Nukuleka

It’s time to be calling out the hijab and its variants for what it is- a symbol of female repression. Look no further than Iran after the fall of the Shah and the installation of an Islamic State. No woman with true choice makes the choice to cover her hair from a sense of personal modesty. And be suspicious of any Islamic woman who claims that it is her own personal choice. It ain’t.

    For nuns it is a personal choice.
    
    Nuns choose to enter the convent. They are never forced into it (well since 1600 or so). If a nun chooses to leave she can any time. My wife’s aunt was a nun and chose to leave – no problems.
    
    Pretty much the same with Jews.
    
    Islam, not so easy. No choice. Apostasy carries the death sentence.

And you will find most social pressure to wear one in Muslim societies comes from…other women. Is always the third question my Muslim mother-in-law asks my former Muslim wife, after, “how are you?”, and “are you reading holy Koran?” 😉
  
  But ban the burqa, at least in public, for security reasons? Absolutely. A number of Muslim nations do anyway. In NZ it is standard practice that motor cyclists are required to remove their helmet once off their bikes, especially when entering petrol stations to pay for petrol. Same should apply around any shop with the burqa, and, as a general law in public.

      Still is in some (open) Brethren congregations as well, especially among the older women. And has become a socially and fashionably accepted norm in Pacific Island congregations. Try and suggest to some Tongan and/or Samoan women they should take off their hats in church as they are “oppressed” and you risk getting the bash – which Nukuleka well knows! 😉

        It’s been suggested by some biblical scholars that the reference to women wearing a head covering during worship and/or prayer was a note made by a scribe in the margin, that was later mistakenly picked up by another copyists as part of the original (it did happen, e.g., John 5: 4 in the texts that were the basis for the King James Version)
        
        …but there is no textual evidence to support the theory.

        Yes, of the three options I favour the third, especially as there were a thousand sacred prostitutes plying their trade out of the temple of Aphrodite at the time in Corinth. Nonetheless, good biblical studies, like good biology is never “settled”, and one must always canvas the range of options, and keep an open mind to the possibility of new evidence…such as an ancient Greek text of I Corinthians with the reference to women covering their head omitted. But as I implied, in the absence of such objective proof, it is unlikely and largely speculative (lots of necessary adverbs in my qualifications! 😉 )- although I Corinthians 11 is a messy text to make sense out of the thought-progression, which indicates the possibility of textual interpolations.

  Why pick on Iran? Compared to some of our “allies” in the region, attitudes to things like dress codes, access to education, opportunities to work, driving a car are relatively liberal for women.

    I ‘pick on’ Iran because of an experience with Iranian friends. The husband ‘allows’ his wife not to wear a headscarf in the privacy of their home, but the moment I produce my camera to take photos that may appear on social networks and therefore might be seen in Iran or by other Muslims in this country the headscarf is donned. She has no personal choice in the matter. There will be consequences back in Iran- and maybe even here in NZ- if a Muslim woman living in NZ is seen not to be doing what the Islamic police deem to be correct according to the Koran. That is, covering her hair.
    
    As for the drivel about Catholic nuns. I know personally dozens of nuns who do not wear any sort of head covering or even any sort of identifying habit. Only the most prejudiced and ignorant anti-Catholic would distort the truth and claim that nuns all wear veils and habits. It’s fake.

      Ah, and there’s the Nukuleka we know and for whom some of us have contempt. Spraying universal blanket assertions about a rival religion based on limited personal anecdotes, but bleating and squealing like a stuck pig about alleged anti-Catholic bias.
      
      For the record, Nukuleka, I was aware of (recent) changes in Catholic orders, hence I chose my adverb (!) carefully when I wrote “nuns have traditionally worn a variation (of the hajib) and for not all-together dissimilar reasons as Muslim women”.
      
      Unless you want to be consistent and acknowledge that until those recent changes, and when a habit was compulsory for a nun, it was (to quote your post at 8:07am) “a symbol of female repression”?

Had a really good discussion with some friends at the Pub last night about the (alleged) ‘Rape Culture’ and Teenage boys attitudes towards girls etc.
A female friend made a very valid point- Why is American ‘Hip Hop’ Music and Culture the ‘Elephant in the Room’ here? Our kids have it rammed down their throats these days and it openly considers Women as nothing more than ‘Bitches and Hoes’..
Yet you never hear any negativity or criticism of ‘Hip Hop’ from shrieking Protester types- Could this be because they are only looking for White Men to blame??

  Yeh, I had a discussion with a female at work once about this “campus rape culture”. I brought up the fact that the whole thing was kicked off by the fake article in Rolling Stone about the rape on campus. Then figures started coming out like 1-in-5 women are raped on campus (not true).
  
  But yeh – you bring up a good point the rap music. You should read some of Beyonce’s lyrics (whom Barrack Obama invited to the White House, and who he calls a good role model for his girls).

James Shaw interviewed on Morning Report – the Greens have a number of new taxes they are considering, some of which they would implement if they form the next Govt with Labour.

Two thoughts came to mind.

1. Shaw won’t confirm which taxes they would implement until closer to the election. I say “not good enough”, the public deserve to be informed of these taxes to better understand the impact they will have (especially in terms of taking money away from people). After all we are talking about something important that will impact on all NZers (not some wishy washy policy on say snails), and potentially increase “poverty” for the working classes.

2.How does this suit the narrative from Andrew Little about no tax increases from Labour, the question then becomes what new taxes will Labour implement both from their own thinking plus that of their new support party friends, the happy-go-tax-lucky Greens?

Greens can promise all sorts of things to appease their support base knowing too that these would be dependent on the attitude of their potential coalition partners. When something is cultural then it means that pretty much everyone does it or is involved in it and/or it is accepted in society.

As a society:
1) Very few of us rape.
2) Very few of us are pro rape.
3) Very few of us condone rape.

So how does that fit together as being a rape culture?

Sure there are a very small number of rapists and people who condone rape, but that does not make for a culture.

People who over-escalate these events are just being the boy that cried wold – nobody can really take them seriously.

  By they way, I don’t recall any anger at Tom Scott (the alleged musician) and his stated desires for the then PM’s daughter. I suppose it really is different when the left do it.

    This is fundamentally an attack on society at large – not just on men. Everyone loses – not just the men.

And the RINOs are what used to be called moderate republicans – you know, republicans who could govern with a bit of integrity instead of a slash and burn mentality. The very narrow political spectrum in the US has been moving to the right ever since Johnson’s Civil Rights legislation in the ’60s that lost the democrats the south. Under Clinton they abandoned what was left of their traditional base, the working class, and went for the Wall Street dollars normally funneled to republican candidates.
      
      I’ll say this again, there is only one party in the US: the corporate party. The democratic and republican party are mere subsidiaries. This corporate party owns both democrats and the republicans in sufficient numbers to ‘guide’ the congress on its merry dysfunctional way. When they talk about how the ‘American people’ want this or want that, that is who they’re talking about, not the citizenry.

Is Andrew Little the full quid or not this Union Bully thinks the public will vote for him if he plays ruff and Bill English and National will put the gun powder in the shell for him to embarrass himself and lose the plot. I will push Bill English off his horse and Labour will win all the Maori seats Little says and going by the number of people commenting on Stuff he has not factored in that Maori don’t like being taken for granted and his attitude towards them. Me thinks the Labour Leader has misread the people view and especially Maori and it could come back to haunt him.

  Andy likes where he’s at. As leader of the opposition he gets about $250k + perks and has no responsibilities. He doesn’t even have an electorate so there’s no need to clean it on Mondays after it got egged on the week ends.
  
  Why would he want to stuff that up by becoming PM?
  
  His far bigger worry is being deposed from the Labour leader position by Jacinda. Hence he promotes her to keep her nice and close so she feels less inclined to shank him.
  
  He knows this cannot last, but he wants it to last for as long as possible. After all, it is worth about $10k a month to his back pocket.

        ACC Minister Judith Collins’ defamation action against Labour MPs Trevor Mallard and Andrew Little has been settled following a hearing in the High Court at Auckland today.
        
        Ms Collins initiated the defamation case against the pair after comments they made on Radio New Zealand linking her to the leak of an email from former National Party President Michelle Boag.
        
        The email identified Bronwyn Pullar as the woman at the centre of a massive privacy breach at ACC.
        
        In a statement today following their meeting, the three parliamentarians said they agreed “the leak of the email Ms Boag sent to the minister and forwarded on her instructions as the responsible minister to the chairman and chief executive of ACC raised an issue of serious public concern, and that Messrs Mallard and Little were entitled to question who was responsible for that leak”.
        
        “The parties continue to differ over whether the comments made by Messrs Mallard and Little respectively on Radio NZ implied the minister falsely assured the House that neither she nor her office was responsible for the leak.
        
        “Messrs Mallard and Little have confirmed to Ms Collins that was not their intention and wish to make that clear publicly that in the event such meaning was taken they regret it.”
        
        In the statement, the three politicians said they would make no further comment.

        I don’t see any mention of Collins having apologised for anything ztev, but then again you and the truth have a distant relationship.
        
        As far as Hagaman vs Little goes, I am sure they took excellent legal advice before suing Little. Trying to perpetuate further defamation simply heightens the suspicion that you are from Labour’s inner circle, and that you are anonymously doing Little’s bidding for him. I believe the correct term for that, as establish by Hager in 2014, is “Dirty Politics”.

Surely the Labour leader will be able to fund it out of the surplus that National have amassed and he can use most of the surplus to fund all his other promise’s without increasing taxes so whats another billion to Labour.

  He’s promised that there will “probably” be no new taxes or tax increases under Labour. But he’s also promised that if he gets the chance after the election, his first call will be to the Greens, and his second call will be to Winston.
  
  You see, he’ll use the Greens and NZF demands as his justification for all the new taxes and tax increases that will inevitably follow, and he’ll expect us to believe that Labour had absolutely nothing to do with it. That sounds like an isea for a Tui billboard.

  Heartening isn’t it? But doesn’t solve the problem of nighttime or winter power consumption. The cost of cycling electricity through batteries for overnight use (paying for the batteries that have limited life) is in the $0.20-0.30/kWh range, which makes it massively uncompetitive with fossil fuels or nuclear, for the moment. But that will slowly improve, and is not unaffordable. Winter and high latitude countries are a bigger problem.

      We can hope (for cost effective storage), but there is nothing cost competitive with other forms of primary generation in the pipeline. And maintaining grid connections/infrastructure is already more than half the cost of electricity (for any grid supplied energy storage or generation solutions). That is where home PV installations get their real cost advantage.
      
      Nuclear remains the cheapest option in the long term (once we develop safe cheap modular reactors), with enough accessible fissiles to power human civilisation for billions of years.

    You’ll be waiting a while Paulus. Excise tax alone is 68.45 cents per litre including GST, and there are 4.55 litres in a gallon, so even if petrol comes free and there is no freight cost or margins for the wholesaler and retailer, it will still be $3.11 per gallon.

        You keep on suggesting that NZ house prices should be like Houston, in terms of the multiple of incomes of between 2 and 3. They have never been , and never will be. Certainly not in Auckland where I have lived for 45 years, and I have a good memory of house prices over that time.
        
        While I agree the current price levels in Auckland are too high (multiple of 9), they are not going to drop to 3 or less. Realistically they will settle to 6 or 7. Which on current interest rates is affordable.

        I don’t think Carter is thick, or at least I don’t think so. Instead he has skills that are finely honed to a temporary specialist job…that are not related to keeping and expanding money, like, say a business person. Is the same reason why a lot of lottery winners end up bankrupt a few years down the track – they didn’t have the usual life skills and experience accumulated by success – and failure – with smaller amounts acquiring and keeping the fortune in the first place. And, sadly, there are a number of sports people, some with good social skills in other areas, who have lost their money after retirement when they branched out into various business ventures. As I understand Carter has done with some of his money so far.
        
        Also, as per mikenmild, I don’t think Carter is a role-model, no matter what the marketers or lawyers who draw up their contracts and assess their ~~punishments~~ media damage-control if they end up on the front page of the papers for the wrong reason. Instead, as you imply with “you don’t amass a fortune by being a nobody”, he is a high-profile (sports) celebrity.

      I later heard that after his failed clothing venture he and a number of ABs were thought to have been given financial advice from an adviser. Again not confirmed but Graham Henry might have been behind this.
      
      If true a wise move as it’s obviously worked for some.

        And when you think about it, there is nothing in Graham Henry’s CV – PE teacher, head master, rugby coach – that would indicate he would be a good source of professional business expertise and advice compared to anyone else his age, or with similar life experience or business contacts from whom he’s learned stuff by picking up occasional snippets. Plus, when you think about it, any specific (as opposed to general) “financial advice” such as “invest in this” is…suspect, for two reasons
        
        1. Unless the person giving the advise has skin in the game, they haven’t really assessed and lived the risk, and
        
        2. if they have skin in the game, then why would they be telling others when supply and demand dictates the fewer investors, the greater the return? Unless it was not objective advice at all, but rather a pitch for an additional investor to plug a shortfall. Is the same reason the likes of Hanover Finance used “trusted” public personalities like TV newsreaders and All Blacks to pitch for investors…

The media moguls must have been pressuring the commission with last-minute submissions and threats of journo job losses.

If the Commerce Commission lets these two merge into one big conglomerate with a chokehold on the NZ print media and with strong presence in radio and TV, then the Commerce Commission isn’t worth a nob of goat dung.

I watched Q&A and The Nation from the weekend last night. Mostly I wanted to see how Little would explain why he now thought we could continue providing Super from 65 after he rubbished the idea for years.
His main claim seemed to be that it wouldn’t cost as much, as a percentage of GDP, as the Treasury estimates as Treasury were always conservative in their estimates and that GDP would be much higher in 2040 than they said.
Does the silly Little man not realise that if GDP is much higher so will the average income be, roughly, greater in the same proportion? Thus, if he plans to continue paying Super at the same proportion of average income it will have to be much higher than the estimates in 2040 assume? Still about the same percentage of GDP in fact. Is he really so stupid he doesn’t realise that or does he have a cunning Little plan to cut the rate of Super compared to the average income?

Before I make this comment I believe all children should have to be Vaccinated but it does not get over the fact that the parents have rights and it is their choice maybe a selfish one at that. But if true that Andrew Little has said that Labour will look to prohibit children from early Education Teaching if they become the Government I think we are heading into the same territory as seabed and foreshore legislation and the Nanny State policy concerning shower heads and light bulbs from the last Clark Labour led Government. You can advise Parents that its not what you would do but you shouldn’t penalize children for their parents beliefs.

Not that it would be impossible for any agent to have served on each detail, but it seems a bit unlikely. Also, remember that Trump’s allegation was the Obama was spying on him during the campaign. So that would limit your theory to the time after Trump secured the Republican nomination. Oh, and there is no evidence that such a thing happened, but we must not let that stop your speculations.

So bikes are the latest thing for vulnerable schools to get down on adding it to the ever growing list of charity bludges.
Ultimately whether the bikes were pinched or not is probably immaterial as either way they were destined to be either wrecked by the kids or be taken by their parents and swapped for weed at the local pub.

        My question, based on the image I’ve seen, is how would you select an axe handle from that collection? Some of them are curved, some are straight, some are short, and some are long.

The border-crashing boat people are getting closer to New Zealand.

Seventy Vietnamese “blue boats” have been fishing illegally in New Caledonia, only 1980 km from Auckland (Stewart Island is 1265 miles from Auckland).

These are typical of Asian boats that have been used to smuggle illegal migrants into Australia.

The question is: to stop an invasion, will NZ have the balls to imprison illegal border crashers or sink their ships? Not if we get a coalition government with Greens having any say in it.

It’s no time to waste defence resources with the like of Afghanistan deployments and supplying UN peacekeeper-monitors. We need to prepare our Navy and Air Force to fight off gatecrashers.

  Our strike force when we had it used to spend half their flight hours on maritime strike training missions. Because – duh – we’re a maritime nation.
  
  These simple basic elementary geostrategic facts penetrate not to the media nor the sheeple nor almost all politicians, therefore the fools do what they’ve done.
  
  Which is reduce us to high vulnerability of the very thing you’re pointing out is possible.

    Yes. Complete head up their backside stuff. They were going at a ridiculous price and would have given us the ability to do the airdefence role that our troops desperately needed in Afghanistan, (rather than beg our allies to cover our arses). Further we could have trained more effectively with forward air controllers, having a WW2 Spitfire do a couple of passes doesn’t quite cut the mustard in today’s combat theaters.

      The Aussies would have appreciated the F16s to help provide air defence for their Air to air refuelling Tankers and AWACS which would free up the Hornets for long range strike.
      They were a bargain. You weren’t alone Reid. My argument at the time was they helped us play our part in a regional defensive role.

        Agree that Russia is on the way. Figures and reports I’ve seen indicate it’s not the economic basket case the MSM have us believe.
        A lot of internal trade going on as they enjoy a growing economy. Reasonably self sufficient, lots of high tech (3rd largest exporter of software in the world) have many international manufacturers based there supplying burgeoning local markets.
        In some ways comparable to the US in the 50’s where a growing middle class fed growth.
        Putins done a good job. The oligarchs almost stole it all.
        Of course the US’s middle class has been decimated today.

Kurtulmus also says the Dutch ambassador to Turkey, who was traveling when the diplomatic row started, won’t be allowed to return, and said that Turkey’s government plans to advise parliament to withdraw from a Dutch-Turkish friendship group.

However the most troubling development, and one which has the potential to sway the outcome of the Dutch election which will be held in less than two days, is that in the final power play aimed towards Merkel, Kurtulmus exclaimed that since “Europe has not kept its promises on the migrant deal, for us that agreement has ended.”
