I don’t get it. The reference is obvious, but what does it mean?

It’s either drawing an equivalence or noting a disparity – Key’s hair pulling bullying is either as bad as race baiting, or Labour’s race baiting is as insignificant as Key’s joking around.

Or there’s no relationship or point to it.

I don’t get it.

And the buck toothed chopstick wielding Asian further confuses me because it’s a racist stereotype all on it’s own – so wtf?

In my view, the most racist thing about this cartoon is its depiction of Chinese. This is the nasty way Chinese were portrayed in “Yellow Peril” days”: buck teeth, pig-tailed (a feature which was imposed on them by their Manchu conquerors) and the yellow skin colour. (Some Chinese, especially from the North, will tell you they are the people who are white, and the so-called “whites” are pink!)

Cartoonists ought to shelve such depictions of Chinese as outdated, very wrong, and even offensive. Regardless of any good intentions the cartoonist has, IMHO, depicting Chinese like this is as misguided and mistaken as it would be to use a Nazi-era propaganda depiction of Jews when you are attacking what you see as anti-Jewish prejudice.

This is a 19th Century Western anti-Sino image.

You would have though the artist could be more creative. (Unless they are implying that Labour is stuck in a 19th Century mindset.)

If the artist could have increased the effect of using 19th Century imagery by drawing in the style of that era (or in a faux black-and-white engraving style).

Using modern art styles to deliver historical racial stereotypes is a little offensive.

It’s good to see the real estate industry setting the moral standard?

The Prime Minister said Labour’s use of the information was a “desperate” move, and it knew it was misleading.

“They will know that people on that list, the vast bulk of them, who have Chinese surnames will be the residents or citizens, many of whom Labour will have welcomed to this country.”

Mr Key said Labour had strayed from its traditional stance and become a very different party to the one he used to know.

The Government was compiling information on non-resident investment in the housing market, he said.

“I have always said, if the data shows that there’s a real problem and we need to consider further steps then the Government will consider those further steps.”

He said Australia’s move to stop foreigners buying anything other than new properties had not been effective in curbing rapid house price rises.

Christ some people are serious….I thought it amusing ….and for those who didnt “get it” try this:

An amusing comment on the fact that the Labour Party – which wrung every drop they could out of the ludicrous ponytailgate “scandal” – now being somewhat hoist by their own petard when giving grave offence to all New Zealanders with Chinese heritage..

How’s that? If you still don’t get it, I hope you are not in charge of heavy machinery…or children…or anything, really…

If you have two different cultures completing for the same resources but who don’t associate or understand each other, then you will have problems.

In the future, Chinese in New Zealand are going to have to become Kiwis. This means:

Surrendering their language
Anglicizing their first names
Pledging loyalty to New Zealand
Make an effort to join clubs that are not exclusive Chinese

What a mob of precious petals! David Garrett is spot on the money.

My immediate reaction was – yes that just about sums up Labour and the media. Wall to wall shrieking and caterwauling over John Key playfully pulling a waitress’s ponytail compared with all sorts of nuancing and excuses to justify this most appalling episode of racism seen in NZ for decades.

Labour just lost all hope of any Asian votes or donations. They must be rolling in money and streets ahead of everybody in the polls.

I guess this answers the vital question of how Colin Craig climbed to the top within the Conservative Party.

Yeah, yeah. I know what you’re trying to say Mr Stringer and the comparison of these screams to the “outrage” (TM) around John Key’s ponytail pulling had promise – but Jesus Christ your cartoons land with all the thud of another Justin Bieber video.
