Yes, that example had occurred to me. Tell you what, Scott Chris – find me a mother/Mongrel Mob affiliate who is also a doctor or similar respected professional who has risen to the position they occupy by hard work and good life choices – just a single one will do – who, while juggling the responsibility of earning a living (a real and legal living, that is) with child care, inadvertently neglects her responsibilities because of the accumulation of those responsibilities…and I’d suggest you have a valid analogy.

In the meantime, yes, all parents who lose kids are entitled to sympathy. But not exoneration (the woman in the case to which you refer was convicted of the crime) and they most certainly earn opprobrium if the circumstances were foolish and avoidable, with the level of opprobrium matching the level of foolishness and avoid-ability, whether it is a baby inadvertently left in a hot car, or a kid killed by a sawn-off…loaded…shot-gun. That’s how some of us learn, either the hard way…or observing and reflecting on the mistakes of others. That you seem incapable of holding those two – sympathy and opprobrium – in tension is your problem, not others.

Perhaps an over-worked Pacific Island parent, who, after working a night-shift cleaning (which is her second job), accidentally rolls on his kid laying next to him on the couch because he dozed off would be a better analogy. And yes, I know of a case like that…and yes, they would have my sympathy. But then when it comes to lifting the general level of intelligence to make life safer for kids, or giving sympathy…well, let’s just say sympathy is hugely-over-rated, and the only place you really find it is in the dictionary between ‘shit’ and ‘syphilis’.

How many commenting on the toddler being shot also commented on the Japanese boy left by his parents. Given the accuracy of some of those statements I’d have thought there would be less speculation in this case. But no that’s not the case, although I can’t say I’m surprised by that fact.

My point is that Hillary and her backers really should focus on other angles of attack on Trump, because saying that he’s a liar rebounds too easily on her and makes little headway in a world where politicians are accepted as lying more than ever before.

By contrast, the Hillary campaign should probably be reaching out to Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks:

“I think he’s good at real estate; I do give him a lot of credit there. I think he’s good at branding real estate,” he said. “I don’t think he’s very good at brands for non–real estate products. And, to me, it’s more a reflection of desperation.

“So when you’re putting your name on steaks, and you’re putting your name on water, you’re putting your name on playing cards, you’re putting your name on all this nonsense, right? THUD – right in the guts.! As a right-wing commentator noted:

Traditional politicians tend to come off weak against Trump, either because they’re viewed as comparatively inauthentic (Cruz) or as comparatively beta (Bush). Hillary has both problems. Cuban has neither of them.

His media reach isn’t as long as Trump’s — no one’s is — but it’s plenty long thanks to “Shark Tank.” That show does for his image what “The Apprentice” has done for Trump’s, showing him off as the wildly successful alpha-male rich guy who got where he is by telling losers to their faces that they’re losers. (That’s sort of what Cuban’s doing in the clips below to Trump, in fact.)

He always had a reputation for candor in interviews, sometimes to a fault, but “Shark Tank” enhanced that by giving him a visible platform to be brutally frank with fledgling business owners, which gives him a Trumpian air of authenticity. And beyond all that, like Trump himself, the guy’s just a plain good talker. The media loves him because he delivers quality soundbites.

Like the one above. As the commentator goes on to say:

It’s one thing to call him a con artist, it’s another to suggest that he’s not as alpha as he claims. That hits him where he lives.

I think this line of attack from Clinton shows more promise:

Donald Trump’s ideas aren’t just different; they are dangerously incoherent. They’re not even really ideas, just a series of bizarre rants, personal feuds, and outright lies. He is not just unprepared, he is temperamentally unfit to hold an office that requires knowledge, stability, and immense responsibility. Well you’re a smart guy Kimbo, and intelligent people can easily rationalise nearly any position. Whatever extenuating circumstances you can find to excuse the doctor I suspect I could compose an equally compelling sob story to explain why the Mongrel Mob mother came to be where she hypothetically is. Just remember the 2 year old abuse victims who aren’t killed and therefore don’t garner our immediate sympathy inevitably grow up to become adults.

It’s a good argument but I think Trump can counter it and it smacks of “intellectualism”. In any case he can simply point at Hillary’s votes for the Iraq War and her full-blown support for getting rid of Gadaffi and ask why she has any credibility on the issue of getting the US into wars.

With Trump the secret is to go after him the way he goes after others: find the personal weak spot and just keep fucking hammering it. His weak spot is his alpha-male schtick. It’ll drive him crazy if she comes at it from several different angles, preferably via surrogates, but she and her team should be able to test out some titles for him. Unfortunately her team seems to be as useless as she is at running a campaign; you’ve seen her adverts? Jeez).

Perhaps people here could Help Hillary by developing some titles in the style of The Donald’s – “Lyin Ted”, “Little Marco”, “Crooked Hillary” – that last one is typical sound-bite brilliance from Trump.

Strangely the way the Serco debate goes on it seems like Labour would be a better government at running private prisons and a worse one at running public prisons.

I say that because of how our adversarial system seems to leave the government wanting public prisons to make errors and running cover for Serco by trying to lower the standards they are held to, while the Labour opposition does the complete opposite wanting to hold private prisons to very high standards and not being concerned about public ones.

@Kimbo. I’m glad you clarified your earlier position, which seemed heartless to me — not caring about a gun accident no matter who.

Of course it’s much easier for me. I make no pretence at loving mankind or being consistent. Some people I care about and >7,000,000,000 I don’t.

I have a firearms licence, and it is beyond my comprehension how anyone can leave a loaded gun anywhere, over a period of time during which they were probably doing nothing much.

On the other hand, I can understand how a busy and preoccupied mother might momentarily forget a child and walk off to begin an operating list. To me, that was a tragedy.

The other, I keep my opinion to myself.

Greetings tax dodgers and trendsetters as Starbored would say. Back from a huge wedding in Gili Trawangan, one of the three islands just off Lombok. The wedding was at Pondok Santi, a resort owned by AJ Hackett who i met a couple of times, such a lovely and humble bloke. At a guess, i would imagine the resort would be over 5 acres in size, just brilliant.
Big party after the wedding stretching over three days and three nights which had this ole fella in the sack by 2am on the first night.
I reckon i had just as much fun in Gili Trawangan as Starboard had in Bangkok in a different way without the happy endings !~

I think you are forgetting Kimbo, that the victim is a 2 year old child. So it’s not just about the family. It is an innocent child, theoretically capable of great things in their lives, especially according to the capitalist ethos of “equal opportunity for everyone, regardless of background” Such finesse is completely lost on the racist, thick muppets on this blog though that can only classify their sympathy according to whether they deem someone to be ‘feral’ or not.

Dear itstricky I see that you did not like my comments above.

You are right these things can happen in an instant, but one thing I can assure you of, it would not happen in my household, neither has it ever.

I have had multiple firearms in our home for many many years, and during all that time we raised 3 children all of whom have grown and flown.

Not once were our children at risk of an “accidental” discharge from a firearm, because I followed the rules, and our children learnt the rules and grew up responsible firearm users.

Yes my comment was pointed, but I really make no apology for that….sawn off in house discharged tragically killing child…hello, anyone home.

Add….yes I came across as stereotyping the situation, I actually regret that, my only rational is my attitude is shaped by frustration.

I’m sure he’s been a Bernie supporter, but it’s not the first time he’s gone Democrat, it’s just funny that he’s not encouraging people to go outside the two party system and that class warfare beats everything else. I’ll put that down to the usual Far Left mendacity rather than stupidity, since Maduro’s currently slow-walking a referendum signed by about two million people telling him to fuck off now rather than hanging on for an election in two years time.

But perhaps that will be a trigger for the US MSM to ask Bernie what’s gone wrong in Venezuela and how his policies are different and would work in the USA. The only one that’s asked him to date was Univision and he deflected by saying he was running for President of the US. Sure, Bernie, sure. Probably counter-revolutionary forces anyway, amiright?

Fine. I would suggest you got lucky. I was a pasty townie introduced to Paparoa farm-life at 16 through a school friend. I accidentally discharged a shotgun whilst climbing over a fence on my second duck shooting weekend. But shit happens? Maybe, the gun coulda gone off in any direction. I’m still here suckers. 🙂

The man was/is an irresponsible brainless, probably spaced out excuse for a human.

many years ago my in laws house was broken into, and the old boys gun cupboard was broken into..long story short, my double barrel was stolen, presented to a constable as he investigated, offender escaped.

The next time my beloved Shottie was seen was when it was found as a sawnoff presented at a fast food restaurant, and the offenders caught. (Thanks to some grand police work)

So I know a bit about shitheads, and what sawn offs are actually used for.
