‘Martin McGuinness, a former Irish Republican Army commander and Sinn Fein political leader who helped negotiate peace in Northern Ireland after decades of sectarian violence, and became a senior official in its power-sharing government, died on Tuesday in Derry. He was 66.’

66 years too late.

Remember the innocent people whose murders this man was responsible for.

    We are hoping for good views from around the Poverty Bay/Hawke’s Bay Coasts
    
    (But I think we might be waiting… Test rockets were meant to have been launched last year and commercial flights should have started by now)

    It was on an extension cord fed from outside the bathroom. Power outlets in bathrooms were once totally banned for safety reasons, then shaver outlets with an isolating transformer were permitted. With the advent of RCD’s, protected outlets are now permitted. RCD protection would have saved the day for that victim. Even so using a mains connected thing while in the bath is pretty dumb.
    Any charger sold through established retail shops in NZ or Australia are OK – anyone selling or distributing unapproved electrical equipment in NZ will face the ire of MBIE. Buying such items overseas or from NZ fringe retailers, flea markets etc is risky.

With the huge rise in violent thugs holding up dairies and petrol stations, Indian dairy owners are calling for the right to keep a gun to defend themselves under the counter.

At least two dairy owners have been killed. It is understandable dairy owners are scared of these, often huge, aggressive attackers and it is understandable dairy owners need to defend themselves. Some are brave enough to fight back with a bat or broom handle, but guns under the counter are not going to be encouraged by a change in the law.

How about an automatic (or even a can close at hand) fluorescent paint sprayer that covers the attackers in bright paint or dye that can’t be cleaned off by the thugs. Easy to identify the robbers…

  The police know who these robbers are anyway. They’ll have been before the courts many times.
  The state is failing in its basic duty to protect law abiding citizens. I blame the politicians who have gone soft on crime , the courts who hug crims and so called progressives in general.

    Yes you do have a right to protect yourself and your family – particularly in your house.
    
    And yes, you can use a firearm to defend yourself (and your wives, and their boyfriends’ children).
    
    Note however self defence is not a valid reason for owning a firearm in NZ. A shotgun owned for rabbit hunting doesn’t know the difference.

      Just make sure with the firearm that you indeed did have it stored securely with the bolt and ammo locked separate prior to the incident.

  They should keep a shotgun under the counter. The risk of getting caught is low if they don’t use it. And if there is a need to use it, the penalty for having it there will be worth paying.
  
  The paint spray idea is nice if you want to help the police get a conviction, but not much use if you want to avoid being beaten to death by a P-crazed maniac.

    Press a button when affronted.
    Does not need to be paint but some die substitute so the shop merchandise is not damaged but the perps get wet for identification.

  I know kids like these and most do not know who their dad was.
  Mum takes up with the local gang to ease the loneliness and together the “adults” teach the kids crime.

  2. pepper spray into the eyes (but could be wearing googles/sunglasses).
  3. tazer – while on ground remove face covering – photo with cellphone, then dye face of perp. Pepper spray, if necessary, when they get back up.

British government bans laptops from cabins on flights to UK from six countries

Britain is poised to follow the US and ban laptops and other electronic devices from UK-bound flights on planes from Middle Eastern countries, security sources have told The Telegraph.

The Department of Homeland Security in the US announced a ban yesterday after revealing that extremists are seeking “innovative methods” to bring down jets amid concerns that bombs will be hidden in laptops.

The measure by the US will affect flights by nine airlines from eight countries in the Middle East including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Egypt.

There goes my outbound Europe travel on ME carriers.

While I don’t doubt there’s some truth to this ‘threat,’ the US government and to a lesser extent European governments have long protested an ‘unfair’ commercial playing field from the ME state-owned airlines.

I’m sure a laptop ban will help get travelers back onto US/UK/European carriers

    That’s annoying for two reasons – the times I’ve flown to the UK its been on Emirates through Doha, which would now mean that anyone travelling on Qantas to London is going to be caught up in this.
    
    The second is that many airlines are starting to move away from in-flight entertainment consoles, instead streaming directly to passenger’s devices. I’ll be blowed if I’m going to watch the latest blockbuster movie on my smartphone screen.
    
    Unfortunately the alternative seems to be flying Air NZ via LA which means hours of filling out forms to get an entry visa to sit in the LAX transit lounge.

Moon said Labour is effectively holding a gun to the heads of voters in the Maori electorates. None of the Maori electoral candidates will seek a place on the list, so Labour is saying “Vote for them or else”.

Moon suspects that this will end badly for Labour, and especially for the Labour Maori candidates who don’t have the backstop of a list placing, and I agree. It looks like a cunning stunt to make sure Labour gets a few MP’s in off the list; Little, Jackson, Mallard, Moroney and Parker, but I hope it blows up in their face.

  What happens if the Maori MPs start a separate Political Party – say call it ‘Labour Tangatawhenua’ (LT) or something similar. They would be the only ‘Labour’ candidates in the Maori electorates.
  
  This would be associated with Labour like Jim Anderton’s progressives.
  
  At the election LT wins 4 or 5 Maori electorates and immediately pledges ‘support’ for a Labour government.
  
  In effect Labour would get their full complement of % list MP’s plus an effective overhang of 4 or 5 Maori seat MP’s. Could be enough to tip the balance of power nicely towards Little.
  
  Would be a rort of the system but legal as far as I can tell.
  
  A bit far fetched I suspect as I don’t think Little has the gonads to have a go at something like this.
  
  Could also backfire and they lose all Maori electorates.

    This is bound to happen one day and there is no way we should have Maori seats with MMP. When an election is stolen this way there will be a revolution and NZ will never be the same again. Not a risk worth taking. Also need to consider the appalling turnout in Maori seats. Supposed to be one person one vote but votes in Maori seats count twice.

        I don’t keep KB open all day. Look at the votes cast in Maori electorates. There are roughly half as many as in the General Electorates and always have been. It takes two votes to win a general electorate to one to win a Maori electorate.
        
        We should not have Maori seats under MMP as it opens up the rort outlined above, but if wse do have to have them there should only be 4.

        This is a point that has been made before. The important thing to remember is that electorates are determined by the size of the adult population. Maori electorates are the same size as general electorates.
        If the turnout in Maori electorates is half the turnout in general electorates then yes, a Maori electorate MP might be elected with many fewer votes than an MP in a general electorate. This is a far cry from ‘Maori votes count twice’.
        Another way of looking at it might be to ask waripori if he would be happier if the turnout in Maori electorates were higher.

        Every man should support his children and their mother.
        Everyone who is not severely disabled should work.
        A man’s wage should be enough to support him, his wife and TWO (not 10) children.
        Children are better off with both parents, unless one or both are dangerous criminals.
        Kids should not be having kids…and definitely should not be paid to have them.
        Also…contraception is a wonderful invention and should be either free, or young people at risk of having kids they are not capable of raising should be given incentives to use it.

    I can remember Manurewa in the 1970s as a working class area, but was not solely white. Before the first Mall was built there was rural land between Manurewa and Papatoetoe. In those times there would have been little crime anywhere in NZ, because that was the old kiwi way. Much of South Auckland is now, by any measure, a shit hole.

Let’s play a mind game.

Imagine that a population has two kinds of people. Let’s call one “bread-winners.” These are people who know that they have to work to provide for their families. Work is what defines them.
Let’s call the other group “the kept.” They depend on the money provided by the bread-winners.
Let’s imagine that only bread-winners have the vote. Years later, the kept gain the right to vote.
One of the things the kept will vote for is to have money provided to them (as that is what they are used to).

    I don’t think it is as clear-cut as that.
    
    If you have a large part of the population who tend to:
    -be willing to trade off freedom for safety
    -choose appeasement over conflict
    -be pragmatic instead of principled
    -are driven by emotion rather than logic
    -want to “feel” good rather than “do” good
    
    then giving such people the vote may tend to favor people who desire a “big, strong government who will look after you, protect you and provide the things that you need.”
    
    Maybe such people see such a government as a substitute for something missing in their lives…

  Except for a period during the war when my mother worked in a munitions factory she never drew a salary in her live.
  However.
  Until she married my father and moved to NZ she worked on the family farm. Once here she raised seven children, as well as cooked all the meals, made clothes for the kids, grew a substantial amount of our vegetables, cleaned the house . . . . & chopped wood until the day before she died at ninety five.
  Now you tell me she didn’t warrant a vote.
  My Dad went off to WWII as did a lot of blokes he knew & some of them didn’t come back & some that did come back weren’t the same any more.
  A lot of kids I knew had mothers who worked hard like Mum with big families, but a few had the additional burden of husbands who had demons from the war that they tried to chase away with alcohol. I remember Dad going round at night accasionally to calm his mates down . . . .
  We’re all in the country together. The government doesn’t make decisions with an eye solely to those who pay income tax. I know there are some who take advantage of the system, but that’s a small price to pay, in my opinion.

Just had a bite to eat at KFC.
(I only ate a few chips of course.)
As I was leaving, I had to squeeze past an enormously massive person of indeterminate gender but fairly young appearance, in a wheelchair.
This is becoming a more common sight these days in the south.
(Plus the epidemic of diabetes.)
Can’t our doctors/health authorities get a bit more proactive? ??

    What I was hoping for was just some commonsense talking to by someone at the coalface.
    Some years ago my Downs son’s teacher sat me down and told me gently…if I didn’t reduce his food intake, he would end up an invalid.
    We did.
    Yet for some years I was sent to have x-rays for my knees (collapsing under my weight), my lower arm (stress from hauling myself out of armchair).
    Yet nobody EVER mentioned I was overweight.
    Perhaps they assumed I should know…but the power of denial is strong.
    I’m working on it now, but if I was Polynesian, I would have diabetes.

    More of them are installing extra-wide automatic doors presumably to cater for their obese customers.
    I was in England and Europe recently and I noticed at McDonald’s, all the meal options had their calorie quota listed in bold print next to the price.

Radio NZ, the Voice of the Left, is pulling out the stops today to rescue the flop launch of Hager the Horrible’s latest book.

Radio Labour’s political editor, Jane Patterson, said of the events at the centre of book, that if the actions were committed there “is a question of responsibility for the Government.”

In a written piece on the Radio NZ web site, Patterson says: “The onus is now on the government to clearly demonstrate New Zealand was not responsible for the raid on two Afghan villages in 2010 that led to 21 people being killed or injured.”

It brings to mind Humbert Wolfe’s epigram:

    But then DPF has standards to adhere too and there was the reference to others (a censorious right) burning bookshops – the hate speech/crime area being touched on.
    
    The other party took no offense, asking if sb had a match to provide.
    
    Given sb was not supporting any such right wing action but mocking the intolerance at the freedom of speech that bookshops represent, a harsh call.

  But taking out a one party socialist state just led to a vacuum that Islamist identity activists would seek to fill, not an Arab spring. It led to more than the suppression of minorities, but a regional war between Sunni and Shia.

    I think it has got a lot more complicated than just a Sunni – Shia conflict.
    
    It’s not as if the Arab Spring failure was unexpected. The West hasn’t been well informed about the politics/power struggles in Arab countries for a century…..
    
    Europe has completely underestimated Erdogan.
    If Turkey turns to Custard, things will become very messy.

      If … . The question now is what form of custard.
      
      Turkey in NATO and the EU is now off the table, no one now sees that as credible and soon it will be officially abandoned.
      
      The question is whether free trade with EU will continue or not. And if not, that would also mean the end of Turkey within NATO.
      
      If Turkey threatens to facilitate breach of EU borders the EU will end free trade and there will go Turkey within NATO. And no doubt Kurds would then soon seek NATO support for independence. Little wonder Erdogan’s paranoia about Syrian Kurds getting the sort of self government within Syria that they currently have within Iraq.

      It has nothing to do with it. That is just one of the many conflicts the US is fueling to weaken the Arab world and keep it divided. To please Israel.
      
      The real target is Iran.

  The lycra mob seem to have a sway over many local bodies. Similarly in Christchurch. Bloody cycle ways every where while traffic is squeezed into tubes.
  
  Try driving up Papanui road in the late afternoon. For a city of Christchurch’s size, the congestion caused is outrageous.

      If you had the approved view on Israel/Jews you would find it almost impossible to get even a warning.
      
      You could even call for people to be rounded up, exterminated, have their countries nuked to “glass” and so on, with not a warning given.
