending was itself associated with any radio stunt).

The latest RadioLive incident, with Fagan and Hay (as outlined in the first post in this thread) and Fagan’s conversation with a woman and her experience as a 14-year-old, adds to RadioLive’s free publicity.

he drove into an area of dense bush. There he assaulted the [9 year old] boy, creating a 4-centimetre hole inside his mouth down to the jawbone. The victim ended up on the ground and Krouse put the heel of his shoe on the boy’s neck.

The boy struggled and Krouse pushed down harder until the boy stopped moving and lost consciousness. Krouse told the police later he thought he had killed the boy but then felt a pulse and could hear gurgling as the boy attempted to breathe through the blood in his mouth.

The effort includes assisting countries and territories of the region in enacting laws to deal with the proceeds of crime, mutual legal assistance, confiscation, forfeiture and extradition; providing guidance in setting up systems for reporting and investigating suspicious transactions and helping in the establishment of financial intelligence units. The APG also enables regional factors to be taken into account in the implementation of anti-money laundering measures.

The origins of the APG go back to “awareness raising” activities undertaken by the FATF in the early 1990s as part of its strategy to encourage adoption of money laundering counter-measures throughout the world. In order to achieve more concrete results, Australia agreed to set up a Secretariat for the purpose of obtaining regional commitment and establishing a regional FATF-style body with practical objectives. Subsequently, an agreement was reached in Bangkok in 1997 which created the APG. The first meeting was held in Tokyo in 1998 and then annually thereafter.

Following the events of 11 September 2001, the APG expanded its scope to include the countering of terrorist financing. The APG conducts mutual evaluations of its members and holds a periodic workshop on money laundering methods and trends. Its work mandate has been set out in a document containing specific terms of reference for the group.

The APG is supported by a Secretariat, which serves as the focal point for its activities. The APG became an Associate Member of the FATF in 2006.

FINANCIAL ACTION TASK FORCE ON MONEY LAUNDERING (FATF) – THE INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS SETTER FOR AML/CFT
The first co-operative and global policy response to the threats posed by money laundering was by the G7 group of countries who established the FATF in 1989. Since 1989, the FATF has produced a comprehensive set of international standards against money laundering and terrorist financing. The core documents of the FATF include:

The 2012 revised FATF 40 Recommendations on Money Laundering , Terrorist Financing and Proliferation Financing (“the standards”), which includes interpretative notes;
Methodology for assessing compliance with the standards; and
Best Practice Guidelines for implementation of the standards.

The 2012 FATF standards contain certain core, or essential, recommendations including the requirement to:

Criminalise money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing in accordance with international law;

Freeze terrorist assets and confiscate the proceeds of crime;

Establish a financial intelligence unit to collect, analyse, evaluate and disseminate suspicious transaction reports from financial institutions and other reporting entities;

Supervise those financial institutions and other reporting entities to ensure compliance with customer due diligence and other requirements contained in the standards; and

Ensure that comprehensive and effective mechanisms are in place to cooperate effectively on the international level given the growing international dimension to these crimes.

These standards have been accepted internationally as the global policy benchmark for anti-money laundering, anti-terrorist financing and anti-proliferation financing measures by the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and many other international organisations and bodies. The key changes to the FATF standards included in the 2012 revised version are as follows:

Requirement for countries to undertake a national risk assessment;

Measures relating to proliferation financing;

Addition of tax crimes as predicate offences to money laundering;

Measures relating to domestic politically exposed persons;

Requirement for countries to ratify the UN Convention Against Corruption.

I have to wonder why seemingly intelligent people define their ‘sides’ on all subjects entirely on their belief of whether or not David Bain is guilty or innocent.

It seems extremely small minded to me. My belief in his innocence does not decide my stance on other aspects of life and living, or who I side with in discussions on religion or abortion, or what constitutes good nutrition, or a decent political party, or anything else other than the topic of the Bain murders/suicide.

I feel sorry for people who are so narrow-minded that they feel it necessary to ridicule whatever a person has to say on anything, just because on one subject they are on different sides. It’s the sort of thing one might expect in a child’s playground, where the kids with tricycles are ridiculed by those with skateboards.

I note how the weak and small minded like to point out the ‘sides’ by placing their sign post saying “don’t listen to this person – they think something different to you about something else totally unrelated’. It must be quite sad to have your whole belief system defined by one very small part of the bigger picture.

Barry Soper reported that taxpayer $$$ were used from the Greens’ leader fund to get Jan Logie over to Sri Lanka. That they granted her a visa for “fact finding” to which she basically lied to them about and got booted out of the country.

Now, any use of the leader fund has to be approved by the Speaker of the House, so has it now transpired that she deliberately mislead the Speaker to have the taxpayer $$$ granted?

If so, this is a complete contempt of Parliament.
