Michael Wolff’s sensational White House exposé paints Trump as a childlike nonentity sustained by our grim fascination

Fire and Fury also gives the lowdown on the lacquered trompe-l’oeil that is Trump’s hairdo, with those tinted tendrils combed over a cranium that is totally bald and resonantly empty. But beyond such acts of exposure, what makes the book significant is its sly, hilarious portrait of a hollow man, into the black hole of whose needy, greedy ego the whole world has virtually vanished. Wolff deplores Trump, explains the conditions that made him possible, and accuses us all of colluding in this madness.

He begins by asserting Trump’s nihilism, even his nonentity. The Fox ideologue Roger Ailes concluded that he lacked both principles and backbone. An economic adviser in the White House regards him as “less a person than a collection of terrible traits”. Or perhaps of terrifying tweets – Trump doesn’t and maybe can’t read, so he finds coherent speech problematic, and soon degenerates into doddery repetition or vile invective; Twitter is his chosen mode of utterance because it matches the spasmodic urges by which he is impelled.

Is there a new Kiwibuild target for the first 3 years? Mr Twyford has said 16,000 in this period, including 10,000 in 2020 and in following years 10,000+ to reach the 100,000 target.

However I see a poster in GD on 12 January (ztev) says target is 3.5k in the first 3 years so the Kiwiblog counter needs adjustment.

Has there been a revised target and I missed it?

    The previous 3 years actual build was 87K

      There has been an uptrend in building consents granted for several years. Almost certainly would have been higher if the RMA changes had been in place. Obviously a delay between consent and finished but Statistics NZ numbers look close to the 200,000 over 6 years.
      
      The potential problem is with Kiwibuild as the 100,000 are additional.
      
      In the 12 months to 30 November 2017, consents were issued for 31,123 new homes of all kinds, including 21,178 stand-alone houses. In the previous 12 months (to November 2016), consents were issued for 30,399 homes, including 21,391 houses.

        As can be seen that Auckland building activity based on what code of compliances were issued is way less than what had been reported !!!

  Get used to it. The COL will come up with excuse after excuse as to why they can’t keep their election promises. The reason why so many of them have been sent to a “Comittee” is so when it reports back they can back out of a election promise or implement something (Capital gains tax) which they dare not tell the voters before hand. The other trick was their “Wishy Washy” statements like “Fair for all” which turned in National wage agreements.

President Trump may not have the support of the majority in his country any more than you have in NZ. However, has it occurred to you that NZ needs the US more than the US needs NZ? The same of course applies to Oz.
    
    Has it also occurred to you that President Trump has been known to hold grudges? That would not matter if he just retaliated by referring to you as that Commie Chick. Just come back from a nice weekend up at the Volcanic Plateau where we did the Tongariro Crossing Walkway.
Had to laugh when I went to breakfast at the hotel and they had a jug of almond milk in the buffet, obviously they were expecting a bunch of pussies or maybe just Clarke Gayford.
The walk itself was pretty good even though it was completely over run by foreigners.
Most were from civilized western countries so met S&S’s impeccable standards but a few were from third world shitholes unfortunately which just pulled the whole tone of the place down.
I’m sure there would have been more of them but luckily the rubbish bins are not cleared on Saturday in Mt Roskill so they were otherwise occupied scavenging for leftovers.
One such example was a rickshaw boy from the subcontinent who thought that a pair of jandals was good footwear for the track.
When I encountered this idiot he was clutching his toes and asking other walkers if they had any sticking plaster.
Well yes I have actually but for a retard like you no I don’t so best I can suggest is to wrap a chapati around it and piss off.
As for the ugly chick with the dragon tattoo on her pimply arse who I rustled squatting behind a rock, toilets have been invented in this country so why don’t you learn how to use them as showing your bum in public is enough to make any guy flaccid for weeks afterwards.
Finally to the shuttle bus driver who gave a cultural talk before we got off about how the mountains were sacred to Māori and we should respect this while walking, I knew all along you were a fraud buddy and shame on you for thinking you could trick a veteran bigot such as S&S that easily.
He later redeemed himself however in a one on one conversation calling it all bullshit and chucking a couple of slurs in for good measure.
I thought this was quite touching on his part and I departed thinking what an all round top guy he was.

  Far too energetic a stroll for my partner but she really enjoyed a smaller walk around a lake (Rotopounamu) on the saddle between Lake Rotoaira and Lake Taupo. Hour-long, beaut bush, a small BEACH, would you believe, NO crowds, idyllic…

Stars: Very droll sir…I met a similar “top guy” Maori while on holiday recently. We sat and had a long talk about New Zealand history, the so called Treaty, the illegal land confiscations of the 1860’s…and a rahui being declared over a beach, the terms of which the local Maori didn’t deign to share with the rest of us.

“Fukin bullshit mate” my friend said…”They should put up a fuckin sign so everyone knows. And half these jokers who declare these things have got no authority anyway”.

One really interesting thing about our talk: after my friend expounded at length about how tribalism was a major reason for Maori problems, I asked him if he identified as a member of his iwi or as a Maori first. After considerable thought, he said he was a member of his iwi first, and a Maori second.

  The whole idea to lump Maori together as homogenous group a contrivance. Same as the Pacifika thing you pointed out recently and same deal in South Africa.
  
  I was once talking to a Zulu bloke about some issue pertaining to Africans. He said something like: “I am not an African. I am a Zulu. There are Xhosas in Africa, there are boers (Afrikaners) and English people in Africa, I am a Zulu person in Africa.”
  
  A conversation with a Pondo person went pretty much the same.

      Sure, tribalism hasn’t done them much good (all the inter-tribal conflict – then and now), but racism (ie. identifying as Maori) has probably done them even more damage.
      
      There can be a lot of benefit from feeling you belong to a group: a sense of fitting into the world, responsibility, security etc. This is why Nationalism etc can be strong (and often positive) influences.
      
      But those have to be the groups that are meaningful to people that fit within a cultural context.
      
      For example, I am white and I originally come from South Africa. Many people might choose to put me in a the same bucket as Afrikaners called “White South Africans”. However Afrikaans was a completely foreign culture/set of values to mine. White might be what was on the government forms etc, but it is not how the people identified. I would say I understood Zulu culture and values better than I understood Afrikaner culture and values.
      
      Call a Scot a “white person from Uk” and you’re likely to get a “Glasgow kiss” and be told fook off I’m a Scot. I’d think the same could be applied to Maori.

I think Australia has overstepped the mark with its latest deportation of an allegedly Kiwi crim to NZ. Accordingly to the news item the person was born in American Samoa of Australian parents and is a NZ citizen despite having never set foot in NZ. The news item is short on detail but does some issues such as:
1. On what basis is the person a NZ citizen? Perhaps one parent was born in NZ but has Oz citizenship or perhaps had a NZ grandparent at a time when patriality via grandparent might have been a valid path to citizenship.
2. The person presumably obtained a NZ passport otherwise the Oz authorities may not have rumbled to the person being a ‘kiwi’. Why did the person need a NZ passport?
3. The person may have found it useful to have a NZ passport to help with illegal activities.
4. Perhaps more likely the person needed a passport and at the time found the NZ passport the easiest to obtain. Normally the person would have an Australian passport but being born in American Samoa probably meant there were bureaucratic hurdles to this option. Similarly Uncle Sam would impose even greater hurdles (countries do not like granting automatic citizenship to people born there when parents are not citizens or permanent residents).

Since the parents are Australian and the person spent most of his life in Australia and has never set foot in NZ, Australia should just put up with it and not try to unload the problem on to NZ.

    Note that there are two Samoas as a result of history (on different sides of the International Date Line as tweaked by Samoa several years ago). There is American Samoa (main airport at Pagopago) which is a USA territory. Its citizens are not proper USA citizens but appear along with USA citizens to have visa free entry to NZ. Samoa (previously called Western Samoa) is an independent nation with historic ties to NZ but its citizens need visas to visit NZ (but not vice versa).
    In this contest alleged violence among Samoans is not really relevant since the person concerned was of foreign parents and would have spent little time in American Samoa.
    The person concerned might have been eligible for American Samoan citizenship (but not USA citizenship) but even then would have found that NZ citizenship (which seemed to be available in his case) was probably easier to obtain and conferred more benefits than American Samoan citizenship.

        When I first got her, I couldn’t take her to a male vet, no matter how nice they were, because she’d tremble in fear the entire time.
        I only heard her growl once in 14 years.
        We were parked in Otara and there were two big brown guys outside the car.

      cmm – Agreed you do not need to get a passport to be deemed a ‘citizen’ , but rules can change. However once you assert citizenship by applying for a certificate of citizenship or a passport you would generally be immune to rule changes, although some people in UK have not had UK passports renewed on the grounds they should not have received them in the first plave.

  This is my own situation. I got a NZ passport on the strength of my British birth certificate, my father’s NZ birth certificate and British marriage certificate. Requirements have changed slightly – it seems you now need to apply for a NZ ‘certificate of citizenship’ as a pre-requisite to obtaining a NZ passport or exercising rights of NZ citizenship.
  I am generally supportive of Australia’s stance on crims of foreign citizenship but I think this instance on the facts available goes one step too far. It seems to me that the Australian authorities are relying on some technical hitch (eg failure of the parents to ‘register’ the child’s birth in Australia). The person is basically Australian by descent and the Australian authorities should leave it at that rather than relying on the person happening to have NZ citizenship (which may not have been properly obtained anyway).
  The NZ Government should simply cancel the person’s NZ passport – I doubt the person would object.

    Both sides fought with great brutality in the Haitian revolution, and life as a pre-revolution slave was extremely brutal. After the revolution, most Haitians still experienced brutal conditions of serfdom.
    
    Part of Haiti’s tragedy is that, under the threat of the violent reimposition of French rule, independent Haiti agreed to reimburse former slave holders for their losses, but had to borrow money at interest from French banks to do so. IIRC, Haiti didn’t finish the repayments until 1947!
    
    How much this has contributed to Haiti’s current state of shitholiness, I don’t know, but obviously this money was consequently not available for investment in economic development.

      The Norwegians have just launched two hybrid 500 passenger cruise liners with two more building. For a small country (just a little larger than NZ) Norway is very technologically advanced.
      
      As I understand it Norway does not have open slather immigration and once there immigrants a now subject to some fairly stringent regulation.

I spent the New Year tending to my dying 19yr old cat.
A couple of days after I’d interred him and plopped a kaffir-lime shrub atop, 3 little kittens poked their heads out from under our house.
Now they are not Ptolemy’s babies, for he had his op when 3 months old…. neither are they the babies of my other 2 cats (another 19yr old and an 8yr old).
They are either offspring of the wild/feral cats that inhabit Kaiti Hill or they are dumped domestics from the ferals that inhabit my ghetto.
Because I am a sucka, I can’t let the little beasties starve, but I am not willing to take on the long-term care of young cats…so I am trying to get them tame enough that some other sucka will take them on, otherwise they will have to be put down.
Any other options?

  I once contacted the SPCA when previous tenants abandoned their oddball cat. The SPCA’s response was “can’t you keep him”. In the end that’s what happened despite our cat not being in favour of the idea. ?

    I’m not a fan of SPCA wrt to cats. (or dogs)
    19 years ago, one of their silly ladies wouldn’t allow me to have a couple of their kittens, because I had children in the house!
    So the kids got Ptolemy and Cleopatra from a pet store instead… and managed to look after them fine.
    
    A lovely lady from “Mutts & Moggies” (charitable trust that arranges care for some animals) came out to look at the kittens on Friday… but the buggas had disappeared overnight and didn’t come back ’til late in the afternoon.
    “M&M” doesn’t organise rehousing of kittens… just desexing for low-income families.
    I’m sure I can stretch hubby’s pension to a few snips for the kittycats.

  I live just along the road from you and would love to share home with a cat again. However, being in an apartment on the top floor of the Emerald it’s just not possible….well possible maybe but not fair to the cat.
  I’ve asked around the Emerald team and one has referred me to Gisborne Pet Adoption & Rescue – accessible on Facebook. They work closely with the vets up Gladstone Rd opposite Pak ‘n’ Save.

After watching this offensive, abomination of an advert I’ve cancelled my Netflix subscription. The advert is blatant, wall start to beginning promotion of open relationships, swinging, miscegenation and literal; cuckolding. It is literally sick.

The great thing though is reading the comments section. It is very heartening that people are waking up to the agenda and can see straight through it. The level of awareness gives me hope that all is not lost as people wake up.

  There is literally nothing, nothing, more toxic and more damaging at a societal level then growing up in a single mother household, beyond the severest outright abuse or neglect.
  
  You can be physically or mentally afflicted, you can be dirt poor, you can live in a country torn apart by war or a corrupt political system, and you still will score better on tests of well-being and EQ then a single mother house-hold in a first world country.
  
  Of course what EAD is referring to are the statistical realities of the liklihood of single mother-hood and domestic violence based on certain relationship pairings.
  
  That is unavoidable. Can’t judge an individual by an aggregate, but you can validly question endless propaganda acting like those statistics don’t exist and aren’t an issue.

But no background at all to his Jerusalem decision which they allowed us to think came out of the blue (or his crazed mind) when in fact it has been US policy since about 1995 when Congress passed a bill that it was the capital of Israel.
In a way it’s a shame that news officially begins again 22 January on Radio NZ as weeks of Sky, CNN, Fox and BBC have been more than adequate.

Yes as I have always said.

NZ is not a low wage economy.
Our miniumm wages are higher than the USA, Canada, Chile, Argentina and most others.

Its just that we live next door to Australia which has one of the highest wages in the world.

But we are a HIGH cost country.

And if we keep increasing our minimum wage each year by huge amounts, then we will price tourists off our market.
As well as killing our exporters (and employers)

How is it selfish to point out that the service has become more difficult for me to use? Genuine question. I regret that I may have to get more cabs. That costs taxpayers more. Also, I want the service to work well – that would mean less traffic around the airport.

It’s not all about you Ms Genter. “Ordinary people” look at the schedule, look at their flight times, and get on a bus that will get them there on time. Maybe you should try that.

The first substantial report on business confidence for 2018 is due tomorrow. I have been watching the rather dismal performance of the NZX of late in comparison to other world stockmarkets and it will be interesting to see whether the business confidence report reflects that.

‘F***ing useless. Make this your last week’: forestry worker loses ERA dispute over expletive-laden text

An expletive-laden text message was at the centre of an Employment Relations Authority (ERA) decision released this week.

“F-ing useless. Make this your last week, f-ing wasting my time,” said the February 8, 2017 text sent by Chilton Logging’s Blair Chilton to forestry worker Arona Gray, who was at the time employed as a gang foreman.

Gray said that he took this to mean that he had been fired and that it amounted to an unfair dismissal.

Despite claiming that he believed his employment to have been terminated, Gray returned to work the following day and worked a half day before leaving in frustration. “I’ve had enough – I’m not coming tomorrow,” he told a co-worker on the site.

It sounds like both sides agreed that he was in the wrong job!

Gang foreman is not an elected position & the fact that Mr Chilton is still capable of standing never mind withholding holiday pay speaks heaps of Gray’s good nature & forbearance.

“This report will provide an authoritative picture of the state of housing in New Zealand today, drawing on the best data available.

The report was to be done before Christmas and it is now 15 January. Surely it is about time for it to be released?

  Twyford’s department runs at about the same pace. Six brand spanking new Housing NZ apartments were finished off a couple of blocks away in December right down to carpets, drapes, whitewear, garden shed. In my neck of the woods they would be worth $600 per week in the private rental market.
  
  They have been empty for weeks! Where are all the people sleeping in cars? Maybe they are holding them for the first shipment of refugees.

    Correct Nasska. I alluded to this in an earlier post re a friend who left the Exclusive Brethren.
    
    He wasn’t however beaten to a pulp or killed and neither was his wife to be who also left. They were excommunicated.
    
    Part of me felt sorry for the mother of the daughter who refuses to wear the headgear. The Mother has clearly ben brainwashed from day dot to fear eternal damnation. As Dawkins puts it, the worst type of child abuse.

Have a look at the doco on Al Jazeera on Afghan madrassas and what they teach their young girls.

Its really terrible.
Hijab all day.
Read and learn the Quiran. (nothing else except some Arabic)
Go home and help around the house.
Not allowed to listen to music or watch tv.
Not allowed to go out on their own.
They are reduced to utter servitude.
Spread the word to other girls and get them to leave western style schools
Then get married

And the male teachers say their goal is to have islam and the hijab everywhere!

    Dalziel was recently horrified that the street naming legislation for local govt, in chch, had no reference to Te Reo whatsoever, and sought a report on updating the document presumably so unelected maori representatives can be appeased and the naming of new streets can be in Maori. There a big push to rename the new QEII swimming facility out East something Maori but a pushback from community put a stop to it. They are still trying to add a Maori name to it.
    
    Still no further down the track finding out what these unelected members receive in the way of remuneration. It has been confirmed from one councillor that the salary for a few members is fairly extravagant, and Koha for the rest is money not ‘Koha’

I note that Mr Benson-Pope doesn’t appear to have reformed from his bullying habits.
Labour must be in power again.
While many of the city’s historic buildings were being developed, the Princes St buildings remained neglected.
