  Trump has the US economy booming. Home depot paying out $1000 to its workers because of the tax cut. Auto manufacturer paying out $5k profit share. All because of the tax cuts.

      Stephieboy – there does seem to be an idea that Obama is responsible for the booming US economy? Nothing could be further from the truth.
      Obama had a genius for tamping down US economic growth through identity politics, high regulatory burden, dislike of capitalism, excessive kowtowing to the environmentalists etc etc etc.
      He is the only president not to achieve annual growth of 3%.
      No the credit belongs to Trump and the Republicans. Tax cuts, cutting back burdensome regulations, freeing up the energy sector.
      Basically Trump believes in economic growth. Obama did not.

  Also there are predictions from creditable sources that the US economy will hit 4% growth this year!
  So write this down. The Republicans are going to do well in this year’s elections if those numbers hold. And the NZ economy will do well on the coat tails of the US boom.

Just for a change –

Has everybody noticed the price of fuel creeping up over the last few months? I won’t mention butter etc. etc. etc.

I filled up with diesel in Levin at the end of October for 94.7cpl. Today in Auckland it’s $1.32.9 – almost a 40% rise in three months.

I wish I could get that sort of a pay rise ! ! !

  I heard an ad yesterday for thirty cents/litre off if you did this and that, as an example.

    I live in ChCh and agree its hot & shabby, pity about potentially contaminated water thanks to CCC failing to look after water wells damaged in the quakes 7-8 years ago. On the bright side CCC have done a splendid job in spending $40m on a playground, $25m on city park & god knows how much on Bike lanes all of which are much more valuable to ratepayers than decent roads, safe water and houses for those still living in garages/tents and cars so CCC selling the temp housing constructed for displaced quake victims makes real sense for a Mongoloid Amoeba which councilors still aspire to become.

  I think the clue was in the “Mens Only” description.
  That can so often be an indication that all and any behaviour is acceptable, including pawing the help.
  Desiring a woman sexually doesn’t mean you get to shove your tongue (or anything else) in her ear unnanounced, even if you’ve paid plenty for a ticket to the event.
  While I absolutely concur with your final statement (some of my best friends are men) I cannot agree that a woman – no matter how sexually attractive – should have to tolerate being unceremoniously pounced upon by some entitled jackass.

  In the case of NZF there was a lot of fuss made about Winston being able to dictate the shape of the next government after the recent election, as if he’d actually won the election.
  Generally speaking minor parties fare poorly in coalitions so, while either way he was going to be part of a government, in the long term NZF is going to have to exceed expectations to maintain it’s position of power in three years time.
  If Labour does poorly he’s gone, if Labour does well they won’t need him.

  This is the DHB that regularly underspends and who’s CFO ensures that they are ‘in the black’ each year. What this actually means is that they are underdelivering on service and that clinical staff are made to go without (go without equipment, staff, resources). If I lived in one of the only regions where the DHB underspends each year compared to all the others; I would be asking questions as to what my region is missing out on in health services.

      Thats a very good example Shaun. So rather than either give the consultant ENT specialists more consulting and operating hours (which are filled either by the existing specialists or additional specialist) they would rather show a surplus; often measured in the millions.
      Most specialists aren’t employed as full time. They range from 0.2 to 1.0 (1.o is a full time but is rare). Specialist services are funded on a certain number of “tenths” they can pay for.
      So next time you read about how much money HBDHB saved in a fiscal year; ask how many kids that money could have treated.

        Targets are just that; an arbitrary number to be attained so you can interpret those any way you wish. Did Coleman and Rile set the world on fire as Health Ministers? Not at all but health is an easy target in that regard.

Surely all this is underline the fact that most women are productive in some fields (here programming).

Tilting the field to “help” women will just end up tarring all the women with the same brush: are you here on your own merits, or because of special treatment?

Exactly the same applies to reduced fitness requirements for female soldiers, police and firefighters.

We also have it in Maoris getting into medical school etc. Do you really trust Dr Bro when he’s waving a scalpel around if he didn’t have to jump through the same hoops to get his degree?

In USA, black students can get into many colleges with lower SAT scores etc. “Clock boy” gets the royal treatment at MIT for disassembling (or as he puts it, “inventing”) a clock you can buy at the Warehouse.

All this is going to end up doing is discounting the value of a degree in the hands of some people. If you’re a woman or Dr Bro with a degree then I want to see some other evidence of your competence.

I’ve got absolutely no problem with female programmers (I an honoured to know a few), female cops or Maori doctors. But they should be their on their individual merits – not based on some idealogical group quota.

    When US created easy pathways for blacks to graduate medical school, there were many cases where even blacks refused to be treated by a black doctor. Prejudice was actually fuelled.
    They wanted someone sufficiently competent to qualify on merit. Many black doctors had done just that but were tainted by the ones that were given an easy ride.

    The extensions were for maths papers. Maths and numeracy are frequently confused. Women excel in verbal skills and it showed as cobol programmers. Now the mathematicians have taken over education and want the world to think like them. They may have some abstract logical expression ability but their other life skills are often accordingly diminished. I’m highly numerate, excelled at algebra but failed in maths. It’s a way of thinking that most brains are not wired for.

        I’ve been a programmer for over 25 years and yet to meet even a half decent female programmer. Male brains are optimised for spatial awareness. This was needed back in cavemen days when the men needed to go out to hunt and then find their way back. This is why men are better at reading maps than women.
        
        This translates to programming as good programmers have the capacity to build large mental maps of code and navigate, explore these systems in their heads, while female coders just get easily lost.
        
        This is in no way saying that men are better than women. I’m just saying that men are better at programming than women.

        Mrlovebucket. I have to respectfully disagree. My sister is an outstanding SAP programmer, and the team she worked in, were mostly women. I don’t think it’s a simple male-female issue, although engineering never seemed to have an overflow of female students!

      I suspect the problem with coders now is the mathematical orientation of the languages. The programs have a rigor to them and their style can be most unappealing. It started with algol and the aims to have code written by AI. Earlier the verbal cobol was simpler and effective and I know of software houses owned by women. Code is now nerdware. Dbase is still be used and promoted in some countries and it was used by office staff who didn’t have to call in IT experts for reports. Another instance was Ulead’s PhotoImpact, which I understand became the basis of Adobe’s Photoshop. The Ulead version had hidden power but simple form for an office worker: the Adobe product is a toolbox requiring training.
      
      One type of software does not fit all users.

        Moron stephie: It is nothing to do with what genders are “better” than others, it is about treating people as individuals.
        Nowhere have I said that males are inherently better programmers than women. That is ridiculous.
        
        We are all individuals.
        
        However when we group those individuals according to some classification such as gender, race, income levels, whatever we will find that the traits are not equally sprinkled across the various groups.
        
        Just as Chinese people tend to be shorter than Scandinavian people as a group or women being generally weaker than men, we can find that women when treated as a group are not going to be as good at programming.
        
        Just as you can find individual counter-examples (a tall Chinese person, a short Scandinavian person, a weak man, Valerie Adams,…), you will find there are some very good female programmers and some very poor male programmers.

New app to help people get drivers licences. Proudly proclaimed In Te Reo Maori, then in smaller print (and some other languages). Now if it was in Chinese, I am all for it as they’re the ones needing the most help here having grown up with a different alphabet to us. But if you have the educational skills to learn Te Reo, after living in a country all your life that speaks English as a first language, I don’t think you need a fucking app in Maori to help you get your licence. More virtue signalling to appease the natives.

Hammered by Pakistan in the 20/20, more importantly ground into Hagley Oval by Afghanistan in the U19 tournament.
That Afghan team could probably have beaten the Blackcaps yesterday. Our boys looked woeful in both games.

We gave waged staff their annual increase at the start of the week. A couple of concerned staff came to my office and said it wasn’t enough. Their concerns were that as low $20’s per hour earners that soon new staff would be earning more or less the same as them even on new min wage. Through gritted teeth I said don’t worry guys we will be lifting your rates to ensure relativity based on your experience. In other words the entire business will need to increase ALL wages by at least 28% if not more over the next couple of years to ensure relativity. By all means increase min wages at a higher rate but assess it each year in a sustainable manner.
Thanks COL you really have no clues about how business works. Yes that’s right Winston we are the ones trying to provide and create new employment!

  Come on they are not all as productive as each other, you don’t have to give staff the exact same rise as each other, and besides you can give them a monthly bonus instead, based upon as many factors as you see fit; revenue, attendance, individual effort……the best carrot for the lower paid, monthly. Do it yearly and they will slack off until around the time of the annual pay rise.
  
  Install the capitalist mindset into your staff instead of NZ’s socialist mindset…….tiers within a business is not a class! Remain competitive.

      No that’s wrong as unions can only get them the minimum wage and conditions, anything above that is your decision. Pay the better workers a bit more and create division within the union members, where some will then become disgruntled and find themselves being given notice until fired, as they should be.

        Or if management don’t want to confront poor performance then they should probably leave. Why should responsible and compliant people in the business have to put up with poor performance of any sort from anyone?
        You sound like typical NZ management that operates within parameters that are far to broad. An interesting immigration situation in Otago.

A South African family, the von Metzingers, are being deported because of a pre-existing kidney condition of one of the family’s two sons.

Meanwhile the Amarasinghe family, from Sri Lanka, with three sons, and whose mother has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, have been granted a temporary permit to stay.

NZ First list MP Mark Patterson and National Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker have been involved in the battle to keep the Amarasinghes in NZ.

    The Dreamers in America are for the most part American educated as they have been there for most of their lives. Given that the majority of illegals reside in California, this won’t much of a difference to the electoral college vote. In fact it could push more Hispanics to vote for Trump because most Mexicans residing in America despise illegals themselves.
    I see it as win/win for Trump because it then puts the onus on Dems to either, a> agree to this and support Trump, or b> refuse to sign it and leave 1.8 million American educated people with no legal status with the blame laying directly at the Dems feet.
    It also shores up some other inconsistencies such as the ballot system, and the chain green card problem from shithole countries.

Personally I think it is a great idea, it gets rid of the Dreamer problem, legitimizes almost 2 million illegals that are currently hidden in so called Sanctuary Cities and ensures all future arrivals to America come by the correct channels. Tourism is a major success, our economy we are told is booming, so if not now when? IMO there should already be funding in place.

Christchurch water is crap or at least it is suspected to be polluted by it. A number of water bores are believed to be contaminated.

As a result the good people will be saved from gut problems by a good dose of fluoride for the next 12 months or more.

Just north of Christchurch – 15 mts drive is the sleepy suburb call Belfast. A Chinese firm has been permitted to suck unlimited amounts of pure water out of a bore – I understand for free – and bottle it.

      I don’t think that the chlorination status of Penny’s water is the major problem faced at BO Central stigie.
      
      It’s more to do with it taking 10 minutes for the cistern to recover after a flush & having to run around under the shower head to get wet. 🙂

The Dow is marching towards 27000 – up almost 50% since the ‘devil incarnate’ took office. In the meantime the NZX has languished since 24 September and remains stubbornly around 8,000. Today there was some more selling off of our blue chip stocks from Asia which is always a worry as it’s an indicator of the lack of offshore confidence in our economy. Coming on top of the 43% fall in business confidence in yesterdays ANZ survey we seem to have increasing concerns in our fundamentals.

Question Time starts on Tuesday and I think we deserve some answers. Get to it Bill and nail them because the national obsession with the pending royal birth does not cut it with international investors.

  Bugger them Maggie. There’s a large chunk of astronomers who are funded by governments and arms corporates intent on launching far more lethal objects into orbit than a glittering Disco Ball.
