Earth Has its Hottest Summer and Hottest August on Record

August 2015 was Earth’s hottest August on record, and the Northern Hemisphere summer period of June-July-August was the hottest summer since record keeping began in 1880, said NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) on Thursday. NASA rated August 2015 as the 2nd warmest August on record, a scant 0.01°C from tying August 2014’s record mark. August 2015’s warmth makes the year-to-date period (January – August) the warmest such period on record, according to both NOAA and NASA. NOAA said that August 2015 was the sixth month in 2015 to break its monthly temperature record, joining February, March, May, June, and July. August 2015 tied with January 2007 for the third warmest monthly departure from average of any of the 1628 months since records began in January 1880 (the record warmest departures occurred in February 2015 and March 2015). Over the oceans, August 2015 had the warmest departure from average of any month in the historical record (previous record: July 2015.) A potent El Niño event in the Eastern Pacific that crossed the threshold into the “strong” category in early July continues to intensify, and strong El Niño events release a large amount of heat to the atmosphere, typically boosting global temperatures by at least 0.1°C. This extra bump in temperature, when combined with the long-term warming of the planet due to human-caused emissions of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide, makes it extremely likely that 2015 will be Earth’s second consecutive warmest year on record. The UK Met Office put out a press release earlier this week predicting that 2016 will continue to see record or near-record levels of global heat, and it is quite possible that Earth will see three consecutive years with record-breaking surface temperatures: 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Auckland Council at its best!

‘Councillor Dick Quax did not accept that most of the increased staff costs were due to growth, saying a lot of the increase was at the top end of the salary bands, where 1912 staff were paid more than $100,000 a year, (a minimum of $191,200.000; 7.4 flag referendums!) and 36 more than $300,000.

Last week, the council released figures showing the staff budget of $729 million had risen to $792 million and fulltime equivalent staff numbers increased by 208 to 9678.

Councillor Cameron Brewer said that five years ago, ratepayers were promised the Super City would do “more stuff with less staff”.

“Every year since, without fail, Auckland Council’s staff numbers and costs have climbed as the mayor has completely squandered the opportunity to deliver the benefits of amalgamation,” he said.
Mayor Len Brown refused to comment on the latest staff costs and numbers, which have risen steadily in the five years of his leadership.
Mr Brown last year refused a similar Herald request to comment on staffing issues’

I know I should expect nothing different, but National Radio this morning devoted 20 minutes between 0700 and 0720 crossing to reporters around the country breathlessly reporting on the “effects” of the tsunami on New Zealand (essentially nothing – “yes it is a nice sunny morning here in Gisborne.”).

After 20 minutes we got a cross to Chile. 1 million evacuated. Serious damage from the actual tsunami. I mean, WTF are the thinking?

When are National going to rid taxpayers of the railways liability they inherited from Cullen? This latest display of public servant irresponsibility, laziness, and incompetence with brakes on a train in Wellington, go to show how unemployable these unionised morons are. If it means selling it for a loss, money is saved in the long-term, as nothing will or can run efficiently and viably when staffed with public servants hiding behind unions protecting their inabilities.

Exculding the “one off” massive right offs that occur every 3 or 4 yrs fail rail losses around $200 million pa net. That will mean some part of fail rail might make money say $150 million pa. Other parts then loss $350 million.

So for policital reasons only understood by the mongs on the left the liability that is fail rail is much more than the reported annual losses.

The biggest joke is Helen Kelly et all are damning the govt for not doing everything they want on Health and Safety while the union delegates (including the railways) are fighting tooth and nail not to comply. And if anyone points out they are acting contrary to the law… they get them fired.

Mind you, as bb would no doubt point out, there is no comparison made with other sports. Would be interesting to see the All Blacks’ google search stats compared to, say, Manchester United, the New York Yankees or the San Francisco 49ers (and I’m not referring to the so-called “Jarryd Hayne” factor!) Most likely rugby is a blip on the radar. But then who cares, other sub-editors dreaming up headlines?!

No matter what, at least it confirms it is not just NZ rugby fans, let alone our shallow cheer-leading media making a fuss about our team Seems the Poms lead with us front and centre too.

BTW – anyone heartily sick of the soap-opera and pre-game talk this last week? Is standard for any big world sports event – Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Superbowl, Baseball’s World Series…but you just want it to be over and get on with some bloody rugby!

Not too many big games in the first few days – England vs Fiji has some potential for an upset, as does France vs Italy. Also, I would not discount Argentina against the All Blacks.

Griff, what was the actual temperature for this new record? Its only in climatology where they refuse to tell you the actual readings. Imagine if the Olympics was full of events where competitors had broken the world record but the administrators refused to say what the old record was and what the new one is.

How are we non-funded scientists supposed to understand the gravitas of the situation if we can’t see how much the previous record has been “smashed” by.

I also find it a little suspicious that this new record warming has been reported on since January. Almost as if the news was pre-written.

Mohamed is familiar with anti-Islamic politics. He once made national headlines for debating a Florida pastor who burned a Quran.

And then note that the Council on American-Islamic Relations got involved. They have a close relationship with the White House.

So the story breaks on Monday and the President is already talking about it on Wednesday drawing attention to something in Texas right before the Republican Presidential Debate.

Can we all just admit a public relations firm, on behalf of CAIR, made sure this story got out as quickly as possible and that the White House would note it and comment on it.

And I’ll just ignore the part of the story only trickling out now that apparently the kid put the clock in suitcase under his desk where it started beeping, disrupting the class.

The arrest was dumb. But everything else following it was no doubt orchestrated. An Islamic activist’s son takes electronic circuit boards as a clock to school a few days after September 11th, he gets arrested in a city where there are already charges of Islamophobia, and within 48 hours it is a national story with the President weighing in.

Those Australians are being anti-democratic by trying to deny freedom of worship to Muslims.

Freedom of conscience and belief is essential to a healthy democracy – when they are denied, democracy is seriously weakened.

Muslims really ought to be so impressed by Christianity when they come to Western countries that they convert. All those protesters would do far more for democracy by improving their own religious practices to aid in the mass conversion of Muslims than they are doing by protesting.

I can throw some light on this for you and all the other haters who upticked you:

Everyone I’ve spoken to in the last month supports Trump. Mind you I don’t speak to many Democrats. The city I live in is a Republican stronghold for good reason. We got the best weather without the liberals.
I can tell you why Trump appeals to Americans. You get into a conversation with the average American male of 40+ and he is basically Trump. You get together at a dinner party or watch a ball game and the males start pointing their fingers, gesticulating and have the answer for everything. The culture is theatrical. Everything you do is undertaken as though you’re on a stage with a packed audience. It’s no wonder the average self-effacing Kiwi can’t comprehend why Trump appeals. I was youngish at the time, but I’m pretty sure Bush was elected as a similar type of straight shooter as Trump.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Kiwi roots. We’re more real and less inclined to posture. You sit down with a Kiwi and a beer and you know you’re both telling the truth. The bonds of friendship deepen over time. You sit down with your American friends and you’re both playing a part, which is very enjoyable while it lasts but you can also end up with an empty wallet and be no further ahead in your friendship. I have good friends from both cultures but the way these bonds are forged are very different.
I’m pretty sure Bush was elected as a similar type of straight shooter as Trump.
In the American culture, the males are straight shooters and the females are “pretty faces” as Trump called Fiorina. But, (and this will bewilder the average Kiwi), American females are “pretty faces packing heat!”
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only housewife banned from owning a handgun in case I get carried away and pepper an argument with a bit of gunshot. The other ladies in town would regularly head out to the practice range and I’m glad they have my back.
Men and women in the U.S are equals and individuals but operate differently and very effectively. We don’t have to legislate for equality in these parts.
These debates are pure showmanship. There’s a long way to go but I’m picking Fiorana with Bush as a running mate. Or Trump/Bush.
Fiorana is merciless. She’s a combination of Putin crossed with Kate Bush. Lethal.
Trump has already targeted Fiorina in a manner that suggests she’s a much bigger threat than Rubio or Walker. It would be great theater to see Fiorana run against Clinton to claim the prize of POTUS and HBIC.

I personally have felt the weight of Western prejudice much like the Australian Mosque.

I was once on a long haul flight back to New Zealand. The night before we my friends and I were discussing progressive Islam and drinking heavily. Needless to say by the time I boarded my flight I was dry like the dessert and when I woke up with still 10 hours to go also very hung over. I was so hung over that my hands were shaking, I had the sweats and generally feeling very pale and unwell.
I decided to turn to Allah for help and pass the time by reading my favourite book the Quaran.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, the woman next to me decided that just because I’m a sweat unshaved and my hands are trembling as I hold the Quaran and softly whisper in Arabic, I must be a terrorist.
So the sky marshals detained me and beat me mercilessly in the economy class galley until the plane landed in Auckland.

Total prejudice.

Had a bit of a discussion with a very opinionated leftie neighbour who is vicious and nasty towards Key saying he only gave some of his salary away to charity “only once”. “Trust me” she says “I know about these things”.

Would love to prove the opinionated leftie neighbour wrong !!

In light of your previous comments here on Kiwiblog that seem to be satirical, I’m not sure whether your 11:37 fits into that genre. The beating you mercilessly part is what makes me think that it’s just another satirical comment.

However, just to balance things out, I have my own story with regards to flying and prejudice after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre. When I was flying to NZ sometime around that time, I was detained and searched for bomb making materials. Me, a European looking woman was subjected to scrutiny just in case I was a terrorist, even though I didn’t really fit the profile of the time. A desire, I think, of Westerners trying not to be prejudiced.

DHB slammed over arrested doctor

When our Doctors get themselves arrested to bring attention to the Government selling us out to multinational corporations we should be very worried!

The Whanganui District Health Board has been told to “pull its head in” after summoning a senior hospital doctor to a disciplinary meeting over his part in a Trans-Pacific Partnership protest.

Emergency medicine specialist Chris Cresswell was arrested last week after he climbed on top of Whanganui MP Chester Borrows’ car and sat on it.

Dr Cresswell, who is also the president of the Wanganui branch of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS), climbed on to the vehicle in his scrubs and stethoscope during Deputy Prime Minister Bill English’s visit on Friday.

He told the Chronicle his attire was to emphasise doctors also opposed the TPP, as it would have a huge impact on the price of medicine.

He was given a verbal warning by police but not charged.

This week, however, the Whanganui District Health Board (WDHB) wrote to Dr Cresswell expressing concern at his “recent views” as reported in the Chronicle, ASMS executive director Ian Powell said.

The DHB was worried his views could “damage the reputation of the Whanganui District Health Board”, he said.

“It’s outrageous that this health board apparently considers it’s unacceptable for doctors to express an opinion on matters affecting patients and their ability to deliver the best possible health care to New Zealanders,” Mr Powell said.

A North Island police station received this question from a resident through the feedback section of a local Police website:

“I would like to know how it is possible for police officers to continually harass people and get away with it?”

In response, a sergeant posted this reply:

First of all, let me tell you this … it’s not easy. In the Palmerston North and rural area we average one cop for every 505 people. Only about 60 per cent of those cops are on general duty (or what you might refer to as “general patrols”) where we do most of our harassing.

The rest are in non-harassing units that do not allow them contact with the day to day innocents. At any given moment, only one-fifth of the 60 per cent of general patrols are on duty and available for harassing people while the rest are off duty. So, roughly, one cop is responsible for harassing about 6000 residents.

When you toss in the commercial business and tourist locations that attract people from other areas, sometimes you have a situation where a single cop is responsible for harassing 15,000 or more people a day.

Now, your average eight-hour shift runs 28,800 seconds long. This gives a cop two-thirds of a second to harass a person, and then only another third of a second to drink a Massey iced coffee AND then find a new person to harass. This is not an easy task. To be honest, most cops are not up to the challenge day in and day out. It is just too tiring. What we do is utilise some tools to help us narrow down those people we can realistically harass.

PHONE: People will call us up and point out things that cause us to focus on a person for special harassment. “My neighbour is beating his wife” is a code phrase used often. This means we’ll come out and give somebody some special harassment. Another popular one is, “There’s a guy breaking into a house.” The harassment team is then put into action.

CARS: We have special cops assigned to harass people who drive. They like to harass the drivers of fast cars, cars with no insurance or drivers with no licences and the like. It’s lots of fun when you pick them out of traffic for nothing more obvious than running a red light. Sometimes you get to really heap the harassment on when you find they have drugs in the car, they are drunk, or have an outstanding warrant on file.

LAWS: When we don’t have phone or cars, and have nothing better to do, there are actually books that give us ideas for reasons to harass folks. They are called “statutes”. These include the Crimes Act, Summary Offences Act, Land Transport Act and a whole bunch of others… They spell out all sorts of things for which you can really mess with people. After you read the law, you can just drive around for a while until you find someone violating one of these listed offences and harass them. Just last week I saw a guy trying to steal a car. Well, the book says that’s not allowed. That meant I had permission to harass this guy.

It is a really cool system that we have set up, and it works pretty well. We seem to have a never-ending supply of folks to harass. And we get away with it. Why? Because, for the good citizens who pay the tab, we try to keep the streets safe for them, and they pay us to “harass” some people.

Next time you are in Palmerston North, give me the old “single finger wave”. That’s another one of those codes. It means, “You can harass me.” It’s one of our favourites.

Key, named in this year’s Rich List as worth $50 million, said he was planning to give away a chunk of the $361,000 PM’s salary if his party won the upcoming election.

The self-made multi-millionaire said he already donated money from the $224,500 a year he earned as opposition leader.

“I already donate a good part of the pay I receive as Leader of the Opposition to charities and other good causes. I will continue that practice should I become Prime Minister,” Key, above, told Sunday News.

Ask your “opinionated leftie neighbour” how much Andrew Little (as opposition leader) is currently donating to charity.

Griff, what was the actual temperature for this new record? Its only in climatology where they refuse to tell you the actual readings. Imagine if the Olympics was full of events where competitors had broken the world record but the administrators refused to say what the old record was and what the new one is.

Interesting analogy given that such records are only eligible for recognition if the conditions the competition are held in meet certain requirements. For instance, a gale-force tail wind may see someone run the 100m very fast indeed but it would be discounted because the wind biased the result regardless of what the “actual reading” was.

I witnessed Dr Cresswell’s behaviour last Friday, and he was going out of his way to be disruptive and obnoxious towards those in the vicinity going about their lawful business, and to businesses adjacent to where Bill English was speaking.

I will defend his right to protest to the grave. However he went far beyond what was reasonable protest last Friday, and was justifiably arrested. By choosing to wear his work apparel, and by making statements in the media both before and after his little publicity stunt, he brought his employer into the argument and into probable disrepute. The DHB management has done exactly the right thing by inviting him to a disciplinary meeting, but the ASMS is now trying to pre-empt the outcome. You’d think the union for senior doctors would exercise better judgment in what fights they pick.

I have just received an email from the head Building Inspector at a council telling me that I need to get a GeoTech report to satisfy them that my building site is not at risk of liquefaction.

My building site is rated LOW by council.
My building site is at a beach on 10 meters of solid clean SAND .

How in the FUCK is it in danger of liquefaction????????????????

But $3,000 and a couple of weeks later all will be ok I suppose….
