Then he went to our local police, with burns, looking for medical assistance and they beat him. Because using a tractor is Haram in that province.

As I enjoy my twilight years, I am often struck by the inevitability that the party must end.

There will be a clear, cold morning when there isn’t any “more.”

No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat.

Jcuk. 90percent of to days medicines were invented by publicly owned companies not government institutions. NZ has a 16 year patent on medicines. The rest of the civilised world has 20 years. It takes 12 years from the time of discovery to the time of first sale. Pharmacy waits till medicines are off patent then buys copy medicines from India, east Europe and China. Nobody has any idea what’s in the products because nobody in NZ checks them. In some cases the contents are half the stated amount.
Pharmac buys few modern medicines resulting in greater illness and increased hospitalizations. Pharmac is not doing you any favours and is bulging off the goodwill of the rest of the civilised world.
P.S. do we ask the Chinese warships in NZ if they have nuclear weapons on board, do we check?

Thinking about the Jacinda Adern “appointment” as deputy leader of the Labour party. The more I do think about it the more it reminds me of the cluster fuck that was Sarah Palin.

It smacks of a desperate attempt to pander to a particular voting demographic without really considering the possible fallout across the total voting demographic.

Whatever the reason, I see the “appointment” of Adren as deputy leader as a much of a mistake as the naming of Sarah Palin as vice presidential running mate.

UK proposes harsher sentences for internet abuse
A proposed change in the law, to be debated in the House of Lords this week, would allow for sentences of up to two years for anyone sending abusive comments over the internet.
The UK Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has proposed quadrupling the legal punishments available to those found guilty of committing abuse over the internet, extending the maximum sentence to two years’ imprisonment.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Grayling detailed changes to the current legislation that would see cases of abuse carried out over the internet – including making abusive comments over social networking services like Facebook or Twitter – carry a sentence of up to two years’ imprisonment, up from six months at present. ‘These internet trolls are cowards who are poisoning our national life,’ the Justice Secretary told the paper. ‘No-one would permit such venom in person, so there should be no place for it on social media.’

The move appears to have been prompted, at least in part, by the case of model Chloe Madeley, daughter of TV couple Richard and Judy, against whom various threats – up to and including bodily harm and rape – have been made by Twitter users displeased at her speaking out in defence of comments made by her mother regarding footballer Ched Evans’ soon-to-be-spent conviction for rape and his suitability to return to his profession and place in the public eye.

The new legislation would see threatening, abusive or sexually offensive comments made against a person over the internet available for referral to the Crown Court for up to a 24 month sentence. Currently, such comments are prosecuted under the Malicious Communications Act, which provides magistrates with a maximum sentence of six months for offenders found guilty.

Madeley herself has supported the move, telling the BBC that, while she supports freedom of speech, ‘threats of any kind must not be interpreted as freedom of speech. Threatening to harm others is extreme and crosses the line of personal opinion into criminal behaviour. I am pleased the government are now talking about ways to deter trolls, and quadrupling the sentencing is a good place to start.’

The proposed law will also include an amendment to current law to better address so-called ‘revenge pornography’ – the public posting of privately-provided nude or pornographic images by jilted exes – with an equal two-year sentence. Both sections of the law would apply in England and Wales only, as amendments to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill. The House of Lords is to debate the bill later this week.

Harakiri is an act of killing oneself (albeit an extremely rare and much-romanticized one) but it is not really suicide in the Western sense. It is a socio-political act designed to give a disgraced or condemned man a way to preserve their honour (and by extension, the honour of their family members) in Japanese society–although this kind of society doesn’t really exist any more, except in Hollywood.

No one really does that anymore. It has gone out of favor since the famous wingnut Yukio Mishima pulled it off in 1970. Kind of ruined the genre, if you know what I mean.

I’m sure that most of you have seen, at one time or another, various commentators here make reference to “studies” that portray Republican voters as utter morons who get their information from Fox News.

I thought it might be fun to refer to the Pew Survey’s recent study: What do Americans Know. The table I’m looking at is titled Modest Partisan Differences in News Knowledge.

I like the use of the word “Modest” (chuckle). If it bent the other way they’d be screaming it from the rooftops. What it shows is that your average GOP voter is simply more informed about most things that are going on in the world than your average Democrat voter.

Then there’s this article from the WaPo: Republicans advertise on ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ Democrats buy ads on ‘Big Brother.’.

I used to post as “snoop” and “Kathy Maddren” (amongst other names) on the Whale. I was recently banned from there, becos of a comment I wrote about Judith Collins. I used no swear words, and it was about wether Jude would start up her own Blue Green Nabour Party if her name was not cleared by the enquiry. Slater and his Mods have become really paranoid over the past few months, and they only have themselves to blame for the decline in comments. Things are so bad, that Cam and Pete and Travis have had to plump up the numbers by writing heaps of comments. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services plans to seek a vendor to produce as many as 34 million blank work permits and ‘green cards’ – the paperwork that authorizes illegal immigrants to live and work in the United States – as the White House prepares to issue an executive order after the Nov. 4 midterm elections.
According to a draft solicitation published online, the government agency will look for a company that can produce a minimum 4 million cards per year for five years, and 9 million in the early stages.
President Barack Obama has pledged that he will make a move on immigration reform this year. His original timetable called for a decision by the end of the summer.
Republicans have decried the plan as an ‘amnesty’ for millions of illegal immigrants, including hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors who have come across the U.S.-Mexico border this year.

It’s so boring here that I actually toddled over to Chris Trotter’s blog to comment on his link to an emotive video of a 92 year old Labour voter appealing for the British NHS to be preserved in vintage 1947 amber. You can read the comment thread here: What A Real Labour Party Member Sounds Like.

The good news is that by this point in the thread Chris has upgraded me from being an uncaring, superficial, mendacious, disingenuous, ignorant, smug, one-eyed white guy who doesn’t care about Blacks and Hispanics – to a “geek”.

And since he’s chosen not to publish the first third of my last comment, I’ll do so here:

Tom’s figures are a little disingenuous. We don’t know for instance if they are before after Obamacare. And the devil may be in the detail 2 – for instance “treated”…

I did not say “treated” in relation to cancer for precisely that reason, I talked about the five year survival rate, which is a standard measure of success in oncology.

Tom has tossed some unattributed and decontextualized figures into a comment ..

Well allow me to attribute them then: the data is from Lancet Oconlogy, August 2008. Knock yourself out. NZ’s not there.

As it happens the US data is broken down by state, in some cases by city, and you should note that Detroit – an overwhelmingly “Black” city, has a five year survival rate for Male Prostate cancer of 93.4%. You should also take a look at the Black vs. White breakdowns further on in the study, where it’s apparent that even in the heart of racist, profit-driven America, a Black man has a vastly better chance of surviving cancer than any male in the NHS.

And what can one say about your notion that US hospitals treat uninsured people for free out of fear of being sued – other than it reveals you to be every bit as one-eyed as Tom.

One can say that by comparison in the NHS you cannot sue but merely file complaints and hope to god that those, plus reports, might make a difference. The evidence to date is that they have not. In any case the US hospitals don’t do it out of a fear of being sued but because it was written into law decades ago, just like Britain.

Yes, Kea. Putin a “leading light” who might soon not have to worry about such pesky things as elections. Looks like there is a testing of the waters in that direction in Russia right now: Zhirinovsky Calls for Ending Direct Election of Russian President

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the frequently outrageous leader of the wildly misnamed Liberal Democratic Party of Russia who nonetheless often serves as a bellwether of Russian politics, says that Russia should dispense with direct elections for the Russian presidency because “the democratic costume is too tight for Russia.”

In remarks to the Second Youth Legislative Forum at the Russian Academy of Economics and State Service, the LDPR leader said that there is no need for direct election of the Russian president. Instead, he can be chosen “with the help of electors from all the territories” just as the Moscow patriarch is.

… Anatoly Baranov, the editor of the FORUM.MSK portal, says that Russia needs “a committee for the defense of the republic” because some like Zhirinovsky are drifting so far in the direction of monarchism.

That trend, he suggested could “end with some kind of theocracy, when the chief of state will not only retain civil power for his lifetime but will be converted into ‘a living god.’” And Baranov cites Boris Nemtsov’s recent report that Putin and his aides have been complaining about acts they view as an affront to his “highness.”

Hmmm, is Putin trying to be the new Augustus?

It’s not absurd. I’ve read a few things over the last several months that indicate the invasion of Ukraine has been planned from at least 2008, not the least being Putin’s remarks to George W. Bush that Ukraine is not a real country.

At the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania, Vladimir Putin told a surprised George W. Bush, “You have to understand, George, that Ukraine is not even a country. Part of its territory is in Eastern Europe and the greater part was given to us.”

Russia has – by mutual agreement – a major military installation in the Crimea.

Why ?

Because when it was built the Crimea was in Russia. The Politburo made Crimea ADMINISTRATIVELY part of Ukraine. When the USSR collapsed they had a huge military base in another country !

The existence of Russian troops in the Crimea was then portrayed by the Western media as an “invasion”, following Obama’s sponsoring of the neo nazi far right radicals in Ukraine and the democratic referendum of the people, stating they wanted to be a federation of Russia.

TV interviews are now not interviews but discussions, with the presenter informing the interviewee of their interpretation, apparently knowing as much about the topic as the expert.

Someone mentioned TVNZ news early in the thread. Who actually watches it right through each evening? I rarely look at either OneNews and 3news. If I do I always give up after 10 minutes. Also cannot stand Seven Sharp at all, and ditto for Campbell Live.

None of these are news they’re infotainment afaik.

It doesn’t work that way. The harder they try to make it for “white hegemony,” the more robust and efficient it will become.

The way to destroy this construct is through funding “white hegemony,” promoting it, giving welfare to it, making it more dependant upon the state, making it so that it’s never “”white hegemony’s fault,” etc. Do that, and it will rot upon the vine in a couple of generations.
