Weather variation on our planet can be described with a rough bell-shaped curve. So-called normal weather is very common while extreme weather is rare. While events close to normal occur frequently, in the broad center of the curve, there is a sharp fall-off in the frequency of events further away from normal, in the flatter ends of the curve. For instance, a small increase in temperature shifts the entire curve toward hotter high temperatures. The rarest and most extreme record heat events become even more severe and much more frequent. Precipitation does not follow quite the same pattern, but the same concept applies: fewer light and moderate rains are being replaced by more heavy rain events.

  It would help if the MSM stopped giving us fake news and started reporting on the hundreds (at least) of well-credentialled dissenting scientists and the dozens (at least) per year of papers with contrary conclusions – this in spite of a disturbing degree of institutional coercion.
  
  Loss of credibility on the part of the MSM is entirely justified, and where and when it has not occurred, it is overdue. No-one is a “believer” because they are smarter and more sophisticated, they are believers because of ignorant-sucker group dynamics.

      I have been a skeptic since the publication of the charlatans hockey stick graph in 2000.
      
      Trump is a belated encouragement on the political front, not a “leader” of my opinion. I welcome his appointment of “deniers” to top positions, I welcome the course of action of that “denier”, Scott Pruitt, in replacing departmental heads with fellow “deniers”, and I eagerly anticipate the flood of whistle-blowers from among the science and bureaucratic rank and file who have endured years of being coerced into silence and complicity over fraud and malfeasance.
      
      It is revealing to say the least, that there was allegedly “only a handful of deniers on the fringe of science”, but Pruitt et al are having no difficulty finding hundreds of well qualified people to appoint to the positions they deserve. The “handful on the fringe” thing was never anything more than fake news.

Did our population stagnate? Silt that bad in a city that’s supposed to be in the top 25 in the world?

        Watercare are the guys but the nimby’s don’t want a new station to treat water.
        
        And if you think that’s bad wait just you wait until the King and his advisors have a bit of grunt in the Round House. Then the Waikato river and all its water will be subject to another rort in favour of the special people of the North Waikato and the water will be taxed every time it goes through a power generator and when it runs down the pipe to the Water Care station for the Auck.’s to consume.

        If you were allowed rainwater tanks there wouldn’t be any issue with the amount of water you can use. Plenty of the sweet water falling out of the sky!

      No extreme weather events noted in the course of human history, of course.
      
      This raises an interesting point. “History” traditionally involves learning about dates, people’s names, recorded events, etc. But a certain type of person politically, avoids all that by learning “the Marxist dialectic” instead. The thing that matters about “history” is reduced to “who was oppressing who”.
      
      The thing that matters about the Vikings, say, is that they were white Aryans, patriarchical, misogynists and rapists. It is superfluous to the Marxist dialectic, that the Vikings crossed the northern Atlantic when it was ice-free, discovered “Greenland” while it was green, settled it, and then were frozen out and perished a couple of centuries later as the climate changed.
      
      Hannibal crossing certain Alpine passes to invade Rome by surprise from the North, while those passes were ice-free, is another example. So is Chinese explorers sailing through an ice-free Bering Strait and charting much of the northern coastline of what became Russia. So is the recorded growing of grapes and other fruit at northern latitudes during certain phases of time.
      
      Historical knowledge is what made me an instant skeptic when the “hockey stick” graph was published in 2000. It was merely a matter of time and waiting, for the exposure of the fraudulent methods by which that graph was devised. If you knew your history, you knew it was fraudulent and needed independent auditing.
      
      That it took so long for McIntyre and McKittrick to even get the data, was prima facie evidence that the fraudsters KNEW they had something to hide. Hiding the data and the calculations, is a matter of routine among the “science” community that has the bureaucratic funding and the agenda – a colossal give-away that the fraud is a matter of deliberate aforethought.

        “Extreme” is obviously a relative measure. Relative to what, where and when? On what basis was the control selected? Do extremes occur everywhere or just in some places? If so, how come? If there are less extremes occurring than the control, then does this suggest AGW is not occurring?
        
        I guess they’ll just trot out the usual “99.9% of scientists agree….” line, which, of course, is not an answer, nor is it science.

Just a couple of things:

Did the person she had the meeting with at TVNZ actually say that she would not be getting Hoskings’ salary because she was a woman?

You can’t tell from the quote above.

I simply cannot believe TVNZ (of all employers) would say or imply this. If ‘things have moved on from a decade ago’, I would have thought they would have moved on in the form of equal pay, a living wage, separate toilets for LGBT, Muslim prayer rooms etc – going on the fact they allow staff to run Labour Party campaigns on the premises.

Was the meeting minuted?

If not, then if I were TVNZ I would be consulting my legal team, because Mau is making a serious allegation of illegal employment practice.

Could the person mentioned have laughed in Mau’s face (about the lack of pay equity) because her predecessor was paid more than the programme could sustain?

Could they have laughed in her face because she just didn’t have the pulling power of Hosking? (She doesn’t)

I think Mau has outed herself as a Difficult Employee. I wouldn’t hire her, personally.

  There are several myths going on here.
  
  Myth one is women are paid less because they’re women.
  
  I’ve spent my entire working life – 30 years and counting- in or consulting for corporates on process improvement or IT projects. I’ve analysed employee pay scales hundreds of times because it’s part of calculating ROI for proposed improvements. I have never come across an award which discriminates on sex or orientation or race grounds. I have never come across actual pay records which do that, either.
  
  “There is nothing so vigourously defended as a vested interest disguised as an intellectual conviction” is an axiom I see play out all the time in every arena of human activity.
  
  Imagine how embarassing it would be to them were the Ministry of Women’s Affair to conduct a study which found out, actually, there was no pay gap.
  
  We all know you can design surveys and questionaires and ministerial enquiries that give you any answer you require.
  
  Imagine how embarassing for the consultants/employees who did the MoWF’s report on this if that was the conclusion. Do you think the Ministry would hire them again, or promote the involved employees?
  
  That axiom operates both at an individual’s and at a group level and it does so normally, subconsciously. You find the answer you’re looking for, unless you’re self-aware enough to recognise that may happen in yourself and you take conscious action to prevent it, and that hardly ever happens.
  
  Of course it may well be the case a gap exists, but the real question, as always, is why. And the suggestion it’s done for reasons of conscious institutional discrimination across the entire economy in every single industry, is fucking nuts.
  
  And yet this is exactly where this debate is heading, ably assisted by an idiot media full of people way overpaid with bloated egos and lightweight intellects who wouldn’t recognise cognitive dissonance in themselves even if it were painted green and waving its arms at them in the mirror as they brushed their teeth in the morning.
  
  Myth two is that media personalities “invite” people in and therefore deserve their ridiculous salaries. But that’s a complete other story.

    Trump is right about “fake news”, and the MSM is thrashing around in denial as their viewers abandon them in favour of sources they can trust.
    
    Where are NZ’s alternatives to the wall-to-wall PC propaganda from the MSM? Kiwis could do worse than to follow some of the good US alternative sources, get their minds opened, and maybe discover for themselves, the NZ-ers who are dishonestly being relegated to the margins of political discourse.

      They have tried to stir up older people against younger people over superannuation – with a significant lack of facts and little mention that the eligibility age moved up by Five years from 1991 to 2001. Fact Free zone.
      
      Then they have tried to set male against female with more false stories.
      
      This is basic Marxism in action:- divide and rule or divide and conquer.
      Segment groups so they fight among themselves and are easier to control and manipulate.
      
      The British Marxists used this successfully in the 1960s and 1970s to set workers against the bosses and create strikes that left long term resentment. Then along came Maggie.

    Hosking talked about the media and fake news the other night, agreeing some NZ journalists were guilty of political bias and fake news. He said he had witnessed it himself. He said that journalists spreading fake news for their own agenda was an issue and a portion of the public had woken up to this fact and that knowledge was now spreading.

        1. No one, not media, politicians, researchers, academics, judges, jurors, bloggers are ever free of bias.
        
        2. Competence in media, research, the law, whatever is demonstrated by one’s ability to put aside, or at least acknowledge and take steps to curb one’s bias. Bias may also be present in the media as an editorial stance that is selective in terms of what is reported and what is not. That is legitimate, although for mainstream media there should at least be an attempt at breadth of coverage. But it should never go so far where the “facts” presented are knowingly false, i.e., fake news.
        
        3. Hosking didn’t claim he was immune from bias. According to waikatogirl, he claimed, in an industry in which he has experience and expertise, that bias and, more seriously, fake news were present.

      Kimbo, I largely agree. I only ask that all facts be given by our so called media so one can make up our own minds. When the media only report largely one side with an obvious bias it becomes increasingly difficult to take their news items seriously, let alone believe anything.

        Not sure “balance” as measured by fact reporting can ever be achieved as most people have a different idea of what it is. So even what is reported – and what is not – is an editorial choice/value judgement. Hence Kiwiblog makes no such pretence. And I think the multiplicity of media sources and the resulting decline of the MSM means that balance is available in a combined and contrasting variety of sources. But I don’t think any media is obligated to report a balance of facts. Instead they should decide what they consider is newsworthy…and consumers can decide if the particular news source is competent and interesting and reward and/or penalise them accordingly

  If she didn’t like what TVNZ offered her, she could have sold her services to another TV channel. Or the radio. Or the press.

    I wouldn’t say that. I would say that a significant majority of scientists with expertise in climate matters, do not believe that catastrophic climate change will result from human emissions. However, they are forced to keep quiet about it if they want to keep their jobs.
    
    Browsing a leaked copy of the IPCC Report Draft (I have done that) is very interesting. The people actually contributing and reviewing are NOT being represented by the final report and especially the “Summary for Policy Makers”. There is a cabal who were appointed by like-minded people in the initial set-up of the IPCC. These people in the key positions simply ignore what the “thousands of scientists” actually say, including reviewer comments.
    
    The whole process is opaque and secret, and it is only because of leaks that anyone can see for themselves what is going on. Of course the MSM’s “investigative journalists” extremely selective in the kind of leaks they are interested in.
    
    In the early days of the IPCC, it was discovered that US Official Information law required the release of IPCC Drafts and reviewers comments. So what did the IPCC do? Moved from New York to Geneva so the US laws didn’t apply. Yeah, this really, really sounds like people squeaky clean and with nothing to hide.

      So, not scientific at all. The presumption had been made that humans are changing the climate, and then once the money starting flowing there was no shortage of bureaucrats, scientists, lobbyists and other rent-seekers wanting to postulate on just how much, when and why. Just so long as their grant was forthcoming.
      
      The other thing about that ‘Summary for Policymakers’ is that its conclusions are sometimes diametrically opposed to the so-called science of the main report, more so recently as the confirmation-bias afflicted scientists have found it more difficult to torture the data in order to reach the ‘right’ conclusions.
      
      Canadian journalist Donna Laframboise has done a wonderful job of exposing the IPCC duplicity and, in many instances, bare-faced corruption in pursuit of a pre-determined political outcome.

  An employee was fined some years ago under the old legislation. He travelled about 50km to an electrical substation then realised he had not brought a suitable ladder so he improvised. He slipped and got a 33,000 volt shock which he survived (fortunately protective equipment similar to a RCD operated very quickly). He was successfully prosecuted by OSH and no action was taken against the employer. Apparently the employment relationship was already strained and he was too scared stiff to return to base to get the ladder.

        I’ve urged DARPA to pull the plug many times but apparently the Deep State want to keep pushing the envelope until they get a breakthrough, but as you can see for yourself, we’re nowhere near that.

Looks like Hone met his match on Thursday night when Chris Bishop showed NZ that the Leader of the Mana Party can lose his rag when fronted with some home truths. Hone and the inept Moderator Paddy Gower showed just how much they were out of their depth in what credibility they bought to their Party or employer in the debate.

  Talking of Hone, I had the misfortune of something taxpayer funded called “7 Days” being on TV quietly in the background last night and lo and behold Hone was their guest and the panellists gave him the bro handshake and laughed at his jokes denigrating the Govt (ya know an actual Govt that can run an economy and provide real employment) and how they laughed when Hone said this is the only show in which he can say “motherfxxker” on TV without getting into trouble which he did.
  
  Couldn’t help feeling Hone is well known as despising “honkies”, which presumably went over the adoring leftie panellists heads that most of them actually were!
  
  And to think the taxpayer funds this shit courtesy of NZ on Air?

      Fortunately I can’t whinge about the rest of Hone’s segment because the missus turned off the TV I think because she was tiring of me laughing my head off about Hone and the panellists antics and the incredulousness of the interview!

        It’s an unusual place where NZ’s finest comedians make limp wristed efforts in mocking people they align with politically but turn the sarcasm levels to high against people they don’t align with politically.
        
        Oh and although it didn’t occur on 7 Days (it was on another TV3 current affairs programme in which Jeremy Corbett and another comedian used to have a two minute slot taking the piss), the 7 Days host Jeremy Corbett gave a big up’s sign (as in “you da man”) in relation to Homebrew singer Tom Scott (ya know the guy that sang about raping John Key’s daughter).

Interesting interview on Stuff with a moderate, intelligent NZ Muslim, Hazim Arafeh.

Some of what he says is reasonable, but when it comes to women, the achilles heel of Islam, here is the writer, Anthony Hubbard, reporting the views of Mr Arafeh about Western critics of Muslim women’s facial coverings:

“They have misinterpreted the use of the burqa completely. The burqa or niqab is nothing more than extra protection that a woman may choose to use if she finds it necessary for her to protect herself.

“And it’s all related with the modesty and the humbleness that a Muslim woman should show when she gets out of her house. It’s not a prison at all.”

As a matter of fact, he says, “Islam is the first religion in the history of humanity which gave women rights”.

The Qur’an, Arafeh says, gives women equal rights to property, education and leadership.

Many Westerners will balk at this. Aren’t women in Saudi Arabia, for example, clearly second-class citizens?

Religion is one thing, he replies, and cultural traditions another.

That’s one even the raving Stephies haven’t used yet. The rapes in Sweden and Austria and Germany are “local customs”????

      The clear implication of this view is that women who don’t wear burqas are immodest, arrogant sluts just asking for it, that women are responsible for men’s actions.
      
      Pictures of urban women in Egypt, Afghanistan and Iran from 40 years ago show large numbers of them wearing western dress – short skirts and uncovered hair and faces. Now they don’t, and the change is mostly involuntary and oppressive for women.

    Disaster all round but then Little wants to build 100,.000 houses in the next ten years, which of course the taxpayer will pay for. You can make a voluntary donation to his cause if you fell strongly that you want Little and the State to do that.

      Don’t see where you’re coming from V2. I wouldn’t vote for Little & his queer mates for punishment but I fail to see how knocking out negative gearing is going to make any difference to what gets built.
      
      New home builds are normally for owner occupiers so wouldn’t be affected. Rental housing is normally sourced from existing stock in a process where suburbs change from people who have a pride in their own properties to run down hellholes of lowlife renters. There are exceptions but few.
      
      I admit that private home ownership is a hobby horse of mine but please explain what I’ve got wrong.

        242,000 jobs added in February 2016 were described as ‘disappointing’ by the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. That same congressman describes the 235,000 jobs added in February 2017 as a ‘good sign our economy is moving in the right direction’.
        Earlier job reports – 288,000 in June 2014 or 252,000 in December 2014 were described by the RNC (Preibus and Spicer) as ‘medicority’, or ‘it’s disappointing to realize that millions of our fellow Americans think the American Dream is slipping away.’ Today, they described the lower number as ‘great news for American workers’.

Clooney expressed frustration that nothing has happened since she came to the U.N. six months ago seeking accountability for victims of the Islamic State group, also known by the acronym ISIS and the Arab name Daesh.

For too long, the liberal left has been hiding behind a guise of compassion and inclusivity. They claim to care about the forgotten man and pretend to have tolerance for people of all backgrounds, races, religions and political beliefs. Yet, time and time again, their actions prove otherwise.

They portray themselves as open-minded members of society, but their tones quickly change when someone disagrees with them politically.

Dare to disagree with a liberal and you will often be faced by an intolerant, uncaring and sometimes even violent person.

A group of Trump supporters at the University of California-Berkley’s #March4Trump were quickly thrown into the middle of this liberal hypocrisy when attempting to peacefully exercise their First Amendment rights. Several of the Trump supporters ended up being assaulted, including an elderly man who collapsed to the ground, and a free speech sign and flags were photographed being burned.

Outrageous. This isn’t North Korea. But, unfortunately, what happened at Berkley serves as just another example of liberals claiming to be proponents of diverse thoughts and beliefs, while never actually following the tolerant words and ideas that they consistently preach.

        New ball due in about twenty overs, and they should only be leading by about 160 by that time. But it is a tough wicket to score quickly on, so any chase over 200 and with forecast weather interruptions, it will be hard. I always think, though, that South Africa, for all their talent, tend to be too conservative/risk averse. Is why they lose more often than not to Australia, even though on paper they have better teams.

It’d be good to pretend it might get better through the arvo, but sadly, for you, I fear it almost certainly won’t.

To save mm from having yet another sneer (because I care about him more particularly his face lest the wind change), I’ll explain why I’m doing this, what may appear to some, somewhat cruel posting series.

As many of us know to our peril, stephie has a habit of putting words in our mouths and pretending we have either said something we haven’t, or that because we have said something, that therefore, according to stephie, we therefore have to believe (whatever the hell he comes up with in that rats-nest he calls his own mind), and he proceeds to write his post as if that’s what we’ve actually said we really do believe.

I find this a totally outrageous debating “tactic” and I’m not the only one. As we know, Maggy has a simmering ongoing dispute with stephie, holysheet is another, I’m sure there are many others.

I have found it so outrageous that twice now I’ve lost my usual placid outlook and used the forbidden c word on him, knowing that it will probably earn me a ban, which it has.

But I don’t much like being banned, because I happen to think, as I daresay everyone here also thinks, that what I have to say is relevant and if pursued, would increase one’s understanding of the world. It’s not an ego thing, it’s a helping thing. (The apparent fact people here don’t much want my help, is not my problem. You will see as this year unfolds, how right I have been on the things I’ve been saying.)

But this is why I daresay, most people are here. They think their posts will amuse, enlighten, whatever, so why the hell not, it’s a free world.

But with a disruptive personality like stephie, which DPF is evidently either ignorant of in terms of his tactics, or unwilling to reign in; what is to be done by our community?

Humiliation is a wonderful social control mechanism. One of Tony Robbins’ tapes has the wonderful vignette that some people are so frightened of being humiliated via public speaking, they’d rather die. They prefer death to humiliation, he said.

No-one including me obviously, wants stephie to die. But we do need him to change his behaviour, period. End of discussion.

Don’t we.

Since he’s been here, making his trite and numberous daily gadfly droppings, the quality of debate has changed, and not in a good way. Half of it is about what the idiot has just said and why he’s an idiot. Who cares about this dummy, when the rest of us are looking at the most fundamental changes we’ve seen in the world since we were born. Some of you may not know it but what’s happening in the US and about to happen in the French election and what happened with Brexit, is as significant an adjustment in the global power base as the American and French revolutions were. And the last thing therefore we need on this channel at this monent is a profound idiot creating nothing more than what is essentially signal interference: the snow you used to see on the TV. That’s what he does.

Perhaps stephie can change. Certainly he needs to drop his execrable tactic which offends so many of us who have been victims of it. That’s the first thing he needs to do, bottom line. Now. Yesterday.

And perhaps he may even start making effective, penetrating insights. That’s optional, in my book. I happen to think he’s capable of it, because he clearly understands the left, more understanding of which would be most welcome here, certainly from me. (And note stephie and mm, this is not the first time I’ve said that about you stephie, lest you or mm think this is nothing but attacking you.) But that’s up to him, he like everyone here has the right to chose his style, his technique, his words, his contribution. Trite or significant, it doesn’t really matter.

So that’s why I’m doing this, and I’ll continue doing it, day after day, for as long as I feel like doing it.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Jacinda Ardern’s foray into DIY has been a flash in the pan after an Auckland resident complained that Labour’s deputy leader installed her own new toilet.

Justin Will complained to the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board in February after reading a media report that Ardern replaced her own toilet at the home she shares with television personality Clarke Gayford in Point Chevalier.

The board investigated and chief executive Martin Sawyers this week told Will that Ardern had apologised for her error and the case was closed.

In some parts of Auckland, including where Ardern lives, it is illegal to install a toilet unless the work is carried out by an authorised plumber.

Woke up this morning to News Talk ZB, Jamie Mackay’s morning roundup.

Angry was being interviewed and as much as I tried I could not follow what he was trying to talk about. He spoke so quickly on the verge of stuttering and did not give clear concise answers.

I know some who speaks in a similar fashion and that was the result of serious face trauma and a reconstruction of his lower jaw.

I just cannot see Angry on the world stage mixing with leaders such as Trump. He is just a joke….

    b. The council spent hundreds of thousands of rate payer money to persecute Stanton to keep the local old-boys-network and pricks-with-money, happy.

      From memory the horse was confiscated by the SPCA on the flimsiest of pretexts. They alleged lack of drinking water but gave out no specifics. If you watered stock the way animal activists demand the bloody things would grow fins & gills.
      
      I’d wager heaps that someone in the businessmen’s assn has called up a favour or otherwise lent on the sob sisters down at the SPCA.
