Whaleoil has got to wrong again. In their face of the day they say the speaker ejected Ron Mark before question time had started. It was actually after question time had finished. They are allways harping on about “Fact Checking”. They should take their own medicine.

    Whaleoil have still not got the story right. It seems the speaker has winked at a reporter and thats the nub of their story. Slow news week.
    A NZ First clown raised a point of order at the end of question time. The speaker ruled, correctly, that it was out of order but he would meet with the member after question time to discuss it. ( it was all about the new parliment building plans)
    Ron (dipstick) Mark raised a simular point of order.
    The speaker said he had already ruled on the matter. Ron in his wisdom made a “comment” (lets be kind) about the speaker. As the speaker was on his feet he had no choice but to chuck him out.

“Now, a report from the world’s oldest and most prestigious medical journal, The Lancet, has officially classified fluoride as a neurotoxin, in the same category as arsenic, lead and mercury. The news was broken by author Stefan Smyle and disseminated by the Facebook page Occupy Food, which linked to the report published in The Lancet Neurology

“The summary goes on to state that six additional developmental neurotoxicants have also now been identified: manganese, fluoride, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, and the polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

“In the Lancet report, the authors propose a global prevention strategy, saying that “untested chemicals should not be presumed to be safe to brain development, and chemicals in existing use and all new chemicals must therefore be tested for developmental neurotoxicity.”

“The report coincides with 2013 findings by a Harvard University meta-analysis funded by the National Institutes of Health that concluded that children in areas with highly fluoridated water have “significantly lower” IQ scores that those who live in areas with low amounts of fluoride in their water supplies.

“Sodium fluoride in drinking water has also been linked to various cancers. It is functionally different than the naturally-occurring calcium fluoride, and commonly added to drinking water supplies…”

    @Lance – I dont disagree with your proposition – However, in my opinion thebody can function very well without any Fluoride –
    So what is wrong with the proposition that people who want something to prevent tooth decay either purchase Fluoride toothpaste, or add fluoride to their drinking water.
    Why is it that people (perhaps you inlcuded) advocate the ‘state’ make these choices for us?
    The state is already making more and more choices for us, and in my opinion, overstepping the mark.

      The state is not forcing you to do anything. Unfluoridated water can be easily obtained. Most people prefer fluoridated water and it is not practical to have two separate water supplies.

        Excuse me ! Cart before horse logic you are using here.
        There was never flurodide in the water provided by local authorities from the outset. Some government/state decided to change that. Rather than opt in, we have to opt out and bear the cost.
        This smacks of the current coprorate model (eg. airlines), where ‘opt in’ is the default position. It should be that ‘opt in’ is the choice of the consumer. Water is no different.

      Dave c, like other anti fluoride activists you miss the whole point of the Lancet article.The neuro toxicity of Fluoride under investigation were those at dramatically higher levels than municipal water supplies .The study was considering 10 x the concentration found naturally occurring in local wells whereas municipal water like Auckland’s and the US has tiny amounts , . 8 parts per million ,

Am I the only person who is tired of seeing and hearing Bernie Monk in the media ?
He is not the spokesman for a number of the Miners families.
I am very sad that this tragic accident occurred six years ago.
That the Manager for Health and SAFETY sadly lost one son, why were not more questions asked whether he failed in his duty of care. Surely if he was aware of the danger of the mine, as he has maintained since, why did he allow two sons to regularly mine there.
Additionally I and my family gave a contribution to the Miner’s families along with many others including the Taxpayers.
The totals appear to have well exceeded $30 million which equates to a minimum of $1 million to each family.
Dare I ask where all this money has gone – am I allowed to ask ?
I assume Bernie has spent much of it -perhaps on his pub in Greymouth.
He loves the media and them him.

  However, this mine can be safely re-entered.
  
  There was some supposed Health & Safety expert on ZB earlier this week, who stated that it will cost “hundreds of millions of dollars” to re-enter the mine. In typical sensationalist media fashion, they quickly assumed this to be fact and made this statement part of their subsequent news bulletins. This guy is typical of H&S wallahs, no practical experience, and apply a risk matrix to the situation without first devising a plan to re-enter.
  
  I could safely re-enter this mine for 20 million bucks, not in a cowboy fashion, but with a safely designed system and methodology.
  
  From the 20 million, I would still be left change for cocaine and hookers in the Bahamas…

      I admire Bernie’s persistence and sheer doggedness in pursuing all options with regard to the recovery of the miners remains. The fact is though that there will be virtually nothing left to recover, the fires and explosions would have incinerated those remains to fragments.Recovery would be a painfully slow process sifting through debris and equally dangerous with fluctuating methane levels.
      Secondly if entry into the ante chamber does’nt produce results the recovery team will want to push on deeper into the mine which will be highly dangerous.

  They know where it went down but decided to leave it undisturbed as it was very deep and his body was never recovered,along with 5 other fishermen.

Personally I’m not familiar with “Harry’s Place”. It looks like the kind of website that encourages dissent, but not too much – certainly not enough to actually upset the applecart – a bit like Pete Georges “YourNZ”.

The article McLoughlin is commenting under is one of those ones that accept the truth of the grooming gangs and bemoans the fact that they have occurred, but places most of its emphasis on the importance of not letting the right-wing take advantage of these inconvenient facts – i.e. standard lefty cowardice.

This hysterical “news” item caught my attention. How can running over wild ducks be an offence, they’re not protected.
Why did the police want information , when no property was involved?
The SPCA are also being disingenious suggesting this was some sort of heinous crime.

“SPCA Otago director of animal welfare Dr Helen Beattie said in any case of ill treatment of an animal, the Animal Welfare Act contained penalties ranging from a fine to up to five years in prison.”

And finally the media are being their usual shit selves by reporting information around these incidents in such an opaque manner.

    I fail to see the “cruelty” in running over some ducks in this case , despite the claim the driver accelerated . Where’s the proof ? I also fail to see the implied criminality in this case , be it under the Road Traffic or Animal Welfare acts.
    
    The story implied the driver had a duty to stop, when he doesn’t in this case.

    I came across an accident on a main rd just outside of Christchurch about 10 years ago. An elderly woman had stopped suddenly to allow ducks and family to cross..unfortunately it was an 80K zone, which didn’t give the truck and trailer unit following much time to do anything…but straight up and over.         Not at all..however if you rear end anyone you are generally classed as being in the wrong. There was no way the driver could have slowed or even swerved in time to miss her. 40 ton travelling at 80K..pretty difficult to pull up when some dick stops in the middle of the road.

      Came round a corner on that Ngaruawahia to Otorohanga road a few years back and there was a mother duck and about 5 chicks crossing but could not stop in time so mowed them all down.
      I blame McDonald’s for this because if they did not tempt me with those adds for the Double Angus burger so near lunchtime I might not have been going so fast.

    Also, Corrections seems to have been aware of these arrangements.

All the hype from journalist’s about people being locked out of the housing market and the deposit being double the price of previous years.This could be countered if people looked back to the 1950’s /197o’s era when family’s had only one income and struggled to raise a deposit. Most married couples that want to get ahead both work and are prepared to give up a few luxury’s to achieve their dream.

Also in the 1950’s the prices were not rising by more in a single year, than what an average young person earns. Just how can “making sacrifices” be expected to compensate for that?
  
  Actual data on spending patterns relative to income show that the current young are not spending more profligately. They get a lot more for their discretionary spending, thanks to market efficiencies, but that does not mean they are blowing their money faster. They are getting months of modern communications for the cost of one toll call in the 1950’s, and months of entertainment for the cost of one movie ticket in the 1950’s.

    Oh, and the reality is that the price of the urban dirt underneath the house is the problem. The section, in the 1950’s, cost less than 1 year’s single income, with the actual house being another 2 years. Now the section is something like 6 times the dual income, with the actual house being another 3 times, if it is a new or near-new one.
    
    In the case of a 1950’s railway cottage today, the structure is worth virtually nothing but the urban dirt underneath it might be “worth” $1,500,000. This racket simply had never even entered anyone’s wildest dreams in the 1950’s.

  But in the 1950s-early 70s period the world was on the Bretton Woods Gold standard whereby 25 US dollars = 1 once of gold. With the quantity of money therefore essentially fixed, banks could only lend against money they had on deposit and couldn’t create money ex nihilo and charge you interest on it.
  
  As a result, people had to save for a deposit but they could then pay off a house in 5 years as they were sensibly priced and not constantly inflating as the banks created more money.
  
  So not only do we have banks creating money ex nihilo against a domestic base in order to buy houses, so called “Free trade” agreements now mean our housing stock can be hoovered up by money created out of thin air from anywhere in the world
  
  Of course, don’t expect the Politicians to tell you about this fact. They would sooner have you believe that the real reason your grandchildren can’t afford to buy a house is because we haven’t concreted over enough of our country.

Hon PAULA BENNETT: Well, we believe in property rights. The landlord owns the property, and if they wish it for themselves or their family then they have to give only 42 days’ notice, so yes.

In Metiria Turei’s socialist utopia, landlords would have no rights over properties they dare to own and rent out. All the power in the landlord/tenant relationship would be with the tenant. Is that REALLY where we want to be heading?

  They would have the right to install heat pumps and insulation and provide the electricity to run the heat pump at tropical island temperatures with no charge to the tenants.
  
  They would have the right to replace the carpets at their own expense when the tenants’ dogs scratch it up.
  
  They have the right to reduce rents.

Jesus H Christ. The supposed temporary road from Christchurch to Picton is a dogs breakfast. A fatal truck accident shut down the road north of Springs Junction for 10 hours diverting traffic through the Rahu Saddle to Reefton and then back through the Buller Gorge to link up with Murchison. That about 9 hours drive owing to traffic volume.

Just wait until the holiday tourist traffic. What will be a mighty pain in the arse is the virtually nil cell phone coverage through the middle.

There goes my holiday plans for the South Island.

Good news for those worried about global warming. The high temperatures were caused by El Nino, but now that that has moved off, temperatures have plummeted by one degree since the middle of the year.

Global average temperatures over land have plummeted by more than 1C since the middle of this year – their biggest and steepest fall on record.
The news comes amid mounting evidence that the recent run of world record high temperatures is about to end.
The fall, revealed by Nasa satellite measurements of the lower atmosphere, has been caused by the end of El Nino – the warming of surface waters in a vast area of the Pacific west of Central America.

We all knew there was an El Nino which causes abnormally high temperatures. Now that it’s gone, the temp has predictably dropped again, and may drop further.

Myles Allen of Oxford University says that by the time of the next big United Nations climate conference global temperatures are likely to be no warmer than the Paris COP in 2015.         Not entirely true. RSS and UAH do use some of the same satellites but they also use different ones. The satellites they each use also changes over time. Orbit decay , age etc.
        Most people recognise the Satelites are a more accurate form of measurement. The ground based thermometers are not that accurate. (Refer the science of Metrology)BEST did some site evaluation in the US which has improved things- although the measuring stations in the US are being slowly phased out and replaced with better ones.As for the rest of the world BEST just does adjustments via modelling….they didn’t go to each site.

        He says they are not as accurate as the thermometers on the surface.
        Compering the different version of RSS or UHA .show you how poorly they are at giving a coherent result.

Yes, it is possible to jam both radio and GPS signals.

Blocking control signals would deny a drone operator control over a drone, but it would not allow taking over control of the drone since the radio control signals are typically encrypted. Therefore the claim they can land the drone or send it back to where it came from is bullshit.

If the GPS is not blocked (a bit of screening would probably do that) then the drone could fly autonomously on GPS and still do its job. No problem.

If GPS is blocked there are numerous ways to still navigate the drone to where it needs to go (eg. simple video processing). These days high quality positioning/navigation technology is almost free.

  Actually recently demonstrated hacks can easily take over drones. Almost all use a rudimentary encryption scheme that is very easily penetrated and so it is indeed simple to take them over completely.

  To be fair, what I’ve seen in the past in the USA is that they appoint someone unrelated to a company, then that person does some favours for the company, and at the end of it moves on to work for that company as a reward after the appointment ends.

      You never know how things will turn out Griff. A mate of mine bought 2000acres of steep hill country not far from the Wairarapa coast nearly 30 years ago. It was covered in regenerating manuka & kanuka but he worked his guts out ending up with about 150 acres of reasonable pasture. All the fences were hotwired to keep out the wild pigs.
      
      He’s now semi-retired thanks to Wellington pighunters paying fees to hunt the area & the income from allowing beekeepers to harvest the manuka honey.
