Just a comment on the ‘gay’ ANZ ATM machine. Many will have noticed that the ANZ publicity about this ATM machine centred on sequinned drag queens and suchlike. Herein lies the true bigotry- ANZ’s implication that somehow homosexuality is all about drag queens, prancing poofs and dikes with butch hairstyles. This misses the reality of being gay by a country mile. A very small % of gay men or women are likely to identify one bit with this clichéd stereotyping.

The bigotry emanates from the ANZ and not from anyone objecting to the existence and waste of money an time on creating such nonsense.

The Judges in the Cricket World Cup “Most Inane Drivel From a Television Commentator” have decreed that the public need wait no longer.

In announcing the recipient as Mark Richardson, the judges stated that notwithstanding that the cup was only in it’s first week of competition, Richardson had racked up such an impressive score that it was impossible for him to be overtaken even at this early stage and accordingly, there was no need for the public to be kept in suspense any longer – albeit that it was arguable that there was in fact no suspense as most pundits would see the choice of Richardson as a forgone conclusion.

The judges of the other World Cup competitions: Most Likely to Embarrass New Zealand when in the Company of Overseas Commentators and Most Gratuitously Patronising Statement of the Bleeding Obvious, are considering whether to follow suit for precisely the same reason.

kowtow Feb 20, 9:31am. No it wasn’t simply a matter of take the plea. You made it quite clear you weren’t concerned about the difference between an indecent and common assault. The police are right to hold their ground. A sex attack is in a differenrt category. Presumably a strike offence? With all that implies.

I despair. It is because I can tell the difference between a common assault and a sex attack (your words) I raised the issue. We’ll see if the police are right when, after a big expensive trial, the man is found guilty of indecent assault or common assault – to which he has already “pleaded” guilty.

Apropos her warship. There was a ship called HMS Penelope. Its backside was so often hit that it became known as HMS Pepperpot. It was put out of its misery by a couple of torpedoes. Regretfully, 417 brave souls went down with it.

The point is this was an assault and he has “pleaded” guilty. Trying to get a conviction for a sexual or indecent assault seems to me trying to make a mountain out of big heap of rock.

Of course we don’t know what happened, but the judge does, more or less.

Tinman- NZ bowlers were sensational, England’s batsmen were a joke.
I felt sorry for Anderson and Broad (Who usually tear into NZ) as imagine coming out to bowl knowing you are only defending 100..
Still not convinced (like many seem to be) that this tournament is done and dusted yet- A very good NZ team in hot form but playing Aussies or South Africa might be a bit tougher…

Unlikely, with these upcoming Wellington ‘Supercity’ Public Meetings / debates.

I predict that the ‘Supercity dragon’ (as it were – meant of course in a caring way Fran) will be politically ‘slayed’ this coming Monday night, and I am looking forward to being there in person to watch it happen …

You might have noticed that most people who comment here are literate. If you haven’t, then probably the clue to your dilemma lies in the way people compose their comments in a written form, then others read them & respond.

Why not then join the dots? It’s fair bet that everyone likely to be affected by an amalgamation knows about it & has a valid opinion about the issue. There’s a good bet that in light of the publicity the proposal has received that everyone’s dog & goldfish are up to speed on the matter too.

As of September 1, Australian internet service providers will be forced to send warning notices to alleged movie pirates, under a draft Copyright Notice Scheme industry code unveiled on Friday. Get caught three times in 12 months and rights holders can “facilitate an expedited preliminary discovery process” – in other words ask your ISP to hand over your details – bypassing a drawn-out court case like the current battle between Australian ISP iiNet and the backers of Academy Award-winning film Dallas Buyers Club.

Your ISP still has the right to appeal this request, but the appeal is unlikely to be successful unless the rights holders haven’t followed the process set down in the draft. To cite the draft agreement between ISPs and rights holders;

Verdict signals amalgamation proposal is a “shambolic con”

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against the Greater Wellington Regional Council on its supercity advertising. The advertising breached the Code of Ethics.

The Authority found the GWRC “Had presented its own assumptions and opinions as fact which was misleading and was likely to exploit the lack of knowledge of the reader.”

It judged that the advertisement “Had not been prepared with a due sense of social responsibility.”

The advertisement in question invented a non-existent problem with water pipes in Lower Hutt to argue that residents should support a supercity so other people in Wellington could help pay for it.

Tony Stallinger, Chief Executive Officer of Hutt City Council – the complainant in this case – says the problem was completely invented.

“The single reason the Regional Council gives Hutt residents for joining a supercity is a complete fabrication.
The campaign for a supercity is a shambolic con.

“GWRC has overstepped the boundaries of democracy – it has tried to fool the public into supporting a supercity.

The Advertising Standards Authority’s ruling confirms this.

“The proposed amalgamation into a supercity is one of the largest issues this region has recently faced. The public deserve the respect of explanations and evidence, not made up facts.”

Tony Stallinger says, “We’re also relieved that the ASA found it was incorrect to say Wellington boards would have greater powers than Auckland local boards. This is an important issue for us.”

Last year all 21 Auckland local boards signed an open complaint to the Auckland Mayor that they felt ‘stifled’ and ‘ignored’ by Auckland Council.

Mr Stallinger says the decision will be a blow to the attempts by the GWRC and the Local Government Commission to secure the “demonstrable support” they legally need in the submissions phase of the process – which closes in two weeks.

Greater Wellington Regional Council initiated the proposal for amalgamation of the region’s nine councils in 2012.

The Local Government Commission released its draft proposal in December last year, and since then has faced criticism for inaccuracy and lack of evidence for its proposed supercity.

Earlier this month the Commission admitted an error, and increased the costs estimate by $30million.

Transition costs are now estimated to be over $200 million.

Where does the TaxPayers’ Union stand on this ‘pro- transparency / anti-corruption REALITY checklist’?

Does the Taxpayers’ Union agree that if New Zealand was genuinely the (now SECOND) ‘least corrupt country in the world’ (according to the arguably meaningless 2014 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index), then we would already have ALL of the following in place?
________________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Get our anti-corruption domestic legislative framework in place so NZ can ratify the UN Convention Against Corruption.

2. Set up an NZ independent anti-corruption body tasked with educating the public and PREVENTING corruption.

3. Change NZ laws to ensure genuine transparency in the funding of candidates for elected public office and political parties at central and local government level.

4. Legislate for an enforceable ‘Code of Conduct’ for NZ Members of Parliament (who make the rules for everyone else).

5. Make it an offence under the Local Government Act 2002 for NZ Local Government elected representatives to breach their ‘Code of Conduct’.

6. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available ‘Register of Interests’ for NZ Local Government elected representatives.

7. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available ‘Register of Interests’ for NZ Central Government staff responsible for property and procurement, (including the Ministry of Health), in order to help prevent ‘conflicts of interest’.

8. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available ‘Register of Interests’ for NZ Local Government staff, and Directors and staff employed by ‘Council-Controlled Organisations (CCOs) responsible for property and procurement.

9. Make it a lawful requirement for details of ‘contracts issued’ – including the name of the contractor; scope, term and value of the contract to be published in NZ Central Government Public Sector, and Local Government (Council), and ‘CouncilControlled Organisation (CCO) Annual Reports so that they are available for public scrutiny.

10. Make it a lawful requirement that a ‘cost-benefit analysis’ of NZ Central Government, and Local Government public finances be undertaken to prove that private procurement of public services previously provided ‘in-house’ is cost-effective for the public majority. If not – then return public service provision to staff directly employed ‘in-house’ and cut out these private contractors who are effectively dependent on ‘corporate welfare’.

11. Legislate for a legally-enforcable ‘Code of Conduct’ for members of the NZ Judiciary, to ensure they are not ‘above the law’.

12. Ensure that ALL NZ Court proceedings are recorded, and audio records made available to parties who request them.

13. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available NZ Judicial ‘Register of Interests’, to help prevent ‘conflicts of interest’.

14. Make it a lawful requirement for a publicly-available NZ ‘Register of Lobbyists’ and ‘Code of Conduct for Lobbyists’ at Central
Government Ministerial level.

15. Make it a lawful requirement at NZ Central and Local Government level for a ‘post-separation employment quarantine’ period from the time officials leave the public service to take up a similar role in the private sector. (Help stop the ‘revolving door’).

16. Make it a lawful requirement that it is only a binding vote of the public majority that can determine whether public assets held at NZ Central or Local Government level are sold; or long-term leased via Public-Private –Partnerships (PPPs).

17. Make it unlawful for politicians to knowingly misrepresent their policies prior to election at central or local government level.

18. Make laws to protect individuals, NGOs and community-based organisations who are ‘whistleblowing’ against ‘conflicts of
interest’ and corrupt practices at central and local government level and within the judiciary.

19. Legislate to help stop ‘State Capture’, a form of ‘grand corruption’ arguably endemic in NZ – where vested interests get their way at the ‘policy level’ before legislation is passed which serves their interests.
