  Secret trial, no evidence put forward, no appeal.
  About hundred such trials have occurred since the coup three years, but this is the harshist penalty.

The IMF calls the revelation “shocking” and says the figure is an “extremely robust” estimate of the true cost of fossil fuels. The $5.3tn subsidy estimated for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments.

The vast sum is largely due to polluters not paying the costs imposed on governments by the burning of coal, oil and gas. These include the harm caused to local populations by air pollution as well as to people across the globe affected by the floods, droughts and storms being driven by climate change.

[Lord] Nicholas Stern, an eminent climate economist at the London School of Economics, said: “This very important analysis shatters the myth that fossil fuels are cheap by showing just how huge their real costs are. There is no justification for these enormous subsidies for fossil fuels, which distort markets and damages economies, particularly in poorer countries.”

NZs National Party has never had a six seat majority in the last three elections. To hear the doomsayers in UK bleating that it is all over for Cons Party ,makes them sound like born MSM losers.Suppose with that lot, what else is new.

    I could be wrong but I think it is easier to keep 318 MPs in line when you have to rely on a coalition partner than it is when you are governing alone with a 60-100 majority. Now anyone knows that if they cause too much trouble it could bring down THEIR government and possibly end their turn at the trough.

Labour hoping to change the voters minds with their Immigration Policy. They have had to swallow one dead rat to justify their kiwi build program by admitting that they need tradesmen to get the scheme up and running so the figure that they will allow now is 30,000 per year down from the 70,000 that is allowed now. They have also said they will change the time you have to live in NZ from two years to three years before be allowed to access a welfare benefit. So Andrew Little and Labour have been gasping for air in the last couple of weeks with the UK Elections so it will be interesting to see if this helps to elevate his Party in the Polls leading into the September 23rd Election.

  That raises some interesting questions. I wouldn’t mind betting the downstream cost of his offending would probably be higher than the cost of the young South African girls needs. Add the cost of his jail time, monitoring and supervision plus the cost of the psychological effects on his victims and future victims and costs to Immigration NZ would be significantly higher.
  
  Now that immigration has become an election issue this story will get no traction whatsoever.

    It costs about $100k/year to keep someone in prison – not to mention the social costs of the offending.
    
    The South African girl would cost far less than that to support.
    
    But this is not a choice between the two. We don’t have to accept either in NZ.
    
    The South African girl will not get the support she needs in South Africa. The way things are heading there she’d be a candidate for being treated like a political refugee.

      There is a clear difference, we do have to support Akbari because we and INZ are stuck with the potato they decided to microwave. We have no choice in that regard…until he offends again..(I didn’t say if). Provided her parents are taxpayers then I have no issue with the young girl staying and having access to the health care system. Australians can come here, sit on the benefit and enjoy free medical care while we are not afforded the same so the rules are an ass as is the system.

    Recently begun, if you go for any health checks such as blood tests you are now being asked whether you are a NZer, or your immigration status.
    I was told by a health worker some non-NZ’ers have shown their displeasure at being charged for health care. Tough I say, who do they think pays for their care?

      Not that recent WG. My first daughter was born 20 years ago. Her mother (my wife) was asked for her passport even though she had 2 other children at that hospital many, many years earlier. A quick records check would have revealed that but because she is Asian the question was automatic and embarrassing….mostly for her as she is a proud kiwi of over 35 years.

        I am assuming asking the nationality of those giving birth will have been routine for some time. Taking of blood is a fairly cheap affair in comparison to other tests, but I was pleased health are covering all bases. I have also recently been asked my nationality when attending a local hospitial appointment.

Erm, yes they do, Metiria. The agency services are a cost and are paid by the tenant in the form of rent, rent being a reflection of all costs + profit margin (although in NZ the profit is typically in the capital gain) Whether it is charged upfront or spread out weekly, it is still a cost.

  The rental is determined by the market, not by what the landlord wants. If there’s twenty people after one house the rent goes up. Six months later if there’s a glut of rental properties the tenants may force a rent reduction. If the landlord incurs an additional expense, e.g. major drain repairs, he can’t just randomly increase the rent.

    MCos, the landlord is in the business of medium term rental provision. Like the Motel business, only longer.
    
    If the market is saturated and rents fall below (total) return, then the landlord exits the market as their business is losing money. If he stays in, he’s more of a charity worker than landlord.
    
    When enough landlords do this, as they will be forced to do by opportunity cost, the rental market eventually contracts and prices rise, so long as tenant demand stays constant or rises.

For everyone else, he says: “I refer to it as a poverty creation programme.”

OK, it’s a slow day here on Kiwiblog, and as David Garrett in particular has been eagerly clamouring for this update, and having received the paperwork back from my IP lawyer, I’m now in a position to announce the final copyrighted and trademarked version of Kimbo’s law. The NZ trademark office insisted on a few changes that should remove confusion. So the new and final formulation of Kimbo’s law is as follows:

“in blogworld the validity of an argument is in inverse proportion to the use of emphatic adverbs”

So what does it mean? Despite some confusion here on Kiwiblog, including some who struggle to identify and distinguish adverbs from adjectives, nouns and other parts of speech (I recommend Maggy Wassilief’s grammatical remedial services to address the problem),

…Kimbo’s law never declared open season on adverbs. Where nuance and precision are required, they remain a good friend of Kiiwbloggers. Nonetheless, it is the emphatic adverbs such as

“absolutely”

“definitely”

“undoubtedly”

“obviously”

and “clearly”

…that, especially when used in abundance, are rhetorical shills. If your idea and/or argument are a turd, it cannot be polished. Nonetheless there are some who still try and roll it in adverb glitter in an attempt to convince the feeble-minded.

And as always, the test remains – if you can remove the emphatic adverb, but lose no meaning, then it is likely a shill. For example, as my good friend holysheet has remarked here on these pages on many occasions,

“Kimbo’s law is ~~absolutely~~ brilliant!”.

Thanks, hs, but as you can see, you didn’t need the emphatic adverb. Also, as explained before, hyperbolic and/or sarcastic use of emphatic adverbs are definitely, clearly and absolutely not breaches of Kimbo’s law.

Now, as you were, and I’ll provide another update as and when I hear back about my IP applications for “Postcards from Stars and Stripes”, and “holysheet-school-of-wilful-and-capricious-spelling”.

People wishing to use the shower will have to leave their car keys or something similar at the centre’s reception in exchange for the key to use the facilities”.

So if you don’t have a car you can leave items such as plastic sheets, bags of glue or cardboard as a deposit instead.
Also I believe the free showers should be extended to Pak n Save shoppers.

  It is east of Mt Maunganui towards Papamoa and to get there without transport is a very long walk over the Harbour Bridge.
  As they have no money buses would be unavailable.

  I think you are right. Once saw an interesting conversation between a feminist and a post-modernist. The latter was making the point that while may one may pragmatically accept the need for radical-critical methods to restrain oppression, nonetheless, “Who watches the watchmen?/Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? The response from the feminist, while not addressing the problem as perceived by a post-modernist (or logical-positivist for that matter) nonetheless made perfect sense if one practices identity politics – where there is oppression we must oppose it.
  
  Oh, yes, and there is an inherent contradiction in the foundation of post-modernism, that post-modernists usually readily acknowledge – there are no statements of objective truth, other than…there are no statements of objective truth.

      Yes, as distinct from the cyclical view that prevailed in the Ancient Near East. And why Marxism has been labelled by some “a Christian heresy”. And a bit like Christians when challenged about the flaws in practice…the ideology/faith has never been implemented as prescribed.         I am more interested in getting to grips with these non-linear, non-teleological views of time, like the cyclical Near Eastern view you mention. I used to assume, lazily, that the Pacific cultures all had a non-linear, essentially cyclical vision of time, but it turns out that certain societies, like the Sepik societies of New Guinea, conceive of time as aimed forward, and as punctuated by apocalypses. And even in Polynesia the importance of genealogy gives many reckonings of time a linear quality. The great Pacific scholar Niel Gunson, who began as a missionary and then got obsessed with pagan Polynesian religions, reckons that there are two layers of time-cognition in Polynesian culture – a linear, genealogical layer and a ‘shamanic’, or cyclical layer…

        Ok. Not sure if it is in the same ballpark, but the Ancient Hebrew world also operated in and incorporated both. Their religious/social/political feasts – Pesach, Shavouth, Succoth, and also new Moon celebrations, reflect cyclical reality, and, most likely, many Ancient Near Eastern antecedents. Passover – in springtime, anticipating the harvest, is fused with teleological redemption from Egypt.
        
        And the two versions of the Decalogue give different motives for observing Sabbath – in Exodus 20 as it is in keeping with the natural order as it was made (“God rested on the Seventh Day”), whereas in Deuteronomy 5 with redemption and progress to a new order (“you too were a slave in Egypt”).

A lot of the early observers of Polynesia looked at rituals and feasts and perceived similarities with ancient Israel (of course, some of them then went on to construct barmy theories about lost tribes of Israel – theories that are still taken seriously by more than a few people in places like Tonga and Fiji!).

Coincidence, but with many affinities, including with Maori – a collection of tribes built on the history of a great migration, with concepts of charisma/mana, ritual holiness and uncleanness/tapu, and belonging to a particular land. Hence Maori Christian expressions of Christianity such as Ringatu and the Ratana Church found much instruction in the institutions of the Old Testament.

    I didn’t watch the show, but I’m sure Latta and Campbell would not be well informed about robotics. Robots have been in use for decades.
    
    One of the most interesting robotics companies in the world is based in Dunedin – Scott Technology. Did the pair talk to Scott staff? This company is active in robots in NZ, China, and the United States, and supplies automation equipment up to the scale of whiteware production lines, to a big number of countries.
    
    Robotics is becoming more sophisticated. For example Scott synchronises some of its robots with X-ray technology, and others with time-of-flight technology to synchronise tasks with moving objects.
    
    Robotics, with some other technologies, such as 3D printing, will create new products, create new demand by bringing down prices for others, open new markets, and of course create new employment as well as eliminate some boringly repetitive or dangerous jobs.
    
    Inandout might get his/her wish (12.58 post). Avatars could already replace Latta and Campbell, and save taxpayers cash in subsidies for their TV shows.

    UI comes in two types.
    
    A new form whereby it is a base income for all citizens – and they earn on top of that through employment or self employment. The difficulty in implementation is ability to afford a rate equal to the pension. Introducing it at a lower level than the pension would cause poverty to some of the oldies.
    
    An income payment to those without employment – beneficiaries, pensioners (as now) and also students (universal allowance) and non working partners (to take account of the need for two income families to afford accommodation) and chance of scarcity of employment with new technology. But this need not be at the same rate for all (not as high as that paid to pensioners)
    
    Neither promotes the same income for all as such, given it is unrelated to earnings from work, paid services, or investments.

        The economy will change and reward things distinctly human. For example, comedians. Providing company. People might earn credits by doing good deeds for others, and undertaking healthy activity, like walking.
        
        The “non-creative” stuff will all be done by machines and be “worthless” in a making-money sense. It provides all the needs.
        
        In other words, we may choose to reward very different forms of activity than we do now.

  Once agriculture dominated employment, then production in the factory (“global marketed”) – yet jobs continued.
  
  Sure there will be driverless cars and forklifts and some trucks, and drones in distribution of the internet purchased and paid for product. More IT in processing business accountability to taxation liability – but still layers of management and governance.
  
  Still personnel jobs in employment, advertising and marketing for business.
  
  Still courts (lawyers) and prisons, social workers, educators and health professionals.
  
  And government.
  
  Still academia, new science, R and D, IT/3D printing/animators/virtual reality, entertainment – creative arts, sports
  
  Still property and construction, niche production.
  
  Tourism, fitness, personal services.
  
  The problem will be dislocation for the workforce during transition periods, change of income while on-going liability for mortgages etc.
  
  Unemployment Insurance on the scale of ACC may be required. A year would work now, but in the future might/would require time for re-training.

    It’s been done this way for decades, it’s an SOP, for them.
    
    But yes, it may be a ruse, to discredit people who take it up. Although the timing of that fake news trend with it is interesting, isn’t it.
    
    I haven’t made up my mind on it yet, I’m waiting for more to come out before I decide. Meantime I’m keeping an open mind on it. This isn’t possible for you, because you don’t have one.

Good article on the Hooerald site about the appalling bail of Akshay Chand that led to the death of Christie Marceau, who he was stalking.

I presume Chand, diagnosed as insane, will stay in secure mental hospital in NZ for the rest of his life, at a seven or eight-figure cost to taxpayers.

Anyone know if he is declared sane at some stage he can be deported, or is he then regarded as innocent?

    One has to be in Court to know how the bail was granted and the terms. The Police default position in my experience has to been to oppose bail in any partly serious matter but not oppose the Bench strongly without good reason. The prosecutor normally deals with bail applications and these are often agreed with the defendant’s counsel before trial. Bonds may be required and enforced.
    Being bailed to a home address only means that a person has an established address of reference and can be expected to be found there if, and only if, required to be there at a particular time. A curfew is frequently a condition and Police may check, sometimes in the middle of the night. The Police usually have a set of conditions to put before the judge for consideration in any particular case.
    
    It is not easy to pull the wool over the eys of the Police or the Court; they have heard all the stories before.

Anyway who owns a house near this motel probably just saw their property value collapse with this announcement.
If this deal goes ahead within a couple of months of MSD moving the first bunch of scum in this place will become the biggest dump in town.

At one point it was male teachers who were marginalized just because they were male, to the point of the teaching profession almost becoming female-only. Now it’s women who are doing the offending.     Reminds me of the rather dry quip my Greek tutor made back in my theology undergraduate days, when we were first encountering the Gospel of John chapter 2 (I should say, that, if you want to help a beginner with translation, you pitch them into that New Testament book as the language is very simple, like the Old Testament Hebrew of Deuteronomy).
    
    Anyway, he introduced the text that expounds the miracle that Jesus performed at the wedding at Cana in Galilee with the words: “There are two miracles you will encounter here – first Jesus turns water into wine, and then the Baptists turn wine into non-alcoholic grape juice”.
