This is a bad decision. One would hope that this arsehole will definitely be going to jail for a few years. At the very least he could be given the choice of finding another suitable place or going to jail till the next trial. Judges should know not only about court rules but the golden rule. How would the judge feel if such an offender living next to her if he offended against an 8 year old child of hers.

Outrage as attacker bailed next door

man found guilty of sexually abusing his neighbour’s granddaughter when she was 8 has been bailed to live at home – up a shared driveway and just 30m from where his victim lives – until sentencing in June.

His sentencing has been delayed until after a second trial next year in which he will stand accused of offending against another child.

The first victim, now 10, and her family see the man most days and say their Auckland home has become a prison and “an absolute hell” because of the judge’s decision.

The man, in his 70s, has name suppression. That was granted because he lives next door to the victim, who has automatic and permanent name secrecy due to the sexual nature of the charges.

The man was found guilty of two representative charges of sexual conduct with a child under 12 after a three-day trial.

Despite the verdict, Judge Anna Johns did not formally enter a conviction, and granted the man bail until sentencing.

Police said that at 8.20pm on Friday a passerby noticed three young boys on the roof of the school and called police to report it.

A police patrol went to the scene and found one of the boys had fallen through a skylight and was being attended to by his friends, who had forced entry into a school building to assist him.

A 12-year-old boy critically injured after falling through a skylight at a Palmerston North primary school has been transferred to Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland.

European cows have pumped out more than an extra two billion litres of milk since quotas were lifted seven months ago, putting pressure on global prices.

Rabobank analyst Emma Higgins said one of the flow-on impacts of the 2.8 per cent production hike would be to the Fonterra forecast farmgate milk payout, which stands at $4.60 per kilogram of milk solids.

“We’re now looking at next Christmas (2016) for the whole milk powder price to reach the US$3200 ($4782) figure.”

“It’s unlikely there will be much upside to pricing this season. The challenge is that the longer these low global prices continue, the more risk there is around the farmgate milk price. While a favourable exchange rate helps, it’s dependent on other factors,” Higgins said.

Walbran, a former head of the Australian International School in Jakarta, was jailed in Indonesia in 2012 and served two years of a three-year jail term for the rape and molestation of Indonesian boys, some under the age of 10.

He was deported to Australia in April 2014.

Investigators say Walbran failed to complete the registration process with Australia’s National Child Offender Register before leaving the country using a New Zealand passport.

Walbran travelled to Thailand earlier this year using his New Zealand passport, enabling him to avoid Australian travel alerts for convicted pedophiles.

However it does seem fibre optic should of developed and expanded on the same basis as cell and smart phone technology These were largely driven by marketing , promotion and demand .With of course an appropriate regularity mechanism promoting consumer choices..

No disrespect Labour MP Phil Goff – but what on earth is ‘inspiring’ about your policies, or more importantly, your proven track record as a pro-corporate ‘Rogernome’ – who helped inflict the neo-liberal Rogernomic$ agenda upon unsuspecting New Zealanders in the 1984 – 87 LABOUR Government?

Why would the 64% of Auckland voters – who didn’t bother back in 2013 – be inspired to vote for you as Auckland Mayor in 2016?

What underpinning ‘Rogernomic$’ legislative pillars did you or the Helen Clark led 1999 – 2008 Labour Government ever help to dismantle?

(Nothing personal here Phil – but FACTS are FACTS and TRUTH is TRUTH.)

Also – don’t forget that the Auckland Water Pressure which led public opposition to the hated Metrowater, was founded in Avondale, and with their support in the 2000 Auckland City Council Avondale -MT ROSKILL by-election in 2000, I polled 2nd, 700 votes behind Noelene Raffills, and over 4000 votes more than the City Vision (Labour / Alliance) candidate.

That was over fifteen years ago ….

So – in Phil Goff’s ‘home base’ Mt Roskill electorate – where he is very well known – so am I.

Is it wrong to enjoy igm’s and outpark’s rants? Their outbursts so conveniently predictable soon after 8am in general debate have become like the first coffee of the day to me – the perfect thing to start the day on a good note. I miss them if they are not there.

But then I was taught not to laugh at others misfortunes, so it’s hard not to feel guilty sometimes.

In my considered opinion – what we have in NZ ‘local’ government, particularly in Auckland, is effectively a private sector corporate takeover.

It is the multi-layered CONTRACTOCRACY – where private sector, ‘for profit’ consultants project manage ‘for profit’ ‘works contractors’, a number of whom then sub-contract to another layer of ‘for profit’ contractors – before you get down and dirty to the boots and overalls, who actually DO SOMETHING productive?

What on earth was ‘broken’ with in-house Council ‘Works Departments’?

Oh – that’s right.

The private sector couldn’t make private profit out of Council ‘Works Departments’.

Combined with the contracting out to the private sector of Council services services and regulatory functions, has been in influx (‘infestation’ ?) of private sector business people into what once was the public service ‘bureaucracy?

How on earth do private sector business people ‘transmogrify’ into competent public servants, dedicated to serving the public and the public interest?

In my view – they don’t.

They bring their private sector, private profit seeking ways, and business culture with them.

‘Make money and look after your business mates’?

In my view – the main ones who have benefited from Councils adopting the ‘business model’ – have been those businesses which have been awarded the contracts, and those business people who have been appointed to top jobs in the Council ‘bureaucracy’.

(This is not counting Auckland Council (Corporate) Controlled Organisations (CCOs) – which – in my view have been the mechanism for the corporate takeover of Auckland).

Well, Penny, you have a conflict of interest so you are unfit, Goff can’t decide whether he wants to be an MP or Mayor so he is unfit, and that sort of leaves Crone by default. Even without policies, experience and a track record I would vote for her over someone who refuses to confirm that she will not interfere in the legal action being taken by Council against her if elected Mayor. Corruption of that sort is unacceptable.

Hubby is flying the proposed new flag from our flag pole. He bought it from the Flag Committee website. Looks like he has made up his mind which flag He will vote for. I am undecided as yet, maybe still the existing flag?

Told my old parents about the new flag flying here and they have decided not to come for Christmas. Haha, I wish.

Obi-Wan knew the real ‘Force’. Alec Guinness was a Catholic.

Yet in his autobiography, Blessings in Disguise, Guinness highlights his conversion to the Catholic Church almost more than the success of his acting career.

At the age of sixteen, Guinness was confirmed in the Anglican faith, but he secretly declared himself an atheist. “Certain incidents or sayings in the New Testament,” he wrote, “would pluck me back, from time to time, to something approaching belief, and I retained a constant interest in religious matters while being ignorant of any theology, but for the most part gave in to adolescent cynicism.”

This “constant interest in religious matters” led the young Guinness to attend Presbyterian services for a time, but the attraction did not last. He wrote in his autobiography that it had never even crossed his mind to step inside a Catholic church. He said his “tolerance for Catholics, unless one personally knew them, was limited to the sympathetic, although condescending” view.

Guinness returned to the Anglican faith and often bicycled in the dark of winter mornings to receive communion in a country church. His friendship with Tomkinson had reduced his anti-clericalism but not his anti-Romanism. It took Father Brown to begin that process.

Father Brown is the drab and delightful Catholic priest invented by G. K. Chesterton. One of Guinness’s most memorable characterizations was of this humble, crime-solving cleric. The film was being shot in a remote French village. One evening Guinness, still in costume, was on his way back to his lodgings. A little boy, mistaking him for the real thing, grabbed his hand and trustingly accompanied the “priest.”

That incident affected Guinness. “Continuing my walk,” he said, “I reflected that a Church that could inspire such confidence in a child, making priests, even when unknown, so easily approachable, could not be as scheming or as creepy as so often made out. I began to shake off my long-taught, long-absorbed prejudices.”

Shortly thereafter, Guinness’s son Matthew, age eleven, was stricken with polio and paralyzed from the waist down. The future for the boy was doubtful, and at the end of each day’s work on the film, Guinness began dropping in at a little Catholic church on his route home. He decided to strike a bargain with God: If God would let Matthew recover, Guinness would not stand in the way if the boy wished to become Catholic.

Happily Matthew recovered completely, and Guinness and his wife enrolled him in a Jesuit academy. At the age of fifteen, Matthew announced that he wished to become Catholic. Guinness kept his end of the bargain with God: He readily agreed to the conversion.

But God wanted much more. Guinness began to study Catholicism. He had long talks with a Catholic priest. He made a retreat at a Trappist abbey. He even attended Mass with Grace Kelly while he was working on a film in Los Angeles. The doctrines of indulgences and infallibility slowed him for a time, but his description of finally entering the Church said it all: “There had been no emotional upheaval, no great insight, certainly no proper grasp of theological issues; just a sense of history and the fittingness of things.”

Guinness was received into the Catholic Church by the bishop of Portsmouth, and while he was in Sri Lanka making The Bridge over the River Kwai, his wife surprised him by also converting. As is often the case with new converts, he felt periods of deep peace punctuated by physical delight. He recounts once running like a madman to visit the Blessed Sacrament in a little nondescript church. Reflecting on that episode, he wrote, “If religion meant anything at all it meant that the whole man worshiped, mind and body alike . . . There was some reassurance when I discovered that the good, brilliant, acutely sane Ronald Knox had found himself running, on several occasions, to visit the Blessed Sacrament.”

I agree, who was that idiot woman and what exactly was the point of that to say that you saved 3 minutes on the new motorway at 11am. Is she an opponent of new roading.

No mention of the new by-pass saving traffic frustrating time spent in a bottle neck on a very steep hill into Cambridge, where the traffic was at a virtual standstill.

Can’t wait for the next motorway stage to be finished and sort out the traffic on the southern side of Hamilton. The traffic is only going to get heavier and the current roading system hasn’t been coping well for some time.

Fletch, I do acknowledge the nature of Star Wars as “escapist fantasy of the Saturday matinee ” kind .In that regard it’s not that bad and esoecially the first three..However think the franchise has milked the series to the hilt.Yet hard to stop producing a sure winner , but Sir Alec makes an intersting point just the same .

Of course the old route will be as almost as quick as the new bypass. BECAUSE MOST OF THE TRAFFIC IS NOW USING THE NEW ROAD, LEAVING LESS ON THE OLD ONE.

It has been agreed between the Auckland Transition Agency (ATA) and the recruitment company Momentum that Michelle Boag will withdraw from her involvement in recruiting two roles for the Auckland Council, ATA Executive Chairman Mark Ford said today (Thursday February 18).

“There has been recent political criticism of her involvement in the process. This is causing an unnecessary distraction and Momentum has accepted that Ms Boag standing aside is appropriate,” he said.

Mr Ford said that Momentum won the contract to recruit around 45 Auckland Council staff positions on the basis of a robust tender process. Their tender best met all the criteria in the ATA’s request for proposal and was the lowest price. Ms Boag was one of 12 Momentum employees identified in the proposal document.

Mr Ford is confident that the tender process is best practice and will stand up to any scrutiny.

As others have said, that Rachel Thomas story on Stuff about the Cambridge expressway has to be the dumbest piece of journalism in a long time.
The new road saves 3 minutes in only 16 kilometres. That is 29%. Imagine that saving extrapolated over a vastly longer distance if the road went all the way to Wellington.

Yes, there is nothing much wrong with the existing road, it was just clogged with traffic trying to negotiate State Highway 1 through a bottle neck. The dual carriageway is much needed.

Roll on 2018 when the next leg joining the Cambridge section with the rest of the Hamilton motorway system is finished.

We will have to keep the Liebor/Greens out of power or the rest of the roading schedule will be cancelled.

The February contract settled down 21 cents at $36.06 a barrel. Baker Hughes said oil rigs rose by 17, after four straight weeks of decline.

Both Phil Goff and Victoria Crone have leadership ability from their previous roles. Leadership ability is a key attribute for any aspiring Mayor. Penny has never lead any organisation either publicly or privately.
