It’s what the “news” report does not tell us that is the most telling thing about the story.

“We are restrictive when it comes to specifying ethnicity, description or other information such as age, appearance and addresses. We do specify that in some cases if it is important to move the investigation forward and we need the help of the public. Otherwise not,” wrote the police on their Facebook page.”

The other aspect is the authorities seem more concerned that the locals aren’t prepared to put up with this enrichment; “Police mainland backup arrived on the island on Friday after emotions flared following media reports on the men’s release from custody. Some of this is understood to have included threats made against the five men. A separate probe has also been launched after individuals turned up on the prosecutor’s doorstep.”
You see we are now ruled ,not by a rule of law , but by virtue signalling and if you’re not one of the virtuous you are an enemy of the state.

There is a lot of good Maori leaders out there also,every race have a few bad apples but that is not their fault either.I don’t agree with the way the treaty settlement gravy train keeps dipping to get more and i certainly think the top end should be using it to help their lower class. So i would suggest there is a lot of good Maori out there that do not need to be tared with your brush

  The biggest flaw in the Treaty Iwi Lottery is that once thrown the money, the tribal elite can do whatever they wish with it. The government wouldn’t dare question where the money ends up. The whole process is set up for gross corruption.

Some banks are giving customers the choice of ‘no unauthorised overdrafts’. This means that if a transaction would drive the account into overdraft it would be rejected. This seems to be a ‘good thing’.
However Kiwibank has rejected offering such a service as it said it could not recover fees that would send the account into overdraft. This seems like hogwash – it can claim the fees anyway as long as they were lawfully imposed.
Anyway such a stance goes right against the principles behind setting up Kiwibank in the first place. These included keeping the other banks honest and providing banking services to people where other banks were not interested.
This raises the question of dishonour fees. I would accept that a dishonoured cheque requires some human intervention and so a fee is justified. However it seems hard to justify a hefty fee to reject an automatic payment, direct debit or future dated direct credit since this happens without human intervention. Seems a 50 cent fee is all that can be justified if that.
The problem is the banks want to keep ‘headline’ fees down or lose competetiveness. In the case of over 65’s it is normal not to charge fees. Therefore the banks need to charge hefty fees for other services to be profitable. Kiwibank seems unfortunately exposed to this pressure.

  Apparently there are over 200 white South African rugby players who have moved to other countries not just for a better life (better pay, not being shot on the way to work) but also for the opportunity to play.
  
  That’s a lot when you consider that South African rugby playing is really only of interest to whites (approx 4M people), so the effect is pretty much the same as 200 top NZ players going overseas because they can’t see a career in NZ.
  
  This is going to kill South African rugby because kids will no longer aspire to rugby. It is one of the few things white South Africans still had some national pride about. This is a deliberate kick in the balls of white people by Zuma etc. – alienating them in their own country.

Given the murders in the Waikato by a person who should be have in custody it is time citizens demanded the Government uphold the first principle of good governance that is to protect the citizens from harm. Under the H&S Act a non government organsiation would be prosecuted for “failing the take a practicable steps” .

But then its different when the Government does it 2 Faced arseholes that they are.

    There are thousands of people with impacted mental health living successfully in the community. I just watched the news with the reporting reeling off a list of murders committed by “paranoid schizophrenics” since Raurimu. How many brutal murders are committed by the so called sane in the same time period? With the right support people can live well with their illness. Trouble is mental health services have been systematically run down over the past 10 years. Haig was right – it is a system in crisis.

lastmanstanding, presumably it will come out if the psychiatrists at Henry Bennett secure centre believed Ross Bremner was stable enough, safe, to be released into the community. I understand his father was keen to look after him at home, but surely, the ‘professionals’ haven’t made yet another mistake and released an unstable killer who went on to murder his mother, stab his father and kill two strangers. Wouldn’t be the first time!

  In 1992 a man following an argument murdered his family then took his own life. Only a 9 year old grand daughter who hid survived. Motive not known be appeared to be in a fragile mental state but presumably he had not been diagnosed with a mental illness. As the late Dr McDonald said, 20% of the population has a mental illness at some point, and it would be impracticable to lock up 20% of the population in institutions on the off-chance that they may harm themselves or others.

  Don’t blame psychiatrists. They weren’t behind the wave of popular opinion typified by the film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, that led to the emphasis on psychiatric care being moved from secure institutions to the community.
  
  Psychiatrists cannot tell for certain what a mentally ill patient or a formerly mentally ill patient will do in future. It’s probabilities, and if you want psychiatrists to lift the safety margin then you will need more secure hospitals to be built, replacing those that were closed.
  
  This would mean many people who now enjoy life in the community without hurting anyone would live as prisoners.

Porirua has elected just its fifth mayor in its 51-year history, with political newcomer Mike Tana winning the mayoral chains.

The result would come as a shock to many, with Tana coming into the race in August as a first-time candidate.

Speaking at 7.40pm he said he had been called by the Porirua City chief executive and told he was the mayor.

He faced off against favourite and incumbent councillor Euon Murrell, Mike Duncan, Liz Kelly, David Watt and Gordon Marshall.
Tana, an underdog going into the race, said he and his supporters went “out to the people”, and the community came on board.

“To be honest, it was a huge climb. At the beginning I had no idea how it would happen, but we just didn’t give up.”

He said he felt blessed and shocked and he had been told it was a close-run race.

“It was meant to be, and I’m just chuffed.”

A bone to chew on for a wet Sunday …

The recent official Maorification of Radio New Zealand seems to be evident in a report touching on Vincent O’Malley’s new book on the Waikato land war.

A report about the book gives a Tainui slant on the relative significance for New Zealand of World War 1 versus the 1860s invasion of the Waikato by British troops.

The Radio NZ report says:

New Zealand is in the midst of fulsome commemorations of World War I, the conflict that supposedly gave birth to its national consciousness, but the invasion of Waikato by British troops 50 years earlier is arguably at least as significant.

Here’s some background Radio NZ doesn’t give on why Tainui people feel as they do about World War 1.

Tainui, with memories of the Waikato invasion, opposed conscription in World War 1. This had been extended to Maori in mid-1917 at the request of the MP, Maui Pomare. Recruitment of Maori volunteers earlier had been most successful among Te Arawa and the East Coast tribes.

Many Tainui resisted conscription and were subjected to military punishment. No Tainui conscripts were sent overseas.

According to the web site, NZ History:

As Waikato was seen as the centre of opposition to Maori participation, conscription was only imposed on Maori from Tainui–Waikato. It was also argued that other iwi had ‘done their bit’.

The Radio NZ report also talks of “the Waikato invasion by one of the largest British armed forces ever assembled outside India during the Victorian period.”

Presumably these words are of the reporter, Aaron Smale, and not of O’Malley.

The British had 12,000 imperial troops, including marines and sailors, available for the campaign.

During the Victorian period, Britain fought the Crimean War and the two Boer Wars in South Africa. More than 20,000 British troops died in Crimea. In what we remember as the Boer War (the second, which was still being fought when Queen Victoria died) the British Army had about half a million men. A British force of 50,000, including many British Indian Army troops, took part in the Second Afghan War of 1878 to 1880. Britain assembled bigger forces than its Waikato force also in campaigns in Sudan.

I understand Greg was standing for a position in his local council… anyone know the result ?

Hello all,

got a question/concern…

but before I ask/address that, I would like to apologise for the language I used last time I posted on Kiwiblog. I’m fairly horrified at myself for using the c-word, and for doing it so bluntly. For the record I was not drinking, nor any other “substance”, truly that was my own behavior and anger and I take 100% responsibility for what I said… the debate tripped a switch in my head so hard that I descended into name-calling and vulgar slurs. I should subscribe to my own philosophy, which is to take 24 hours before responding in anger. I am sorry.

Now, I have read the recent reports in the Herald about children in a school in Miramar (including special needs) being locked in a small room. There was a picture of the door in the Herald… it was positively horrific and looked like a prison door. I am surprised at the lack of discussion of this in the herald or stuff or on reputable blogs like this. Teachers have a LOT of stresses on them and they need to be able to discipline kids too – as long as its not the old days of the cane and the strap (I lived through the end of that). But locking kids in “closets” with metal doors and in the dark ….[SHUDDER]… doesn’t anyone in NZ think this is a bit wrong. Its not a PC thing, its just horrible.

    I have been so horrified about all of this since it was first reported.
    
    I remain completely dumbfounded as to why there hasn’t been a stronger outcry by media or the ministry of education, reputable blogs such as this one, or even by the mums and dads of the 13 kids mentioned.
    
    FFS, we cannot lock our vulnerable children in the dark and in rooms that resemble “cells”. These terrible people in Miramar just pretended that primary schools = Bedlam (in the old English sense) .. look at the pictures. It’s horrible. Shame on them.

      I never heard of such rooms or such methods when I was at Training College or at any of the schools at which I taught.
      I taught at one College that had a special needs unit with some seriously autistic pupils. I’m sure time-out spaces would have been employed from time to time; but never a locked dark room.
      
      Seems that these isolation rooms may have been someone’s “bright” idea. They were under investigation in Ireland a couple of years ago.

  Another teacher here.
  I have never seen a room like this before in a school and was shocked like you at the article. The school I was teaching at in NZ also had a special needs unit. There was a quiet area for students to go but is was an alcove, not behind any door. I think if a students behaviour is out of control, a parent should be phoned to come and collect them. If it is a recurring issue then perhaps this would warrant a full time teacher aide who has had some specialist training. It can be incredibly difficult to get funding for this though. If it comes out of the school operating budget then that is a lot of money that is not going toward the other pupils at the school.
  TBH when I saw the headline I thought it was going to be another click bait story from overseas and was shocked that it was a NZ story 🙁

The media aren’t interested because it was the members of the Teachers Union which did such things and they can’t prove that John Key was in any way involved. He didn’t even walk past… It’s not part of the agenda and until it can be linked to JK absolutely nothing will be done; the unions have deemed that it will be so..

  We all need to stand up about this… it is completely independent of political affiliations.
  
  Such a terrible thing: i.e. locking small children in tiny, dark rooms with no support, some of whom have learning disabilities… should not be supported by any teacher. FULL STOP.
  
  And by the way, NZEI or PPTA should be ashamed of themselves if they would support a teacher that shoved a student (learning disability or NOT) into that sort of room. That very picture from NZ Herald is an indictment on Schools in NZ … Note its NOT an indictment on the NZ education system, there’s load and loads of good schools and fantastic teachers out there.

  There is no doubt in my mind, that were this a dreaded CHARTER School, the left would be baying for blood in NO uncertain terms. You will literally never see the left taking a Registered Teacher to task. According to Angela, PPTA president, any unacceptable behaviour is because of the stress teachers are under, to be interpreted as “the fault of a National Govt”.

Take a walk around the streets of Masterton, the 23,000-strong beating heart of the Wairarapa region, and you wouldn’t go far before seeing one of the near-new commercial properties, the product of a thriving rural economy and a civic centre that takes great pride in its appearance.

But take a closer look, and cracks start to appear.

Faulty design work was first discovered when a private Masterton developer Percy McFadzean commissioned a seismic review of a building he constructed in 2005 to be leased to ASB Bank on Masterton’s Queen St.

The initial report found serious design flaws that made the new building earthquake prone. These findings were backed up by two more detailed reviews conducted by independent structural engineering firms.

At pak n feral – ferals had built a literal food pyramid on the self-checkout bagging area with their 150 items. They need to re-think the entrance widths – there’s always a couple of freeze-frame waddling panting fat brown folks blocking the entrance. Here’s an idea – have an express doorway – for humanoids 130kg or less moving 2km/h+. How do you stop the fatties using it ? Simple – put a very gentle slope on either approach.
