Tuanz’s Brislen has the floor on Stuff today lashing Chorus over it’s ultra-fast broadband problems.

TUANZ, despite standing for Telecommunications Users Assocation (NZ) is a supplier rather than a consumer group yet Brislen uses the words “the furthest thing from ‘what we want’ as users”.

Brislen shows his political colours when he says of Chorus “perhaps the government should buy the company” and of the cable laying:

…Rights of way, driveways, easements, multi-dwelling units, gated communities, new subdivisions, apartment blocks, business parks. All should be accessible by default. That would strip a huge amount of cost out of the business of deploying the UFB…

I wonder if Brislen will eventually show up on the Labour or Greens’ party list?

Further to MartinH’s 9.02 post about Cunliffe and forestry deaths.

As the MSM blitz on forestry deaths picks up, with blame about to be heaped on contractors and foresty companies generally, someone should look at what happened to industry safety in the period after private companies were (for a while) allowed to compete with ACC.

My understanding is some of the big companies of the day, like the then Carter Holt Harvey refused to deal with contractors who couldn’t get insurance coverage, and the insurers refused to provide cover to contractors with poor safety records. The result of this, I’m told was that safety numbers improved markedly and swiftly. Contractors with sloppy safety standards were driven out.

The Labour-Greens approach, however, would be for a thousand inspectors, sheafs of new standards, and more overhead for the forestry industry, probably just as export prices go into a downturn.

It must be disconcerting for America to see it’s two biggest creditors, China & Japan, not getting along. If not for their charity Obamas America would collapse over night.

They are not muslim, so I doubt Israel will direct Obama to start killing anyone and the whole thing will blow over after a period of chest beating. Also China and Japan lend America the Trillions and Trillions of dollars needed to wage war on countries that are unsympathetic to Israel, bail out Jewish financial institutions and donate billions yearly to Israel.

Reid, yes Israel is furious about the peaceful settlement of the Nuclear issue.

Expect a spontaneous “uprising of the people” in Iran real soon. When I say “the people” I really mean US backed imported muslim radicals who will raise the rabble in Iran and destroy the country, while providing the US with an excuse to take out key military installations. Mai Chen – attempting to polish this Auckland Supercity ‘turd’?

In my considered opinion, the Auckland ‘Supercity’ has been a success for the corporate 1% who really run the Auckland region, the hugely-powerful, unelected private lobby groups – the Committee for Auckland and NZ Property Council.

I have opposed this enforced amalgamation from day one, because, as predicted it has set up a bigger public trough, for bigger but fewer private snouts.

Bigger contracts for fewer but bigger private contractors.

How many contracts for services once provided in-house by directly-employed Council staff, under the ‘public service’ model, are now contracted to member companies of the Committee for Auckland (of which Auckland Council CEO Doug McKay is a member)?

Citizens and ratepayers, (whose rates have gone up every year under this ‘Supercity – super-ripoff’ model), don’t know who’s getting these thousands of private-sector contracts and consultancies, because transparency requirements arising from the Public Records Act 2005 and Local Government Act 2002 are not being followed.

I strongly recommend that Mai Chen checks these facts for herself, before promoting this disaster.

(At the ‘Auckland Conversations’ event on Wednesday 20 November 2013, I did directly and publicly raise this with Mai Chen, and asked her if she was aware of the following s.17 of the Public Records Act 2005:

17 Requirement to create and maintain records

(1) Every public office and local authority must create and maintain full and accurate records of its affairs, in accordance with normal, prudent business practice, including the records of any matter that is contracted out to an independent contractor.

I don’t think they’ll be able to use the same recipe on Iran Kea as they have used on Egypt and Syria, Iran is much more cohesive and well run, rebel forces would not find any shelter inside that country, it would be like Indonesians trying to explode bombs over here, nowhere to hide.

But it’s their formula, yes. There is an argument this agreement is a setup to fail, so that US/Israel finds an excuse to go in. I’m not sure I buy it, but it’s one argument.

Obama however is determined to screw the US and the military purge he’s undertaking right now is a sign he’s preparing for martial law. So between Obama and Israel, 99% of the US citizens aren’t going to have a good time, either way.

Reid, I really have no idea what is going on. But looking at the facts, the country who has gained most from Obama’s America is Israel. They have certainly benefited more that the Americans have.

I do not blame the Israelis for doing all they can to promote their interests. I blame Obama for not promoting Americas interests. Obama swore to serve America, not zionist aspirations. Ultimately this is not going to work for Israel either. War is not the solution.

I agree that Iran is no push over. They should lift the sanctions and resume open trade with Iran. That way everyone benefits economically from mutual prosperity. I see no reason Iran and Israel can not be mates. They have more common ground than difference. Don’t be fooled by the hype of the war mongers and those with hidden motives.

Pay top state bosses even more: report

No I’m not fooled, many are, but I’m not. Perhaps it’s the fluoridation that makes many incapable of seeing whose the warmonger and who isn’t.

I do not blame the Israelis for doing all they can to promote their interests.

One of the keys to understanding what’s going on is to realise the leadership of Israel are not acting in the best interest of their own country. They pretend they are and indeed most Israelis believe they are, but that’s because they’re sheeple just like Americans are. But that’s not the case, and once you see that and understand why, a lot of things fall into place.

EQC staff can help relatives privately

Earthquake Commission (EQC) staff in Christchurch are allowed to assist family members with their claims but only in their private capacity, EQC says.

The matter came to light this week when a claimant, who asked not to be named, told The Press about an EQC assessor attending numerous EQC visits to her (the assessor’s) elderly relative’s home, apparently while working. The staff member often had another person in the car with her.

“She seemed to know the EQC people who came to look at the units. Definitely,” the claimant said. It appeared more than coincidental, the claimant said, that assessors spent nearly two hours at the relative’s unit inspecting land damage in July and about 10 minutes on the other units in the block.

I agree and so do many Israelis and Jews.

But it does not fit with the msm narrative to report these things. They keep it black/white, good guys/bad guys, to save us the effort of thinking.

It used to be the “communists” now it is the “muslims”. I have been to the “communist” countries and are yet to meet one, outside of white middle class NZ.

There is an age-old enmity between Jew and Arab that is recorded in the Bible about Abraham and his two sons Isaac and Ishmael.
In the Bible, God tells Abraham that he shall be the father of many nations and that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars. Abraham’s wife, Sarah, is unable to have children though, and even though God tells Abraham that she will give birth, after a while they stop believing. So Sarah convinces Abraham to sleep with Hagar, a serving girl, and Ishmael is born from that union.

Later on Sarah and Abraham do indeed have a child of their own, Isaac, who is later renamed Israel.

As for Ishmael, the Bible says he will end up being “…a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him; and he will live to the east of all his brothers.” And he does go and live wild in the desert and is the father of the modern arabs (in the East). And there is constant enmity and jealously between them and Israel.

“for through Isaac shall your descendants be named. And I will make a nation of the son of the slave woman also, because he is your offspring.”

So Isaac and Ishmael and the fathers of these two peoples.

I understand the problem. They really needed a tick box for “This is a blatant abuse of taxpayer funding by a political party who has no respect for the current democratic process in New Zealand”. They are quite happy to throw my money away while they relitigate an election result. But when it comes to a real Citizens IR (the anti criminalising parents), they are quite happy to go with big brother knows best. Chilling look into the socialist/communist mindset.

IMHO The CIR is now a vote for the Greens or for National. I dont see it means anything else. If you support the Greens, vote No. If you dont support the Greens, vote Yes.

You can pick up a simple introduction text book at your nearest library. It will cover basic things like; what is a law, who makes law, how it is made, how to read and interpret it etc.

Do that one simple thing and you will know vastly more than any Freeman I have ever met.

Yeah, Israel should just get over the fact that the rockets that still come flying over their border with Gaza seem to be stamped with “Made in Iran”.

They should just ignore the statements by senior Iranian politicians that Israel should be wiped off the earth.

They should just ignore that Obama has given the world his “peace in our time” speech, without even a scred of paper to define what has been agreed. The Iranians are happy, they can continue with their nuclear ambitions.

I doubt things are as bad as you say anyway. Other wise all those Jews would not have left Europe, where they have prospered for centuries, to go live on a patch of desert.

The people of Israel are from EUROPE not some other place. If you want to dredge back through history to justify giving someone elses land to a particular religion, then you open up a can of worms, because we ALL came from the same place.

Z Energy contract drops third party

Listed petrol company Z Energy has finalised a contract with “more favourable terms” for the supply of 600 million litres of refined fuel from South Korea.

The company has been importing from the same South Korean refiner for 19 months, but the new contract will remove the need for a third party, creating “more favourable commercial terms than current arrangements”.

Chief executive Mike Bennetts said about 25 per cent of the company’s fuel was directly imported as refined petrol and diesel.

The rest was produced at New Zealand’s sole refinery at Marsden Point.

“As a standalone local company, we have built a level of expertise such that we are comfortable contracting directly for the supply of fuel from global suppliers and we are confident we are negotiating highly competitive prices.”

Watchdog KOs Orion price hike

Electricity lines company Orion may take on more debt than planned after its proposed price hikes were knocked back.

Yesterday the Commerce Commission released its final decision on the company’s request to raise prices next year by 15 per cent above inflation.

The commission cut that to 8.4 per cent, which will mean an extra $4.80 a month on the electricity bill of the average Christchurch household. Had the 15 per cent been allowed, that figure would have been $8.50 more.

All up, the ruling has slashed Orion’s proposed revenue increase by $116 million

That is a bit strong Kea. Many people converted to Christianity because they thought it sounded good and it spread through Europe and UK as the Romans built roads which made travel from the ME to those places more accessible.

Sure, some pagans were forcibly converted but mostly, unlike Islam, it was a choice.

And I readily admit there were instances where Christianity did itself no favours, both in Europe and South America. But the Romans did not forcibly convert all pagans – in the end, pagans probably thought it would be best for them just to join the in-crowd.

But the major problem today is that Islam is still aggressively pursuing its 7th century aims whilst Christianity merely enjoins one to believe in Christ and we do not slaughter others merely for being non-Christian. When I saw we, I do not include myself, I left all that behind me when I departed the shores of Ulster as a young woman.

Also, when QE1 kicked out the Catholics the roads were opened for the Great Reformation that spurned the Wesley’s, Whitfield and the Methodists which in turn made possible the Great Enlightenment in the American colonies.

OneTrack, I’d tick that third box.

I support the majority of the Nats policy positions, both fiscal and social… and have voted blue for at least the last 3 general elections. I don’t agree with the asset sales position purely from a return on investment perspective – not ideology.

My position is that the taxpayer would receive better dividend yields by retaining the assets than they will save by the reduction in sovereign debt. Essentially I’m looking for the best way to say “this referendum is retarded, as the majority of assets have already been sold and is a big waste of time and money purely for the purpose of political posturing.” A blank or spoiled ballot seems the best way to do that in my mind.

Paul – i can understand islanders jumping ship to either aussie or nz. Hayne played for Fiji at the last world cup is an example..

but jumping between the majors.. also the timing of when JT jumped. we were world champs. he could have been a corner stone of the kiwis for a decade.

was never a fan of fein playing for us. or webb. convenient but not right.

like the maori playing for the england league side. WTF

mehrtens..it was Greg Davis,the wallaby capt-he came back to NZ to die of cancer. Tony Shaw was born in Bris..and don’t forget Des Connor.
And since on principle I refuse to go digital, I won’t be watching the game. Last time the Kiwis won a series in Aussie was 1947 or 49. Aussie league dictates the game here.There should be more than a one off game per year. I still remember the day the Kiwis lost 50 odd to nil. Disgraceful.

So big surprise. NCEA sucks, according to the people who see the students immediately after they’ve “passed.”

Universities say high school students are coming to them under-prepared and with a poor work ethic – and they blame the NCEA system.

A confidential report by the Tertiary Education Commission reveals a high level of concern in engineering departments at universities and polytechnics about the quality of math and science education many students are receiving…

One submission to the TEC from Victoria University and Wellington Institute of Technology said students who received merit or excellence NCEA grades generally coped well with tertiary study. But most who got an “achieved” grade did not, and many would’ve had a “fail” grade under the old system.

The report’s findings have hit a nerve with some educators, who say students today are the hardest working they have been and NCEA has proven itself as a solid system.

Secondary Principals’ Association New Zealand president Tom Parsons said the assessment system used widely in schools was the best the country has had in years, compared to past exam systems such as School Certificate, Sixth Form Certificate and University Entrance.

“I can tell you that the old system was not as good as NCEA,” he said. “What’s happening now is that there’s a big move to make sure there are no students leaving high school with no qualifications.

“Students today work harder. They are assessed throughout the year and there is more pressure on students than ever before. For institutions to turn around and say that NCEA is not creating good work ethic is stupid.”

The Law Schools were complaining a few years ago their students couldn’t string a sentence together now we have the engineering people saying maths is a problem but the teachers deny it because their focus is on not making people fail, rather than properly educating those with 3-digit IQs. You get what you focus on and precisely as expected and predicted, the almost total focus on providing complete wrap-around for dummies results in not much attention paid to those who need the higher end skills because that’s where their minds are at. But no. They’re not the losers in life with heaps of “special needs” so they don’t get any attention, at all.

But will teachers recognise reality, or will they pretend it doesn’t exist?

Tertiary providers’ concerns might have more to do with the curriculum than the way students were assessed under the NCEA system, he said.

“The way NCEA is assessed is obviously different from Bursary. If they aren’t prepared and coming in without the right knowledge …

“NCEA is assessment, it’s not curriculum. It assess the curriculum. So if it’s a curriculum problem – that they’re not learning the right stuff – then the question is has the curriculum changed and is that the problem?”

Gee, has the curriculum forgotten to include calculus? No? Then it’s not the curriculum, is it.

I agree with your summary, except would like to make one point. A person cannot be forcibly converted to Christianity (in essence). It requires the belief in God – whilst a person can be forced to adhere to Christian principles and behaviours etc, I don’t think a person can be forced to believe in something, they do not.

jcuk – I think Cloudflare is some sort of caching system The Standard uses, occasionally when the host goes down cached pages are served instead. It doesn’t work very well. If you do a search at TS on it you will find lprent going on about it. TS seems to be highly custiomised and tweaked by a technofiddler, increasing the chances of problems.

Having said that both The Standard and Kiwiblog had problems yesterday with comments dropping into moderation, perhaps there’s a wider WordPress or Akismet (spam catcher) problem.

Talking about TS a few there are going mental over the Herald editorial taking the Green abuse of CIR to task.
