Yesterday I wrote a comment about rape; I was challenged on a number of points. I started by saying where Man fits into “my” Universe. I then say where sexual aggression — “rape” — fits into our evolution. I don’t think we can escape that. We didn’t “design” ourselves. Nor can we “redesign” ourselves. I am not saying assault ought be acceptable or legal in our society. But wishful thinking will not help us.

It may be inevitable that some life forms become more complex, because they become better adapted, but that does not mean evolution had a goal, and it was Homo sapiens or “something like”, as Weihana put it. Nor does it mean it wasn’t by chance – by accident. We were not “designed”, we are a funny mixture of past animals. As individuals we can reason but as a species we are not essentially rational, living as robots might. We are victims of fad and fashion muddling along.

Saying that Man serves his own purpose is like saying the purpose of a car is to be a car. Clearly our lives can have some meaning to ourselves, but Man has no purpose – except to worship gods if he chooses.

Einstein’s “spooky action at a distance”, entanglement, means we are all one. I don’t see any need for spirits. The Universe is a weird place — beyond our understanding — but it seems “real” to me. It’s an act of faith – in myself.

I wrote: “To survive, society needs structure and discipline.” I don’t see any evolutionary pressure. I would suggest rape and pillage is more “natural”. We don’t have to look far back into NZ history to see that.

How does the existence of barbarism contradict the superiority of civilized democracy?
I wrote: “We cling to the myth civilisation is man’s natural, preferred state; that democracy is superior and self-perpetuating. Actually, there is always barbarism.” I didn’t conflate civilisation and democracy. Civilisation is better for most people but all the big democracies are bankrupt, including USA. Once we discovered we could vote instead of working democracy was doomed.

BUT, they would not drill anything. They would simply turn on the printing press to produce the oil money that Norway salts away, day by day, in its futures fund.

The way Radio Aotearoa formerly New Zealand reported the soap dodgers protests ,you’d swear the whole country was up in arms about Anadarko,oil spills and global warming.

But then that’s what RNZ would like us to think.

Talking of economic sabotage and leftists double standards there’s a French warship docked in Dunedin at the moment……now these are the guys who nuked the South Pacific and bombed that silly protest ship in Auckland , yet they get to send ships here,while the Yanks who saved our bacon in 1942 ,are not welcome!

It’s Tuesday 26 November 2013, about 6.30am, and I’m about to get dressed, finish packing bag and get bus to 488 George St Sydney to attend a full day workshop at the Australian Public Sector Anti-Corruption Conference.

Have trimmed over 700 ‘business’ (NOT) cards, ready to do ‘swapsies’ with as many of the fellow attendees as possible.

ACTIVISM 101 – GET THEIR NAMES! 🙂

Tonight is a net-working event, so it will be quite a big day.

I have printed off copies of the request Lisa Prager and myself have made to the NZ Serious Fraud Office, requesting an investigation for alleged bribery and corruption by Mayor Len Brown and Sky City (Auckland), to discuss with anti-corruption experts and any Australian media who may be interested.

(It seems that many people I’ve spoken to here are aware of the Auckland Mayor ‘sex scandal’.
However, the fact that there was NO ‘due diligence’carried out by Auckland Council on the increased risk of money-laundering, arising from the NZ International Convention Centre (or – as I prefer to call it – the Sky City ‘money-laundering’ ) Act 2013, whilst on Mayor Len Brown’s ‘watch’, doesn’t appear to be so widely known, probably because of what seems to be effectively a mainstream media ‘blackout’ on this story?).

Meant of course in a caring way 🙂

Has anyone else noticed that in the photograph accompanying the Herald article, the ‘Save our Seas’ Banner is printed on a polypropylene /nylon background, using synthetic inks, that the hull of the yacht in the foreground is painted with oil-based paint and that the camera (or computer) being held by the individual in the centre of the photograph is largely composed of plastic materials, as are probably some of the apparel the two ‘protesters’ are wearing . As well there is a drum/bucket beside the mast near the right-hand side of the photo, which if not made of plastic |(most likely) is at minimum covered with a plastic covering with lettering printed upon-it.

The last I heard, the polypropylene, and plastics to which I have referred were all made from the evil material ‘OIL”.

A slight stench of hypocrisy methinks….

BTW: Should the Tasman cut up rough (as it is renowned for so-doing), and a ‘protest yacht’ gets into difficulties, international maritime law would require the drilling vessel to come to the yacht’s aid. One has to wonder if these protesting-individual’s ‘Green’ principles would still hold if they had to chose between accepting salvation from the ‘enemy’ or sinking, and, if they were rescued, whether they would ‘accept’ the ships hospitality or just sit, wail, and continue to plot.

Hypothetical certainly (so far) but one does wonder…

Prime Minister John Key said said the Navy could be brought in to deal with the Vega.

The beginnings of martial law. Australian soldiers have already been reported questing NZ citizens on the st.

In the US there’s a law against the military policing the citizens. Posse Comatatus. which seems to be stripped away.

No surprise then we seeing the military intruding here.

Times have changed. No military were used during the Springbok protests. A soldier did tell me army personnel were used to photograph protest leaders.

Hardly, navies have always policed the oceans. By your definition, New Zealand has had martial law for a pretty long time – in fact right back to James Cook’s time.

In any case, the local cop at Raglan could ask the navy for assistance and the navy would then be legally assisting the police. Granted the navy would want affirmation from higher authority before giving assistance of this sort.

The New Zealand sovereign law under which this drilling ship is operating is very clear; all other vessels must remain at a distance of at least 500 metres from this vessel. The law does not stop vessels of any sort from approaching the ship, it merely says that, for their safety, they must remain outside a specifically-defined legal barrier.This is the law of the sovereign state of New Zealand. it is law that is recognised internationally by most other sovereign states.

The owner of the Vega has chosen to disregard that law, evidently believing that it is above such trifles. The owner has DELIBERATELY chosen to remain in a specific spot. It has DELIBERATELY chosen to break both sovereign and international law and it has DELIBERATELY chosen to put itself ‘In harm’s way’.

As it is obviously impossible to send-in Mr. Plod to remove this law breaker, (the NZ Police not being equipped with amphi-cars), the Prime Minister of the Sovereign State of New Zealand has no other choice BUT to use the Royal New Zealand Navy for the purpose of apprehending and removing this vessel. As such he is operating in complete accordance with New Zealand sovereign law, and in accordance with that of other sovereign states.

You evidently regard this course of action as a joke and perceive it to be an imposition of martial law in this country.

On that basis, therefore, and in the interests of informed and learned debate, I (and no-doubt others) would be interested in learning what alternative-option is available to a Prime Minister in this instance, and what your solution to this matter (the DELIBERATE breaking of both sovereign and international law) would be?

BTW: Notice that I have not used JK as the Prime Minister in this instance. As an individual, he is, in this instance irrelevant. We are talking here about a DELIBERATE challenge to a duly-constituted and internationally-recognised sovereign nation, and to the position of Prime Minister of that nation. The name of the person is not important, the position (and what it implies) is.

If 20-30 boats or more were causing a problem there would be a case for the authorities to act.

complete knee jerk from the govt who are clearly intimidated by the amount of protest onshore as well.

I do think this case as adding weight against a National win in 2014.

The New Zealand dollar is trading at five-year highs against the aussie as both countries’ central banks deliver opposite views on their economies and monetary policy.

The kiwi recently traded at A89.52 cents, after reaching a high of A89.88c last night. The New Zealand dollar has not traded at these levels since October 2008

Anadarko should cease drilling until the legal issues around their permission to drill are decided, the Green Party said today.

Greenpeace today filed papers asking for a Judicial Review of the process the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) followed when it gave Anadarko permission to drill off the coast of Raglan.

Spies worry over “doomsday” cache stashed by ex-NSA contractor Snowden –

British and U.S. intelligence officials say they are worried about a “doomsday” cache of highly classified, heavily encrypted material they believe former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden has stored on a data cloud.

The cache contains documents generated by the NSA and other agencies and includes names of U.S. and allied intelligence personnel, seven current and former U.S. officials and other sources briefed on the matter said.

One source described the cache of still unpublished material as Snowden’s “insurance policy” against arrest or physical harm.

“The worst is yet to come,” said one former U.S. official who follows the investigation closely.

Motorists will be under stricter controls this summer with the threshold for speeding reduced for the whole of the next two months.

From December 1 to January 31 police will have a tolerance of just 4km/h above the speed limit for all drivers, the Government says.

SO, as has been said, Iran really isn’t giving up a lot in this deal that is supposed to be so great.

The United States released $8 billion in frozen assets to Iran on Sunday in a move meant to ensure Tehran’s compliance with a nuclear pact signed over the weekend, according to top Iranian officials.

Iranian government spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht confirmed on Monday morning that the U.S. government had unfrozen $8 billion in assets that had been previously blocked by the Obama administration.

Additionally, Iran announced on Sunday that its nuclear work will continue despite the deal, which aimed to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and enrichment of uranium, the key component in a nuclear weapon.

Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif, who helped ink the deal, praised it for recognizing Iran’s right to enrich uranium, a key sticking point that had delayed the deal until Saturday evening.

“The [nuclear] program has been recognized and the Iranian people’s right to use the peaceful nuclear technology based on the NPT [Non-Proliferation Treaty] and as an inalienable right has been recognized and countries are necessitated not to create any obstacle on its way,” Zarif told reporters over the weekend.

“The program will continue, and all the sanctions and violations against the Iranian nation under the pretext of the nuclear program will be removed gradually,” he added.

Iran’s most well-known nuclear sites will remain operational under the deal, according to Zarif, who presented a very different version of the agreement than that described by the White House on Saturday.

Over the next six months, Iran will see “the full removal of all [United Nations] Security Council, unilateral and multilateral sanctions, while the country’s enrichment program will be maintained,” Zarif said.

The Fordo and Natanz nuclear sites will also continue to run, he said.

“None of the enrichment centers will be closed and Fordo and Natanz will continue their work and the Arak heavy water [nuclear reactor] program will continue in its present form and no material [enriched uranium stockpiles] will be taken out of the country and all the enriched materials will remain inside the country,” Zarif said. “The current sanctions will move towards decrease, no sanctions will be imposed and Iran’s financial resources will return.”

America recognized Iran’s right to enrich uranium up to 5 percent under the deal, according to both the Iranians and a White House brief on the deal.

By extension of your observation, (and to use an analogy, with which you may be familiar, but hopefully, not), the following example:

Your house is being burgled, and you call the Police, explaining the position.

Their reply?

Your reaction would not, perhaps, be polite, as you were, after-all expecting ‘protection’ in your situation.

The Government’s reaction is not a ‘…Complete knee jerk from the govt who are clearly intimidated by the amount of protest onshore as well’, rather it is a response to the actions of the Vega in(as already noted) DELIBERATELY breaking the law. Intimidation doesn’t enter into the equation. The ‘law’ may be an ass, BUT it is still the law.

And as for making an example of the ‘poor little Vega’ (my paraphrase).?

Consequences are the result of actions. Do good things, good things tend to happen. Do bad things, then bad things tend to happen.

The Vega is (as I said) DELIBERATELY breaking the law; this, as things currently stand in the New Zealand legal framework, is a ‘BAD’ thing. As I have already noted, BAD things tend to happen to those who do BAD things’.

Therefore, the Vega (actually its owners) should be punished, and, to make sure that they are, the law must become involved. The ‘law’ in this instance would be in the form of the Royal New Zealand Navy, ipso facto, an extension of the law operating within the Sovereign State of New Zealand.

From a strictly-legal aspect, there is really no choice available, irrespective of who holds the political power. The law has been passed by the elected-representatives of the sovereign state. Having been passed, it is now in effect. It must be enforced, and if it is NOT then what is the point? Discard one law, then one might as well discard them all, with the inevitable result that a downward slide starts…

Andy Pierce has won a chance to be the first New Zealand astronaut.

And all he did was buy some shower gel.

The North Auckland resident is one of two Kiwis heading to AXE Global Space Camp in Florida to undergo astronaut testing with a chance to fly into space on the new XCOR Lynx commercial reusable launch vehicle.

Pierce says he bought a bottle of Lynx shower gel, saw a competition on the wrapper and entered online.

“I got a phone call in June last year saying I had won. At first I thought it was somebody having a laugh. But the caller asked I send the receipt off with some forms.”

Organisers called again, validating his win.

One council, one mayor and one voice is the best way forward for Hawke’s Bay, according to the Local Government Commission.

Merging the region’s five councils into a single authority is the Commission’s preferred option for governing Hawke’s Bay, it announced today.

Creating one council could save the region up to $10 million a year, the proposal says.

A new Hawke’s Bay Council would replace Napier City, Wairoa, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay District Councils along with the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. It would also include a small area of Rangitikei District

Bank of Tokyo threatened Government

The Bank of Tokyo threatened the Government with bad publicity and warned of implications for foreign investment if it was forced to take a haircut over Solid Energy, the High Court has heard.

Solid Energy ran into financial difficulties last year, culminating in a creditors’ compromise in September where the terms of debt were reset and the company’s bankers agreed to acquire shares with a face value of $75 million, while the Crown would acquire $25m worth.

The Government’s plans to restructure Solid Energy have been challenged by the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in the High Court in Auckland.

Opening the case for Solid Energy, Alan Galbraith, QC, said that in a letter to Treasury the Bank of Tokyo had made threats, including bad publicity, if it were forced to wear losses from Solid Energy
