    Have to agree with Kimbo on this one. We were told that Trump was not a serious candidate and would get swept away in the primary. He wins the primary gaining a record number of votes for a Republican in the primary season. We were then told he wouldn’t make it to the convention. But at the convention the supporters made it crystal clear who their nominee was.
    
    We were then told that Trump can’t raise money. He raised record amounts with huge numbers of people giving him small donations.
    
    We then were toldTrump is definitely going to go down because of his polling numbers nationally. Trump’s polling numbers nationally have now improved and he is ahead of Hillary according to some polls.
    
    We now have been told that national polling does not matter and it’s all about state polling in key battleground states. Trump’s polling is now improving in key battleground states.
    
    However I expect shortly we will be treated to the next installment of “why Trump can’t possibly win”.

      …and that’s very thoughtful, Scott. Good answer, and you’ve obviously been doing some thinking. Deserved uptick from me. And it is also the caveat anyone should take into account in any election, eg., Truman in 1948.
      
      Now seeing you are in the mood to defend your cherished causes, and as I’ve been seeking on a number of occasions for an answer from you for nigh on two weeks (I’m guessing you missed my posts addressed to you on the subject 😉 ), and as per your previously-stated belief that the heavens and the earth were created in 6 days some 6,000 years ago, do you also think – also in line with a literal interpretation of the Scriptures –:
      
      – there was a pre-existent dark watery mass before God created the heavens and the earth
      
      – the earth is a flat disk resting on pillars in “the midst of the waters”
      
      – the heavens/sky is a metal firmament/dome hammered out into shape on a giant anvil
      
      – that hold back “the waters above”
      
      – but with sluice gates in it that can open to release the waters
      
      – and that the sun and the moon rush across

        No idea where you get those concepts Kimbo. Don’t see a metal dome in Scripture? Perhaps the Bible is wrong? Perhaps God is confused and is just not capable of telling us how things came into being?
        
        I suggest you check with your reformed mates. They are usually good on biblical inerrancy and why the Genesis account is a literal account. So I’m sure there are plenty in your own church that can inform you on these matters.

        So the understanding I suggest is that after the creation of the heavens and the earth there was a formless earth. There was a separation of the waters, that would be the ocean below and that could be a layer of water vapour in the atmosphere. This was suggested by Henry Morris which would account for the days and days of worldwide rainfall in the Genesis flood. Also a layer of water vapour would account for the earth being much warmer in its history.
        
        But yes I am happy to read the Bible literally because God has moved in history and that what we have is an historical account of the creation of the earth, in the same way what we read in Luke is an historical account of the life and death and resurrection of Jesus. It is important as Christians that we read it this way because we believe that God has moved in history.
        So yes literal waters which follows the “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. So literal creation, in 6 days which is what the Bible says, the earth is thousands of years old and not millions of years which is what the genealogies say and a worldwide flood which again is what the Bible says and is also an agreement with a proper understanding of archaeology and the fossil record.

        The problem with that self-appraisal, Scott, is that you seem, like many, to be blind to your own “glasses” through which you view and assess. For example, JWs say the same about how they approach Scripture.

        No, as per where I quoted Genesis 1:6-8 above the NIV uses the term “vault” – like a solid roof. It, like the KJV’s “firmament” reflect the fact that the authorial intent to the original recipients was working with their pre-existing cosmology of a solid sky.

        He he he. Read the Genesis flood account again – the waters recede back to where they were before – both below…and above…the dome. Remember where it says “the windows of heaven opened”. Literal windows/sluice gates holding back the waters above – that is what the Hebrews thought the Universe was like.

As per John Calvin, “The human testimonies which go to confirm (the Scriptures) will not be without effect, if they are used in subordination to that chief and highest proof, as secondary helps to our weakness”. Sadly Scott, in your case I would conclude that your ultimate authority is not the Scriptures, but the interpretive system that you impose upon them. Like the JWs…

So a six day creation is literal, but “windows of heaven” and “firmament/vault/dome” is figurative? In the same genre and context?!
        
        Did you never think, Scott, that as this guy had no formal biblical translation and exegetical skills, he was out of his depth? As per Luther and Calvin, if you want to know what the text means, understand first what it meant to the original recipients. The Scriptures were not written to refute unbelievers, including “godless evolutionists”. So why treat it that way?!

        In Genesis 7 it says –

        So the springs of the great deep could be great reservoirs of underground water. The floodgates of heaven is certainly a figurative phrase – we do accept that there is figurative language rather than scientific language used.
        
        But everyone accepts a certain amount of figurative language as in the use of sunrise and sunset.
        But yes I am persuaded and have been for some time that the Scriptures can be read at face value as historical.
        
        So that means a literal creation in 6 days which is what the Bible says and a universal worldwide flood which is what the Bible says because of the universal judgement on mankind which is what the Bible says.

        No Kimbo, of course there will be some figurative language. We use the word “sunrise” when scientifically speaking the sun doesn’t actually rise. So no problem with that. But that doesn’t preclude the genesis account being 6 days, literal days nor the rest of the account being accurate.
        Why shouldn’t God give us a reliable account of what occurred. If he didn’t which is what you imply then genesis is just an historical artifact that may have meant something to ancient Hebrews but is irrelevant now.
        
        Regarding the use of the word “vault” I see it is in the latest version of the NIV, but not in the 1984 version which I use. The nrsv does use the word dome, the King James and other versions use the word firmament or expanse.
        So depends what version of the bible you use. I haven’t seen anything lately from a creationist perspective on the treatment of dome. If I do I’ll come back to you.

        That’s one possibility. Or how about something a bit more prosaic – your interpretation of it is misinformed, with significant deficiencies and gaps in your knowledge, and therefore….mistaken. I note that doesn’t seem to fit your plausibility structure. Says much about you.
        
        As per the interpretive principles elucidated by the Reformers Luther and Calvin, if you want to know what a biblical text means, first find out what it meant to the original recipients, and then work out the application for today. Something that Ken Ham for instance, and in his hast to build creation theme-parks has never done.
        
        The Hebrews thought the earth was a flat disk, built on pillars in the midst of “the waters” (where did that water in Genesis 1:2 before the creation come from, btw?!) with a metal dome sky separating the waters above and below. Re-read Genesis 1, and the flood narrative of Genesis 6 to 9 again carefully, put aside your preconceptions, and if you let the text speak on its own terms (which we should do if we really believe the authority of Scripture – not Ken Ham!), you may just see it.
        
        And then ask, if God wanted to teach them theological and spiritual truth about the purpose of the Universe and humanity within it, why would be bother also taking the detour, “oh, yeah, by the way the earth is round and circles the sun courtesy of gravity…”?! No point. So my advice: stop treating the Bible as a science text book. It was not written for that purpose, including the details of a 6 day creation some 6,000 years ago.

        That’s the difficulty when you take an adversarial approach to Genesis. It’s all well and good to say that it reflects the understanding of the time. But if it doesn’t reflect the actual reality then it’s only a historical artefact.
        
        And basically that logic extends to every other part of Scripture including the parts presumably you would want to defend such as the virgin birth and the actual bodily resurrection of Christ. So the atheist goes, well in those days people believed in miracles but now we have a scientific understanding and we know that miracles are not true.
        
        And before you know it you are a liberal leaning Christian which is then a stepping stone to the next generation that has no faith at all. So our attitude towards Genesis is important because it shapes our attitude towards the rest of Scripture.

Instead it was concerned with refuting other competing Ancient Near Eastern creation accounts, where the gods did not care about the earth or humankind.

        And that is your problem, because you have now uncritically adopted a method of assessment that is prevalent in our culture known as logical positivism that is not biblical and you are ultimately subsuming the Scriptures to it. Instead, if the Scriptures are truly authoritative, let them speak on their own terms, and adopt their forms of thought and rhetoric, rather than imposing your “logic” on to it.

        Most likely, Abraham existed. But why are you asking that question…when from the perspective of the Scriptures he is the father of faith?! We have no direct archaeological evidence of his existence (other than the Scriptural account that, on its own terms, was written centuries after his wanderings), although that is hardly surprising as he was a nomad and nomads don’t build cities! But from what we know of life in the 2nd millennium BC, the patriarchal narrative of Genesis 12-50 fits.

        Yes but that “logical extension” is not only necessary, it is invalid to apply to a product of the cultural milieu of the Ancient Near East. Let it speak on its own terms.

      2016, Trump: 14 million out of 31 million.
      2012, Romney: 10 million out of 19 million
      2008, McCain: 9 million out of 20 million.

      A tiny, tiny, tiny number of people yammered about that – and some of them were shit-stirring Democrats. 🙂 But even on the #NevertTrump side it was a minority because even they knew it would rip the party apart when down-ballot races are crucial.

      You were told that he was not bothering to raise money — which was quite true – not that he couldn’t. And that remains the case, which is why he’s hundreds of millions of dollars behind Hillary and even his own staff admit that they can’t catch up.
      
      As far as “record amounts” you must mean record lows: no such candidate has ever been so poorly off. But perhaps you have a source that proves his small donor money exceeds that of Romney and others? Even if that were so it’s meaningless in the larger context. And given the pitiful amounts of advertising, staff and offices, you should be asking what he’s doing with the money he has raised.

      I thought the polls were rigged?
      
      I can’t speak for others – especially moronic journalists in search of “fight-fight” clickbait – but anybody who follows these things knows that it’s not about National polls or vote totals. I suggest you check out the percentages of total votes for winning and losing POTIS candidates in the past. You’ll find that they’re usually not separated by much – even when the Electoral College vote total shows a solid victory for the winner.

      You’ve been told that from the start. This is not some fall-back argument for when other arguments have failed, which is your implication.
      
      And as usual you provide no source for your claim about state polls. I would not be surprised if Ohio and Florida remain close up to election day as they’ve done that for the last few elections. Hell, Trump might even win both. But he’d still lose the election, given the other states, including some where Hillary has stopped advertising on TV: that decision would be based on their internal polling. You think they’re lying to themselves?

  I don’t buy that for a moment. Someone of McCarten’s status (and like him or loathe him, McCarten is a high-profile political operative) would not be stepping sideways from a Chief of Staff role to being a glorified PA based in Auckland. That simply defies credibility.
  
  We, including the media, need to watch McCarten constantly, and the moment he crosses the line from “outreach” to campaigning, complain in writing to the Speaker. Labour cannot be allowed to break the rules so brazenly.

How interesting it is to hear that Vanguard one of world’ largest Investment Managers is now going to set up an Ethical Fund for New Zealanders who invest via Kiwi Saver.
The fund Managers have asked those who are readily concerned (Greenpeace, Party & MSM Party) to let them know who to not put to the Fund.
I assume that there will be very few companies who will be into this scheme as the Fund opponents are against everything.
What will happen to those who decide to put their KiwiFunds into this scheme when they find that the management fees will exceed their earnings as ethical funds will not really earn any money for the fund.
Balance is the important part of any managed fund. Personally I am against managed funds.
– I lost a six figure fortune with one of the leading default major Kiwifund managers some years ago with the fund being promoted in the papers etc as the real answer to Managed Funds. The managers took their 2.75% fees every year for 5 locked in years on a diminishing capital.
I hope that those who wish to subscribe to this “ethical” fund understand what they are taking on.
There is no Government Guarantee on any Kiwi Funds.

  A reason to set up an ‘ethical’ fund is to take the pressure off the manager, even if the fund underperforms. At a guess an ‘ethical’ fund would perform on average at 95% of a non-ethical fund. However if an increasing number of investors choose ‘ethical’ funds, especially if there is pressure on the approved ‘default’ funds to become ‘ethical’ investors, the performance of ‘ethical’ funds will start lagging other funds by an ever increasing amount.
  
  A further issue that could occur in the future is a government could be more and more prescriptive of how funds invest and that will be effectively a return to the pre-Rogernomics era where banks, insurance companies etc were required to invest so much money in Government and local body bonds, house mortgages at a capped interest rate etc.

  For Vanguard, this could be akin to herding cats. One person’s idea of ethical investing will often not mirror another person’s idea of ethical investing. They need to offer up one, or a few, funds with very rigid guidelines and let those who invest decide which elements of ethical investment they feel comfortable with.
  
  In my experience (albeit limited to one piece of work carried out for a fund manager checking this subject out over twenty years ago) a determined SJW could cry foul over almost any investment not being ethical. How about a company engaged in logistics planning? Sounds OK, but (shock, horror), wait till the SJW discovers they had a contract with a company that mines coal. How about a company that manufactures specialist glass products? Sounds OK, but (more shock, horror), wait till the SJW discovers their glass was being used in nuclear powered submarines. The list of possible conflicts is endless.

  Have to disagree with your friend of a friends assessment, Huevon. Have just spent 2 weeks on the French Riviera, including 3 days in Nice. Plenty of tourists about, some army patrols on the central city streets, but nothing overwhelming or overly threatening. My wife’s handbag was checked by store security at Galleries Lafayette, but done nicely and with a smile.
  
  “Everyone is scared”. Sorry, in our interactions with the locals and other visitors, we didn’t notice any scared people at all; the beach was packed, the restaurants and bars were busy as, life was going on. We liked Nice very much and would happily return.

If they were that bothered about the impact of climate change upon populations, they would be demanding that black people in Africa don’t QUADRUPLE in demographic size by the end of this century, and would campaign to stop them migrating to the west, where Africans simply help fuel the usage of power stations, cars, planes, water, much greater than where they come from.

But I am sure that would be seen as “racism”, where whites get to live in luxury whilst blacks suffer being poor in their own ramshackle nations. (I wouldn’t have a problem with that, though!)

These people are extremely annoying, and the media seem to be making sure they cover all their stunts……but I like to think it will backfire. People are already growing sick of things, and only the likes of Stephieboy/MM/Griff/Tom Hunter could take this seriously. I hope it pushes people over the edge to look further in the Alt-Right direction than ever listen or take heed of their BLM agenda.

  I’m generally pro-immigration, but his shows aren’t convincing. He just presents a stream of facts that all suggest one conclusion, and doesn’t even try to address the other side’s arguments. Rather like John Campbell just with a lesser sense of self-importance.
  
  His point about cost vs benefit is a good one though. When some other country has paid for the person’s education up to tertiary level and we stand to get 40+ years of work and tax out of them, it’s likely to be a good deal for us.

    What way, other than dollars and cents is a feasible and cut-though-the-spin way to assess the costs vs benefits? Would likely include costs of crimes committed by immigrants, state benefits and National Super, health costs to the NZ tax payer, etc.
    
    So other than an amorphous “dilution of culture” (since when is any culture static, especially in the modern world?!), what other costs are there? I mean real ones, not from EAD’s paranoia 😉

Radio veteran Barely Sober in the Hooerald today tackles the question of why NZ young people allegedly won’t work.

MSM hacks might get a better understanding of the problem when and if the remaining MSM outlets being importing reporters, editors, and announcers from the Philippines or China.

The welfare system and marijuana culture have done huge damage to the work ethic in NZ, but as always, finally it’s leadership that’s the problem.

If the military can be taken as an example, new leaders have by inspiration and management frequently invigorated failing bodies of people.

Perhaps this old adage could be adapted for employees and would-be employees: a bad employer blames his workers, a good employer looks after them.

Meanwhile, if there is some sort of PR attempt under way to negate immigration as a key factor in the next election, I have a feeling it will only enhance immigration as a factor.

  Donald Trump is no Republican and certainly no conservative.
  
  Individual liberty? Trump has displayed an authoritarian streak that should horrify limited-government advocates. This impulsive, unbridled New York real estate billionaire and reality-TV star wants to deport people who were born in the U.S. and don’t meet his standard for loyalty. He has proposed banning all Muslims from entering the country, even those escaping Islamist rule, and won’t rule out creating a database of Muslims already living here.
  
  His open admiration of Russia’s Vladimir Putin is alarming.
  
  Free markets? Economic conservatism? Ronald Reagan once said that “protectionism is destructionism.” Trump, on the other hand, has called the Trans-Pacific Partnership “a rape of our country.”
  
  Businesses who invest overseas, he says, should pay a hefty fine on imports. (We’ll leave aside for a moment his hypocrisy in pretending that investing in hotels abroad, as he does, is somehow different from a manufacturer investing in foreign car factories.) His protectionism would likely force the U.S. into trade wars, increase the deficit and sink the U.S. economy back into a recession.
  
  Trump’s idea of fiscal conservatism is reducing expenses by financing mountains of soul-crushing debt.
  
  Strong national defense? Trump pledges to make our military “so big, so powerful, so strong that nobody — absolutely nobody — is going to mess with us.” But what does he want to do with that military? He says he supports killing the families of Muslim terrorists and allowing interrogation methods “a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.” And if the military balks at obeying such orders? “If I say do it, they’re gonna do it,” he says.
  
  His isolationist prescriptions put sound bites over sound policy: Invite the Russians into our elections. Bomb the Middle East into dust. Withdraw from NATO.
  
  It’s not easy to offer a shorthand list of such tenets, since Trump flips from one side to the other, issue after issue, sometimes within a single news cycle. Regardless, his ideas are so far from Republicanism that they have spawned a new description: Trumpism.
  
  We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory.
  
  Trump doesn’t reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn’t reflect the GOP of the future.
  
  Donald Trump is not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote.

Is the alt right racist?

Last week, two prominent intellectuals in the conservative movement, Hugh Hewitt and Jonah Goldberg, took to talk radio to grapple with “the alt right.” Who are they? For what does their faction stand? What should conservatives do about them?

“The one thing they all agree on,” Jonah Goldberg argued, “is that we need to organize this society on the assumption that white people are genetically superior, or that white culture is inherently superior, and that we should have either state-imposed or culturally-imposed segregation between the races, no race mixing with the lower brown people. And I take them at their word, that that’s the stuff that they believe. And I think rather than poisoning or blurring that distinction, we should take them at their word and say we want nothing to do with any of that.”

Hugh Hewitt agreed that a faction like that exists, and that they should be shorn from the conservative movement. But he added that while the core of the faction is racist, there are other people who have taken to describing themselves as “alt-right” without knowing what it means, and who want nothing to do with a racist project. He urged that in the process of exiling racists from the right, care should be taken to avoid folks who say they’re on the alt-right but reject that abhorrent agenda.

Yes, apparently a forest has been granted all the rights of a person. The same is supposed to be true of the Whanganui River.

  Te Urewera to be a legal entity, and has all the rights, powers, duties, and liabilities of a legal person, with all rights, powers, and duties to be exercised by the Te Urewera Board.

A top aide to Hillary Clinton fed questions to a senator before a crucial hearing about her role in the Benghazi terrorist attack, freshly-released emails show.

The 2013 message from Clinton’s communications advisor Philippe Reines says that the team ‘wired it’ so that Democratic senator Robert Menendez would ask about two topics Clinton wanted to answer – which he duly did.

‘We wired it that Menendez would provide an opportunity to address two topics we needed to debunk (her actions/whereabouts on 9/11, and these email (sic) from Chris Stevens about moving locations),’ the email says.

The email, dated the day of the hearing on January 23, 2013, was sent to ‘Diane Reynolds’ – an alias of Chelsea Clinton – who replied saying ‘I really appreciate the update’.

At the hearing itself, Menendez asked about both topics cited in the email in his first questions of the day.

    I posted about the Trump Bondi transaction on GD yesterday as I had just seem something on Politico about it. First I was aware of it. Today it is all over everything in the US. The time lines and the quid pro quo are so clear it can only be interpreted as a bribe, particularly when the Trump Foundation declared the payment as being to a legitimate charity with a similar name to Bondi’s PAC but sent the cheque to her. Not only a btibe but a cover up and tax evasion and a breech of the Charity regulations. Trump has lots of form in this area with several sanctions and fines for breeching campaign finance rules, but this looks like the first obvious bribe.

  Seasonal allergies my arse. As a bad hayfever sufferer and asthmatic it is only asthma that causes coughing, and an attack can be remedied in seconds with an inhaler, and very effective preventatives if it is ongoing issue. Seasonal allergies aren’t a summer thing. You get pollen in spring, mould/mildew in late autumn or winter. Also no mention of allergies in her time as 1st lady (even when promoting asthma and allergy issues)
  
  If she had a cold or flu or pneumonia she could say so and noone would criticise her for it.

  The problem is how do you make houses affordable when a 500 square metre section in Auckland costs $400,000 plus?
  Moscow-style tenements, or are they going to appropriate the land off the land-bankers by Government decree?
  In reality there are hundreds of thousands of affordable homes in NZ, they’re just in the wrong places for the masochists who want to live in bloody Auckland.
  Wanganui, Hastings, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Taupo, Masterton, Blenheim, Timaru, Invercargill etc., even places 30 minutes drive from downtown Wellington where perfectly reasonable first homes can be had for $250K or less.
  When this finally pops and Aucklanders flee to the provinces the banks are going to be holding the baby and building more and more houses in Auckland is only going to make it worse.

Granted, the council are complete tosspots and making the city unliveable, but, at the same time, provincial New Zealand does not have the jobs and the nearest thing, for someone in my area, is Hamilton (and even that has very limited opportunities). I heard on the 6pm news that New Zealand is to give $200 million to other countries for climate change. This kind of makes me angry – us giving so much money on behalf of this fictitious problem. There are so many things in NZ we could be using that money for 😡

The government has been giving polluters two for one on carbon credits.
Except industry has been cashing in fraudulent eastern European units and swapping them ours that are worth about 18 times more.

Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett says the decision is a confirmation of commitment to the historic agreement.

The agreement was finalised in December, when representatives from 175 countries signed it in Paris. It has been available for signature since April.

Ratification is the formal step countries must take to be full participants and ensure the agreement takes effect.

Ms Bennett says New Zealand will ratify it before a UN climate change conference in November.

Reason one to turn off every last advert. The day I like is ‘avoid bullshit adverts at all costs’ day – the day that I heartily endorse with relentless passion.
