The Herald on Sunday featured a story asking notable New Zealanders and Auckland Mayoral candidates what their vision for Auckland is and what Auckland mostly needs. Most respondents replied that a more efficient integrated public transport system was high on their wish list.
Penny Bright was not sought for her opinion.

Remember, IQ stands for “Intelligence Quotient” and is merely a mathematical formula that is supposed to be a measure of a person’s intelligence.

An IQ score is simply one’s score in an IQ test. There may be a strong correlation between IQ test scores and “intelligence,” but first you have to agree upon the meaning of the word “intelligence” (this word is just a symbol for the concept of intelligence, which we need to define).

Auckland does not have a ‘public’ transport system.

There are ten private bus companies, four private ferries and a French multinational operating and managing Auckland trains.

Auckland Transport will not disclose how many million$ of public monies are being used to subsidise Auckland’s privately owned / operated and managed passenger transport system.

(I know – because I’ve asked.)

If the private sector are so ‘efficient’ – why do they need public subsidies?

Why should the public subsidise that which we no longer own, operate or manage?

As an Auckland Mayoral candidate, I am totally opposed to ‘corporate welfare’.

In my view, public subsidy of private passenger transport services, without transparency or independent ‘cost-benefit’ analysis – is corporate welfare.

In my view, public transport should be provided ‘in house’ under the ‘public service’ model.

I would have thought that as a large property owner (and tenant in some cases I assume) it would be important for the council to keep abreast of developments; if membership of the Property Council helps with the information flow then it would be irresponsible of the Auckland Council not to belong.

Why should that be considered as a ‘conflict of interest’? Auckland Council one of the country’s largest commercial property owners, so why should it be precluded from participating in an organisation that brings together the collective voices of the commercial property sector?

Fair enough, that’s your view, and you’re entitled to propagate it as part of your your electioneering. What about housing, though? There you appear to have a completely different view. You defend stridently your private ownership of your home, while refusing to pay for more than seven years the universal rates charges levied by the same Auckland Council. Your private home is actually being subsidised by the same Auckland Council that you criticise for subsidising private transport operators.

You can’t have it both ways.

Oh Penny! I see there was a development in your defamation case on 10 March 2016. The judgement is here if anyone wants to read it.

Paragraph 19 of the judgment is interesting:

Ms Bright filed her statement of claim in December 2014. In it, she refers to her “watchdog role”, and states that her personal credibility, and public confidence in that credibility, are essential to her role.

I wonder if Keeping Stock agrees with that part of your statement of claim.

Penny, it’s blindingly obvious why you’re not asked for your ‘considered’ opinion.
It’s because your ‘considered’ opinion is total and utter nonsense.
Do you seriously want ratepayers’ money thrown at a bunch of bureaucrats running around in circles attempting to manage a ‘public’ transport system, instead of passing the risk to commercial operators who are actually experienced at what they do.
And yes, they will always need a subsidy because public transport is unprofitable the world over, but that subsidy will be minimised if the operators are working in a commercial environment rather than a money plughole which they would be if council staff were trying to do it.

What’s this ‘Easter Tuesday’ The private sector goes back to work tomorrow but some in the state sector have this ‘Easter Tuesday’ Another day the the Taxpayer has to pay for, on top of the three months plus holidays they have.
If this applies to students and teachers, then why not the rest of us?

Lots of schools are closed on the Tuesday after Easter, Steve. Schools have to open for a certain number of days each year, so schools that are open tomorrow would probably just close one day earlier before Christmas.

I read you link about Penny Bright not showing up for Court.

I have had a similar problem with my former lawyer who walked out of Court and refused to return even when called by the the registrar on his mobile. The judge quite rightly ruled in my favour. He has tried appealing but has been knocked back and is now up the the CoA. What pisses me off is that he is getting automatic few waiver because he claims he survives only on super.

I wonder if you or anyone else would know if Ms Bright is getting legal aid or fee waivers?

It is very hard to find these things out because a vexatious litigants right to privacy trumps the other party’s.

I just got a decision back from the new Ombudsman, Peter Boshier telling me that in my inquiry about his legal aid.

I assume that is not a flash one, but some broken down wreck of a place. I wonder also about her “Rental property (jointly owned), Waikato”. Hopefully that isn’t jointly owned by someone with the name of “Lee” or “Wong”. That combined with her “Apartment (jointly owned), Wellington” suggests she is quite the landlady (jointly of course). I love the stench of hypocrisy,

I don’t know whether your reference to “the last hearing” is an attempt to be tricky, Penny, but you definitely failed to appear at the 5 November 2015 hearing.

That pisses me off because the courts have a busy workload, and there you were fucking around with the judge and the other party, in a defamation case that you brought. Someone else missed out on their opportunity to have a case heard that day because of your childish behaviour.

Oh, and just to prove that you weren’t at the 5 November 2015 hearing, the 10 March 2016 judgment states that there was a hearing on 5 November 2015. It states “No appearance for the Plaintiff”. That would be you, Penny. So why would you make an apparently misleading and deceptive statement such as “I did not ‘fail’ to appear in Court at the last hearing of my defamation case”?

Donald Trump said he would be open to Japan and South Korea building nuclear weapons to deter North Korea, and would consider withdrawing troops from both American allies unless they paid more for their own defence.

Japan will have to overhaul its Constitution.

The times they are a-changing. Time for Japan to break the mental restraints of the legacy of WWII and grow up as a nation and assume responsibility for itself.

Japan could have operational nuclear weapons within 6 months, if they don’t already have them. The problem is, what use would they be other than for use in a Sampson Option?

Tokyo had better foster closer relations with South Korea and China (which they have been doing for some time).

My reading of above is those terrorists responsible for the Brussel’s outrage were recruits and highly likely receiving their instructions from ISIS H Q’ in Mosul .”Home”therefore means Iraq and the territories they have lost there .

So the Govt introduces a change to WINZ whereby if you have an active warrant for your arrest then your benefit gets cut.

Expect not if your a special person. 88 year old “war veteran” Clarke had an open war warrant for his part in the occupation and closure of Kaitaia airport a while ago and when his pension got cut instead of turning himself in he goes to the media and claims he has to beg for food.

So what does the Council do who own the airport do? Yep the Council cancels the warrant and he gets away Scott free

Down in Christchurch one of the armed home invasions over the weekend involved Special people and I suspect the second one in North Canterbury also involved another group. Could be wrong but they are creatures of habbit.

I don’t know much about the legal aid programme. Perhaps Penny can tell us if she’s received legal aid or fee waivers.

But you raise an interesting issue. I’ve just done a google search because I remember reading media reports that included details of legal aid applications. Here’s an example – the article refers to “a new legal aid application” which was apparently based on what the accused’s lawyer said in open court. And here’s another example – the article reports that Rod Petricevic was denied legal aid. Another example – Mark Lundy received a large helping of legal aid funding. And then the Opotiki five had “made” legal aid applications.

I think (but hopefully FE Smith and Alex Masterley are around and can comment) the position is that legal aid applications are a private matter between the applicant and the Legal Services Commissioner, but may become a public matter if it’s raised in open court.

I quite like the 1172 comments that I’ve achieved. It matches the cc capacity of the side-valve Ford Prefect of the early fifties. Not that it was a great car, but it was affordable at the time and pretty simple to fix. Not that I fixed one. I was too young, but I remember my father transplanting an 1172 into his 1946 Anglia when the original 933 gave up the ghost.

Thats why we did the transplant..had to do a lot of cutting and munting of the inside..if it didn’t work we would of just chucked it away. My mate at the time had a spare camaro engine from a wreck so we thought we would give it a go. Worked really well, had a jaguar diff in the arse and a 3 stage auto with a short shifter. Trouble was if you wanted to stop in a hurry you had to do a Flintstone. Ended up using it for grass track racing until my mate hit a tree and pushed the engine back into the cabin. Write off.

I remember being driven around Auckland as young fella ( y’all still would have been close to retirement at that stage though) in a mk2 cortina my cousin had cut up and shoved a 186 into. watching the road go past in the gaps around the firewall and transmission and thinking ‘this is the coolest shit ever’!

Also remember my Dad being disgusted at the marriage of Holden and Ford 😉

A ‘cure for cancer’ using yoga will be ready next year, Indian minister claims

A “cure for cancer” using yoga could be scientifically proven within a year, India’s alternative medicine minister has claimed.

Shripad Yasso Naik said researchers at a Bangalore institute had found evidence that yoga techniques could be used to prevent or arrest the disease.

“The institute has found a technique of yoga for the prevention and cure of cancer. They have proved it. The process uses only practising of special asanas [poses],” said Naik.

At a conference in Goa on Saturday, Naik said the technique could be prescribed within a year, once research documents submitted to the ministry had been verified, and could even replace chemotherapy.

This reminds me of an interview that Paul Holmes did years ago. He interviewed some people practising yoga. But these people took yoga from a recreational activity to a whole new level, because they were convinced that what they were doing (bouncing up and down on a mat from one end of the room to the other, then back again) was contributing to world peace. I wish I could find the interview on YouTube. You could see Paul trying so hard to keep a straight face.
