Has there been any word as yet from Bill English about the gigantic cock-up in co-sponsoring the UN anti-Israeli resolution, or is he still hoping the issue will blow away in the New Year wind?

    It may have escaped your notice that all the other members of the Security Council, with the exception of the US, voted in the same way as New Zealand. Leaving aside the morality of the whole thing, who would you rather piss off? The UK, France, Russia, China etc. or a small country in the Middle East? The vote was consistent with New Zealand’s position for years and I am astonished that so many people seem to be surprised by it. Why is it only now that you guys are getting up in arms? Was something so obviously important to you a mystery to you until now?

      It is the co sponsorship not the vote that is causing the uproar Fernglass. Aligning New Zealand with Communist Venezuala is unacceptable to most New Zealanders.
      
      Add to that the fact that McCully seems to have acted without Cabinet approval and the whole situation is untenable.

They run Gaza now that the Israelis dismantled the settlements they had there. And Hamas showed their gratitude by ceasing all warlike activities against Israel!

        The UN has recognised the borders as those existing in 1949 and has not any time since changed its position. Thus its consistent opposition to any settlement building in areas occupied since 1967. Thus this has always been the starting point for peace talks – a fact recognised by both parties in peace efforts since 1967, from Oslo Accord on.

    I am deeply saddened to read in the media the vitriolic comments about the State of Israel.
    It is obvious that the comments are media led with no consideration to the history of the present day Israel.
    What is surprising is the people coming out of the woodwork- many of them have never made any comment all their lives but are being led by the media.
    When almost every other country from Pakistan westwards has avowed to annihilate the UN (League of Nations) legally constituted country of Israel.
    It could all be ended if these many countries, particularly those of formerly Transjordan, who now call themselves in the name of the State of Palestine would stop escalating war in the name of Islam. Stop sending in rockets and you can expect no retaliation.
    There is no such a state nor ever has been. of Palestine – it is a region once called Transjordan, but changed by the warring states surrounding Israel.

  The Dept of Homeland Security and the FBI have now released a joint 13 page report which confirms the position that Russia was involved. That probably accounts for Trump’s recent backtracking, although he has promised to produce evidence on “Tuesday or Wednesday” that may show things in a different light. I will be interested to see it. As for seeing the evidence, of course Trump would have access to it if he bothered to have his security briefings, although it is probably too sensitive to be released to proles like us.

    Some interesting disclaimers at the beginning of that report.
    Look I don’t think there is any doubt that the Russians, Chinese and others actively engage in cyber espionage. They’ve been doing it for years.
    But I am sceptical about the DNC event. Wikileaks is adamant it wasn’t Russia. They are not known to lie.
    I reckon it’s more likely a leak, not a hack. There’s plenty of Bernie supporters inside the DNC who might have been motivated to leak, given the contents leaked…
    We will see. As for Podesta, a phishing attack? Really? Hardly sophisticated.

The difference is: will the mainstream media cover the leaks / hacked information? The answer is a big fat yes. In the case of Hillary or whoever their favourite messiah is, the answer is a big fat no, and it will depend on “new media” and social networking to get the facts out.

  There are people who have spent time in prison for crimes they did not commit. Two examples are Peter Ellis and Teina Pora. There are more. There are others whose convictions are very unsafe. I do not believe that Allan Titford is one of them. However, I suggest others judge for themselves after viewing the video I have linked to at the end of this post.
  
  I say those supporting Titford are undermining a very worthwhile lobby group namely Hobson’s Pledge. I hope those who disagree with me to view the video first.

    Thanks, Chuck, I will stay open-minded on this. I still think Titford’s experiences over his land, would unhinge a lot of good men. Like I said, there is a long story needing to be told. The left are very selective over who they show “compassion and understanding” to. Lotta violent people aren’t put away as efficiently as Titford has been.

        I believe that people should be able to be convicted of forced sex in marriage. However, it should be forced sex not a woman say she is tired or has a headache and giving in.
        
        The rape is just one thing. The idea that the 24 years was so outrageous does not help. I presume it was appealed. Does he expect the public to accept that level of political interference in the High Court and the CoA?
        
        There are cases of judges going soft on people in position of influence. However, they are rarely appealed. It is a different matter for a judge to give a extremely severe sentence due to government interference and for more government interference with the CoA.

I understand it is almost automatic that one gets to appeal sentence as they usually have nothing to lose.         For example, I can’t tell who is more deluded: someone who believe wine and crackers magically transform into blood and flesh, or someone who thinks medicine becomes stronger the more it is diluted.

      Given that some of the founding fathers were deists, the US constitution begins ‘We the people…’, does not mention God, and the Bill of Rights’ first article forbids the government from passing laws concerning religion, I’m a bit sceptical of the Bible basis claim – but I’m no expert on this matter, so feel free to correct me.
      
      I would have guessed that the basis of US government was a mix of English common law, Magna Carta and the 1689 Bill of Rights in combination with the thinking of Montesquieu, John Locke and other enlightenment figures.
      
      Yes, there is a difference between the US and French revolutions. US revolutionaries appear very much to be practical men with experience in state government and influenced by the English enlightenment, which tended towards incremental pragmatism rather than fervent ideological purity. On the continent, some French revolutionaries were influenced by utopians such as Rousseau.
      
      Unfortunately, utopians from Robespierre to Pol Pot to ISIS have often been all too willing to break as many eggs as necessary to make an omelet, however small.

(Taine Rory Mhor ) Taine Ruaridh Mhor (the big cattle farmer) was delivered by three seagoing longships (birlinns?) to NZ in the 12th Century, with 95 of his family and kinfolk and followers. This would have been probably just after the reign of King Alexander III of Scotland (reigned 1249-1286) and during the reign of Edward I of England. He invaded Scotland in 1296. This was a turbulent time in Scotland. It was the time of Wallace, of Bruce, the battles of Stirling Bridge and Falkirk. The execution of Wallace and eventually the Coronation of Robert the Bruce and leading up to the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Times perhaps when no-one had the time or resources to maintain communication with kinfolk a world away. So back to the story.

    However, history, for much of the world, is only as good as archeological exploration so far, plus the reliability of primitive people’s record-keeping and story-telling.
    
    The Polynesian populating of NZ is entirely likely to have been a matter of gradual waves of arrivals, partly accidental, and it is also likely that ships accidentally made it here from goodness knows where else, going back millennia. Dying out and being exterminated was the natural condition of small human settlement in those times, including even of tribes of Polynesians at the hands of one another.
    
    Bottom line: no-one made Aotearoa anything more than Terra Nullius until the British Crown.

Turkish police have released the first picture of the prime suspect in the Istanbul nightclub attack, as the gunman remains on the run.

  So who benefits from this attack? Erdogan sure doesn’t. Interestingly there were stories in Turkish papers the days leading up to NY day reminiscent of the posters that were put up in Dallas threatening JFK (which was a psyop to make people think a right-wing patriot type group did it, but would such a group advertise?)
  
  My guess is that one purpose of the attack was to punish Erdogan and Turkey for breaking ranks with NATO and pushing through the recent Syria peace initiative with Russia and Iran. The neocon-Zionist-hardliner wing of NATO has been furious with Erdogan since he went off the reservation on Syria last year; that’s why they used the Gladio network, and its CIA-Mossad asset Fethullah Gulen, to try to overthrow Erdogan in the failed coup attempt.
  The New Year’s Eve terror attack happened just 48 hours after the U.N. backed the Russia-Iran-Turkey peace initiative. Obviously NATO was unhappy that it was sidelined; and even unhappier that it has lost the war. Blaming and punishing Turkey, the NATO member that deserted the coalition and went over to the side of the enemy, would be a natural response.
  
  Additionally, these NATO forces have every reason to keep trying to overthrow Erdogan, both to set an example to others who might be tempted to buck NATO discipline, and to replace the Turkish President with someone who would more reliably follow orders.

In 1862 Robertsons Bone mill came to the Kaipara and paid workers to collect the bones on this peninuslar
fortunately the Armed Constabulary was based at Te Kopuru where they counted the skulls in each sack going on their records which still exist they counted over 60.000 skulls collected mainly from the feasting sites and cave sites. Fortunately they did not collect them all. As my grandfather was the original waggoner around the area and new of many cave sites still retaining bones.Some years ago I was at a conference down country where one of the speakers was a forensic pathologist with some 60 years of experience after the conference he had some spare time and came up here and I took him around to a number of sites where he examined many remains -he was taken aback about the Trepaning in a lot of the skulls and asked what are they doing here.When he went back to the UK he took with him an eyetooth and bones fragments and 18 months later thru DNA etc he established these peoples originated in Wales 3500 years ago — Noel Hilliam

Following yesterday’s Kiwiblog question about the background of Kaileshan Thanabalasingham, the injured secretary of the Refugee Council of NZ Inc., the following links may interest some, even if the MSM are either uninterested or are all far out of it – pissing up at the beaches.

It’s a Canadian court decision upholding the Canadian Minister of Immigration’s decision to deport one KAILESHAN THANABALASINGHAM, a Sri LankanTamil gang leader in Toronto.

The second link is to an internet page alleging that Canadian police believe one Kaileshan Thanabalasingham became leader of the Torontto Tamil Hindu gang, Valvettithurai (but usually known just as “VVT”) in 1997.

This internet link (the second site linked to below, a rather different category from the court report – it’s the Rap Dictionary) also alleges that Canadian police believe VVT members have “have been traditionally known to be heavily involved in drug trafficking, human smuggling, fraud, weapon trafficking, counterfeiting and extortion.”

    Someone wondered if the East Asian use of kanji characters with their sometimes complex and critical pattern differences might predispose East Asian cultures to do well in the spatial sections of IQ tests.
    For example, when I read the characters for “left” or for “right”, they are superficially the same, but the key detail is a radical that only accounts for about a quarter of the characters’ area.       Odakyu-sen, it’s a bit of a side issue, but when you mention characters for “left” and “right” are you aware that there are a few tiny languages in diverse parts of the world that don’t have words for “left” and “right” or even have concepts of “left” and “right”?
      
      These people orient things and themselves by reference to an external object, usually for a tribe a prominent geographical feature.
      
      It isn’t totally stupid. They don’t need to know which way you are facing to have the correct orientation of “left” and “right”.
      
      Regarding your reference to Asian language word-letters: could it be that these bring the right side of the brain more into play more than alphabet writing systems do?

    Take the whole interpretation of NZ Colonial era history and the Treaty, for example. Sir Apirana Ngata’s book on the Treaty, should be regarded as gospel. Instead, no-one has heard of it and it is down the Orwellian Memory Hole. Same for the recorded comments of Maori Chiefs at the Kohimarama Conference of 1860.

Melbourne landlord installs coin-operated toilet in tenant’s apartment

A Melbourne landlord has been blasted online after a tenant revealed he had installed a coin-operated toilet in the house, requiring the tenants to pay per flush. The stingy landlord and owner of an apartment property in Thornbury has reportedly equipped the toilet with a mechanism that means residents have to pay A$1 ($1.04) to flush the dunny.

Unsure about the legality of such a contraption, the tenant posted the story on forum-based social media website reddit to ask the community if the landlord was allowed to do this. … Such is the ridiculousness of the coin-operated toilet that the post was initially removed because reddit moderators on the Melbourne subreddit didn’t believe the story was true. But the tenant has since posted proof of the situation by sharing a picture of the toilet and the post has been republished.

Presumably the landlord visits fairly often to empty the coin tray…

Erdogan and Putin have done a deal whereby al Nusra and the Kurds are marginalised as terrorists along with Islamic State.

And they have had UN sign off for this. Given the Kurds are the main group fighting IS in Syria an interesting development. Another betrayal of them and one we on the UNSC went along with. Shameful.

    In this case it reflects a deal whereby Turkey abandons al Qaeda in Syria a partner to groups they have supported.
    
    Thus a cease-fire in which Assad’s forces can single out al Nusra (no bad thing) – in return Turkey is free to turn on Kurds in Syria during the cease-fire. Hiowever the Kurds are working with Arab partners and closing in on Raqqa and have always been to the forefront to defeating IS in Syria (given the government was focused on matters westward and Turkey was uninterested in even closing the border to militants coming in to join IS).
    
    The new Turkish arrangement provides Turkey with legitimacy to their intention to backstab the Kurds. And thus restrict options for defeat of IS to Turkish military occupation of this area of Syria. This will hamper planning for the defeat of IS in Syria after the taking of Mosul, when this was on track without any Turkish involvement.
    
    Labelling the Syrian Kurds a terrorist group has always been part of the appeasement of Turkey in NATO, but the very real alliance with them against IS is indicative of a different reality. One
    that Turkey is determined to end – and the UNSC in sanctioning the Russian-Turk cease-fire has aided and abetted them in this.

This 121k excludes all those not receiving care, a full 72 years after the end of WWII, and, when accounting for those already deceased, means there were a fair few “holocaust” survivors from the Nazi occupied Europe Pre War Jewish population of 5.5 million!

    Sorry, I’m not really understanding your point here. Are you disputing that he escaped? Or are you implying that 121,000 survivors also escaped? Or are you saying something else?

    Pilecki was sick with typhoid and pneumonia while in Auschwitz and did not receive hospital or even medical care there. The facilities at Auschwitz were mostly for the up to 7000 SS men who were stationed there. Except for the hospital which also was for medical experiments on the prisoners. Prisoners who were too sick to work got phenol injections. They did not get care in hospital.
    
    You’re right, for Pilecki who survived Auschwitz and was able to escape, the tortures of the Stalinist prison were far worse. And they did kill him at the end with a shot to the back of head.
