    They sail until they out of the African territorial waters (three miles or whatever) into the “high sea” where the NGO ships can pick them up, then scuttle their boats.
    
    If the NGOs picked them up inside territorial waters they would be legally required to take them back to Africa.
    
    However because they do this in the “high seas” the ship has European sovereignty so they are treated as if they turned up in Europe.

      To be fair, Nixon and Kissenger ran the “mad man” variation of “good cop/bad cop” effectively during the early 1970s.
      
      Each weekend Kissenger would fly to Paris unobserved for secret peace talks with the North Vietnamese.
      
      Each weekend the North Vietnamese would filibuster and stall and fake seizures and argue and dispute about shit like the shape of the table to avoid commencing serious negotiations.
      
      Each time Kissenger would tell them, “you don’t understand. I’ve got this crazy bastard back in the White House. It’s taking all of my persuasive powers to stop him wiping Hanoi off the map. You’ve got to give me some concessions so I can swing him to be more amenable to your demands…”
      
      Each weekend the North Vietnamese would give the diplomatic version of “fluck you and fluck Plesident Nixon!”
      
      Each Monday, back in the Oval Office Kisssenger would give his report and Nixon and Kissenger both decide together where they were going to bomb that week to give the impression the President was indeed a “mad man”.
      
      And then next weekend, Kissenger would turn up again in Paris, with the message, “you don’t understand. I’ve got this crazy bastard back in the White House….”
      
      But Nixon did have a long term strategy, that saw him obtain “peace with honour” in Vietnam, triangulate successfully between the Soviets and Chinese, make the opening to China via Pakistan, and also negotiate detente and the SALT agreement with the Soviets. Whatever his poker-playing abilities, I don’t get the impression Trump has given his objectives too much thought and he is making it up as he goes along.         Are you sure you aren’t confusing the stalling by ‘table shape’ with the negotiations concerning the cease-fire during the Korean war? The North Vietnamese wanted peace, it was the US that usually sabotaged the negotiations. After all, war is good for business in the US. Since WWII it has primed its economy using their own pathological version of military Keynesianism. Military funding has become a drug and the government is addicted and can’t break the habit.
        Since 1789 the US military has been fighting somebody in all but about 30-odd years. Quite a bellicose history for a ‘peace-loving’ nation.
        Never heard the ‘man man’ scenario but did hear MAD – as in mutually assured destruction – the Nixon strategy apropos the Soviets. I’m not sure Kissinger was threatening the Vietnamese with it, or the ‘mad man’ scenario but it wouldn’t surprise me. I won’t argue the point since one can’t believe anything Kissinger says anyway.
        In 1968 Nixon ran on the platform that he had a plan to end the Vietnam war but it went on for years after the election, killing hundreds of thousands of Asians and another 21000 Americans until the US pulled out its troops in 1973. Korea the next day. No. The US Navy has enough fire power in the ships around Japan (Destroyer Squadron 15: USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54), USS John S. McCain (DDG-56), USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62), USS Stethem (DDG-63), USS Benfold (DDG 65), USS McCampbell (DDG-85) and USS Mustin (DDG-89). to blow the blow hard to bits anyway. They may have been going for the ‘white slavery” angle/instinctive click bait response that resulted in the infamous Mann Act in the US about 100 years ago – “taking a woman over state lines for immoral purposes”. Was the reason (the first black) World heavy weight boxing champion, and inspiration for the phrase “the Great White Hope” Jack Johnson went into self-imposed exile from the US for much of his reign. If dime had lived there and then he would have been in a bit of trouble! 😉

      My mother, who lived in NZ from 1946 onwards, always thought of herself as English, whereas a German bloke I worked with who hadn’t been here an awfully long time, considered himself a Kiwi.
      I’ve seen little Indian kids at the cricket cheering for India with Kiwi accents.

      I also remember a line I heard from a documentary about an equally-hated segregation-era black American, the singer and actor Paul Robeson, who also had a taste for ‘white women” (including Lord Mountbatten’s wife) .   What a cry baby. I see this frequently. These people over 45 move to the country to get back to nature or whatever the LSD flashbacks tekll them then find that they need to travel greater distances and spend more time on maintenance on things like water reticulation, fences, weeds etc than they ever did in a city location.
  Usually after about 2 years one of them starts to want to move back to the city and after 3-4 years they do. This occurs around Franklin district and eg Helensville.
  
  Looks like Mr Sook is a bit dull or house prices have moved up too much to move back to the city so now they whinge and highlight how their lack of reasonable foresight got them into trouble.
  
  Instead of being around wine country they go round the countryside whining.
  
  Simple solution to this. Pour some diesel over the road from 50 metres either side of the house. And… better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

    Still, Labour and the Groans want to increase the inflow of (Muslim) refugees.

  It’s a bit of a dilemma for the Murdochs. Most of the stuff O’Reilly was accused of was from years ago. I saw one yesterday where a women who worked with him TEN years ago said he once looked at her funny! Now that’s a desperate smear.
  I note that recently O’Reilly has been getting into CNN and others for fake news and giving some pretty damning examples so I don’t think it’s a coincidence this campaign against him has started. It’s also been suggested those protesters are being paid- which seems to be happening a lot now.
  Anyway, his viewers don’t seem to care as his ratings are the highest they have ever been and he’s still no 1. We’ve seen from other BDS campaigns other advertisers step forward or come back.
  He’s 67, I don’t think he will carry on much longer anyway. Mind you, given this smearing by the morons on twitter he might make a point of staying just to piss them off!

Tighter immigration, wage gender equality, retirement age and still the possibility of tax cuts for lower and middle income earners. A shift to the left for sure and it won’t please some traditional right wingers but it’s a calculated move to hold the bulk of Andy’s ‘missing million’ in the National tent. Philosophically it’s a tad too left for my liking but I’m pragmatic enough to figure that any of the alternatives on offer are a far worse option.

  I’d like to think that Russia is slowly progressing towards a western civilisation- hopefully a more Democratic country will happen over time.But I don’t think it would quite work at the moment.

The High Court has rejected Labor’s push to challenge the eligibility of South Australian Family First senator Lucy Gichuhi based on concerns about her citizenship. The High Court today declared that Senator Gichuhi, who was born in Kenya, is free to replace Bob Day as a South Australian senator in the Federal Parliament.

The Kenyan-born lawyer migrated to Australia in 1999 and said she became an Australian citizen in 2001 and never held dual citizenship. Australia’s constitution precludes anyone with dual citizenship from being in the parliament. Kenya’s High Commissioner to Australia said Senator Gichuhi automatically lost her Kenyan citizenship when she became an Australian citizen. But legal experts argued a challenge could still be launched against her because of a change to citizenship laws in her country of birth.

It’s an interesting story.

      The public sector has always been about serving the public – doing the job. I’ve yet to meet a public servant who didn’t feel in some way they were making a useful contribution. Not that all of them were, but, like politicians, the motivation is generally honourable.

these are their CV Tips:
Keep it brief and simple
Tailor your CV to the role you’re applying for
Include achievements in previous roles
Don’t put in your photo or birthdate
Don’t include school or family history
Check your spelling and grammar

Any employer with any nouse will look at your previous rolls and guess you have BEEN AROUND for a bit.
Better to lay it all out in from of them. Tell them you are well, keen to work, have lots of experiance which you can pass on to others.
In most cases you will be applying for a job of lesser seniority or skill sets than the one you were in when you retired and in a lots of cases knowing that you are not a lazy wipper snapper is a plus.

  I’ve used both Windows and Mac and I can use either, but the ‘Explorer’ part of a Mac (which they call ‘Finder’) I was never quite that comfortable with. I can jump around folders in Windows without thinking about it, but with Finder I do have to think about it a little. I suppose it’s just something you get used to. Another thing you’ll notice on a Mac is that instead of every program (or Window) having its own menu bar at the top with ‘File’, ‘Edit’ and so forth, there is just one main menu bar at the top of a Mac which changes depending on what program you have open. Therefore, if you have multiple windows open onscreen you have to be certain of which one is in focus because those will be the commands available in the menu at the top (if you understand what I mean).
  
  Adobe stuff like Photoshop works the same on both, albeit there is an ‘Option’ key instead of a CTRL key. One thing that slightly annoys me when using Photoshop on a Mac is that even when the various pallets are open, you can still see through to the desktop wallpaper in the places where there are no pallets or the photo you are working on. I personally prefer a grey background that totally separates me from anything else.
  
  I guess you should also figure out what software you want to use and that is crucial to you. You don’t want to have to buy things again (and you most probably will have to buy Word, Excell, etc), and/or take note of software that isn’t available on a mac at all that you use in Windows.

  Nasska, you’ll soon get used to Windows 10. A clod like me found the transition fairly straight forward.
  
  Heaps of reasonably priced laptops are around at the moment, and the all-in-one desktops are fine for those who enjoy a big screen and are satisfied mostly by internet access, email, Skype, and YouTube.
  
  If you really want to play and have an upgradeable machine, I reckon a traditional desktop’s still unbeatable. By desktop I mean the machine has a separate plinth from the screen and the keyboard.
  
  In all, Intel processors still have a good edge over AMD.
  
  Apples are dearer, and if you are used to the file structure of Windows 7 you’ll be happier with Windows 10 than a Mac – in my view.
  
  Some of the folks here use Linux – probably the Mint or Ubuntu versions. Future software costs are minimal, but this path’s more technical.

      I’m either using fedora (gnome) or Windows 10. I don’t find much trouble adapting when jumping from one to the other. Most people would hate gnome as delivered vanilla but with a few add ons and tweaks it works well. Incidentally, Ubuntu have announced they are dumping their “unity” desktop and they are going to ship gnome as default but probably pre-tweaked to Ubuntu theme style.

It does help if some-one else close to you already is running a Mac.

I’ve never had bugs or silly crashes that always used to plague my Windows laptops.
I use a MacBook Pro and find its great for use at home, but it’s a wee bit heavy for travelling.
One of the daughters has a thin 12 ” MacBook and that’s handy when travelling.

    At that time my Laptop was running XP and the PC had Vista.
    
    The husband loathes Microsoft stuff but runs Windows 7 on his computer as he can’t do his spy-work on Macs. However, I can’t understand a thing he raves about and he is such a pain when I have a computer problem.

      Good on you, Maggy. Accumulating computer information is about as counter-productive and useful as blogging addiction.
      
      My biggest problems have been with laptops. I think they often have junk parts in them, compared with bigger machines, and there isn’t enough room for air to move around the components. Hot parts wear out more quickly.
      
      I say junk parts. That’s in some of the cheaper PC-type laptops. In these, the screen comprises so much of the production cost that the makers are tempted to economise on other parts.

  Another vote for the MacBook here.
  
  I’ve never warmed to Mac OS, but it’s not difficult to find your way around it. Also, Macs run other OS’s quite well. If you find you don’t like Mac OS you can throw a Linux distro and/or a Windows partition onto it. (I’m running a MacBook Pro with Linux Mint as my primary operating system but with Win 10 for a couple of Windows-only applications I need for work and Mac OS – because it’s there.)

    I thought the basic marketing ploy of Apple Macs was they were simple and intuitive to use.
    
    Not if you are running the equivalent of three operating systems on it, I’m afraid.
    
    Macs used to have the edge for those in video, photography, and art, but I think Windows is making inroads there. (See link following – sorry, but it demands an email address before letting you read it.)

      Mac used to be the go-to computer for Photoshop, but now it doesn’t matter so much. When I was studying, we all used Mac for Photoshop but those studying 3D animated computer graphics rendered all their stuff on Windows systems – it is better for that stuff.

      That is indeed how Apple seems to promote Mac OS and Apple hardware: intuitive.
      
      On the other hand, for the months I was stuck in Mac OS (until I got a Linux distro to run properly on my mid 2011 MacBook Air) I found its file browser frustrating; its pdf reader insisted on leaving a copy of the document on my desktop every time I opened one; and I was never sure where files were being stored.
      
      Then again, I don’t like cars that haven’t got three pedals.

Since 1789 the US military has been fighting somebody in all but about 30-odd years. Quite a bellicose history for a ‘peace-loving’ nation.
Comes with being the world’s policeman.

This is a toss-away response having no basis in reality. The US in the 18th-19th century had neither the will nor the power to be the world’s policeman – given Britain was the big dog inb the Atlantic at the time. Even France would have crushed the US military in a serious war. There were some Rooseveltian rumbles in the 1890’s and a practice round in Cuba, but the global policeman role didn’t kick into gear until after WWII when the US had the will to police everybody for it’s own purposes and the war-making machine to make it work. And the US has been at war with somebody, running up a $20T debt, ever since. But as Herodotus observed “the strong do what they will, the weak what they must”. I can’t stop them.
Comparing bombing Cambodia and Laos to bombing Holland is apples and oranges and anybody who conflates the two has little grasp of history, ethics, or international law.
Finally, believing everything in Nixon’s self-serving memoirs is akin to believing Genesis describes phenomenal reality. It’s believing that somebody who kills, or orders killing if you like, is somehow unwilling to lie about it. But I suppose there are those who do believe both.

  World policeman status came in 1917, even though the Americans were reluctant about it until 1941. Would love to know how you determine the US was at constant war in the 19th Century. Against the British in 1812, the Civil War 1861-65, and then the Spanish in 1898. Who else? Or are you also counting the Native Americans. Meh. All 19th Century colonising powers had the same dubious record.
  
  No, East Cambodia was used as a base by foreign insurgents (North Vietnamese and Viet Cong) from which to wage war against third parties – South Vietnam and her ally the USA. Sounds very much like German-occupied Holland 1944.
  
  And I note you’ve omitted any mention of Nixon the the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT), which contradicts your tedious, boring and cliched portrayal of “Nixon the warmonger”, who refused to bug out of Vietnam until, among other things, American POWs were returned. Like another conservative politician of the same approximate era but who defied unrepresentative by strident calls for radical left wing change, Rob Muldoon, Richard Nixon was a good and capable politician who was more liberal and much more humane than his ideological critics realised or were prepared to acknowledge.     Territory in Cambodia was used by the N. Vietnamese to move war material, but Cambodia was not controlled by the N. Vietnamese like Holland was controlled by the Germans. Cambodia and Laos were neutral nations. The US was not at war with the Cambodians and Laotians but bombed them anyway – beyond bombing the pathways used to transport war material. Remember the devastation of the Plain of Jars during the air war? Probably not. But I remember. And so do the Hmong who live here. A bit different from Holland which was controlled by the Germans who we were at war with, but the subtlety of truth does not seem to be your strong suit if your posts are all I have to go by.
    I will not list the instances of US military action/intervention since 1789 as the list is too long to post here. But you can view the list by looking up “Instances of Use of United States Armed Forces Abroad, 1798-1945”, prepared by the Foreign Affairs Division, Congressional Research Service if you’re interested and do your own calculations. It does not include the Civil War nor the Indian Wars; the clue is in the title. And I did not say the US was at ‘war’ as you suggest, I said ‘fighting somebody’. You escalated it to ‘war’. Another missed, or purposely avoided, subtlety on your part.
    I also never said Nixon was a warmonger, that’s another contribution of yours. I just said he had no plan to end the Vietnam War. Which he didn’t; it was an election promise to attract Americans already tired of war. His inability to end the war as he promised cost the US 21000+ more dead servicemen until the Vietnamization.
    Nor did I mention what you suggested about POWS; that’s another diversionary construction of yours. Glad you note that I didn’t mention SALT. I didn’t mention Watergate, his racism, anti-semitism, love of football, poker skills, or his wife’s alcoholism either since none of them are relevant to the issue. Another diversion of yours. In fact, I voted for Nixon in 1968 and would argue that he was the US’s last liberal president, but that’s another issue.
    As for your straw men and mild insult, well that’s to be expected from those whose feelings determine their truths, not facts. In that vein I will suggest this: that you seem to have the typically superficial Wikipedia/Google understanding of modern US history – which is okay with me – but you should drop the pretense that your comments take into consideration the complication of actual facts. If you wish an other than shallow claim to knowledge about the subject try reading something substantive about it. I can recommend a short reading list of you like.
