Call me a conspiracy nut if you like, but there is something very wrong with our judges and the spate of weak sentences being given out now. Being an election year, these judges might have received the word from higher up the chain to deliberately give ridiculous sentences to get the public pissed off with this National Govt.

National have been making some changes that these judges do not like, but they still have a very long way to go. The only way to get on top of these weak decisions by the judiciary, is to have minimum sentencing for all crimes that involve a stretch inside. If the criminals knew beforehand what they would be up for if caught, then maybe, just maybe, they would think twice before doing the crime.

The three strikes law also needs to be strengthened to take away from judges the discretion on when the third strike comes into effect. It’s a no brainer that if you are sitting on two strikes and you are dumb enough to commit another crime, then you are no use to society and should be locked up indefinitely.

    It was established yonks ago that a young child is 50-100 times as likely to be killed by mum’s boyfriend than his biological dad.
    Instead of waiting for more babies to be bashed to death, we should make it illegal for young mothers to have a live-in boyfriend in the house, if he has any indications of violence/ gang associations etc.

      Vege: No-one is more outraged than me about these dreadful child killings by mum’s latest boyfriend…but how on earth would a law such as you propose work? You would need an army of social workers and police on the task of identifying who Mum’s latest boyfriend is, and whether he has gang associations…and how would you define “indications of violence”? I occasionally get really pissed off and shout a lot…I am told I look and sound quite scary…would I qualify?

        Better an army of social workers IMO than our present rate of child bashings and killings.
        We dish out the dpb, state housing and other freebies to any young girl who doesn’t bother to use contraception, but we don’t even ensure the child it is meant to support is being properly cared for.
        I think once it was generally known that young women could not have an unrelated male as a dad substitute around their very young children, especially if he has gang connections/violent behaviour, then the neighbours would be a bit less hesitant to dob him in.

        Don’t you recall some years back when one of the most revered Maori leaders called in the head of Women’s Refuge (herself Maori) to tell her to stop talking about Maori violence?
        More recently she has been complaining about how pakeha see the high birth-rate for Maori girls aged 13-17 as “a problem”.
        The fact so many babies of these young girls end up bashed, violated and murdered doesn’t seem to concern her as much as maintaining “their fertility”.

  It wouldn’t make sense for judges to “make the public pissed off with National” for perceived weakness on crime, when Labour is even weaker on crime. National is only weak on crime anyway because it has sold out to progressive leftist, PC crap and become Helen Lite. A voter backlash in the direction of putting the real progressive lefties back in office (including the Green fruitloops) wouldn’t make sense.

  Holysheet: Ah…who “higher up the chain” do you think would have issued these instructions to Judges “to get the public pissed off with this National government”?? The leader of the Labour Party? A moment’s thought should tell you that is nonsense.
  
  And re 3S, you don’t have it quite right. The Judges have no discretion on when the third strike kicks in – and no Judge has tried to avoid that consequence. The discretion is whether to allow parole on the maximum sentence, because to not do so would be “manifestly unjust”. THAT is where the law should be tightened…but sadly it won’t be. The government is currently under the influence of the “everyone is capable of rehabilitation” brigade – including the leader of ACT.

    I think you need to draw a distinction between the idea that ‘everyone is capable of rehabilitation’ and the idea that everyone should have the opportunity for rehabilitation.
    You well know that there are current prisoners who will never be paroled, despite being eligible for that consideration.

  I have been on a jury duty recently, half the ceases that were supposed to start, were put off for various reasons.
  Less than 10 months to start of civil case and with jury as well.

        Earl and Lani Hagaman don’t want Little’s cash. He attacked their integrity, and all they will want is a decision from the Court affirming that he defamed them.
        
        Not that such a decision will come cheap. They will want Little’s head on a platter, his balls in a jar and his guts for garters, metaphorically speaking, of course. He will also have to meet a goodly portion of their costs, as well as his own legal fees.
        
        You’d think that, as a lawyer by qualification, he would have approached Mrs and Mrs Hagaman with a full and unconditional apology long before now, rather than release a wishy-washy apology to the media first. If he is that irresponsible with his own money, just think how bad his stewardship of the government coffers would be.

  But seriously folks, fernglas is right…Mr Little will be giving evidence in his defence sometime next week or the week after…unless of course his lawyers can come up with an even more abject apology than has already been offered and rejected…and the costs would now be substantially more than when his last apology was rejected…

  Absolutely a joke. Look at the spin and deceit Hager is using. On the issue of “balance” (balance is where TWO sides of a story or issue is looked at e.g. someone makes an allegation therefore for balance the person being accused is allowed to respond) …
  
  Look what the weasel says as his definition of balance (which is at odds with the accepted media definition):
  
  “The responsibility to be accurate, fair and balanced has to be dealt with in your research.”
  
  In other words Hager will research a subject and in his mind his “balance” is him interviewing his keyboard by “making up” what he thinks the other side thinks or their intentions. In other words, no, he will not ask them. I suppose the scary thing is Hager genuinely believes that, after all that’s what he continuously does, and defends each time he releases a hit-job book.
  
  Anyone else saying this and they would be ridiculed by the media themselves and called out…

        Don’t blame them Ztev, instead blame successive Governments that have both underfunded the armed services but then expect them to fulfil Govt policy with what little resourcing (and logistical support) that they had.
        
        The period leading up to the Iroquois crash was one of intensive operations in the likes of East Timor (the first in 1999/2000 then subsequent deployment in the mid to late 2000’s) and other places. In other words stretching (a relatively small) aircraft fleet and personnel.
        
        What then happens is there aren’t enough personnel and time to train and maintain proficiencies (when back from deployments, as they are busy preparing for the next rotation).
        
        All this was done when Defence were busy an stretched involved in combat conflicts again (therefore fulfilling successive Govt foreign policy) meanwhile Defence was being funded at the post Cold war (benign strategic environment) levels of no conflict. Like I say successive Govts are to blame, both tinker and both expect too much with what little funding they provide. It’s unfair to blame the Air Force.

Being the First of April – All Fool’s Day I would give congratulations to the biggest F..stuff up of the year – so far Andy.
Hagar, and the other one whose name I cannot remember, along with the so called media, and their so called Manning Lawyers, who have been hustling business for Afghans, who were never there – particularly the Harold which could be out of business soon must take the chocolate biscuit for stupidity.
They all cannot check their facts down to locations, bullet sizes and coke bottles.
All the evidence is hearsay as none of them ever went to the fire zone – they paid Afghans men to take pictures with cameras provided.
They will do anything for a dollar remember.

    Jews understandably remember what Vichy-ite France is capable of. In fact there are parallels between Vichy syndrome and nominally decent people caving to modern day political correctness. Jews are among the victims – again. Both within nations that pander to “vibrant multiculturalism” and if they “escape” to Israel – political correctness includes occasion-seeking against Israel at every opportunity.
    
    National has shown how low it can go in its sell-out to P.C. (even if it is a non-issue to most people) by joining the “beat up Israel” bloc at the UN. Its sell-out to “vibrant multiculturalism” has not had quite as major an effect on NZ’s Jews yet, not because National has principles, but because there is no overland route from the Middle East to here.

      Phil, I am pro-Israel having been brought up in post-WW2 London and recalling the distress amongst our Jewish neighbours when receiving confirmation that their extended families in France, Belgium, Holland etc had suffered the ‘final solution’. I recall too in Melbourne in the 70s when shopping in the Vic Markets seeing a numbers tattooed on the forearms of many a stallholder. However, I cannot support the aggressive construction of highrise housing in the disputed order territory. To me it is nothing more than a modern version of Lebensraum.

    Different things.
    Average prices are based on the small fraction that sell in a 3 month period, depends on 2 things numbers that sell and price. More low priced ( but still expensive by normal standards) houses will bring down average in that 3 month period.
    used to be that numbers for sale would drop over winter as cold weather kept buyers inside, but internet mostly changed that with flash photos meaning you can view houses from your couch.

      “In Auckland, median prices rose a seasonally adjusted +11% (6.7% median change) year-on-year, although the median price dropped $5,000 (-1%) during February. The median price rose an average of 10.6% over the past three months, versus 10.5% over the same period a year ago, indicating a very similar performance between the first three months of 2017 and 2016.”

The fine citizens if Whanganui have received their “Test” census papers. They are divided into two columns with the questions in maori on the left and english on the right. Makes the whole paper twice as long and confusing.
14.6% of New Zealanders say they are Maori. Of that 25% of those a proficent in reading maori. But for some reason the paper has to be rwice as long and confusing to suit 3.65% of the population.
All census papers are delivered by hand. They are not specific to a person or property until delivered.
Why cant the occupants be asked “Do you want your paper in English or Maori?” Simple.
Wont be long before you will have no choice other than maori or Arabic.

If an agent buys a house from Mr. A (knowing that he can flip it to Mr. B for a higher price), then why not sell directly from Mr. A to Mr. B and take the greater commission?

  Commission is often fixed or is a % of the value of the sale.
  
  Let’s say he’s on 5% commission.
  
  If he sells it to B on behalf of A for $200k, then he gets is 5% commission on $200k which is $10k.
  
  Now let’s say he can buy the place from A for $100k and sell it to B for $200k.
  
  If he buys it for $100k he gets $5k commission, then sells it to B for $200k and makes $100k. That’s $105k all up.
  
  $105k is greater than $10k, so that’s a lot of incentive.

He also fails to disclose that he is on one of the three corporate boards that this entity has. It’s got this very complex ownership structure. He discloses he is on the company in Massachusetts, that is he on the board of a company in the Netherlands, but he fails to disclose that he is also on the executive board of the holding company. That’s a clear violation of the disclosure rules that I think needs to be looked at.”

Time to give the chop to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal. It comprises a bunch of politically appointees, nearly all of them lawyers. Who are they answerable to, if anyone as they run a shamefully weak deportation appeal process? It’s past time NZ had a tribunal with some guts.

Latest example. The tribunal has allowed to stay in the country a man, who when in New Zealand on a temporary visa, raped a woman.

The rapist, Tajinder Paul Singh, was sentenced to six years imprisonment in Christchurch in September 2014 for rape and for improper use of a passport. (He left the country for India on another person’s passport the day after the rape, but returned).

This from a Stuff report of the tribunal decision (link below):

The Immigration and Protection Tribunal suspended his [the rapist, Tajinder Paul Singh] deportation liability for five years, meaning he would not be deported if he did not commit an imprisonable offence in that time.
The tribunal decision from last September, which has just been released, found exceptional circumstances meant it would be “unjust and unduly harsh” to separate the man from his three-year-old child and his wife, who suffered from depression and anxiety.

I wonder what the raped woman and her family think about that.

Shame on the tribunal.

Politicians have successfully taken New Zealand into its greatest ethnic change since British colonisation, this time without debate or political discussion let alone a treaty or years of warfare. I guess the tribunal’s largesse to criminal foreigners is further proof that politicians think immigration matters are none of our business.

Good job by the Christchurch Press today on chaos at the Westland District Council.

It looks like the council’s awarding of a $7 million sewerage-system contract to a new firm owned by Neha Bubna, a cakeshop owner in Auckland, was, well, just the icing on the contract cake.

The cake- shop lady is a recent arrival from India with no background in civil engineering or works contracting.

Now it seems the council also gave her firm, Techno Economic Services, contracts to upgrade water systems in the small Coast towns of Kumara and Whataroa.

The council’s asset manager, Vivek Goel, is under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office over allegations of financial impropriety.

Meanwhile, it seems the council ignored repeated reports of danger to Franz Josef before the village was flooded. Insurance damage in the flood, 12 months ago has been put at $30 million.

A firm called Techno Economic Services (NZ) Ltd, solely owned by Neha Bubna, was registered as a company on 14 November.

The latest figures from Realestate.co.nz suggest the residential property market is becoming more of a buyer’s market.

It was the highest number of new sale listings the website has received in a March month in five years, and only the second time in the last 10 years that new listings in March have exceeded new listings in February.

In Auckland the trend was even more pronounced, with the website newly listing 4700 properties for sale in March, up a whopping 20.5% compared to March last year and the highest number of new listings it has received in the month of March since 2008.

I notice a former All Black got into trouble for drink-driving the other day.
His excuse was he had been “killing a few sheep” with a mate and had a few beers (at least) afterwards in the pub.
(That wasn’t you was it Nasska?)
Well who wouldn’t need to get blind drunk after an afternoon doing in a bunch of terrified ruminants?
Yet another reason to go ….vegequarian.
Spare the sheep, save the planet, and avoid getting done for drink-driving or worse, killing a human or two on the road.

    It appeared to be a cause of drink-driving in this case, Stripes.
    I have collated many instances of freezing workers going on to kill humans as evidence for this theory.
    Fred West slaughtered animals for a living and used his skills on his and Rose’s victims.
    That awful Knight woman in Oz who murdered and dissected her husband and tried to make cannibals of his kids was a freezing worker.
    A man who broke into his ex-partner’s home and murdered her and her new partner a few years ago was a freezing worker.
    It is well-documented that many murderers practised on animals first.
    Killing a mammal lessens the taboo against killing our own species.
    Or is traumatic enough to require getting plastered afterwards.

When is Dan Carter fronting on his DIC. Must be soon or else he has bought himself a wet bus ticket penalty. I see he was recently off to Florence to take in the sights. He sure has a tough life.

Also the other idiot Ali up on drug charges is due to explain to the French judiciary why he was buying drugs on a Paris Street. I hear he is finding it hard to be the funny man.
