Internet hero just trying to make world a greyer place

By night he is a harmless and mild-mannered man, but by day he takes on a new persona.

A hero to many, Pete George patrols the nation’s blogsites, stifling any hint of strongly held opinion by laying down a solid suppressing fire of derailing comments.

His tireless efforts in front of his computer have earned George the sobriquet The Beige Badger, as well as the gratitude of dozens of grey-haired, cardigan-wearing blog readers.

To many people Pete George is a genuine superhero, keeping New Zealand’s blogsites focused on nothing much in particular.

But George plays down any suggestion that he is a hero.

“I’m just trying to stick up for the ordinary grey man,” he said.

“There’s too much noise out there on the internet, and people need to take a deep breath, calm down, and do nothing.

“I’m just out there doing what any man approaching old age and living a life of complacent and unexamined comfort would be doing, had he endless hours to while away reading blogsites.”

George is famous for his ability to snuff out leftist conspiracies.

Only a few days ago he exposed an ugly plot by left-wing bloggers to launch a concerted attack on all fronts on the nation’s farmers.

One of the bloggers behind the plot, Scott Yorke, said George had put an end to his plans in no time.

“We had all agreed during our weekly left-wing conspiracy meeting to launch simultaneous blog attacks on the hard-working and honest farming community. Martyn and I had the whole thing planned.

“But we had barely fired off a couple of blogposts before the Beige Badger flew in and put a stop to everything.

“A thousand curses upon the Beige Badger!” yelled Mr Yorke. “I will have my revenge!”

But like all heroes, Pete George has a weakness. Superman had Kryptonite, and Pete George has The Standard.

One mention of the popular leftist blogsite is enough to send the Dunedin man into an almost incontrollable frenzy, followed usually by a fainting fit.

“That blog,” hisses George. “Please, don’t talk about that blog. Do you know they banned me? Why would they do that? What are they afraid of? Why are the left in this country so afraid of contrary opinions? It’s censorship! CENSORSHIP!”

George begins to rail angrily against Lynn Prentice, and his eyes soon begin to roll. Within a few minutes he has passed out.

But the Beige Badger is not inactive for very long. His comment-posting capacity is legendary, even if most of those comments are instantly forgettable.

Some social media experts speculate that when future generations look back on the blogosphere and the reasons for its demise, they will find millions of Pete George comments and conclude that it died of boredom.

However, the Beige Badger is not put off by such predictions.

“I have a duty to sterilise all online political discourse in this country,” said George.

“When people stop caring, stop believing, and stop trying, the grey men will have won. And what a glorious day that will be.”

That’s false. I emailed DPF and this is exactly what I said – “I have to deal with a lot of abuse on Kiwiblog and just deal with it. Kea is often over the top with different people – but this time I think he’s well over the line..

His strong point is narking. Lamentable example from the male-hater Virgin from Dunedin.

Kea, your personal preferences may be clouding judgement. A small number of people using KB think it’s their playground to use and abuse as they like. But the wider reputation of KB and of DPF are not the richer for it – DPF gets the blame for a lot of the crappy behaviour that passes as “all good fun” here. I’ve seen many people elsewhere saying they won’t comment here because of the bullying culture that some try to protect – by attacking anyone who calls them on it.

If you don’t like being called on the worst of your behaviour by DPF then cry to him, not to me.

Beryl’s little tanty started when I politely asked him to eat shit and die. I think it was for trying to claim FE Smith was some kind of Gordon Gekko type corproate fraudster for accepting legal aid work at probably a quarter of the rate he could charge an actual client.

Gimp, thanks for confirming my central point. In spite of women being shown as more violent in a variety of studies, they are convicted less than men. As you say, police stats confirm the institutionalised misandry we have in NZ.

I can then apply a time filter: “site:www.kiwiblog.co.nz/[year]/[month] [search string]” to look for that search string at a particular point in time.

Hilarious. Apply Occam’s Razor you dolt.

The reason more men are apprehended, prosecuted, and convicted for violent offences is because men commit more violent offences than women.

As an easy example – murder is the most heinous act of violence and is therefore investigated thoroughly by the Police. What proportion of murders in NZ were committed by men in 2012? The answer can easily be found via Google.

The guy is a deluded misogynist and apartheid sympathiser who lives only to convince everyone else there is a whole bevvy of woman reading every comment over his shoulder while whispering sweet platitudes of agreement into his ears. My 6 week old daughter is better conversation and all she does is shit her pants.

A waste of time and comment space. I have never seen anyone so convinced of their own righteousness outside of Bomber Bradbury.

Kea is an awful person, though not stupid, and his myopia is so dense he probably emits a little Hawking Radiation with every comment.

I think they have that wrong in the article. Our old police one was 2- 1 and we used to laugh at what the Judges and the MPs got. MP’s certainly got more than your average rozzer, a lot more than .50 cents

There seems to be a presumption that male violence is only directed at women. Perhaps men are more noted in the violence stats as they are also more likely to be violent to other men, do the stats break the violence down to victim gender? Surely they do.

MPs also putting hand out for KiwiSaver bonuses.

When National list MP Mark Blumsky leaves parliament next year after just three years, the 50-year-old is expected to walk away with $100,000 in parliamentary superannuation to ease him back into civilian life.

And an MP like Labour’s Marian Hobbs, leaving after 12 years, could net a lump sum of $360,000, according to calculations supplied to the Sunday Star-Times.

Fifteen years after MPs closed their lavish and much-criticised superannuation scheme to new entrants, the replacement for newer MPs is proving to be just as generous.

The super payouts don’t end there. A number of MPs, including Blumsky, are also putting out their hand for KiwiSaver, netting them another $1040 a year from the taxpayer, plus the $1000 start up gift from the government.

Engineers’ Union national secretary Andrew Little said employee…

I wonder if Little is now giving his away to the workers

Just reread that section of the Evidence Act more carefully. Even if on appeal it was held that a blogger was a journalist, and there are several bloggers who are journalists of one form or another – the section allows a High Court Judge to order the disclosure of the source. In this case because the plaintiff is looking for malicious intent. So is the real question the alleged ‘intent’ or whether a blogger is simply ‘reporting’ the news – a fairly important question.

Then there’s this one from PEB ‘The Judge has erred on this one, the Court can’t have it both ways, either he’s a news outlet or he’s not. If he’s not his nine convictions get the arse if he is this defamation wank gets the arse’ But isn’t it the case that despite being a ‘reporter’ or not, a Court order cannot be broken, appealed but not broken.

My comment was made because at the time the DC said Whale Oil was a legitimate (sic) media outlet and nailed him. Now the Courts saying hes not legimate media , so make up your mind please. I know the orders apply to publication that’s why DPF nailed me because I mentioned an ex footballer who I didn’t realise was the subject of a suppression order. Without reading the exact law bits, you can’t stop people talking about things. So if blogs aren’t media outlets we should be able to “talk” amongst ourselves to no ones detriment.

But if DPF considers himself a legitimate media outlet one can assume the Whale does to and that’s why he gets a bit tense when we name people who are suppressed by the Court

Good point Paul. I think the debate on the suppression orders relates to ‘publishing’ being distinct from a ‘media outlet.’ I don’t think DPF considers his blog to be a media outlet and therefore himself a member of the press. Whereas Slater’s position is the reverse. I was pointing out that it looks like that a High Court Judge can order details of a source to be revealed by a person (or organisation – I’d have to read it again) whether they’re a member of the press or not.
