So refreshing from one of those in the Brexit moaning generation that wants to deny those older people from having a vote, one who recognises that perhaps a grey hair or two (or more in my instance) does not equal senility.

‘On the streets of Lincoln in Canterbury, Dunsandel apprentice electrician Michael Wallace, 25, is not impressed with Labour leader Andrew Little. Asked to describe Little in one word he opts for “useless”. Labour’s new policy of three years’ free tertiary education or training has apparently failed to win him over. “He’s not ready to be Prime Minister, not good enough. John Key’s still the man.”

Lincoln is in the safe National seat of Selwyn. But on paper, Wallace, a young apprentice in training for a trade, should be a Labour voter. He has at least heard of Little. Mother and daughter Julie and Jessica Beer’s one word description for Little is “who?”.

In Otara, part of the safe Labour seat of Manukau East, Little gets a better reception. One man uses the word “prosperity” to describe him. Another says “awesome”. But one man says he “needs to pull his socks up”; another has no idea who he is.’

It gets better: ‘Part of that is familiarity. Little is yet to embark on his full charm offensive of the nation, so people are still operating on first impressions based on soundbites on the news.’

And what article would not be complete without sage advice from a dyed in the wool red: ‘Former British MP Bryan Gould says Little is a “good, competent, decent sort of leader” ‘

The man has no charm, wit or presence; he has had a personality bypass, is totally ineffective and obviously the best man to be leading the labour party into the oblivion abyss.

Perhaps we can all post one word like the electrician in the article to describe Little; an apt word that we consider to describe Angry Littles persona, abilities, fitness for office, etc; I will start with vacuous.

I know who he is, I believe I know what he stands for; I believe I have a good measure of the man as a whole and can see no redeeming features that would make me believe in his (or his minions) vision for New Zealand.

I do hope he remains the leader of the labour party for at least as long as the odious Winston has held his crown.

OK, Homelessness:

Why do people end up homeless?

A. Individuals.
B. Families.

Let’s start with individuals:

1. Estrangement from family support.
2. Chronic alcoholism.
3. Terminal drug addiction.
4. Preference.
5. Mental illness.
6. Inadequate support after jail release.
7. A combination of 1-6 above.

And now families:

1. Family dysfunction.
2. Blacklisted by landlords due to damage, unpaid rent etc.
3. Blacklisted by WINZ due to attitude and/or 2 (above).
4. History of P labs or P smoking in tenanted houses.
5. Chronic alcoholism.
6. Terminal drug addiction.
7. A combination of 1-6 above.

The NZ social welfare network provides almost endless safety nets for those who fall on hard times. Nobody should be falling through the cracks unless they are very determined to do so.

Homelessness is a worldwide problem and will be with us forever. There’s no point in the opposition continuing to blame it on John Key, because if they ever get the chance to be in his position (and let’s hope they never do) they won’t have the answers either.

What might help however, is if the media in their breathless interviews of people living in cars, were to actually ask those people how and why they got into that situation.

And if the solution is a free, dry and comfortable taxpayer-funded flophouse for them to live in, how do we stop that from being the default position for anyone who finds normal life too much of a challenge?

People in the area that I was brought up know me, respect me and know what I stand for is what i believe in says Andrew Little.Well Andrew anyone can sing their own praise’s but there is only one problem when them people don’t want you as their MP that does not result in votes and you have lost the safe Labour seat in the New Plymouth electret twice,so I would suggest believing and respect does not make you a choice for Prime Minister of NZ

I see in the NBR, and I am not going to link to the article as it is behind the pay wall, an article on Penny Bright’s appeal.
It appears to have been an application for leave to appeal rather than the substantive appeal and it was all over inside an hour. I suspect given the brevity of the hearing that Penny’s application for leave may well be denied and the Council will be able to enforce its judgement.
The judgement should be available within the next week so that will be interesting reading.

The one good thing that T U Little said this morning is that housing is a nationwide crisis.

Why is that good news?

Because every time labour declares a crisis the target turns out record performances.

I suspect Penny will appeal the decision to decline leave. She will then seek orders recalling the decision(s). There will be token orders for costs (has Siemer ever complied with any single order as to costs?) and, again, the justice system will be seen by some as an instrument of oppression and by others as a toothless laughing stock.

I wholly support the right of access to the courts but not as part of a political game which is costing taxpayers, ratepayers and others with more pressing priorities.

Today is July 5th, 2016. I will remember this day for the rest of my life as one the saddest days in American history. Today FBI Director James Comey told over 7.125 billion people and me that his department and he unquestionably believe that the American public are the most stupid people on the face of this planet.

Today Comey addressed the nation and the world, when he began his speech early this morning by saying, “Good morning. I’m here to give you an update on the FBI’s investigation of Secretary Clinton’s use of a personal e-mail system during her time as Secretary of State. Disgustingly, Comey continued his speech propounding one ridiculous lie after another.

Secretary Clinton used several different servers and administrators of those servers during her four years at the State Department, and used numerous mobile devices to view and send e-mail on that personal domain. As new servers and equipment were employed, older servers were taken out of service, stored, and decommissioned in various ways…

…Although many businesses with deep pockets often replace servers for depreciation purposes every four years, servers often last 10-15 years before the server’s hard drives that store information fail. It is unheard of for someone to replace an email server ‘several’ times in 4 years…

…Additionally, Clinton’s email server was reported by CNN to be wiped clean (hard drives wiped to destroy all data) when it was delivered to the U.S. Justice department…

…Comey propounded the most asinine statement of his whole speech this morning, stating that,

“The lawyers doing the sorting for Secretary Clinton in 2014 did not individually read the content of all of her e-mails, as we did for those available to us; instead, they relied on header information and used search terms to try to find all work-related e-mails among the reportedly more than 60,000 total e-mails remaining on Secretary Clinton’s personal system in 2014.

It is highly likely their search terms missed some work-related e-mails, and that we later found them, for example, in the mailboxes of other officials or in the slack space of a server.

It is also likely that there are other work-related e-mails that they did not produce to State and that we did not find elsewhere, and that are now gone because they deleted all e-mails they did not return to State, and the lawyers cleaned their devices in such a way as to preclude complete forensic recovery.

We have conducted interviews and done technical examination to attempt to understand how that sorting was done by her attorneys. Although we do not have complete visibility because we are not able to fully reconstruct the electronic record of that sorting, we believe our investigation has been sufficient to give us reasonable confidence there was no intentional misconduct in connection with that sorting effort…”

Folks do you believe for even one second that any law enforcement agency would find nothing wrong with a group of lawyers picking and choosing what evidence to hand over to law enforcement officials in a criminal investigation and then attempting to destroy any hint of the remaining evidence by wiping the hard drives of a server clean? [A server used by a suspect that was caught red handed on several occasions committing perjury concerning the matter under investigation.]

Do you actually believe that any law enforcement agency affords any suspects lawyers, regardless of who they are, five months to hide incriminating evidence in a legitimate criminal investigation?

In my professional opinion as a retired prosecutor, if in fact law enforcement officials conducted investigations in the manner Comey described in his statement this morning, we would have no need for prisons and courts; no one would ever be tried and or punished for criminal acts.

Folks, no FBI agent and or prosecutor, unless they were suffering from acute mental illness, would allow a suspect in a criminal investigation to retain possession of potential evidence in a criminal investigation – certainly not for five months.

Additionally, when Clinton’s lawyers deleted emails that were part of computer data evidence subpoenaed by the Justice department from Hillary’s server or servers, they committed at least three different felony offenses, including obstruction of justice…

is it just me or is Mark Sainsbury quite painful to listen too, he doesnt seem able to carry a train of thought beyond 45 seconds like he suffers from adult ADHD, and he is surprisingly ill informed which may come about from not being able to process information from the frontal lobe which is another symptom. I gave up on the RadioLive mornings after a month of him and then dumped the whole station, if you are going to suffer talkback at least let it challenge you occaisionally.
I quite enjoy the Paul Henry show but Sainsbury filling in and interviewing Little had me scrambling for the off switch before my day was ruined.

What exactly are we trying to prove by posting examples of Muslims committing terrorist or criminal acts in other countries?

Some Muslims are very bad people – as with all groups. Some Muslims do very bad things – as with all groups. Muslims who do bad things should be caught and punished for the bad things they have done – as with all groups.

Can we perhaps move on?

To me it is like a smartly suited one, having made an eloquent statement, then going into puerile mode, poking his tongue out yelling “na na na na na”, giving the fingers and pulling pants down and mooning the world. I really wonder sometimes about maori culture.

There has been some controversy about a Mob member running programmes in prison and has now been stopped. (His name is Nui I think)

The Minister comes out and says that similar programmes have resulted in INCREASED re-offending and thus there is nothing positive about the sort of programme this guy was running.

And then we hear Tariana Turia claiming that Minister is wrong because she refused to sit in the second row at some reception and the ministers lack of respect for Maori culture is the reason why she is wrong.

WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP TURIA IS TALKING. There should be more respect for the office of the minister – who should be always at the front – female or not. In fact Maori in general would make a greater contribution to society if they stopped all this rubbish about their culture (its a violent culture – caused by the origin of the haka) and paid a bit more attention to respecting the rule of law.
And all this during maori language week – what an embarrassment they are to the world.

There was much bitching and moaning about the brevity of the sentences imposed on the killers of young Moko. But any leniency from the courts for them pales into insignificance with Judge Thokozile Masipa swallowing hook, line and sinker the plea in mitigation on behalf of the legless muderer Oscar Pistorius.

If it wasn’t bad enough Judge Masipa having her culpable homicide verdict overturned by South Africa’s Supreme Court, she got to sentence him a second time and could only add a year to her sentence for the lesser offence. Six years for a cold-blooded murder (and they are already saying he’ll be out in three) is both inexplicable, and a sick joke.

Maybe our own justice system isn’t so bad after all; by comparison, at least.

The original estimates of Al-Qaeda’s strength was 500 or so committed troops. Attacking them was the original justification for the war on terror.
The collateral damage from this “war” is horrific. Two million or more Muslims are dead as a result of the war in terror.
It is actually a war of terror for civilians in those country’s were it is being waged.
We now have over 15,000 committed to ISIS who have taken over the banner of Muslim extremism in regions destabilized by the war on terror. They have recruited these numbers from among those who have had their life’s destroyed by western aggression.
The nett result of the war on terror is only more terror for all of us.

So now we have the Greens complaining about Black Power Member being dismissed at a Taranaki Prison and the petition demanding that the Government apologise for gays being charged with Homosexual offence’s thirty years ago.I know if our family had someone in prison we would not like a patched gang member mentoring them and Judith Collins is right to make sure that should not happen in any of our penal Institutes.How can any member of parliament make a oppoligy to people that have these offence’s when quite a lot of them were committed with people under the age of sixteen and to my knowledge is still a offence.So if these are policy’s from the Labour / Greens marriage of convenience God help NZ

In many ways, Warsaw will be a sequel to Wales.

Two years ago, NATO was in emergency mode. Today it is planning for a long and tense conflict.

Two years ago, the Atlantic alliance went back to basics, refocusing on its core mission of defending its members. Today it is methodically putting the pieces in place to contain and deter an increasingly revanchist Russia.

The last time NATO heads of state gathered, in Newport, Wales back in September 2014, the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in eastern Ukraine were only months old, and Russia’s aggressive stance toward the West was just taking shape.

“Hybrid war” was still a fresh term that everybody was scrambling to understand.

If Wales 2014 was about an immediate response to a crisis, the alliance’s summit this week in Warsaw will be about building the stable and sturdy security architecture for a long-term standoff with Moscow.

Decisions made in the Polish capital on July 8-9, alliance officials say, will resonate for decades to come.

This is exactly what was recognised when England first introduced ‘poor laws’. These envisaged such ‘flophouses’ but conditions and operating rules were designed such that people would only go there as a last resort. The operators were pretty cunning. For example while someone was theoretically free to leave the premises, they could not in practice as the clothes they had to wear belonged to the flophouse and if taken off the premises the person would be charged with theft. These places were called something else, not ‘flophouses’. One such place was so substantially built that it still exists today although it has long since been converted to offices.

You make some very perceptive comments. I agree entirely with the suggestion that there will be appeal after judicial review after appeal with the whole proceeding against Penny Bright becoming a procedural morass.
This procedural rubbish does clog up the system. It could be said that one of the commenters on the NBR article is well versed in the dark arts of procedural litigation bullshit (but not by me).

So there is a co-ordinated Islamic publicity campaign designed to influence NZ’s immigration and refugee policy. The propaganda comes in waves.

Of course people have more empathy for similar people – and in NZ’s case that is chiefly Westerners. Think of the ISIL extremists butchering Christians but sparing Muslims, and enslaving Kurdish Yazidi women but sparing Muslim women.

Yes of course I know that’s the point WG. However given your second sentence I wonder how much you know of the powerful role learned helplessness plays in the lives of many long term unemployed. It sits like a heavy fog in the minds of many. Because humans of working age are not designed to be idle 24/7/365 there are psychological consequences of that and learned helplessness is one of them.

Yes indeed there are some amongst those ranks who deliberately seek a life of what they perceive to be leisure but those are not as prolific as many of you here seem to think. If one experiences rejection after rejection how long can one keep that up? The answer varies depending who you are but many of us would become disheartened after 10-20 in a row and that in turn would show through as we showed up for yet another and that’s what happens to many of these people. So it becomes a vicious cycle. And then the time period becomes a factor and the employer begins to wonder about the gap and that adds another factor.

We don’t know how many of these type there are and how many of the truly lazy there are because no-one does the research or if they do it’s not published/publicised.

Which is a great shame because if that was a well known, well researched, widely discussed phenomena then perhaps the stigma of someone whose been out of work for months or years would be managed by the employer in a more effective way, if they were cognisant of that being a possible factor, during the interview.

I don’t base my belief that Russia is a threat on the MSM & Politicians. I base it on the historical record of how Russia typically acts. The MSM just informs as to what is happening, and that is backed up everywhere except for places like Veteran’s Today who try to blame everything that is wrong in the world on the United States. Reigning politicians, who do have access to intelligence reports, probably have more of clue than you do as to what is going on.

New Zealand does indeed take refugees as recommended by the UNHCR, mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, but some from the Middle East and other places too. I believe that the UNHCR prioritises by humanitarian need, although that must be very difficult with only thousands of places available for millions of refugees. Of the refugees from the Middle East, one should expect that most of them will be Muslims, are they comprise the overwhelming majority of the refugees.

Well the historical record shows Russia acts defensively not offensively so why do you then pretend it’s the opposite?

They say one thing and do the other. During WWII when they jointly invaded Poland with Germany, the excuse was to save the Polish people. Complete load of crap, but then some people will believe crap.

Same with Ukraine in 2014 – it was offence badly disguised as defence.

Many countries will use the defence excuse when acting offensively. Haven’t you noticed?

Funny isn’t it that virtually all the refugees and other gate crashers around the world are all either Muslims, Black Africans or other assorted indigenous groups.
Suggests to me that these groups are totally incapable of ruling themselves and in hindsight it was a massive mistake by the powers to have given them the chance.
Good example of reality and romantic ideals being miles apart in practice.

That Muslims commit terrorist acts and criminal acts at an alarming rate, and this needs to be discuseed.

I completely agree that some Muslims commit terrorist acts and criminal acts. I would like to know what you would define as an “alarming” rate. How does it compare, for example, to criminal acts committed by members of other faiths, or of no faith at all?

No. Sweeping the issue under the carpet may be conveniant for you, but it’s not for those of us who care about NZ and the West.

If you are unhappy with that, perhaps you can move on, to another blog.

I am not sweeping it under the carpet. I have repeatedly stated, and I do so again above, that I agree that some Muslims are bad people and some of them do bad things.

However, this is insufficient to make the case that all Muslims should be discriminated against, meaning that our long held and hard fought rights and freedoms should be abandoned (just as Islamic terrorists wish). That is the discussion that I would like to move on to.

Are you similarly prepared to stipulate that some Muslims are good people and that many of them are victims of Islamic terrorism?

Are you prepared to state why you attach so little value to freedom of speech, freedom of conscience and the principle that people should be judged and treated on the basis of what they do, not what on others think they might do?

You need to grow up Reid, move past that late teen / early 20’s young man who easily believed everything that was told to him back then. Since then you have had access to far more information, especially since the fall of the Soviet Union from countries that were behind the Iron Curtain and can add more to the story than just the one-sided crap you were fed at university in the 80’s.

Clearly Lucia. I mean just look at you. There’s no point in engaging with you on this because you’re a fanatic in Churchill’s definition and discussing historical and geopolitical facts with you is therefore a waste of time.

Over the years I’ve worked with lots of programmers and I’ve found in many of them a certain binary pattern which makes them good programmers but poor at certain other aspects of thought processing such as lateral thinking and seeing there is always more than one side to a situation.

Hope that helps but know it won’t be incorporated because it would break your binary pattern.

Over the years I’ve worked with lots of programmers and I’ve found in many of them a certain binary pattern which makes them good programmers but poor at certain other aspects of thought processing such as lateral thinking and seeing there is always more than one side to a situation.

The people that know me personally outside of blog world would strongly disagree with you. I am a superb lateral thinker, and have no problems seeing multiple sides of things. My intelligence is broad, rather than focused. You just get to see the results of my thinking – not the process I go through. But, I can understand why you are saying this – it’s makes it easier for you to dismiss my point of view.

Rather a lot it seems. Way more than just some.

No, given the literally hundreds, if not thousands, of examples of both terrorism and sexual assaults, especially by recent Muslim immigrants, it is very sufficient.

Let’s take a hypothetical. Ten men want to come and live in your home, with your family. You know for a fact that 2 or three of these men are serial killers, but you have no way of knowing which ones. Do you invite them in, or say no thanks?

What Islamic terrorists want is our submission to Islam. Us banning Islamic immigration is not their goal.

Absolutely. But refer to my hypothetical as to why I think this is irrelevant.

How long do you think those freedoms will last if we keep importing millions of Muslims into the West? We are already seeing those freedoms eroded in the name of multiculturalism.

As was pointed out yesterday, two of my sources for Islamic issues, Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller, were banned from entering Britain because they say things multiculturalists don’t like. Their freedom of expression, and the freedom of those British people who may have wanted to hear them speak in person, was annulled.

And Albert, that freedom was taken from them because Britain has imported so many Muslims that the authorities are terrified of offending them.

And UK Labour and the British police tried to cover up the sexual abuse of hundreds of young British girls, again, for fear of offending the Muslims they have allowed to immigrate to the UK.

It is normal practice that in a time of war certain freedoms may have to be temporarily suspended. In WW2 the allies did not allow immigration from Japan or Germany. I see no difference between that and my suggestion.
