MPI admits fish dumping widespread

The Ministry for Primary Industries has admitted that illegal fish dumping is so widespread that if the rules were properly enforced over half of inshore fishers would go out of business.

MPI is there to enforce the rules.
The fact that they admit they dont because it will negatively effect the industry shows blatant capture of the enforces by those they are supposed to enforce the rules upon.
Heads should roll from the top down within MPI and the industry should be forced to obey the rules set out by government.
The resource belongs to the whole country not just a few fishing company’s. Quota is a license to take some of the resource not a license to steel from the rest of us .

Listening to Red Radio and Soosie interview Tolley this morning made it clear who MP’s listen to.
We vote in our MP’s to rerpresent us , or used too. If one can read behind the front, Tolleys’ interview exposes how MP’s actually represent the UN.
While this was about the Vulnerable Children legislation the questioning from Soozie made it sound as though she was working on behalf of the UN. Well Soozie you ain’t.
The sooner we elect some MP’s that can see through this UN agenda and tell the UN to get lost the sooner we will get our country back.
The UN influence on so much of our legislation is dragging us into a third world hole.
Worst part is National and Labour along with the Greens and Maori Party are all captured by this plan.

        Andrei certainly has a tendency to overstate his case. He might be able to put forward a convincing argument of bias if he could show that every single Russian application for TUE was declined or that there was no medical evidence to support exemptions granted to Western athletes. Cherry picking facts and then over egging them to the point they become different facts altogether is a sure way of illustrating that an argument has no substance.

        That is an allegation based entirely upon the testimony of people who have fallen afoul of the Russian Drug testing authorities that has yet to be tested in a court of law KS
        
        And it is certain that clean athletes did not get the opportunity to compete and in some cases defend their titles at Rio because of these allegations
        
        Furthermore I remember back in Beijing Olympics where a Russian gymnast who had a cold and had been treated with a nasal spray by the team doctor without thinking got disqualified
        
        And if you are not suspicious of the number of elite British swimmers and cyclists, including medalists who claim to be asthmatic then you are incredibly naive.

        There is a question mark over the GB cycling team.
        GB were here in Cambridge, NZ last year and a bit ordinary. They have been ‘ordinary’ in the main races in South America and Europe in recent years.
        
        I would question GB’s ‘occasional prowess every 4 years’.

Obviously I need a history lesson. Years ago pre European did Maori long line fish or drag net in the Kermadec Trench ?

I find it hard to believe that they had the capability except to pull fish up on bone hooks attached to short lengths of flax cord and dragging nets across tidal mud flats.

By all means give them fishing rights but restrict them to their traditional methods.

I have this vision of corporate Maori fat cats wearing dark suits and shades rocking up in BMWs to count their deep sea quota.

    Albert Ross there is no evidence that maori even knew of the existence of the kermadecs let along had any right’s over the islands or fishery’s in the region at the point of European contact.
    The kermadecs are one of the few places in the world were terra nullius truly applies.

      There is evidence of Mayor Island obsidian on the Kermadecs. (i.e. a NZ source)
      There are occupation sites on Raoul.
      There are Pacific Is plant cultivars on Raoul and the Polynesian rat that didn’t get there by themselves and weren’t brought by the first Europeans to visit.
      
      The general consensus nowadays is that the Kermadecs were occupied sometime prior to European discovery and there were visits, at least, from NZ-based canoes.

        I am well aware of the finding of mayor island obsidian and it evidence of return voyaging by early maori .
        At the point of contact they did not even know of the islands existence.
        When Cook arrived Maori no longer had the ability or required technology to voyage outside of the sight of land.
        This is also why the Chatham islands population was isolated for century’s long enough to develop a separate culture to the mainland.
        The bell family inhabited the islands at one stage in our early history decedents may have a claim.
        Maori have no right over an island chain they did not even know was there .

        with evidence of dog , petrel, fish, and seal bones.
        
        Adzes have been found on the northern side of the island.

      The fact is that a Treaty settlement was agreed and concluded and as a result Maori legally acquired the right to fish around the Kermadecs.
      
      Once you have legally acquired a right, it is not OK for the Government to take it away from you without compensation. It doesn’t matter if you’re not using it. It doesn’t matter if some people think they could make better use of it. It is your property and that means you get to decide what to do with it.

        They have never taken fish in the Kermadecs to help fill that quota…

  Rightly or wrongly, our government made a deal transferring fishing rights to Maori. People should honour their agreements.
  
  It’s irrelevant whether Maori lived there or fished there in the past. The government kept 90% of the quota for areas Maori definitely did fish and in return gave them 10% of the overall quota, including areas they never fished. That was the deal.

    Key is attempting to do a ‘Helen foreshore refusal’. National have a poor track record of buckling to any Maori demands, much more so than during Clark’s tenure.
    
    There is no end to where the early Maori fellas hung out, so maybe parts of Hawaii or New Caledonia are worth a Treaty $laim.

        But there is evidence that Maori came from Taiwan as DNA from the Ggao Shan Zhu tribe are the same as Maori we know of today.
        So sometime they travelled the whole of the South Pacific over thousands of years from island to island and more recently from Rarotonga, where even the language is similar to the Maori spoken today (by those few who maintain they can speak Maori).

    The fishing quota system was set up in 1986. In 1989 the Crown transferred 10 per cent of the quota together with shareholdings in fishing companies and $50 million cash to the Waitangi Fisheries Commission.
    
    In 1992, a second part of the deal marked final settlement of Maori commercial fishing claims under the Treaty of Waitangi. This included 50 per cent of Sealord Fisheries and 20 per cent of new species brought under the quota system, more shares in fishing companies, and $18 million cash.
    
    New Zealand can change the quota system. Quotas aren’t Moses’s tablets of law. This is a fisheries management system, not a system to administer or maintain race-based rights.
    
    Beyond that, it is relevant that before the Treaty of Waitangi Maori did not have the technology to fish around the Kermadecs for consumption in New Zealand. If Maori visited they did not settle. Surely that means they have no more legitimate claim to the Kermadecs than they have to Norfolk Island or Lord Howe Island.
    
    This row is about tribes trying to grab more resources from the rest of the country.

  The Maori learned the use of nets from the “Patu-paiarehe” or Turehu who lived here in NZ before them. There is a story about a Maori who was out on the beach one day before dawn and saw “little people” dragging on something (which turned out to be nets). It was still before sunrise and so he joined them in pulling in the nets with fish. When it got light enough they saw he was not one of them and ran off, leaving their nets. It was from this that the Maori learned how to use a net to fish with.

Aussie banks lying by omission on your kiwi saver accounts.
KiwiSavers in dark over full fee figures.

Many KiwiSavers are in the dark over the individual costs to manage their money because most providers don’t give the full dollar figure in annual member statements.

KiwiSaver providers are required to send out an annual statement to members which typically show a person’s account balance, contributions, annual member fee and tax paid.

But analysis of statements for the eight largest KiwiSaver providers show just two – ASB and Kiwi Wealth – revealed the full dollar costs.

The other six providers – ANZ, AMP, Westpac, Fisher Funds, Mercer and SuperLife – disclosed member fees which ranged between $21 and $33 a year and AMP also disclosed a separate dollar amount for its admin fee.

But exactly how much individuals are paying for other fees is not made clear on the annual member statements – and those other fees are substantial.

Collectively the six providers declared $56.2 million in their annual member statements but left out $148.2m in other fees just for the year to March 31, 2016 alone.

  The comments are an interesting read, most are against letting her stay and the ones who want her to remain are bleeding hearts about it. Simple you know the terms of your visa and if you break them then I am sorry you have to leave. I do not believe 45k is an onerous amount to earn as then you are contributing to NZ in a meaningful way, she failed to do this so should leave.

  I have plenty of experience with Child Support Chuck, having paid out close to $100k over a 16-year period.
  
  But I am always sceptical about people who run to the newspapers with their story about being hard done by, because there is almost always something that the newspaper is either not told, or elects no to publish.

      In general, you have to be quite a criminal in order not to get shared custody of kids on a 50-50 basis – at least nowadays .As for taking kids overseas, it is quite simple to put a block on a passport with DIA in similar circumstances unless written approval by the other party agreeing to it.

  I had a look at the exam.
  It’s bloody hard…. I wouldn’t be happy doing it now, let alone at 5th Form (level 1).
  
  I doubt that many of my Level 2 Physics students could have done the 2 physics-type questions. (2f, 3b)

    It’s been a few years (erm, decades perhaps) since I did the equivalent paper but this doesn’t seem all that different or more difficult than what I’d have expected. Perhaps the teaching focussed on other aspects so the pupils were less well prepared.

    3a(i) looks like there is insufficient information to solve the problem. Obviously you are supposed to say x+6 and x-2, but in fact, if x was 5 for example, you could have sides of 11 and 3 or 33 and 1 or various other possibilities.
    
    The most shocking part for me was the instruction at the top that says: “A student cannot gain Achievement in this standard without solving at least one problem.”

      I assume you have to *complete* a problem to get achieved so 90% (thanks to working) wouldn’t suffice on it’s own.
      
      For the wording in 3a(i), I’d have put the expected answer (to get the marks!) and then commented that it’s not the only solution so the “correct” answer is x and y/x (with y>0 and x not 0).

People have been enjoying some of the five-star ratings of Hillary’s new book, Stonger Together. I say five-star because you really don’t want to wade through the nastiness of the one-star reviews, which constitute the bulk of them.

Here’s some comments from people who have rated the book highly:

First off, I would like to thank Hillary for printing this all in blue ink because the color blue helps prevent my seizures. It was a little bit of a long read, being 32,000 pages of yoga routines, but I powered through it. Its amazing to think that she wrote the entire book on a Blackberry! I didn’t know it was a pop-up book until I got to the chapter about her husband, Bill and his oval office experiences. The only issues I had with the book were all of the annoying “C” markings in the margins. At under $10 it’s a bargain, considering that Saudi Princes pay millions of dollars for such insight. Plus, included with the book is a $10 off coupon for a Diazepam Autoinjector, so you get your money back right there.

This book changed my life! It was perfect! Couldn’t have been better!! Our kitchen table had one of the four legs a little shorter than the others. It constantly wobbled. ‘Stronger Together’ was the exact thickness needed to end the wobble
…
I was THRILLED to see the book finally out!
I’ve been trying to drop a size to fit into a dress for a wedding at the end of the month, and from page one this has kept me SO nauseated I haven’t been able to keep ANYTHING down!
I couldn’t be bulimic on my own – I really am a coward when it comes to self-induced puking – but this has made it SO EFFORTLESS.
I may even finish it…maybe I can lose 3 or 4 sizes by the time I’m done

I also enjoyed this review of Hillary’s latest book:

I was going to read this book…..I really was. But just as I got started, I found myself under sniper fire, passed out, and fell and hit my head. After that I got double vision and had to wear glasses that were so damn thick I couldn’t even see to read. Then I had an allergic reaction to something and started coughing so hard I spit out what looked like a couple of lizard’s eyeballs, my limbs locked up, and I passed out and fell down again, waking up only to find out I had been diagnosed with pneumonia 2 days earlier. Somehow I managed to power through it all, but it’s a good thing I was able to make a small fortune on this random small trade in the commodities market (cattle futures or some such thing) and then, miracle of all miracles, a few banks offered me a few million to just talk to their employees for a few minutes – and all that really helped out because I swear I was dead broke and couldn’t figure out how I was gonna come up with the 6 bucks to pay for this book, let alone pay the $1,500 for my health insurance this month. I still want to read it, but, honestly, what difference at this point does it make?

Woah – now that guy has a long memory – and he packs a lot of daggers into this short piece.

  The reviews of Trump’s books are always entertaining, too. This of ‘Crippled America: How To Make America Great Again’:
  
  Better titled, “President of the United States for Dummies”
  I must say that this is one of the more imaginative works of nonfiction writing in recent times. A great follow up to the biographical series, Game of Thrones. King Joffery’s great great great nephew, Donald Trump, has been able to carry on the key aspects of what it means to be of Lannister heritage. A Lannister/Trump “always pays his debts” especially when settling a lawsuit or mandated by an Official of the Judicial branch. Avoid the pigeon pie Mr. Trump, Lannisters are known to have a sever allergy to its contents. This was my favorite required textbook that we studied in my class at Trump University, it was worth the thousands in tuition.

I honestly don’t know who planted the bombs in Chelsea, New York (although I suspect it was a Muslim – but that’s not the point of my comment).

What I find amazing is the response of the authorities where some halfwitted idiot reported on Stuff:investigators were wary of declaring any of the attacks to be acts of terrorism

If putting bombs in dumpsters isn’t terrorism, what the fuck is it? Street theatre? Installation art, maybe?

There are some real PC idiots in the media and in law enforcement.

      It’s a terrorist act if its intention is to bring about a change in Government policy through terror. Unless and until somebody says, or it otherwise becomes clear, that the intention of this attack was to force the Government to make some specific policy change, then it’s a violent crime – but not the specific category of violent crime that constitutes a terrorist act.

Holly crap – who has seen this latest interview with Hillary? This was a mini Q&A session with the reporters on her campaign plane and she was responding to questions about the New York bombings.

Around the half-way mark she just repeats the same thing she said first up – almost verbatim. WTF? Can you really be this programmed for what is a moving series of events? Was she actually thinking at all during this Q&A? Did she think this was a debate, where pre-scripted lines can be dropped in?

What? Because this sure did not look like someone firing on all cylinders mentally.

    The thing that really disturbed me about that Obama video was the fact that it was taken at all. It’s obviously furtive: not a staff member – so how did they get this sort of access to the US President.
    
    In other words, where the fuck was the Secret Service? They’ve had a lot of problems in recent years, between hookers and failures to stop intruders. This was just another one. Symbolic of the condition of the USA perhaps?

Last week, 15 and 16 year olds across NZ sat an NCEA Level 1 Algebra exam. This is one of those no calculators allowed, just bring a pen and your maths skills and see what you can do in an hour type of exams.

My 15 year old (my youngest son) was one of the unlucky pupils who were subjected to this exam that has now generated outrage up and down NZ from children, teachers and parents alike.

The story has now been picked up by the Daily Mail Australia:

If you want to see what all fuss is about, the last two news items above have direct links to the exams.

Personally, I’m not surprised or outraged, both of those emotions having been expended over the last several years as I’ve tried to help my older boy with his NCEA mathematics.

So, for my younger boy I did what I could over the last few weeks before the exam in going through his algebra skills and helping him prepare what he might be faced with on exam day.

However, there just wasn’t enough time, but then there was never going to be. A lot of algebra take a while to sink in, and NCEA mathematics is just too modularised for that gradual process to be given room to breathe and grow.

So I have to laugh when Labour’s Chris Hipkins tries to make the Algebra exam, also known as the MCAT, National’s fault.

Hipkins said NZQA had some questions to answer over the exam.

“Exams are exams and they are designed to test kids, but this is something [NZQA] will need to explain.”

The level of outcry on the exam pointed to a wider problem, he said.

“I’m really worried that the push to get kids achieving the standard National has set… is putting kids under enormous amounts of pressure.”

The Government’s target was that 85 per cent of 18-year-olds would achieve NCEA Level 2, or the equivalent, in 2017.

“It just shows how worried kids are getting about NCEA,” Hipkins said.

Of course, the other problem is that the exam experts, who shall not be named, have set an exam that was too difficult for the curriculum level. These so-called experts should really be held to account, and part of that ought to be naming them. Otherwise nothing will change.

  I couldn’t see the problem with it. I thought back to School cert days for me 45 years ago. The questions don’t look out of place for the sort of things 15 yr olds learned for School C algebra. I’ll have to ask my niece what she thought of it as she would have sat this exam.

  25 years since I’ve studied maths. Read the exam, Pretty easy, needing only basic knowledge of quadratic equations and rearrangement of algebraic equations. Suspect those moaning just need to spend a bit more time on practise questions.

  Anyway, to most people, just the words Maths Exam generates stress. I had to laugh at one of the comments attached to one of the articles I posted. It said something like, red hot poker in the eye or read a maths exam … hmmm.

She also pointed out the fact that the American planes stopped shelling the area where the Syrian army was as soon as it was occupied by Islamic State militants.

This is a crucial point. The stronghold the US bombed covered an area of hills and they hit all of them, so it wasn’t just a one off bomb run and an unlucky strike, it was a sustained multi-plan attack over a wide area which the Syrian Army has held since day one of the war. So it wasn’t a shifting piece of territory.

The point most telling to me is the fact the US has had air ops in place for over three years and not once it has “helped” the Syrian Army, so why now, just before the Geneva Agreement reaches a critical phase, which was due to start today, does the US suddenly decide to “help” them.

Seriously folks, I’ve noticed quite a few of you now realise what an evil corrupt person Clinton is, so if you can see that, why you can’t also see the US-IS connections and what its done in Syria is beyond me.

After all they couldn’t spot convoys of tankers shipping oil from ISIS captured oil-fields (which don’t actually move believe it or not) nor the long queues of pick-ups travelling between captured cities (that journalists seemed to have no trouble finding and taking photos or filming).

I see the left won Berlin in the German elections too. Merkel as you know is a Western puppet. The left is not and they have been making noises about the sanctions for a long time. If Germany gets together with Russia and turns away from NATO, that’s the end of the deal in Europe. Pipeline flows to Germany and from there to the rest of the world. Aucklanders can reduce congestion and transport costs by using a new Uber system to catch rides into town with drivers already heading their way.

“What we wanted to do was make it easier for drivers to access flexible work,” Uber general manager for New Zealand Richard Menzies said.

The new service, Driver Destinations, connects commuters so they can share their morning and evening commutes.

Uber had a number of their drivers who were driving a few hours a week to earn extra money. The new feature allows Uber drivers to pick up fares while on their way to work.

The feature is different to a normal Uber ride in that drivers can specifically pick up someone going in the same direction as them as a way to earn some extra money on their usual commute. They do not need to go out of their way to drop passengers somewhere in another area.

Brigitte asked about what part of the exam was too hard.

Here’s an example in this article from the NZ Herald comparing two similar questions from a previous exam and this year’s one.

The previous exam has as an answer x=1/2. Not a difficult answer to check in the original equation to see if it works. However, this year’s question:

(x squared +2x – 8)/(x+2)(x-2)=x/2 gives as an answer a radical (or in NZ maths speak, a surd) of +/- sqrt of 8. Which is beyond this curriculum level – it’s Year 13 Calculus level to be able to work with these sorts of numbers back into the original equation to see if they are correct.

And then there’s the analysis of the triangle with all the numbers adding up and having to change the numbers around to see what happens and then work out algebra to represent this. The closest I’ve seen to something like this is outside of the NZ curriculum to do with calculating patterns of polynomials as you increase the term numbers. It’s far too complex for Level one.

I haven’t really analysed all the questions myself to give a more comprehensive answer than this, so I hope it explains it somewhat.

      This one I thought was the one which would most likely give the most grief to students. In some ways it’s a bit like a maths puzzle where the difficulty lies in turning the question into a form that can be solved. The actual algebra required is rather minimal IF you know what to do.
      
      I have a maths degree so it can be a little difficult remembering what is taught when at school level.

    Does it have to be that symbolic? I noticed that the outside additions counted once but the middle addition counted twice, so if the middle addition remained the same – 7 + 1 or 5 +3 – there would be no change in the total; but if the middle was bigger – 7 + 3 or 7 +5 – the total would be bigger, and vice versa if the middle total was smaller than 8.
