At last some perspective from the other side..

Sutton’s employment lawyer, Penny Swarbrick, said his settlement did not contain a golden parachute or a severance payment. He was getting the standard entitlements under his employment agreement including holiday pay, superannuation and salary until January 31.

He would work for acting chief executive John Ombler.

Sutton only spoke to the media in the first place because material about the investigation had been leaked.

Swarbrick also said she and her client knew of only one complainant and one complaint.

If others wanted to make complaints, a process was available.

A senior Cera staff member, who asked not to be named for fear of losing their job, said last Monday’s resignation announcement was a shock for most staff.

People had been in tears and emotional, the staff member said.

Andrew Little will announce his new Labour lineup this morning but some details are reported to have been leaked from the Labour sieve.

Annette King deputy leader
Grant Robertson finance
David Cunliffe not on the front bench
David Parker with a the role that would “meet his expectations”.

No word on Ardern or Mahuta.

This lineup will be for a year and then reviewed. Little has to establish himself first, then assert himself leading into the next election.

I’d like to encourage all very poor people to eat at Laila Harre’s restaurant and then either leave without paying, or leave with payment in kind – a hand woven flax kite bag or a collection of interesting shells would be appropriate.

In the interests of walking one’s talk, surely that would be acceptable to Ms Harre? After all, everybody must do their part to combat this extreme poverty and hardship in society which sees thousands of children dying on our streets every day.

If we are to give up our luxurious 4 bedroom homes because we only have two kids, then surely the benefactor of a fortune such as hers would make a similar contribution? It’s only fair

I think Ian Rennie is being let off far too lightly. There is a perception reinforced by the way the Sutton complainant was trivialised by Rennie at that press conference that women are not treated fairly in the public service. The old rules apply that it is a white straight mens club. It was not helped by the presence of Andrew Kibblewhite (the Head of DPM + C) at the press conference. I have heard that women in the public service after 5 years are 18% lower paid than men The more I think about that press conference the more angry I get. I think Rennie’s attitudes towards women need to be looked into to see whether he is giving them a fair go. I suspect he does not. On this issue I think Andrew Little is correct that Rennie should be stood down pending an investigation into Rennie’s hiring practices and attitudes towards women and other minorities.

Yes she is. I cannot remember the name of the restaurant but I did make a comment yesterday suggesting that all Kiwibloggers (in the spirit of the left wing hate blogs) boycott her restaurant. I know that I will not give her one red cent of my money.

I do however like the idea of the poor eating there and then leaving without paying the bill.

Lance I do think the old power structure is alive and well in the public service. It may have softened at the edges but the old club mentality still prevails. I am not a public servant and do not intend to be thank god.

It never ceases to amaze me the number od people who demand the sacking of Rennie but who, if the roles were reversed, would be screaming blue bloody murder if some outsider was demanding their immediate sacking without any form of investigation, without any form of representation or input and without taking into account other relevant circumstances.

It seems a pity that LOUP (Leader of the Union Party) has no real understanding of the Employment Relations Act, the good faith provisions of the Act or the political conventions that preclude political leaders picking on civil servants knowing that they are not in a position to respond.

Both Labour, National and their hangers-on have a lot to fucking answer for. No more immigration from these sub-cultures.

A sensible post (thanks), and a reminder that the inquiry DID NOT RECOMMEND dismissal. But the vigilante , PC, surrogate mob will never face the reality that the only conclusion that can be drawn from the procedure followed by Rennie is that he did not have a proven case, and ergo, could do nothing more without exposing SSC/CERA to Sutton’s probable lawsuit(s?).

All the talk of confidentiality is BS. As J Key keeps saying, it was always going to become public. In the circumstances, “confidentiality” would have served only to crucify a person who had already seen his career destroyed – as has happened via subsequent anonymous media claims and the pejorative advocacy of obvious surrogates.

Meh. Nine lawyers, ten opinions, but when they are speaking publicly on behalf of their client they are about as objective a source of information and opinion as a union official during a strike.

But then Sutton has already had his PR consultant of a wife (who according to her wasn’t acting as a PR person at the time – yeah right!) wade in as well.

BTW – did I mention PR consultants are probably on about the same level as lawyers, just below cockroaches in a situation like this? Who do you think originally created the sort of situation where this sort of public non-information can occur in the first place?

And it had nothing to do with the fact that he was such a high profile person with such a large level of remuneration via the public purse who was having to resign in such hurried circumstances?! Yeah, only a lawyer could spin it otherwise. You get paid the big bucks, you accept extra responsibility, profile and public scrutiny…including when you resign in abrupt circumstances. Just ask Ian Rennie. I don’t make the rules – I just report them.

What gets me is that no-one catches this on their cell phone or tablet. All it would take it putting it on youtube, and you’d have john campbell or his feckless stand-in around at the door of the harassers, and we’d be hearing about it for weeks tabloid style.

The man was in a position of authority in the public sector and should have know better.
Serous misconduct was the finding. Serous misconduct not over friendly or misunderstood.
Yet he down played it into some form of over friendly misunderstanding at the press briefing.
frottaging filth was allowed to fall on his sword to salvage some honor.
That when falling on his sword he continued to act dishonorably says he should not have had the option.

You weren’t directing your post at me, but I’ll wade in. The lawyer in question is talking crap. Of course this was always going to go public, probably as a whispering campaign. Just ask the high profile New Zealander who has name suppression, whom David Cunliffe was photographed with. You can’t control human nature in such circumstances.

All of which overlooks the fact you have no basis to the assertion Rennie has subsequently made up the claims that

1. Sutton had engaged in serious misconduct, and

2. Rennie expected him to resign.

So Sutton had two legitimate choices – either resign and say nothing and lump the gossip campaign (as the high profile person in Central Otago is having to do), or make a brief public announcement, with no spin or attempts to mitigate and attempt damage control.

Instead, he used his wife’s PR skills…which re-opened the whole can of worms again.

Yes dime I have had female friends were that sort of joke was acceptable. In private firms I have seen far more erotic behavior between consenting adults.
I would not find it acceptable for a senor manager in a large public sector organization to behave in such a manor towards staff

Likely because the worst of the accusations could never be proved beyond reasonable doubt. Which the lawyers will cling to like a threadbare cloak, overlooking the fact that…

…Sutton’s success in the role was largely dependent on the goodwill of the public. As such it was unprofessional to place himself in a situation where the vital work of CERA was compromised by his stupidity.

That is why Rennie expected him to resign.

Chief executives, like politicians are dependent upon public goodwill to achieve their job and are thus judged by different standards and rightly so. Not in court (although John Banks may think otherwise, probably with good reason), but most certainly in the court of public opinion. If they cannot competently manage that aspect of their job, then they have to go…

Alasdair Thompson the former head of the EMA is another example. His failure to properly manage a situation around his comments and actions meant the EMA had damaged goods on their hands that they had to jettison for their public goodwill. Sounds cruel, but that is why these people are paid the handsome sums that come their way. Is part of the territory they inhabit, and the risk they willingly take on.

I don’t make the rules. I just report them.

Andrew Little’s statement is being misrepresented .

Calling for Rennie to be ‘stood down’ pending an investigation is NOT the same as calling for him to be sacked / dismissed.

How about paying closer attention to what EXACTLY has been said and reporting it correctly?

I’m no conspiracy theorist, but when reading the media reporting of the “hate crime” (don’t you love that Orwellian term) of the Muslims men against a 4 y/o Jewish boy, my mind can’t help but thinking that everything Pike wrote in his letter to Mazzini in 1871 is coming true.

After correctly predicting the causes of the first 2 world wars, Pike states that the 3rd World War will be fought between the Christian and Islamic World.

Obviously the “Jewish conspiracy” does not exist.

How else do you explain how a State led by a long-serving Jewish prime minister continues to allow the immigration of cultures with hard-wired anti-Jewish sentiments. If there was such a “Jewish conspiracy,” you would expect immigration levels from that particularly anti-Jewish quarter to have mysteriously dwindled following the demise of the Labour administration some years ago.

My two main objections to the promotion of conspiracy theories are:

1) The knowledge that a large enough body of men to mount an effective conspiracy couldn’t keep it a secret for long.
2) The way conspiracy theories are used as a crutch for personal failure, eg. “It’s not my fault! It’s all them stinkin’ xxxx that are controlling the yyyy system so that honest zzzz like myself don’t get a fair go.”

Also, if THEY really do control the show, then how come such bad things happen to clearly identifiable members of THEIR group all the time?

In biological systems, the more dangerous organisms (the ones to keep an eye on) are those whose populations rapidly increase and who take over and dominate the habitats into which they are introduced. On the contrary, those organisms whose populations are small and static over time generally don’t pose a threat to the other organisms in their ecosystem. It’s the game-changers that you have to watch out for.

“He had everybody fooled,” said Scotti in an exclusive interview with the Daily News. “Nobody suspected.”

Scotti came forward last week with his insider’s look at Cosby’s womanizing ways during the magical 1984-92 run of “The Cosby Show.”

The 90-year-old Scotti said he decided to speak as the drumbeat of sexual abuse allegations against Cosby, 77, grew steadily louder. “I felt sorry for the women,” he told The News.

The Emmy-winning Cosby, NBC’s most bankable star at the time, used Scotti to deliver monthly payouts to eight different women in 1989-90 — including Shawn Thompson, whose daughter Autumn Jackson claimed the actor was her dad.

Cosby, while denying paternity, paid out more than $100,000 to Thompson over the years after their 1974 affair began. Scotti told The News that he believes Cosby was sleeping with all the women who received money.

“I was suspicious that something was going on,” said Scotti. “I suspected that he was having sex with them because the other person he was sending money to (Thompson) he was definitely having sex with.

“Why else would he be sending money?” Scotti asked. “He was sending these women $2,000 a month. What else could I think?”

I find it amusing how people like Grief or Stephie think using the term “conspiracy theorist” is some kind of insult or smear. Funny that they actually think that in all walks of life there aren’t groups of people working toward common goals.

They are the type of person who think that the assassinations of JFK, Abraham Lincoln and the attempted hit on Andrew Jackson were all just “lone gunman” nuts ditto for MLK & Bobby Kennedy.

The type of person who thinks concrete buildings can collapse due to fire when the source of that fire is not chemically capable of reaching the temperatures high enough to sufficiently damage the concrete for it to occur.

The type of person who thinks a hole in a building vastly too small for what is said to have hit it is nothing to question nor the fact the amateur untrained pilot said to have hit the building performed a manoeuvre so advanced that experienced captains in the same aircraft type could not do it. Oh and plus the small matter of all CCTV in the vicinity of the incident has all been confiscated by government. Move along nothing to see here……not even mentioned building seven!

No it isn’t Penny. Expressions such as “unfit for the job” and “should be dumped” do not amount to calls “to be stood down pending an investigation”. Yesterday, the reports quoted Little as calling for him to be sacked. Now that his brain (or as least his press secretary’s brain) has caught up with his lip, he is modifying his position.

Steve Hansen deserves a contract extension past the next World Cup – his three years in charge of the All Blacks is so impressive that the New Zealand Rugby Union is bang on the mark in opening discussions with the burly coach. Indeed, a contract to the end of 2016 is stingy, considering the exceptional coach he has become.

Such an extraordinary vote of confidence should have nothing to do with the alleged formula-of-faith that won the Webb Ellis Cup in 2011. Indeed, the post 2007 World Cup retention of the Graham Henry regime – which included Hansen – came perilously close to backfiring as the All Blacks struggled in the 2011 tournament and faded in the final.

Formulas are a load of codswallop for coaching appointments anyway. Every situation is unique and down to judging the people involved. World sport is full of coaches who came up trumps at one club, and failed at another.

I’m among the Hansen doubters who have had to eat my words. He has emerged as a rare breed, possessing every quality in the book. Indeed, if he wants the job, and can cope with the pressure, Hansen may be a groundbreaker who lasts distances unimaginable until now.

There are potential challengers led by Dave Rennie, Vern Cotter and Joe Schmidt, but Hansen has turned them into remote ones. New Zealand rugby appears to have found a man who could be reappointed ad infinitum.

1 His record is so good, and his experience so vast, that it would be a crime to throw it away, and would take a newcomer an age to emulate. Running such a massive operation so successfully, while coping with the pressure, is no mean task. Hansen exudes an inner confidence and strength.

2 He gets on with his CEO, to put it mildly. The All Blacks are basically a club in their own right these days, and the partnership between head coach and chief executive is pivotal to professional sporting success. Hansen and Steve Tew might be brothers from a different mother.

3 Hansen can operate as both a trusted friend and tough boss with the players – he is straight to a clear point, gives people a fair chance, but acts when necessary. People know where they stand, even if they don’t like where they stand. This gets the best out of people. With a top character like Ian Foster alongside and veteran players of the same ilk, there is no manipulative rubbish.

4 His teams fight to the death. This is a hallmark of great coaches, a prime example being in football with Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United.

5 There are dangerous waters to navigate for New Zealand rugby, particularly the pull of overseas money. No doubt Hansen and Tew will always be learning in this but knowing who to keep and how to keep them is priceless.

6 The man sure learns. A criticism of the Henry regime was that it appeared, at times, to be a confused committee. The All Blacks, under Hansen, come across as collaborative, but with one man in clear command. Hansen, once disliked by many in the media, has won the media over. He worked out that if you give a little – on and off the record – you get a lot back. Whether this is a good thing is subjective, but shows how Hansen adjusts.

7 Selections are almost always on the mark – failing special projects are in short supply.

8 He makes big, clear-headed calls – such as trying to lure Wayne Smith back for the World Cup campaign.

9 Hansen has won the public over with a gruff-uncle-with-the-dry-sense-of-humour routine. Winning helps of course. This popularity eases some of the enormous pressure. As a Herald colleague from another editorial department put it: “He’s a good bastard”. And New Zealand loves a good bastard.

10 There is an absence of debilitating red herrings which swirled around some All Black coaches.

As for the negative column, material is in short supply. (Obviously Rattue needs to hang out with big bruv and Longknives more!) Failure at the World Cup would be the obvious one but his team won’t bomb and it is inconceivable they would play so badly it would rub out the advantages of keeping him. Hansen may still face tricky questions over tiring veterans next year but he is more likely than anyone else to get the answers right.

As I recall, Penelope, television news used the word “sacked” when attributing comments to Mr Little. In the links that I produced, it is clear that Little wants Rennie to be “dumped”. The word “dumped” is used.Mr Little is quoted as saying that Rennie is “unfit for the job”. He expresses that as a “conclusion”. I appreciate that you may not know much about employment law, so I will explain to you that you do not reach conclusions, particularly adverse conclusions to the effect that somebody is unfit for a particular position, unless you give that person a fair hearing.

While his current terminology is “immediate stand down”, it is patently obvious that he has a closed mind and that he regards Rennie’s position as untenable. The fact that you view any comments attributable to Little through rose tinted glasses is your problem and not anyone else’s.

Comments on the haka are fair enough, and lots of Kiwis feel the same way, although the article you posted the link for is not dealing with the stuff that counts – the playing of the game.

Mind you, part of the reason the 1972-73 All Blacks were unpopular in the Home Countries was that they didn’t do the haka at all on tour, with the exception of that great Barbarians game. Seems some folks are hard to please.

I agree the haka has become OTT, although given rugby is now a professional game, it is actually an important marketing/branding tool for the international game.

You are quite right Penny. Saying that somebody is “unfit for duty” is markedly different to saying that somebody is “unfit for the job”. The point is that Little did not say “unfit for duty”. Here is the extract from one of my links above:

“Mr Little said these new details showed Mr Rennie was “unfit for the job”.”
So, here we have Penelope Bright criticising others for failing to get the facts right while, at the same time quite deliberately distorting a 4 word phrase in a manner to give it an entirely different meaning. Given the simplicity of the phrase itself and the fact that one does not have to search through a myriad of reports in order to sort the wheat from the chaff, one can only conclude that this is a deliberate and calculated distortion.

@ Nookin – given Little thinks Iain Rennie is “unfit for the job”, one would have to wonder how he felt about the fitness for the job of Unite Union head Matt McCarten a few years ago when it was revealed that Unite had withheld around $150,000 PAYE and other employee deductions from IRD over an 18-month period. Or do union leaders have a different standard of being “fit for the job”?
