  Stop at a 4-way stop in South Africa?? Nobody does that for fear of carjackings.
  
  South Africa also has its share of uncontrolled intersections too – mainly outside of the cities.
  
  But the worst part about South Africa is that only something like 30% of the drivers on the road have the correct licenses, so all those lines on the road and signs and stuff are just cute pictures that don’t mean much. Even the numbers for truck drivers are only 50% or so. There is such a shortage of qualified truck drivers that that companies are prepared to put unlicensed drivers in their trucks.

    I visited Ethiopia a few years ago, and truck accidents there are an everyday occurrence. The locals refer to truck drivers there as al Queda because they kill thousands of Ethiopians every year! The first piece of advice we were given was never to follow a truck up a hill because there was a better than even chance it would run out of steam and roll backwards.

        No ztev – actually I had family who were at a school run by a missionary organisation, and we went to spend Christmas with them.
        
        Actually, it was two Christmases; the normal western observance on 25th December which was just another day for most Ethiopians, then the Ethiopian Christmas which that year was around the 5th of January.
        
        And because Ethiopia operates on a different calendar from most of the rest of the world, as soon as we arrived in Addis Ababa, we stepped back from 2007 to 1999!

  I will throw in a new twist – neither vehicle has ‘right of way’ so ‘road courtesy prevails’ which is how old editions of the Road Code put it (I do not know about later editions).
  At uncontrolled intersections a car going straight ahead has to give way to a car on its right and a car turning right has to give way to all other traffic. So neither car should proceed unless its driver is sure the other car will slow down or stop as appropriate. The ‘four stops’ on the Abel Smith/ Cuba intersection reinforces this. Having to stop gives an opportunity to get the brain into gear , although caution and courtesy shown by most drivers makes this intersection a pain. Council has looked at lights etc but the issue is in the ‘too hard’ basket.
  Abel Smith Street is a peculiar beast – it is nowadays blocked to through traffic at Willis Street and at the other end a right turn into Taranaki Street is effectively forbidden. Interestingly there is no red ‘no right turn’ arrow there but a left arrow road marking, a blue ‘turn left’ sign and a traffic island effectively pronounces ‘thou shalt not turn right’ or for that matter drive straight across Taranaki Street into the Z Service Station.

    Your first sentence in the second para is so right peterwn.
    
    When I got my drivers licence at 15 and a few months on 5 October 1961 this was known as the Right Hand Rule and you had to know it. It was basic common sense and worked well.
    
    Give way to traffic on your right and when turning right give way to all traffic.
    
    Of course there were hardly any roundabouts, stop signs or give way signs then.

      Those were the days. The biggest grizzle the local traffic officer had was people turned up for a driving test and did not know the road code (he asked 10 or so questions including the right hand rule). So if you had swotted your road code you were off to a good start. He transferred from council to MOT employment got disillusioned with MOT, chucked it in and purchased a dairy.

    Anyone with any sense drives cautiously and is always prepared to take evasive action even when they are in the right.

Wellington CC has blown the social housing budget with 10 (or 20) years of commitments to go.

Wellington’s $400 million 20 year social housing budget has been spent in the first 10 years. $220 million from the taxpayer and the rest of the planned spending coming from social housing rental income at 70% of market rates.

Wellington spend on social housing is not allowed to use ratepayer funds but sounds like they are softening the ratepayers up to do just that, blaming their poor planning and budgeting.

Actually they didn’t say poor planning and budgeting – they blame “an increase in insurance, construction and GST costs” for spending a 20 year budget in 10 years, with commitments still to be fulfilled.

And are they now softening up the ratepayer for rate increases? Sounds like it.

Councillor Brian Dawson, who holds the social development portfolio, said ……

“The Ship process was designed to help maintain the independence of city housing from general rates. I believe being able to completely do that remains an open question.”

Time for the Audit Office to have a good look.

    I agree, except there will always be some – a few – who need extra help, temporary or permanent. So we have the Accommodation Supplement (billions paid by taxpayers) for just that purpose.
    
    That AS is firmly rooted in the national psyche and budget now so ain’t going nowhere.
    
    The original intention of the AS was to solve an income problem, not a housing problem, by putting all rentals whether public or private on the same footing. Labour got rid of it for state hosuing, which is now cheaper for tenants than the AS hence increased demand.
    
    Of course there are prospective tenants who have two shows of getting a private rental due to poor teancy or credit records. I don’t count those among the few that need extra help, nor those that need temporary help that turns into cheap rent for life.

  Politely asking a woman if she wants to go out for drink can easily be twisted into some huge sexual harassment transgression.
  
  And if you to end up actually going on a date and getting in the mood for some loving then you better have your lawyers on call to come draw up some consent paperwork so you don’t end up on some rape charges because Ms decides to change her mind 5 hours after having sex.

  I read that many roading projects around NZ are being shelved, probably so the ‘free’ education gets off the ground. Don’t know about Transmission Gully, but that should save many millions if canned.

    You cant shelve road projects that were just election fodder.
    
    In 2012 national offered Rotorua a new bypass from the airport to city- with lovely plans and all- after the election they cancelled it.
    
    LOL.. Come 2017 National offers Rotorua a 4 lane version of the existing road from airport to city…. not any plans this time as it was a panic move just weeks before voting.
    
    None of these roads fix the real problem of the logging trucks from the south having to go through suburban roads before getting on road to Mt Maunganui.

  I read somewhere that the changing weather is caused by there being four seasons, with one dedicated to hot weather and another to cold. I’m not sure if this is true, but if it is perhaps the answer is to have only one season; that way we can be assured of a comfortable temperature all year round.

And, if it is proven that ‘groper’ actually tapped her on the arm, then it’s hardly grabbing her tit. So her proposed protest march down Queen St with a bunch of silly, over-excitable people who are not interested in facts, may have to be jettisoned. She’s milking this for all it’s worth.       It’s hard to see in the video but it *looks* like – looks like a quick light touch. Not a grab.
      
      That’s what it looks like – in the video it is seen from maybe 20-30 metres away – and slightly obscured.
      
      He could’ve grabbed the side of her right breast. But it looks every bit like he obviously knew what he was doing was very naughty – and therefore it wasn’t over the top. It looked to be at the very low end of the scale for the type of offence.
      
      I don’t know how much difference it would make but if it was a really nasty squeeze that would be a lot worse in my eyes. If it caused physical pain and then there’s some kind of difference between a light touch and planting your whole hand around a breast and having a good grope.

        In some ways I agree with you. Boobs are everywhere in advertising. They sell stuff. The Hollywood celebs wore pretty revealing dresses the other night – deep cleavages, thigh cut dresses etc. They didn’t exactly turn up wearing Burkahs. I love a well-cut gown – but imo there is no need to wear a gown which leaves nothing to the imagination. Less is more but for some reason, the virtuous ladies of the Hollywood set don’t seem to understand that. Besides which, men usually love boobs – haven’t met a man yet who isn’t fascinated with them or wants to get his mitts on them. Tasmania is contesting NZ moves to trademark “manuka honey”. It says it’s been producing it longer than New Zealand.

Maggie has explained before, I seem to recall, that manuka is indigenous to Australia as well as NZ.

        Was manuka honey in international demand before Welsh scientist (in NZ), Peter Molan, established its medicinal properties? It seems to me that if the intellectual property of manuka honey morally belongs to anyone it belongs to his estate (Peter Molan died in 2015).
        
        The honey industry, including manuka honey, began with British settlers who brought with them the necessary honey bees.
        
        Let’s not be carried away by our sales pitch for manuka honey. If we were smart, we would direct some State research subsidies into the feasibility of creating new types of honey with various pharmaceutical properties.
        
        Presumably manuka will grow in many countries with similar climates to NZ and south-east Australia. More foreign competition in manuka honey is certain. Perhaps, instead of trying to seize the rights to the name “manuka” the NZ industry should establish a brand name that it can protect.
        
        Trying to enforce intellectual rights to the term “manuka” would likely be difficult in countries as widespread as China, Russia, Argentina, Mexico and Zimbabwe.

      Ozzie researchers have been checking through lots of their other Leptospermum species to see if any are as good as manuka for producing high MGO honey.

    Tea tree oil (also spelt Ti Tree ) comes from Melaleuca alternifolia and is a big Ozzie earner.

Usually when I turn on CNN it’s the opposite of Fox, a panel criticising Trump. But instead Amanpour was on and she was interviewing Billie Jean King about the Golden Globes, sexism and harassment.   France is predominantly a Catholic country, or it was. A lot of these Christians don’t seem to be as committed as they once were. However that doesn’t mean that other religions don’t still have the commitment to traditional practices that seem baffling to outsiders.
  Cows are sacred to hindus, Muslims & Jews don’t eat pork, Buddhist monks & Catholic priests are celibate, etc etc

With all the cyclists being killed last year, can their relatives sue the Green pardy and the local councils for encourgaing them to cycle.

NZ has narrow roads, that are just not built for cycling and never will be.

My local council (Tauarnga) conducted a survey last year on our attitudes to our transport “system”, and every question was loaded towards me wanting to cycle or go by bus.
No I don’t I want to use my car. Tga is too sprea out.
When I see all the councillors biking to work every day, then I’ll think about it.

    I was having a discussion with an acquaintance who follows Kiwiblog and we discussed what is becoming of it and we wondered if DPFs heart is still in it?
    
    Priorities understandably change when one has a child and with Labour in power he might not see it as a good use of his previous time running positive angles on news coverage to without National in power.
    
    With only 1 or 2 articles per day, I’m thinking DPF is very much in maintenance mode with his blog while he decides what he wants to do.
    
    Hopefully it’s just a summer recess whilst he enjoys the Wellington sun with his son.
    
    What’s your take – have you ever seen Kiwiblog this quiet in terms of Posts by the author?

      I’ve reflected on your question before responding.
      
      Like you, I’ve noticed a change in Kiwiblog posts over time. My guess is that DPF has decided to scale back his blogging activities, and to enjoy quality family time (nothing wrong with that). When you look at Kiwiblog posts, many of them are based on a mainstream media story, and are designed to promote discussion. But DPF still publishes the occasional in-depth post, particularly in relation to political polling trends.
      
      I guess, as readers, each of us comes to Kiwiblog for different reasons. I’ve always said that I come here to be entertained and informed – in that order. I don’t really bother with any other blogs, partly because I don’t have time, but partly because they’re not as interesting to read.
      
      I miss some of the older commentators like Reid, and some of the newer commentators seem to have one objective: to disrupt discussion.
      
      I have to admit there are days when reading Kiwiblog makes me think of how things used to be. But ultimately this is DPF’s blog project, and I hope he continues to maintain the best NZ blog (in my view) for our enjoyment!
