This should be considered a very important issue. No doubt many of the lawyers on this site will say the hoi polloi are just stupid and do not understand how the law works. The problem is we do and do not think it works very well with innocent people being found guilt and the guilty walking free.

I do not case if a witness has a dozen charges for fraud and perjury the jury should hear him or her. The judge can comment on the witnesses credibility and the final call should be that of the jury.

The law is an ass.

Nick Smith has probably got a bit ahead of himself with announcements about using surplus Government land for housing but I cant see he has done too much wrong really. The government could see the interest rate cuts coming and needed to do something quickly to slow down the Auckland housing market a bit. The reserve bank is doing its bit on the demand side and the Government has to do something on the supply side quickly. That meant an announcement of intent without all the ducks lined up because the Auckland council is trying to hold the rest of the country to ransom.

If you were thinking about buying property in Auckland today at prices everyone thinks are more than crazy, the prospect that someone might actually get on and build 10,000 new dwellings over a couple of years would make you think again wouldn’t it?

Paulus Gnome, the problem is not whether Ms Dolezal is or is not black. The problem is that it matters for some purposes whether she is black or not, and it really, really shouldn’t. There should be no context in which being black or not being black makes a difference to how she is treated, or thought of, by other people. Her own opinion as to whether she is black or not should therefore be equally irrelevant.

Having said which, I’m still mulling over that comment of Thomas Sowell: If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 60 years ago, a liberal 30 years ago and a racist today.

Is that true? Does anti-racism now require us to accept different rules and different standards for different races?

Has anything been heard from the Race Relations Commissioner recently?

The ‘cold’ house has had innumerable other families there over the years and
apparently they all survived.
Maybe just maybe the Coroner got to be wrong in his ‘opinion’
It happens.
Or maybe he could point us to the many other fatalities that that particular ‘cold’ house caused?

On the Panel Ella Henry asked why anyone who wasn’t black would want to be. She says that white people have privilege and she has had to live with the burden of being “black” all her life. E.g she was at at a symposium in Oz and went to a Supermarket; she had her bags searched but her two white attendees didn’t. She should have been born a Japanese?

Concerning the ‘refugees / boat people (in light of recent events and pronouncement by various individuals and political ‘leaders’):

Should such a craft be ‘discovered’ making its way across the Tasman (and based on previous experience and observation of MSM practices), would it be reasonable to believe that the kiwi MSM will give the country breathless (hysterical?) ‘minute by minute’ updates as to how it is progressing and its whereabouts, together with full television coverage when it was finally sighted off our coasts? Or that the gweens and labour will be positively falling over themselves with adoration and ecstasy (probably that as well) and that there will be the full ‘Welcome to New Zealand’ committee (s) when the boat load of SMUGGLED (and ILLEGAL) people finally makes its (equally) illegal way onto our shores – irrespective of where it may be.

As with a certain Mr. Zaoui, the fact that these people are ‘illegals’ will of course be completely overlooked and the irresponsible NZMSM will once again try to persuade us that it is ‘asking the ‘hard questions’ – the ones that ‘YOU’ want answers to.

Given that more boats will inevitably try their arm to cross the Tasman, It will be interesting to see whether my hypothesis is correct…

BTW: When (not if) such vessels sink while trying to cross a stretch of ocean renowned as being amongst the roughest in the world, any bets that the MSM (and other ‘special interest’ groups) will loudly wail that ‘its all the (National) government’s fault and deride JK for not personally swimming out to save them?

Neither of the articles linked mention climate change at all… seems to be mining and irrigation that’s using water, in other words land use changes.

Ngauruhoe after 4pm in the winter the latest FMC bulletin has an interesting comment on the incidence of ‘risk-shift’ -‘a social psychology term for the tendency of people to make more daring (riskier) decisions when they are in groups than when they are alone. A corolory added was that this phenomonen ‘was particularly true of young men , whose judgement does not fully develop until they are in their mid twenties’. I would have thought groups would be more rather than less conservative in decision making although I have seen a group on top of a mountain split into 3 subgroups because of disagreemant as to the the best route to descend.

Where was the rule of Law when Russia crushed the Prague spring?

Where was the rule of Law when Russia used mass shelling against civilians in Chechnya?

Where was the rule of law when Russia invaded Georgia?

Russia filled the 20th century with the bodies of millions upon millions of innocents. Russians have no right to judge any other nation on earth.

Once again, your hypocrisy is showing.

The issue of whether or not this blog is liberal or not is irrelevant. DPF allows all views to be shared here. There are no KB rules against conservatives posting here.

National was for most of it’s history a small-c conservative party. It’s membership and it’s MP’s have today have a large number of conservatives. It has only very recently adopted social liberalism, and even then, many of it’s MP’s would not agree with this.

I don’t have a problem with you being functionally illiterate, Griff.

But perhaps you should steer clear of berating me for, in you opinion, butchering the language, when you mutilate it yourself.

Equally, if you want to berate people for being, in your opinion, unscientific on climate change matters, it is probably better not to spout obviously unscientific drivel, as you did on yesterday’s thread about abortion.

The mystery is why his blog gets gunked up with the witterings of diehard conservatives when their natural homes should be “True Blue”, “Crusader Rabbit” or “NZ Conservative”.

I take it as an insult against the New Zealand public who are in the majority liberal, The host of this blog who is a liberal and my own liberal politics.

Up until about 1990 when it accelerated to 3.2mm
Using an average to hide the increase shows you lack of mental capacity to understand basic statistics .
In fact this is even in your link

This turned out to be 0.8 mm per year, which is a surprisingly large amount when compared to the current sea level rise of 3.3 mm per years as estimated by the IPCC. It thus turns out that almost half of the current sea level rise can be explained by expansion of warming sea water, just over one quarter by the melting of glaciers and ice caps and slightly less than one quarter by groundwater depletion.

The greenhouse effect started rising as soon as we started releasing co2 during the industrial revolution
Not in 1950 but in the 1800’s.

No I got that, I just don’t see it as being relevant.

That’s not a mystery. Center Right National party conservatives prefer center Right National party blogs.

The first two blogs on that list are far Right and anti-National, so they are not the natural home of folks like me, and the NZ Conservative is primarily a Roman Catholic blog, and those of us who are not RC might want a wider discussion and engagement with a more diverse set of views.

There’s no accounting for taste nasska.

Personally I went from cautiously hopeful to very skeptical fairly quickly, and ended up deciding that the party had about as much to do with conservatism as a gay pride parade.

In any event the Duke hated dealing with reporters and biographers and “one of the Duke’s more curious traits was a studied indifference to his own history”

Wellington,The Years of the sword , Elizabeth Longford.

Who also stated there is documentary evidence of the Duke’s family as having lived in Ireland since 1226.

Feel free to tell me to piss off… as I know this is personal…..but it is also a matter that interests me…

I don’t for one minute think you are functionally illiterate. Your reading level must be at that of a university graduate, at least.
I think you must have had poor instruction in spelling sometime fairly early in your education. Possibly this has lead to problems with you expressing yourself using formal English conventions. However none of us on this blog have any great difficulty understanding your message(s).
I am vain enough to think that I could sort out your spelling problems (to a certain degree), or at least show you some techniques to improve things.

Seems Colin Craig is going to get the sack as Conservative Party leader. Apparently the party have had enough of his PR stuff ups so the axe falls in a coup tomorrow. This according to Gower on 3News.it seems that the party want to ally themselves with National and Craig is the obstacle to that plan.

That would be a good move. He’s a liability. They need to look at their policies as well. I see nothing conservative in binding referendums, and nothing economically useful in opposing asset sales.

Alas Maggie it is a Little late for that.
As you know I am an aspie.
One of the factors often linked with that is I lack the small motor skill needed to write legibly.
My reading age and comprehension was at university level at age ten.
Unfortunately back in the seventy’s I was excluded from success at school due to my inability to write clearly. My own stubben attitude meant I refused to actually do any work at school if I always received a d due to my work being illegible . My formal eduction ended at fourteen.
A good reference frame is reading the girl with the dragon tattoo. Lisbeth is an Aspie caricature very well drawn.

I agree, and it’s a damn good read. I know you generally don’t watch tv but there is a good little series called The Bridge available online, a very intelligently written crime drama, in which the main protagonist, a female detective, is an aspie. I though her portrayal was spot on.

for goodness sake… I’m married to a mad scientist; I’m not exactly Mrs Normal myself….I don’t need any more insights into the great range of “normality”

But you have confirmed exactly what I thought…. you have been cheated of a decent school education.

I have taught class-loads of boys/young men that have been similarly cheated. All of them liked science when I taught it with hands-on practicals.

Well, my method(s) involve hard work… but 5 minutes/day could produce some results.
