      My Mum was an ornery soul, ha. Her fave quote was ‘Why be a Bitch? Why not strive for Best Bitch About?’
      
      We did her proud at her funeral – getting a bagpiper in, unannounced, to play Amazing Grace, her fave hymn, and to also play ‘O Flower Of Scotland’ for everyone to SHOUT along to.

I see that the media have reported that the demon Bill English at Ratana has said that Te Reo Maori belongs to Maori.
But the I see that Maori have said that effectively it is taonga and should be embraced by all New Zealanders.
I am sad that at this Labour Party meeting that they appear to have forgotten that National has done more for Maori than Labour ever did or will ever do.
He said that he hoped that as Maori voted for Labour that should get what they deserved effectively.
From Labour they will get stuffed as usual.

  Come on!
  Its a small, ceremonial language, with no written literature, and very few words, and it cannot convey modern thoughts and emotions.
  
  I’d rather see Maori people acknowledge the English language that the settlers gave them as a treasure that should be learned and written and spoken correctly, like millions of Africans and Asians do all over the world.

    The real treasure in te reo is the reserved cultural language which has very restricted users.
    
    The language overall is inadequate for general use in an increasing global world. Even “te reo” just means “the voice”. Words have to be overworked to be purposeful.

    Interestingly, my wife who is a teacher downloaded a resource for her class from MBIE on economic protection.
    
    The resource was bilingual:
    1. Te Reo Maori
    2. Te Reo Pakeha
    
    Now my understanding was two of the three official languages were Maori and English. Te Reo Pakeha is not a language.
    
    I suspect it is a construct of “woke” public servants trying to demonstrate virtue.
    
    Or perhaps an attempt to replace English with a hybrid pidgin language

    Maori seats were supposed to give Maori an independent voice in Parliament and the legislative process.
    
    This has been eroded, and is now defunct as all seats have been absorbed by Labor.
    
    Accordingly these seats should be abolished as they no longer achieve their original intent.
    
    Furthermore, integration of Maori into the general electorate will help achieve ONE NEW ZEALAND rather than the apartheid system we presently have.

Of the closest Maori school friends that I have keep relationships with over the years the two who went to Aus and the one that went to the USA have done well, have good jobs and fly home often to visit family. The two that stayed in NZ live in state houses and have menial jobs. All of use got UE.

  Yes we all have to embrace Maori apparently. One question – why? Surely it’s up to Maori to keep their own language alive? If it dies out whose fault is that?
  
  After many millions of dollars spent by the government on Maori language initiatives surely that’s enough. If it dies out then why should everyone else be blamed?
  Also I don’t like compulsory teaching of Maori in schools to all children, like it or not. That takes away from our freedom in my opinion.

  National needs to reorientate their policies to reward the disloyalty:
  1. End the Maori seats
  2. An actual cutoff for treaty settlements
  3. End the Waitangi Tribunal
  4. Gut all the apartheid pro-Maori provisions from legislation.

    Yes the revelation of hundreds of millions of dollars of top up payments to Tainui and Ngai Tahu after those tribes had received full and final settlements was very disturbing. As is the knowledge that there are still 47 claims to be settled. I’d really like this settlement process to end. We are now two centuries after the event.

      My respective ancestors were forced out of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Canada, and even Australia because of discrimination, dispossession, economic pressure, poverty, conquest, and persecution.

I said this was great news that it was all finally settled and everyone move on. They both looked at each other and then at me with a strange look — “Oh but we cannot speak for future generations” was the reply I got.

Emma Peel or Olenna Tyrell?
Had an interesting discussion yesterday re the nature of fame.
Youngish relative arrived as I was watching one of my all time favourite TV programmes – The Avengers.
As Emma Peel leapt out of her 1960’s Lotus Elan and confidently engaged in unarmed combat with a hapless villain, my relative almost put down his phone to ask if that was Diana Rigg.
Yes, it was indeed the cool Diana Rigg -she of the catsuits and role model qualities for ‘60’s teenage girls.
“But she’s In Game of Thrones” he said in tones of amazement.
Well, I know her from The Avengers, a show of cult proportions back in the day.
So we discussed her fame. He said GoT was watched by millions and millions in many countries so Dame Diana would be much more famous now.
I said most would remember her as the iconic Emma Peel. We agreed to disagree.

    It is interesting that Diana Rigg stood out so convincingly.
    She was in the series from 1965 to 1968 and was in 51 episodes
    Honor Blackman preceded her with 43 episodes and Linda Thorson afterwards in 33 episodes.
    Rigg was in less than one third of the 161 episodes but made an impact, so to speak.
    
    Diana Rigg will be 80 this year.

      I read many years ago that the name Emma Peel was contrived by the programme makers to stand for man appeal.
      Don’t know if this is true, but wouldn’t go down too well today with all the faux feminist experts out there.
      The Emma Peel character , and Diana Rigg’s portrayal of it, stood out because she was independent, unafraid and super confident in her own white ankle boots.

I see the Herald is calling the 90 day trial rule “Controversial”

Please tell me of the controversies.
I realize that unionists don’t like it.
But where were the controversies and the injustices?
Was there one a week, or one a month, or one a year?

To me it was a great system, that allowed an employer to take a punt on someone and giving them a chance at a job. Maybe an ex convict etc.

  That’s the problem, it’s a great system that has worked really well. Not good for union recruitment, and they will be wanting their pound of flesh from the col. Could be part of Aderns new plan to do things “the Maori way” and they never had a calendar in pre colonial times. That should justify everything.

Notice that the elephant in the room as regards to Jacinda’s pregnancy and Maori protocol has been quietly sweeped under the table. For example it has been said that she will speak a Waitangi on the steps of the meeting house, heaven forbid she be allowed inside in her condition. Yesterday however I noticed that she was in the presence of both Taonga and Tohunga supposedly a no no in Maori culture. Remember the issue re pregnant women and TePapa in 2010.

        A bit like MPs voting together for their pay rise, but at least they are doing something productive the rest of the time.
        Maori have become a mendicant culture, blaming Pakeha for all their troubles and endlessly seeking compensation, while totally ignoring their own contribution to their appalling stats.
        It’s sad, as there used to be some great Maori leaders.

  I’m able to ignore the vile, biased reporting aimed at Trump and will try to ignore the sycophantic reporting of our PM that has changed all our news media into the Womans Day.

Peter Beck of Rocket Lab has announced part of the payload on the recent launch from Mahia Peninsular included a sphere approx 1 metre in diameter with 69 mirror panels he calls the “Humanity Star”. Rather like a giant disco ball. The sphere will orbit the earth and be seen as a bright shooting star. It will take a few days to settle into orbit. ? ?

The launch of the Humanity Star is in hope people will take the time to look up into the night sky to reflect on where we are in the universe and our place in it instead of getting mired in their daily life on earth.

Today is the day when the unions will be given more power through the new employment legislation, taking away the 9o day trial period.
This has to effect the small employer when taking on someone who is not fitting in or being disruptive around other employees becomes a cost to the employer when the unions come in and wave their big stick.
Will these employers be giving someone a go with a dodgy past ? I don’t think so, not now.

The AM show was interesting this morning.
Christine Rankin was on and it came up that she used to be under constant death threats and there were attempted attacks when she was Head of Ministry of Development.
She laid the blame clearly at the feat of the the then Labour govt. The constant media attacks by them with venal and inciting language.

To that end, is our government (and I would include the previous administration) focused on equality of opportunity or equality of outcome? I would suggest the latter.

      Logically, it’s an impossibility. But logic never stopped a post-modernist leftie.
      
      So Labour are going to ‘solve poverty’ through massive raw re-distribution, and increase rheumatic fever and domestic violence, at the same time.
      
      Because here is what we know. Anything called a ‘whole of government approach’ is a recipe for feckless waste and useless futile repetitive endeavour.
      
      There will be goals that are devoid of meaning, stewarded by everybody and therefore nobody.
      
      The PSA talks about ‘unintended consequences’. What they mean is ‘we have to do some work’, and ‘we actually have to do some work’.
      
      They say the BPS goals led to ‘full prisons’ and a ‘punitive benefit system’. Which is nonsense. They don’t substantiate these ludicrous claims. They just say it. Oh, thanks PSA.
      
      What a shame. How unhinged do you have to be to say that solving the empirical manifestations of poverty can only come at the expense of solving abstract poverty?
      
      Remember – reducing rheumatic fever, which is a baseline factor with statistically significant correlations to a cloud of others, comes at the expense of ‘reducing poverty’.
      
      So get ready for raw, primitive re-distribution that will ‘solve’ Ardern’s measures she will pick up from some UN division for woman’s rights run by Pakistani’s and Algerian rape farmers, while at the same time all the indicators of poverty will go up.
      
      Because ‘whole of government’ is a phrase like ‘intersectional intersexuality’ or ‘woman’s studies’ or ‘marxist anthropology’ – if a leftie says it, it means lots of wasted money, lots of useless rhetoric and noble intentions, lots of making everything worse, and no results.
      
      That’s unhinged.

        The biggest dereliction has been by our so called centre right party who have failed to call out their bullshit and paint it in the light it deserves. For example, the minister of dementia should have been pursued mercilessly by them for his “capitalism has failed” comment. Ardern should have been slated for the “definitions of poverty” statement that slid under the radar. Labour campaigned on something they didn’t have a definition for FFS. Instead, National have been watering down the coolaid and now partake in it themselves; ever mindful of focus group/pollster driven reaction. But the punters aren’t happy. The Otago Daily Times reports several customers are unhappy with installations.

Kalgoorlie firefighters pelted with bricks and rocks on the job

Firefighters in Western Australia’s Goldfields will no longer attend fires at an Aboriginal community without a police escort after being pelted with bricks and rocks while on a job. Officers from Kalgoorlie Fire Station were responding to a fire at the Ninga Mia Aboriginal community, around 5km east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, on Tuesday afternoon when the attack began. The firefighters were driving out of the community when two men began attacking their trucks.

Surely the local community would have something to say about this?

The ABC visited the Ninga Mia community and spoke to residents but they did not wish to be interviewed.

Maybe not.

Oh well, next time a building is on fire at this aboriginal community, it’ll burn down by the time the firefighters and police escort get there.

But he would never have charged a North Island tourist; he would have objected to the renewal of their off sales liquor licence, thereby involving the licensee in exceedingly expensive legal fees.
  I have been spending some time reading about history 1933-35 in Germany. The legal establishment there used all sorts of chicanery then to make the life of Jewish businessmen intolerable. Then I looked at the numerous war memorials spotted in every hamlet througout the South Island and wondered;

    I have been spending some time reading about history 1933-35 in Germany. The legal establishment there used all sorts of chicanery then to make the life of Jewish businessmen intolerable.
    
    The antagonism towards Jewish businesses in Germany were two-fold:
    
    1) A history of sharp business practices. Tales of Usury aside, are you aware the character of Rumplestiltskin is based on Germans views of the unsavoury practices of Jews in business?
    
    2) The main one however was the sheer number of generations old German family run businesses that fell into Jewish hands after Jewish Central Banker Rudolf Haverstein destroyed the Deutschmark.
    
    Jews, with their global access to hard currencies from other Jews, were able to buy up German businesses, ruined by hyperinflation, for cents on the dollar.
    
    Stories are dime a dozen of German women being forced into prostitution in Weimar to pay their usurious debts to new class of overnight businessmen amongst other ignomies.
    
    Stories of Nazi Germany need the context of Weimar to be understood

    The central theme to your anecdote revolves around social control/engineering Tauhei. You are correct in that you wouldn’t have been charged but the holder of the licence would have had to endure hell over a matter that was largely out of his control. Had you been a large ethnic & told him to inseminate himself the outcome would have likely been the same if Plod thought a breach of Licensing legislation had been infringed.
    
    It used to be that firstly, people were responsible for what they did so getting pissed was your fault & so long as the publican/supplier used a bit of common sense all was well.
    
    Now the license holder is supposed to be a nanny with a third eye & an infallible ability to predict the future actions of anyone he serves. Whether that was the intended outcome from the legislation I know not but it seems to follow recent trends that no one can possibly be held responsible for the outcome of their own actions.

    This could possibly be the worst doctored picture in internet history.
    
    Three Chinese officials appear to be proudly showing off their newly laid road in Huili, south-west China.
    
    But even somebody who’s never used a computer before would notice that something, or more like everything, doesn’t look quite right in the government’s propaganda image. For the three middle-aged men appear to be levitating several inches above the ground and they are bigger than the rural surroundings. Even the colours of their clothes are a different shade to the scenery and the edges of their bodies are blurred.

While I think on that I have a worry about an elderly woman such as her having a child. It’s well known that as the mother ages the child is more likely to be born faulty.
