Paedophile’s sentence disappoints victims

Victims of a prominent Far North businessman who were sexually abused while in his care have expressed disappointment at the sentence handed down today.

Daniel Taylor, 34, a former foster parent for Child Youth and Family, was sentenced to five years and seven months behind bars when he appeared for sentencing in the High Court at Whangarei this morning.

Another homosexual paedophile leaves a trail of victims. Like many I think the sentence is far too light but will a longer sentence deter others? Sadly I think the answer is probably not. However, stopping these homosexual perverts getting access to children might. I just heard on the news that people were asking questions about the sicko as far back as 2007.

Melissa Lee : How many submissions did the Productivity Commission receive on its issues paper and its draft report, and did any of the substantive submissions raise concerns about the impact of foreign buyers on housing affordability?
Hon Dr NICK SMITH : The Productivity Commission’s issues paper specifically inquired into whether offshore investment had any impact on the New Zealand housing market. The issues paper resulted in 60 submissions from people around New Zealand and not one of those submissions raised the issue of overseas purchasers contributing to price increases, nor in the 90 submissions that it received on the draft report was any issue raised. The report concluded that there was no evidence of foreign buyers having any impact on house prices. It did find an identifiable impact of returning New Zealanders on house prices in some markets, but the last thing that members on this side of the House would want to do is stop successful Kiwis coming home.

Here, There, and Back Again: A New Zealand Case Study of Chinese Circulatory Transmigration

January 2012

There have been significant outflows and returns of Chinese migrants from various homelands in the past two to three decades, and they have generated media attention, sparked policy debate, and prompted academic researchers in new directions of investigations.

First it was the exodus of highly educated professionals with transferable skills leaving their Chinese homelands (Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the People’s Republic of China [PRC]) for various new destinations in the Pacific Rim. For example, between the signing of the 1984 Sino-British Agreement in Hong Kong and its reversion to China in 1997, an estimated 500,000 Hong Kong citizens left, voting with their feet.

Similar to their Hong Kong counterparts, the Taiwanese emigrated in large numbers in the late 1990s when the home government ended military rule, relaxed the right of travel, and allowed the Taiwanese to take liquid assets abroad. Migrants from the PRC were comparatively the most recent group to emigrate, but quickly made up for lost time with their overwhelming numbers.

As a result, little Chinatowns and distinctive ethnoburbs sprang up in various Pacific Rim cities like Vancouver, Sydney, and Auckland. The comparatively affluent Chinese migrants bought up prime real estate and built opulent houses in hitherto quiet, leafy suburbs, visibly changing the physical look of those cities and raising anxiety among local residents.

Then, equally spectacularly, the wave of immigration seemed to suddenly turn to homeward flights. According to Hong Kong government statistics, over 300,000 Hong Kong citizen emigrants had returned by 2007. Of the returnees, 35 percent came from Canada, 24 percent from Australia and New Zealand, 12 percent from the United Kingdom, and 11 percent from the United States.

This return migration flow has attracted a great deal of scholarly research and has become a special topic within migration studies. However, as time has progressed, it has become evident that those who returned to their countries of origin after a stint of overseas experience quite often did not really stay put for prolonged periods. Instead of resettling in their countries of origin as they were expected to do, many kept on moving, either to a third country or back again to the initial destination country.

This new trend of mobility, characterized by frequent commutes, short-term visits and sojourns of various family members in both the country of origin and destination, and sometimes relocation to a third country, is what I call “circulatory transmigration.”

Finding 2: The Contrast between Younger and Older Migrants
In our project, Chinese migrants in the younger age group (ages 15 to 44) were found to be significantly more attached to their homeland identity than their older counterparts who are 45 and older. Over 66 percent of the younger persons reported that they were Chinese/Taiwanese/Hong Konger, while only 45 percent of the older group claimed country-of-origin identity in a similar way.
This finding apparently contradicts a classical assumption in migration studies that older migrants are more conservative, set in their attachment to their native homeland, and find it harder to adapt to new environments. Younger migrants, on the other hand, are expected to acquire destination-country values more easily — especially if they are educated there.
The findings of this study, however, indicate that the younger cohort are more attached than their older counterparts to their native homeland and feel that their identity is more Chinese than anything else. The different percentages claiming a hybrid identity (25.8 percent in the younger group, 33 percent in the older group) are also significant (see Figure 3).
This finding is surprising in that it contravenes accepted migration and acculturation theories. It also carries significant implications for future interpretation of the migrants’ sense of allegiance and their acculturation process.
Although the younger group might have a shorter history in the destination country, most of them are either children of principal migrants or young skilled migrants themselves (international students and other temporary permit holders were not recruited into the pool of participants for this project). This younger age group should therefore theoretically feel equally committed to their settlement in New Zealand as their older counterparts.
The fact that younger Chinese migrants are more attached to their Chinese identity than older immigrants could be due to the resurgence of overseas Chinese nationalism in recent years. China’s rising international status as an emergent world power would likely impress young patriotic Chinese much more than it would their older compatriots, as many of the latter might have had negative first-hand experiences during the early decades of the PRC.
Based on this finding, it is likely that younger Chinese migrants would be more likely to succumb to the strong pull of China, whereas the older group might be more cautious towards China and find New Zealand’s relaxed lifestyle and politically tolerant society more appealing. This difference in the sense of identity might likely impact the future migration trajectories of the two groups.

Something that won’t be covered by DPF: the number of civil servants is about the same as when Helen Clark left. As of June 2013, we have 44,500 FTEs. Average base salary: $68,561. FTEs in December 2008? 45,297.

Two observations:

1. There have been no cuts.

2. To John Key worshippers: but Labour would have been worse. Yeah right.

Purely by looking at the numbers John Key has only made a negative difference to NZ. Government has grown, tax has gone up, debt has gone up.

Interesting given all the regulation, size of the State & taxation the RBNZ has decided to simply print money or allow the banks to create credit out of thin air. This has got NZ through since 1999 otherwise the NZ economy would have collapsed under the shit weight of govt long ago.

Conservatives benefited from Keys comments, but once Craig got a a heap of media exposure the poll goes down. That should be a warning to National and to voters.

Nearly all votes he claims have to be cannibalised off National. Apart from the religious Pacific Islanders & possibly Brian Tamaki’s rabble, neither of which are guaranteed supporters, where are the additional votes coming from?

Conventional wisdom holds that elections are won & lost at the centre…..not at the extremes of the political spectrum.

All this bleating about the typhoon,global warming and the evil wealthy west causing it deliberately avoids the fact that the Phillipines is notoriously corrupt ,inept ,inefficient and complacent about the conditions the majority of its long suffering citizens live in.

If they had a wee bit of town planning and construction standards,a rule of law and honest government made up of engaged citizens rather than a corrupt and lazy political elite milking the place for all its worth then they would not have shanty towns built in bays,river estuaries etc that are totally exposed to the normal ,seasonal and extremely destructive forces of nature that are a regular feature of the climate in that part of the world.

* CO2 is beneficial to mankind – and to all life.

* There is no such thing as peak oil
* Humans may cause a rise in localised temperatures, but the claim that this results in climate change is delusional
* Wind turbines have limited single site use, but are otherwise expensive bullshit
* The sea is NOT rising
* The sea is not becoming acidic
* Polar ice is not vanishing (North- situation normal and cyclical; South – ice cap increasing, and NOT melting)
* Glaciers are not melting beyond their historical norms
* Weather events are no worse , but are probably cyclically milder
* Anyone placing any credence on the crap spouted by Gareth Renowden and his Hot Topic blog is in need of a pshrink..

Whilst I agree with most of your post, especially concerning what appears to be an inappropriately small sentence considering the prolonged nature of his offending, and the harm he has done, I think you get a little confused regarding your statement ‘another homosexual pedophile’.

Paedophillia has very little to do with the normal classifications of heterosexual and homosexual.

It is the sexual attraction to the immature physique that provides the sexual arousal. It is the fact that the child is has not reached puberty, and therefore their physique has not matured sexually that becomes the default sexual attraction. To put it another way, it is the absence of sexuality in their victims that turns them on. Many pedophiles have both males and females among their victims.

I am not completely aware of the facts of the case you mention, but do you have any evidence that the perpetrator is in fact homosexual, that is he is sexually attracted to the mature physique of a male?

NZ have won 77% of their games all-time, compared with 63% for S Africa and 53% for England.

Comparing across sports is trickier, mainly because of differences in the relative easiness of drawing matches. So maybe one could compare two different stats here: what percent of games do you lose, and (taking draws out of the equation) how many do you win out of all wins and losses only.

The tops for various sports (major teams’ all-time records);
NZ (Rugby): Lose 20%, Win-Loss 79%
Brazil (Football): Lose 17%, Win-Loss 79%
Australia (Cricket): Lose 27%, Win-Loss 64%
Chicago Bears (NFL): Lose 41%, Win-Loss 58%

So, the All Blacks and Brazil are pretty close in terms of their ability to put out competitive teams over their entire histories. But that’s partly because top football teams play more games against weaker opposition. Brazil only has a small lead over the next best all-time record (England: 20% and 74%), while NZ has a huge lead over the next best rugby nation (S Africa: 32% and 66%).

In other words, historically and comparative, the All Blacks have been the most consistently competitive team in any major sport. Quite an achievement.

I think the problem is that there is an abundance of evidence out there, supporting both sides of the argument.
That confuses many people, including myself.

When we are presented with visual images that appear to prove the existence of Global Warming – such the recent severe storm, that exceeds anything within our living memory, it is only natural to seek answers, and to wonder why it has happened.

Nature has both fascinated and confused humankind for centuries. Imagine the ‘global denialists’ and their insistence that world was indeed flat. After all, the evidence was right there in front of them – when you sailed far enough away, you dropped out of site, and usually never returned. That’s pretty convincing. Or at least was at the time.

Of course today the arguments become complicated by the prevalence of ‘mistrust’. The importance of money has mean that the pursuit of profit brings all sorts of motivations into the arena – motivations which work both for and against the argument.

When it comes to nature, I prefer the ‘what will be, will be’ defense – having said that I also don’t believe in ‘pulling the tail of the tiger’.

Whilst I would love to attend the event, my emotional attachment lies at Passchendaele, and it is there I intend to pay my respects in October 2017 (the 100th Anniversary of the day in which more New Zealander’s were killed than on any other in recorded history).

I think I will wait until the animal kingdom give us a sign as to whether the phenomena exists or not. As I indicated, I believe in the power of nature – even if humans constantly misinterpret ‘her’, if there is anything to be worried about, the animals will eventually react or not, proving one side correct – or maybe everything will end in a massive catastrophe – in which no one will survive to say ‘I told you so’.

Either way – the whole thing seems to require using the side of my brain that just doesn’t want to understand the arguments on both sides.

Yeah, I kind of figured that, and that’s fine, I can accept the votes down because of that – anything to make their day a little brighter, but if it is because people have an issue with ANZAC commemorations, or perhaps that it is a ballot, or maybe that Gallipoli is celebrated over Passchendaele, then I would be interested to hear their arguments. Perhaps it just that the politics of WWI upset them, or maybe they think it is time to ‘move on’ and forget? It’s a topic that interests me.

Judith, the first thing to do might be to check whether the rhetoric about the Philippines storm was accurate. I would assert that as the statements made by the climate alarmism crowd are so mendacious, that in general everything they say has to be suspect. That storm was not the most powerful in the area or to to hit land, didn’t have the lowest central pressure, didn’t have the highest death toll, etc, and etc. That crowd are simply playing the politics of soundbites, make blatantly untrue assertions on the basis that most of the media is in the tank with them and will never check, and rely on those lies colouring the debate in their favour.

The problem for Norman and Clint re CC is that they must realise the political tide ( internationally) is turning against their religion. We have had Tony Abbott come out with his phrase ” socialism masquerading as environmentalism” ( I think in time this will go down as much quoted phrase) , then the Canadians came out in support of the Aussies, Cameron in the UK, despite his vested interests, is slowly making a turn as he realises how bad the UK energy situation is and a German politician has made a speech recently crtiticising the IPCC as a source of facts. All this on top of massive turn arounds in renewable energy policies , removal of subsidies etc etc.
There is plenty of factual information on the internet showing Norman’s speech on the recent cyclone in the Phillipines is absolute BS.
One word for the tweeting campaign above in PGs post –desperation. They don’t realise it is not a big ogre anymore to publically say you don’t agree with AGW ( like it might have been 4-5 yars ago).

Yesterday, on MSNBC’s Jansing and company Byran Norcorss of the Weather Channel was asked if global warming had anything to do with Typhoon Haiyan or other recent storms. The meteorologist answered the scientific consensus was no.
Keep in mind, if global warming had caused Haiyan, Sandy and other big storms, we would have had Haiyan-like tropical storms on a regular basis for the past 16 years, because global temperatures haven’t changed since the mid-late 1990s.

That is true it the victims are quite young – say under 12. However, when the victim are 12 to 15 the victims of a particular peadophile is usually one sex or the other. Please do not argue about some dictionary definition of peadophile.

Ross12 – I don’t disagree with AGW, I think there is ample evidence and logic to support it. But I question how much there is and what if anything we can do about it. And if we need to do anything about it.

Claiming now that we have a terrible long term problem and immediate drastic action must be taken or we are doomed has some scientific backing but far more unknowns.

I haven’t bothered to look for science or facts that effectively separate AGW from possible climate cycles, but I think that must be very difficult to accurately determine.

We have no way of knowing what natural climate cycles would have done over the next 100 years without AGW – it could have stayed relatively stable, it could have warmed up or it could have slowed down. Or all three at different times.

If we go into a natural cooling cycle then AGW could slow this down which could be beneficial. We can’t bet on that but we also can’t bet on AGW continuing to raise the temperature.

I agree with the distinction between weather and climate. But I just love how each side only seems to make that distinction when it suits them. I am quite confident that the next cold winter to hit we will see the usual “lol, do those red melons who believe in AGW know how cold it is outside?”.

In any case, I don’t think your representation of the IPCC position is quite accurate.

In summary, this assessment does not revise the SREX conclusion of low confidence that any reported long-term centennial) increases in tropical cyclone activity are robust, after accounting for past changes in observing capabilities. More recent assessments indicate that it is unlikely that annual numbers of tropical storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes counts have increased over the past 100 years in the North Atlantic basin. Attributing this to climate change, however, is questionable. Your assertion that the “red melons” are “plain wrong” seems to express a level of certainty unwarranted by the evidence.

I think it’s entirely reasonable to question the degree to which increased CO2 has impacted the climate. Current estimates for climate sensitivity express a range of different outcomes from quite severe (4.5 deg) to somewhat more moderate (1.5-2.0 deg).

Clearly some believe sensitivity to be lower than 1.5 but the evidence in favour of that viewpoint is rather scarce. Ultimately a lot of this viewpoint boils down to what you just said which is how do we know what we don’t know?

This position is untenable in my view because we could never do anything if the standard we must meet is to prove that which we don’t know. Rational people take into account what they do know while being open minded about what they don’t know. But the mere possibility that there may exist things that we don’t know is no reason to ignore other things we might know more about.

If someone believes in AGW they need to come up with a mechanism, a plausible scientific model, and some evidence to support their theory. They don’t get to go “well there might be a mechanism, who knows?”. They have to build an actual theory which can be supported with evidence. This has been done with AGW. It is by no means beyond all doubt, and they are often finding out new things which changes their model or theory of what is happening. But they do at least have a case to make and I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss that case on nothing more than “we don’t know what we don’t know”.

BTW, I’m not saying there aren’t better arguments against the consensus viewpoint, just saying that this particular argument is not a good one.

Surely it can’t be true that taxpayers (via the IRD) may cover some of investors’ losses in the Ross Asset Management ponzi scam?

Wouldn’t that imply a capital gains tax? If these investors (suckers?), who were obviously lured in by high returns, now can write off some of the capital losses against tax assets isn’t this just the other side of a capital gains tax? Would they have had to pay tax on their capital gains? Yeah right.

If this is true, surely every investor whose shares have gone down in value can use the fall as a set-off against his or her tax assessment?

What sort of a donkey-welfare-socialist fools’ paradise has NZ become? Taxpayers are now going to offset losses in ponzi schemes? And what is centre-leftist National bleating about when it warns voters against Labour-Green capital gains tax plans? And what happened to the notion that high returns were to cover higher risk?

Ross Asset Management’s liquidators received a letter from IRD yesterday detailing a mechanism for investors to file amended tax returns.

This would be done on the basis that the actual value of their investments was lower than when they filed their original tax returns.

The dictionary definition has nothing to do with it Chuck. There is a big difference between a sexual predator who targets a sexually mature body and one that targets a non-sexualised body. The difference is not in the word, but in the actual difference in body.

If the victims concerned were physically mature, then the perpetrator’s predatory behaviour is to do with the immature mind of the victim making them an easy target – however the sexual attraction – what turns them on leading to sexual action – is the mature male or female form (the normal sexual cues).

A pedophile is turned on by a non-sexualised body. An absence of the normal sexualised body changes that comes with puberty. Children that have both the immature mind and the immature body is who they seek for victims.

You can argue the point all you like in your effort to target homosexuals, but the fact remains that there is a big difference between the two types of sexual offender mentioned here – and attempting to combine them into one overarching category, does not, and will not assist in providing information to assist in dealing and eradicating the harm that sexual offences do in society.

I’m quite surprised that figure isn’t an even 5/10, given that mathematical skill is dominated by one side of the brain, and that it is generally believed that half the population are dominant of one side or other.

The left side is believed to be logical, whilst the right side is creative. Some reports say that females are more likely to be stronger in the right side than the left and so on. Hence why I thought there would be relatively equal proportions of ‘math likers’ and haters.

On actual values? Then it’s a capital gains basis. Isn’t this just a retrospective “out” for investors whose high-return investment has tanked? Why for investors in a ponzi scheme why not for investors in mainstream companies that have dived. I can think of quite a few legimitate companies, particularly in high tech that have added economic value to NZ, and where there is no retrospective refiling of tax returns.

What’s going on? What are actual values? Are these to be determined in hindsight for everyone?

The asset values of many legitimate companies have proved in hindsight to have been inaccurately overvalued. Why is this different from someone whose shares have tanked, and then there is found retrospectively that asset values in the listed company’s annual returns have proved wildly optimistic and wrong. Would they be eligible for a tax reassessment? Yeah right.

If you read the link I gave the Herald labeled the man a peadophile. Most of his victims were boys between 12 and 16 and one was a boy under 12. The common usage of the term peadophile is an adult who has sex with someone under 16.

Are you trying say an adult having sex with a minor who has reached puberty is less harmful than an adult having sex with someone who has not reached puberty? If not what point are you trying to make?

The seas ph changes as it absorbs co2 .

* Polar ice is not vanishing (North- situation normal and cyclical; South – ice cap increasing, and NOT melting)
The records we have say otherwise.

* Glaciers are not melting beyond their historical norms
6000year old remains found melted out of ice.

* Weather events are no worse , but are probably cyclically milder
Last year NZ Aussie and the yanks are all record hot.

* Anyone placing any credence on the crap spouted by Gareth Renowden and his Hot Topic blog is in need of a pshrink..

Tax is a wee bit different to IFRS/IAS accounts Jack5, and the reassessment will be for those who actively trade in shares in that any unrealised gains or losses will be assessable. I see no issue there.

Capital Gains..both realised and unrealised also happens with non trading investors who have $50,000 or more interests that are overseas and not exempt from the FIF/CV regime, which is probably where these incorrect values were applied. Again..I see no issue there.

That’s a nutshell explanation

On actual values? Then it’s a capital gains basis.

Jack I’m assuming it would be imputation tax on the dividends that RAM said they had received on the basis of the investments that RAM said they had and which RAM actually did pay to the IRD on their behalf, since if it hadn’t then IRD would have told the taxpayers which would have blown his ponzi scheme.

Does that make sense?

Interesting that the comparison of sports didn’t include basketball. The US men’s basketball team would have a record as good, if not better than the ABs. 117-7 record in all games since 1992 (94% winning average compared to ABs around 85% over the same period), 14 Olympic titles in the last 80 years, and 3 World Cups in pretty much the same period the ABs won 2.

Doesn’t the capital gains tax on share trading relate supposedly to those who buy with the intention of trading those shares? Presumably that intention will be noted on some slip of paper that surfaces only after the sharemarket dives. Therefore it tends to be one way. Let’s just have a capital-gains tax and be done with it.

I don’t see how, if a high-returns scheme turns out to be a racket, there should be a tax reassment out, while if the investor puts money into something legitimate and of economic value to the country, like, say, something like but not necessarily Rakon, there is no out when asset values in hindsight proved to be wrong. (I’m not sure if this was the case for Rakon, but imagine a similar, hypothetical tech company in which high intellectual property valuations proved in hindsight to be grossly exaggerated).

Softening losses in ponzi schemes and Government elimination of losses from high-return investments in which the high return was largely for risk, seem wrong to me. (I’m thinking of the finance companies bailouts). Isn’t it creating moral hazard?

I just googled and found this from PWC about the Liquidation.

Have a look at the heading of Inland Revenue and you will find that the reassessments are primarily related to investments within a FIF regime. Note that the FIF regime does not apply to NZ investments.

You will find your answer there.

Details on Disciplinary proceedings for teachers open to public

Parliament’s Regulations review Committee had recommended Disciplinary Tribunal proceedings be opened up after lawyer Graeme Edgeler raised concerns that existing rules were being used to keep details of hearings secret.

The Government’s view is the recommendations should be acted on as a matter of priority and will amend the Education Act specifying Disciplinary Tribunal hearings be open to the public unless orders to the contrary are made on specified statutory grounds.

Someone who’s not even elected can make a difference.
