Stephieboy. Interesting that Smithsonian has to quote an article in the Guardian.
But read the bit about glaciers. Interested in the comment from the researchers.

Researchers note that the retreat is profound enough that even if climate change somehow stopped and temperatures remained stable, glaciers would likely to continue to melt.

This after researchers also note glaciers have been retreating since the end of the mini iceage in the mid 1800s!!!
So wouldnt get too excited about using this as a hammer in the man made global warming debate.

Just more father bashing by Amy Adams and the Law Commission. Men are still being affected by the miscarriage of justice by the Peter Ellis case. The Minister of Injustice cares more about process than doing something about this blot on the NZ Justice system.

I have read the document that blames men for the vast majority of domestic violence without evidence provided so the evidence is accessible.

It mentions the much higher rate of Maori violence but do not demonize Maori like the paper does with men.

It also mentions higher rates of homosexual violence but instead of blaming homosexuals society is blamed due to discrimination.

The right to privacy in these circumstances is surely superseded by another person’s right to be warned against a high risk of physical harm. Let’s stop using gender neutral terms on this subject. Men might sometimes be injured by violent women, but the injuries a man can do to a woman are usually very much worse, which is why any man who strikes a woman is beneath contempt. His rights to privacy are hard to respect if police have found his female partner has been battered.

Actually it is an important and relevant measurement as at that level of humidity/ temperature your chances of death due to heat stroke increase. Your body can not regulate its internal temperatures using evaporation.

The really striking feature of Obama’s climate change plan is the calculation that the local environmental and health benefits of reducing the use of coal to generate electricity will far outweigh the direct economic costs, even without considering the impact on CO2 emissions. This is consistent with economic research on the subject, most notably this 2011 review, which concluded that the overall damage done by coal is potentially several times larger than the benefits.

A similar assessment is reflected in the Chinese government’s decision to close down all the coal-fired power stations in the vicinity of Beijing and other major cities.

This means we are still in the region of “no regrets” policies on climate change, in which measures to reduce CO2 emissions are beneficial even without taking climate change into account. The fact that so much can be achieved with so little downside is largely due to the availability of so much “low-hanging fruit” in energy efficiency measures, and even more to the startling reductions in the cost of renewable energy, particularly solar photovoltaics. As well as others I noted the new domestic violence measures being led by Amy Adams. She says that New Zealand incidence of domestic violence remains “horrific” despite the world leading domestic violence act of 1995.

For my $.02 worth I would say that one of the causes of domestic violence is the decline of marriage and the rise of live-in partners. The numbers show that husbands are much less likely to abuse their spouses than partners are to abuse their live-in partner. So I would like to see us raise the culture of marriage and encourage everyone to get married rather than live together. Experience and revelation go hand-in-hand on this one.

I would expect to see with the rise of marriage a decline in domestic violence which would be welcomed by people from all walks of life.

Sure as the link continues ,after the capture of Jerusalem they subsequent crusades were largely defensive ,but only in the sense of trying to keep what they had conquered and certainly not the conquest , pillaging and plundering of Constantinenoble in 1204 . This act of sacrilegious vandalism severely weakened the Byzantine State and Eastern Orthodox Church.

Living in a rural area 5 hours drive from Auckland and on rural delivery , we don’t get much junk mail so it was a very great surprise to pick up the mail this morning and see that Colin Craig’s pamphlet has managed to get down to the sticks. Just in time – after the rain there are a few frosts predicted so we need stuff with which to light the fire.

Interesting comments from stephieboy about the Crusades. The facts are that the Muslims were harassing and killing pilgrims to Jerusalem at the time. They also took action to destroy the tomb of Jesus, the holy Sepulchre. This was important because in those days holy sites and particularly the site of the tomb of Jesus were at the centre of the religious practice of Christians.

So the Pope was calling for a crusade to aid the pilgrims so they could travel to Jerusalem safely and also to take over Jerusalem so they could restore the holy sites. So the Crusade was a response to Muslim aggression, which unfortunately stephieboy has omitted to describe.

The debate as here whether it was out of religious zealotry or an act of cold blood -ethnic cleansing ? A combination of both more likely .

What do the Crusades have to do with anything today?

Expansion of territory was considered normal at the time and there is little point in judging that by today’s standards. The Turks were not going to stop trying to expand westward so there had a to be a fight sooner or later. Massacre of civilians was by no means unprecedented though the Muslims generally preferred to sell their captives into slavery.

From about 1500 onwards, Europe moved ahead of the rest of the world due to a range of factors, but mostly due to governments encouraging trade, competition and science against the wishes of religious leaders. Whereas in China and the Muslim world governments and religious leaders worked together to prevent progress.

Prior to 1500, there was nothing particularly civilized about Christian societies compared to Muslim or Chinese ones. Surely the superiority of Christian societies over Muslim ones today is self-evident without trying to defend what happened in the middle ages.

Dear Kamala and team …

Like Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee ( Old Bruiser very often an adversary of mine), I view this assessment of CCC Councillors a complete botch. Even the article titles miss the mark.

The major reason for this, I think, is because The Press assessment exercise is not issues focused.

As I see it … the key issue is …

… how are the CCC elected representatives performing, in leading the changes required, so the organisation is in a fit shape to assume its responsibilities and restore confidence ?

The most helpful aspect of the earthquakes, is that they showed up clearly just how dysfunctional the Christchurch City Council is.

Some of us … just some of us … were well aware of this since the early 1990’s.

The result has been that what should have been about a $20 billion exercise, will blow out to in excess of $46 billion (and it won’t stop there … to say nothing of the unnecessary heartache involved as well) … for the reasons outlined within an Interest Co NZ article I wrote way back in the very early stages of June 2011 …

Anyone been following the ongoing story (a real indictment on the ‘average’ Australian) about the abuse an AFL player of aborigine-origins by the name of Adam Goodes has been copping?

Goodes is 35 and has been a dual Brownlow Medallist (think ‘Best and Fairest’ in the comp), a dual premiership player, a four-time All-Australian, was named a member of the Indigenous Team of the Century and has represented Australia in the International Rules Series.

Wikipedia writes:

‘In an essay titled “The Indigenous Game: A Matter of Choice”, published in the 2008 AFL history book The Australian Game of Football Since 1858, Goodes writes of the ancient Aboriginal game, Marngrook, and its theorised link to the origins of Australian rules football: “I don’t know the truth, but I believe in the connection. Because I know that when Aborigines play Australian Football with a clear mind and total focus, we are born to play it.” Controversy erupted when, during an appearance on The Marngrook Footy Show, AFL historian Gillian Hibbins called Goodes a “racist”, adding: “If you define racism as believing a race is superior in something, this is basically what he [Goodes] was doing.”
On 24 May 2013, during the AFL’s annual Indigenous Round, a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter called Goodes an “ape”. Upon hearing the abuse, Goodes pointed the girl out to security and had her ejected from the stadium. After the game, Collingwood president Eddie McGuire apologised to Goodes on behalf of the club. McGuire said that Collingwood had a zero tolerance policy towards racism, but also said that the girl, who later apologised to Goodes, did not know that what she had said was a racial slur. Goodes said that he was “gutted” and that he had “never been more hurt”.
Over the following years, and particularly in 2015, Goodes was repeatedly and loudly booed by opposition fans at most matches. The motivation for and acceptability of the booing generated wide public debate, which dominated media coverage from both sports and political commentators for weeks at a time during the year, and even drew comment from the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott. Many considered the booing to be unacceptable and motivated by racism—either through a dislike of his inherent aboriginality, or because those booing were affronted by the strong political positions Goodes had taken on racial issues – and called on the AFL to take direct action to stop it. Others considered the booing acceptable as a show of disapproval for Goodes’ actions – including a perception that his approach in dealing with the Collingwood fan who called him an ape was heavy-handed, and for statements he had made during his time as Australian of the Year which had been seen to denigrate the history of European settlement in Australia – and defended the rights of fans to continue booing.
During a match against Carlton in May 2015, Goodes celebrated a goal by performing an indigenous war dance in which he mimed throwing a spear at the Carlton cheer squad. Goodes said after the incident that the dance was based on one he learned from under-16s indigenous team the Flying Boomerangs, and that it was intended as a symbol of indigenous pride during Indigenous Round, not as a means of offending or intimidating the crowd. However, many spectators were offended by the aggressive nature of the spear-throwing gesture or considered it retaliatory against the booing he had received in previous weeks, and it was criticised by many commentators for being inflammatory to the situation which had received particularly wide media coverage during the previous week. The booing of Goodes intensified in the months after the war dance.
Owing to the stress caused by the booing and attention, Goodes took leave from the game in August 2015. Many clubs and players in the AFL supported Goodes in the first week of his leave by wearing indigenous-themed guernseys or armbands, and a video was prepared by the eighteen club captains to discourage the crowd from booing.’

The great thing about the Internet is that you can say what you like whether or not it has any truth to it. There is heaps of evidence and the historians I read while doing a paper on the Crusades this year at Massey University are in agreement that pilgrimage to Jerusalem was very dangerous and many were getting harassed and even murdered on the way.

The by now Turkish rulers of the area persecuted Christian pilgrims who were also harassed by local villagers and bandits. This meant that only very well armed parties of pilgrims were able to actually make the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Others were turned back. Rodney Stark “God’s Battalions”.

In regard to your 2nd point the Crusade was to recapture the holy Sepulchre because it was being destroyed by the Muslims.
“In 1009 the holy Sepulchre had been vandalised on the orders of the Fatamid caliph Hakim. The tomb had been levelled almost to the ground so that only the floor and the lower parts of the wall survived”. Jonathan Riley Smith – The Crusades: A History.
Regrettably the Muslims of yesteryear were just as likely to destroy religious monuments they did not approve of as are the Muslims of today.

With regard to the crusaders laying siege to Jerusalem and massacring its inhabitants that’s probably true, though stories of blood up to the bridles of the horses is probably an exaggeration and reflects biblical apocalyptic imagery rather than the facts. However it must be said that according to the rules of the time cities who did not surrender when faced by an opposing army were liable to have their inhabitants massacred as a deterrent to other cities. Cities who surrendered rather than necessitating a long siege were likely to have their inhabitants spared. Those were the brutal rules of the time, unfortunate though they may be.

Manolo and Scott, as regards the The Crusades especially 9/11 and the war on terror its not easy to look back at the Crusades with some objectivity and an impartial regard to the facts . A lot of fear and prejudice has been whipped especially in Conservative American Christian University’s and colleges etc that has caused a revisionist approach to the Crusades and not with due regard to objectivity and the facts . hence this simplistic interpretation of them been a defensive operation in favour of the key players like Pope ran II.

The following thesis by the Theology student does to appear to have a due regard scholarly to the facts of history without pushing any ideological agenda both left or right , c.f “God’s Battalions” by Rod Stark . BTW a sociologist and not a Historian ,

The bitterness and vitriol towards Sir Peter Talley and the Talley Group at the Stranded is astounding. They want people to refrain from buying their products in a post called the “Talley Ban”.
Reminds me a while back Darien Fenton wanting people to blacklist all of the Mad Butcher shops because Sir Peter Leitch endorsed the Prime Minister FFS !~

Late Night Vet Call.

A dog lover, whose dog was a female and “in heat,” agreed to look after her neighbour’s male dog while the neighbour was on vacation.

She had a large house and she believed that she could keep the two dogs apart. However, as she was drifting off to sleep, she heard awful howling and moaning sounds.

She rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together and unable to disengage, as frequently happens when dogs mate.

Unable to separate them, and perplexed as to what to do next, and although it was very late at night, she called her vet, who answered in a
very grumpy voice. After she explained the problem to him, the vet said, “Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and
the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and he will be able to withdraw.”
“Do you think that will work?” she asked.
“Just worked for me,” he replied.

4.2 The ideology surrounding the First Crusade p 31 – 32

“…It is therefore of vital importance to investigate firstly the thinking of the people during the crusades, and secondly the thinking of later generations concerning the crusades. It should also be noted that the focus will mostly be on the thinking of those in the Latin West, since this is where the idea of crusade originated (Lock 2006:299). The crusade as practised by the West with a combination of pilgrimage, penance and holy war was completely foreign to the thinking of the Christians in Byzantium who considered defensive wars necessary but regrettable (Lock 2006:299).

4.2.1 Violence

As pointed out in the previous chapter, Christian thought developed from pacifism to just war to holy war during the centuries leading up to the First Crusade. Already in the ninth century, Pope Leo IV, declared that if a man were killed in battle while defending the Church, he would receive a reward in heaven (Bartlett 1999:11). Others after him went even further, declaring that those dying for such a cause should have all their sins remitted (Bartlett 1999:11). It was also during the ninth century that Charlemagne converted pagans by the power of the sword, making violence into a method for mission acceptable to the Christian community (Pillay & Hofmeyr 1991:91).

According to Madden (2002:71), no crusade would be possible without the eleventh century ‘revolution in Church thinking’ concerning violence. It was during this century that holy war became part of the papal programme (Tyerman 2006:47). The association of the papacy with holy war was first made clear with the Civitate campaign of Pope Leo IX in 1053 (Madden 2002:72). During this campaign the papacy could not secure imperial aid against Norman counts in southern Italy, so Pope Leo recruited German soldiers and personally led them against the Normans (Madden 2002:72). Although Pope Leo maintained that he raised this army ‘to compel the Normans to submit without shedding blood’, the outcome was a battle in which the papal troops ‘suffered a decisive defeat and Leo was captured’ (Madden 2002:72).

During the eleventh century, the Church’s policy resulted in the directing of aggression towards non-Christian enemies (Bartlett 1999:11). Gregory VII, the most militant of the reforming popes (associating with holy war) attempted to recruit knights from across
Europe to form a papal army to fight for papal interests (Tyerman 2006:47). Gregory ‘significantly developed the theory and practice of holy war and holy warriors’ (Tyerman 2006:47). One of his favourite scriptural quotations was Jeremiah 48:10 – ‘…and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed’ (Tyerman 2006:47). Gregory VII also granted spiritual rewards on several occasions to those who took up arms for his cause (Madden2002:74). …”

BTW, the expansion of the Seljuk Turks was not an exclusive concern to the Western Christians and Byzantines but to other Muslims as well .

The Crusades were totally a response to Muslim aggression. Mohammed was a warlord who forced his ideology (I won’t call it a religion) on others by force, slaughtering Jews, Christians, and anyone else who didn’t convert to Islam. Even after he died his followers conquered North Africa, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Iran, Jerusalem, Constantinople, Spain, and on and on. They were only stopped by the Crusades. They did this from the year 630 until the present day.

Here’s a timeline.

The Timeline

630 Two years before Muhammad’s death of a fever, he launches the Tabuk Crusades, in which he led 30,000 jihadists against the Byzantine Christians. He had heard a report that a huge army had amassed to attack Arabia, but the report turned out to be a false rumor. The Byzantine army never materialized. He turned around and went home, but not before extracting ‘agreements’ from northern tribes. They could enjoy the ‘privilege’ of living under Islamic ‘protection’ (read: not be attacked by Islam), if they paid a tax (jizya).

This tax sets the stage for Muhammad’s and the later Caliphs’ policies. If the attacked city or region did not want to convert to Islam, then they paid a jizya tax. If they converted, then they paid a zakat tax. Either way, money flowed back to the Islamic treasury in Arabia or to the local Muslim governor.

632—634 Under the Caliphate of Abu Bakr the Muslim Crusaders reconquer and sometimes conquer for the first time the polytheists of Arabia. These Arab polytheists had to convert to Islam or die. They did not have the choice of remaining in their faith and paying a tax. Islam does not allow for religious freedom.

633 The Muslim Crusaders, led by Khalid al—Walid, a superior but bloodthirsty military commander, whom Muhammad nicknamed the Sword of Allah for his ferocity in battle (Tabari, 8:158 / 1616—17), conquer the city of Ullays along the Euphrates River (in today’s Iraq). Khalid captures and beheads so many that a nearby canal, into which the blood flowed, was called Blood Canal (Tabari 11:24 / 2034—35).

634 At the Battle of Yarmuk in Syria the Muslim Crusaders defeat the Byzantines. Today Osama bin Laden draws inspiration from the defeat, and especially from an anecdote about Khalid al—Walid. An unnamed Muslim remarks: ‘The Romans are so numerous and the Muslims so few.’ To this Khalid retorts: ‘How few are the Romans, and how many the Muslims! Armies become numerous only with victory and few only with defeat, not by the number of men. By God, I would love it . . . if the enemy were twice as many’ (Tabari, 11:94 / 2095). Osama bin Ladin quotes Khalid and says that his fighters love death more than we in the West love life. This philosophy of death probably comes from a verse like Sura 2:96. Muhammad assesses the Jews: ‘[Prophet], you are sure to find them [the Jews] clinging to life more eagerly than any other people, even polytheists’ (MAS Abdel Haleem, The Qur’an, Oxford UP, 2004; first insertion in brackets is Haleem’s; the second mine).

634—644 The Caliphate of Umar ibn al—Khattab, who is regarded as particularly brutal.

635 Muslim Crusaders besiege and conquer of Damascus

636 Muslim Crusaders defeat Byzantines decisively at Battle of Yarmuk.

637 Muslim Crusaders conquer Iraq at the Battle of al—Qadisiyyah (some date it in 635 or 636)

638 Muslim Crusaders conquer and annex Jerusalem, taking it from the Byzantines.

638—650 Muslim Crusaders conquer Iran, except along Caspian Sea.

639—642 Muslim Crusaders conquer Egypt.

I was having a quick look at info about the crusades earlier – one thing I hadn’t realised was that European Jews got massacred from time to time as part of the crusade process as well.

Be sure to disable the keyloggers etc.

Windows 10 defaults to keylogging, harvesting browser history, purchases, and covert listening

By default, Microsoft gets to see your location, keystrokes and browser history — and listen to your microphone, and some of that stuff is shared with “trusted [by Microsoft, not by you] partners.”
You can turn this all off, of course, by digging through screen after screen of “privacy” dashboards, navigating the welter of tickboxes that serve the same purposes as all those clean, ration-seeming lines on the craps table: to complexify the proposition so you can’t figure out if the odds are in your favor.

NRT: 43,000 unemployed under National

The latest Household Labour Force Survey was released today, showing that despite Treasury projections of a fall, unemployment had risen for the second quarter in a row. There are now 148,000 people unemployed, 43,000 more since Nationa has taken office

So much for the “recovery” – unemployment bottomed out at 5.5% in September last year, and is now going back up, so it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing kiwis back in jobs anytime soon. Instead, unemployment seems to be structurally a full 2% higher under National than under Labour. Which is 40,000 more people out of work, their families scraping to get by on a pittance. As for National’s “something special”, we blinked and missed it. Unless you’re a rich MP owning multiple houses in Auckland, of course, in which case you’re rolling in it while the peasants starve…

Reid,

Your views and previews article was an excellent read. The problem the likes of you and I have is that in explaining what we see is that most people are only able to see events in isolation. “The dumbing down” of education has been evident in NZ since the 1990s and in America long before then. Most people will debate though the individual merits of NCEA or charter schools or comment on school leavers rudimentary grasp of English and Maths. Few see the long term trend and to recognise it is deliberate because to do so would shatter their faith in the system and our rulers who are supposed to act in our best interests.

The other thing most fail to grasp is that we have in fact become a 1 parry state adopting the same socially destructive policies AS EVERY SINGLE WESTERN COUNTRY but when you point this out, most people retreat back to the left vs. right politics they imagine rules the world.

Reminds me of the great quote by Nietsche – “insanity in individuals is rare, in Nations it is the norm”

The legislation regarding name suppression needs to be taken apart, scrutinised & rewritten. As it stands it protects violent & sexual offenders far more than the victims who at very least deserve to have final say on whether it needs to be granted.

I note that in the USA court ordered name suppression is unknown yet the sky stays firmly in its place.

Mike – the problem you have is you believe what you are told and have utmost faith in the benevolence and wisdom of a central ruling power called “The State”

Given that they give you a paycheck and you attend their propaganda workshops as part of your conditions of employment this does not surprise me.

nasska I agree with the American form of naming the offender but not the victim. We are sadly lacking in that area. I for one would welcome all sex offenders being named but with MAJOR suppression orders surrounding the nature of the relationship to the victim.

As it stands now, the law is an ass.

There’s another aspect worth looking at ABS. As such offenses can absolutely wreck a person’s reputation regardless of whether they are actually found guilty there’s a good argument for automatic suppression up until when or if they are convicted.

On conviction they get named…..no exceptions.

I am not against it per se, our laws need to be updated to account for the crimes that are insidious. We need to punish the offenders. But how many times do we see a case where some dirty scumbag has their name protected to protect others? How do we as parents, safeguard our children against those offenders? This is where Ms Adams has let down caring trustworthy males to focus specifically on ‘protecting women’. Most offenses should be publicly accountable not just ‘save the woman week’.
