Interesting comparison. Pack and Save V Countdown supermarkets and self service. Seems Countdown take the biscuit or is it the money. They have installed a battery of self sevice checkout machines, thus doing away with a lot of hard working employees. The trick here is the shopper not only do their own checks and bag as well, just like a defacto” Pack and Save”. At least in Pack and Save the shopper gets cheaper groceries,where in Countdown they pay through the nose and do their own check out,saving the Australian owned Supermarket mega dollars,all paid for by the sucked in shopper,doing the work of once paid employees.

  No one says you have to use the self service checkouts. Your argument also falls down since many New World supermarkets also have self service checkouts and yet they are upmarket compared with their Pak ‘n’ Save cousins.
  Self service checkouts are not suitable for a high volume shop but are handy for low volume shops when the conventional checkouts are busy. In Australia both Coles and Woolworths have self service checkouts including the Woolworths owned Big W variety stores.

    Maybe not, except there are a lot more so called self service machines in Countdown than check out operators. The point being made is, Pack and Save shoppers ,score with cheaper groceries,where in Countdown they pay more for less service,having to bag and do their own price checkout.

      Hastings pak and save also has superior service when you do go through checkout. They properly staff their checkout so the wait is never long. Everytime I go to Countdown I regret it because I always have to wait such a long time in a queue. Also, Countdown Hastings is rundown and grotty.

    Have to pay more to keep staff. In our local Countdown they list many Managers but why are their few staff on checkout ?
    
    Everything in Countdown is packed elsewhere and delivered by truck – no butchers for example all pre packed – WYSWIG.

  Countdown is a more dignified shopping experience any day and worth a bit of extra money.
  Pak n Save is overpopulated with smelly welfare types in old wrecks of cars buying their weekly dose of brisket and bacon bits.

    Our pak n save has a gourmet meat bar that puts Farro fresh/Nosh to shame. plus a deli that’s on par as well.
    Also has a tremendously good fish bar, super fresh at great prices.
    
    Personally, I find the produce and meat on sale at countdown overpriced and of average quality.

      In my personal experience from two different P’nS stores and three different Countdown stores, ‘fresh’ produce items from Countdown – fruit & vegies, meat, fish – tend to have a lower ‘freshness’ standard than those of P’nS.
      
      A major concern of mine with supermarket produce is the trend to pre-packing of fruit & vegies in plastic bags. The produce sweats, and deteriorates more quickly.

    I drive past 3 Crim operation Countdowns to go to Pak n Save once a month now.
    
    The New Mogadishu one in New North Rd, AKl in
    D. Shearer country is not worth it but the Royal Oak is fine and damn quick service . I guess being in Sudan Shearer will feel at home.
    
    Countdown in Eden Qtr is a New Delhi slum with Dehli standard of service. They even try to rip you off on price they are so used to it. A habit that won’t go away.
    Crim countdown are clueless on service.
    Gimme NZ owned please.
    
    The New Worlds in Wellington are excellent, bright, clean and quick.

  Countdown gives the shopper a much wider variety and choice of goods – arguably accounting for the higher prices. My wfe shops at Pak’n’Save, but I always buy from Countdown when I do buy stuff because of the choice, and a much better user-friendly layout and racking.

  I commented to one of the staff manning a checkout at Countdown that the self-serve machines would probably do people out of a job? And she said that there weren’t enough people wanting to do the job anyway…
  
  I think, in this day and age, that many people think such a job is below them. They all want to go directly into I.T jobs or other work where they can sit at a desk and make lots of money.

  In light of that statement, this might be of interest. In the not-so-small rural town in which I live, there are the following supermarkets: Fresh Choice, Countdown, New World and Four Square (actually two of the latter). Fresh Choice and Countdown are, for all intents and purposes, one and the same organisation, while New World and Four Square share a similar relationship.
  
  I do the family shopping and definitely go chasing the bargains – it saves money.
  
  Over time, a list of specific items (Coffee, Cheese, Milk, Yoghurt etc.) has evolved and, as these items are common to all these stores, I use this list to get comparative prices prior to starting to shop. I have been doing this for the past five years, and have kept records over that time to see exactly which of these chains is cheapest and which the dearest.
  
  The results are interesting: In order of ‘cheapness’ and IMHO ‘Best Value for Money’, the list reads as follows:
  
  1. Countdown.
  2. Fresh Choice*
  3. New World*
  4. Four Square
  
  * Despite being in direct competition with each other, Fresh Choice and New World seem take it in turns to raise and lower their prices; the reasons for this being totally unknown.
  
  Four Square is on a similar pricing-level to local dairies and petrol stations and is only used ‘If all else fails’.
  
  Two Pak-n-Saves are available in a nearby city, but I have found that (a) the prices are not that much cheaper than C’down’s (especially if the price of petrol and vehicle wear and tear are factored in) and the ‘quality’ of food purchased there does not meet with family approval; it doesn’t pass the ‘Taste Test’ when compared with the C’down products. Pak’-‘Save is part of the New World / Four Square chain and a they share common product lines this also applies to local purchases. Their ‘in house’ brand is not favourably received, seeming to indicate that ‘Cheapness’ does not necessarily equate with quality.
  
  The information I have just presented, would seem to put the lie to your assertion about the ‘greediness’ of Coles / Woolworths (C’down) vis a vis New World etc. and on that basis I can only suggest that perhaps the pricing structures are different where you live – or that you don’t like Australians?
  
  In respect of the ‘self-service ‘ systems in place in C’down and Pak-n-Save (the latter being NZ-owned BTW, NOT Australian, which would seem to negate your point somewhat), might I suggest that their advantage is essentially one of ‘speed’, as they reduce the time customers have to wait to pass through a check-out. Despite what some might like to think, the average user of such devices gives little thought to the number of jobs that a machine has replaced; they are more interested in getting the shopping finished so that they can go onto other tasks. The machines are certainly supervised (they do occasionally fail) but so long as they do the job, absolutely no one cares about lost employment; that is the unfortunate reality.
  
  If however you are still concerned about these machines (and they have been around for at least 5 years in NZ) might I suggest ttht you write to the BoD’s of both Countdown / Fresh Choice AND New World / Pak-n-Save/ Four Square and express your views to them.
  I’m sure you will receive a good hearing.

  He’s pardoned more crims than the 9 previous Presidents combined. And to do something as destructive as sponsoring the Israel settlement resolution during the inter-regnum is just disgusting and now there’s talk of imposing ‘sour grapes’ sanctions on the Russians for the ‘fake news’ unsubstantiated ‘interference’ in the election. (No one has explained how the Ruskies managed to make the Dems write and send all those incriminating emails though – I thought we liked ‘sunshine’ and ‘openness’ and ‘disclosure’ – silly me those things don’t apply to socialists!)

    – everyone expected Trump to lose
    – the Democrats were supposed to have an unassailable advantage in the electoral college
    – the Obama coalition of Blacks and gays and Hispanics and women was supposed to guarantee the Democrat presidency in perpetuity
    – no one cared about white men any more, especially working class white men, they were irrelevant
    – Hillary was the best prepared and most well funded candidate in history according to media reports.
    
    Given all that Donald Trump winning the presidency was the most stunning victory probably ever in American history. And he won easily, gaining over 300 votes in the electoral college.
    
    It is a landslide in that the Republican party is now in its strongest position since 1922, holding the presidency, the Senate and the Congress and the majority of governors and at state level Republicans are dominant in many more states.
    
    In these first hundred days Trump is going to be able to get stuck in and do things that conservatives have been wanting to do for years.
    
    It is a landslide in that the Democrat party is utterly bewildered and still believes that its defeat is due to Russian hacking and the FBI under James Comay. And they think that the best way to win back the American electorate is to nominate a Muslim to lead the party. Long may they continue in their delusion.

Nukuleka– Quite agree. Hillary won the popular vote by piling up votes in places like California and New York and Washington DC. Particularly in California she won by something like 1 million votes. But California was never a battleground state. California is now a Democrat state with huge numbers of illegal immigrants probably voting. The Republicans never contested California.

Whereas outside of California Trump did really well and the key was he won in battleground states like Wisconsin which Hillary did not bother to visit because she believed she had already won it.

The whole campaign of the Democrats was fatally flawed.

By the way the President of the United States is decided through the electoral college not the popular vote. The Democrats knew that but they stuffed it up big time.

As for myself I am looking forward to a Trump presidency. It’s going to be big-league!

Although I did see some figures awhile ago showing Russia only gets 20% of its Govt Tax a Revenue from oil and gas which seems lower than the 50% often quoted.
        I think the Ukraine has been cut off though…
        Russia does seem to be painted as the big bogeyman at the moment.

        Ponder this: If the USA should not fear Russia as you imply, why has the US has been so timid in challenging Russia’s aggressive moves in Ukraine and Syria over the last couple of years? Even the current nuclear arming of Kaliningrad, which will directly impact NATO in the Baltics next year when the nukes are fully operational, has caused barely a stir. You’d think the only world superpower would be able to prevent such a change in status quo … Maybe when Trump realises what is going on he’ll authorise a strike on the nuclear facilities in Kaliningrad, just to show the Russians who’s boss. It is an absolute tradgedy that Kipling’s poetry was deemed “offensive” to the Social Justice Warriors who began tightening their grip on the cultural and informational media of the English-speaking world in the 1960s—obnoxious and dangerous. Actually, the whole spirit of Kipling’s writing was dangerous to them, totally at odds with the new spirit they were promoting so assiduously, but they could not simply ban all further publication of his works. We wouldn’t be witnessing the slow motion tragedies that are unfolding across Europe

What they did instead was take measures to have dropped from new editions of his collected writings those of his poems and stories which expressed most explicitly the spirit and the ideas they feared: the spirit and the ideas of proud, free White men. Today every school child still reads a bit of Kipling’s poetry: such things as “Mandalay” and “FuzzyWuzzy” and “Gunga Din,” which superficially seem safely in tune with an age of multiculturalism and “affirmative action” and White guilt.

Since Israel and the UN resolution seems to still be a hot topic I might as well throw in my 2 cents worth.
The time I have spent in cosmopolitan parts of Israel have been fabulous and as enjoyable as anywhere else on this planet but I have also been extensively through the “territories” and have seen the ugly side of this country.
People harp on about Israel being the only democratic free country in the Middle East and while true it is all a matter of judgement and opinion.
While in the territories myself and wife were on the receiving end of the following:
1.Spat at more then once
2.Verbally abused and threatened with violence
3.Had rocks thrown at us

Why?????
Simply because we were not religious settler Jews and we were in their neighbourhood and were not welcome.
These people are the scum of the earth in my experience and I have not one good thing to say about any of them or their supporters and when I say supporters I mean some of the top political figures in past and current governments who champion this filth.
Even when you talk to many secular Israelis about these people they can’t stand them either as most are on government welfare and do stuff all for society on the whole.
So if people think the Palestinians are the only shitty hateful people in this area you need to think again as these cretins are as bad as anyone anywhere.

Yesterday, EAD said something to the effect that he couldn’t believe that such civilised people as the Germans could possibly have killed civilians enmasse as they are known to have done so during WWII, citing the Holocaust as impossible because of the good character of the Germans he knows. Most likely because more than half the people killed in the Holocaust were Jews, EAD has a massive blind spot, as after all, he blames Jews for Communism.

I think, EAD you really need to gain a wider perspective with regards to German atrocities during WWII. The German occupation of Poland abounds with examples of atrocities, so many that if I posted a story every day of my life, I would still have more than enough to choose from.

So, here is one from the 1944 Warsaw Uprising towards the end of the war. Read it and tell me if you think this is the sort of thing that proves that Germans could never have gassed the Jews:

“We blew up the doors, I think of a school. Children were standing in the hall and on the stairs. Lots of children. All with their small hands up. We looked at them for a few moments until Dirlewanger ran in. He ordered to kill them all. They shot them and then they were walking over their bodies and breaking their little heads with butt ends. Blood streamed down the stairs. There is a memorial plaque in that place stating that 350 children were killed. I think there were many more, maybe 500.”

Witness testimony of Mathias Schenk, an 18-year old Belgian served as Sturmpionier (assault engineer) in Wehrmacht during the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Members of his unit were assigned to various SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger platoons as demolition engineers.

  I think the argument is about the exaggerated actions of the Nazis – in the sense of numbers killed and also in the sense of the saturation level coverage/obsession in Western pop culture such as the Progressive agitprop coming out of Hollywood.
  
  In contrast there is a deafening silence about Communism and its exterminatio n of 10s OF MILLIONS. Worse, Leftists openly praise Communism, openly associate themselves with its ideas and leaders with ZERO fear of having their jobs, careers or personal lives destroyed.
  
  And yet Communists have A LOT more blood on their hands, their cruelty and fanaticism arguably is WORSE than the Nazis.
  
  After all the Nazis got their big idea for concentration camps off the Communists gulags.
  
  Communism had been in operation for at least a decade before the Nazis began their rise. It is obvious they saw what the Communist Jewish mass murders were doing in Russia – exterminating entire social strata ie “Class enemies” and this compelled them towards the Final Solution for the Jewish Problem.

    That might be your argument, but it doesn’t seem to be EAD’s. He does get people running interference for him half the time, so it’s difficult to pin him down on what he really believes and why.
    
    Just to be clear, I believe both the Nazis and the Soviets were inhuman monsters, and yes, the Soviets had many more years of killing than the Nazis managed. But that should not detract from the crimes of the Nazis, which when looked at from the perspective of occupied countries from Poland eastwards are not exaggerated at all – in fact, they are downplayed.

As the ultimate indigenous survivors, Israelis should be proud to celebrate our aboriginal rights in our national homeland, and help others to do the same.

Given the brute ugliness of its colonial past, New Zealand seems like an excellent place for the diplomats in Israel’s Foreign Ministry to try out a new model that puts solidarity with other indigenous peoples on an equal footing with traditional government-to-government relations. Israel might start by sending some of the money it cut from the aid budget to Senegal—which joined New Zealand in sponsoring the anti-Israel vote at the UN—to help the impoverished Maoris build the capacity to organize themselves politically against centuries of dispossession. In doing so, Israeli legal experts and others will hopefully help the Maori to erect a framework for negotiations that addresses the continuing European occupation of 4 million acres of Maori land that was seized by force in 1863, in defiance of legal treaty obligations. Israel might also do well to receive a Maori ambassador alongside the ambassador from Wellington, to represent Maori interests to Jerusalem…

      As someone who communicated with Ehud Barak back in 2000 – that the way forward from the failed talks was to improve relations with Israeli Arabs and give them a better place within their society and governance.         For instance, let’s consider a ‘friendly’ buffer country in the last century – Poland. Having been dismembered by the Russian Empire as lead dismemberer in the late 1700’s, spent over the next 100 odd years split between 3 empires, only to come back into existence in 1918. At war with Russia (the USSR) in 1919 to 1921. Russia tried to invade Europe through Poland, but was pushed back by the Poles. Peace until 1939 when Russia invaded again, this time with the Germans. Occupied half the country until 1941 when the Germans pushed east and turned on their partners. Invaded again in 1945 and occupied Poland until 1989.
        
        27 years since the last Russian occupation, and you wonder why people in the region are on edge.

I have just finished reading a piece by international commentator Leon Aron, of whom I had never heard of before.
He writes about a flash point in the world named Narva, a city in far eastern Estonia.
It is on the Russian border with a predominant Russian speaking population.
Then he goes on about how Putin considers the Cold War loss of 1989-90 as Germans consider the Treaty of Versailles.
Then he asks what would happen if Putin annexed Narva, just as he annexed Crimea. That made me think of the Sudetenland, circa 1938 and all that.
Narva is a place name you should store in your memory; it might become pivotal in world affairs.
Also, it was the birthplace of noted N.Z. chess champion, Ortvin Sarapu.

We went to see Wings Over the Wairarapa yesterday.

There were gasps of “Ooh” & “Aah” as the crowds watched on in amazement.

Near miss after near miss had some people covering their eyes & shaking their heads in disbelief.

It was a good hours entertainment but in the end my wife finally managed to park the car & we made our way into the air show.

Interesting article in The Atlantic in which liberal academics wring their hands about the fact that increasingly unarguable genetic evidence of racial differences may cause the general public to believe that the races are genetically different. The horror!
