Yesterday DPF shared an article saying that “inflation” has “only” been 1.6% for the past year.

Aside from the fact that this easily manipulatable statistic is only believable if you eat cars, live in a fridge, connect to the power grid illegally and “do a Penny” and refuse to pay rates….pretty much no MSM outlet or political commentator except Croaking Casandra will point out what inflation really is – an increase in the money supply.

Inflation is not the prices of items increasing….. it is the value of the money you earn being diluted by an increase in the money supply.

The value of goods do change relative to other goods, but what is really happening is that the unit of measure (the NZ Dollar) is constantly being diluted.

Simple and important point, yet so seldom discussed by the assorted talking heads…….

  The 1.6% applies to an index of many things that consumers buy, including cars both used and new. Its called the CPI
  
  Thats what increased ‘The index’. Its not the weekly household spending.
  New Cars of course are only a tiny fraction of CPI, and the ‘decrease’ was due to end of year special pricing- like lots of high cost items do around Xmas. And change would have been a smaller amount , maybe a 5% lower overall cost of the tiny amount new cars are of the CPI- used cars take a higher amount.

      I never said that yesterday that DPF posted an article saying that a basket of selected goods went by an average of 1.6% .
      
      DPF said inflation was up 1.6% when real inflation (an increase in the money supply which dilutes all existing units of the currency) was up much, much more.

  The Cost of living (CPI) is a different thing that measures price changes.
  
  Why do economists and news media confuse these two entirely different terms and concepts?

    To most people the changes in the CPI do reflect community spending changes over the basket of goods and services the CPI covers.
    
    If M3 measures inflation then how about the massive credit creation of the central banks that has fed into asset price inflation worldwide.

  Yes I’ve been beating the drum about what’s happening in the USA for some time now. In short the US economy is booming. This is due to tax cuts, massive deregulation , freeing up the energy sector and pursuing economic growth . You wont hear this on CNN or our NZ media but Trump is gaining popularity as the ordinary worker sees the difference in their pay packet .
  
  These developments could be instructive for NZ but unfortunately the NZ government appears to be keen to go in exactly the opposite direction. Our government is increasing environmental regulations, embracing identity politics and has no idea about how to pursue economic growth. For example National promised tax cuts. Labour cancelled the tax cuts to focus on giving university students their first year free and paying out over $350 million dollars to Maori interests.
  
  We will never get prosperity with these clowns in office. We need new leaders who are prepared to learn from the American experience and apply those principles here. Then we can all prosper.

    My income isn’t enough to pay my basic cost of my existence, so I have to borrow each month to pay for groceries and travel to and from work. I have taken a pay cut in the hope that this will mean I get paid for enough extra hours to do better than break even with my income before the cut.

      That’s a good point. However the bet is that the increase in economic activity, the businesses relocating back to the USA and the increase in workers wealth will mean that the US government will get plenty of new tax revenue.
      
      However those who believe that the USA and other Western countries, like NZ, spend far too much on benefits and entitlements and need to cut their spending will get no argument from me.

      That’s because the American Government have absolutely no clue what “basic” means and have not had a clue for many administrations.
      
      Through the Obama years they borrowed an average of $1T per year and injected that into the economy. With the trickle-down effects thats like buying everyone a new car once a year.
      
      Basically partying on their national credit card with no thought to how they will pay it back when they sober up.
      
      If people consider that “normal” and “basic” then they will feel a bit of hurt when that runs out and they have to start living within their means.
      
      It is really too early to say what the Trump years will look like, but if they don’t find a way to cut back they’re just making the problem even worse for future generations.

    I admire Trump for what he’s doing for the US culture. It may well be that debt expansionism is necessary for a first term to purchase enough goodwill to mitigate the deep corruption and erosion of America under Obama and dem state governments.
    
    However, eventually, they have to start funding their liabilities. That means cutting spending.
    
    What I hope he does is use the sanctuary cities’ brazen contempt for the law of the land to simply arrest their administrations before they spread the death of Chicago and Illinois.
    
    The unfunded liability pension bomb is coming. He will have to cut spending eventually.

    PS.National should have set the tax cut to commence sooner with the sweet spot of 1 Oct 2017.
    This would have been more visible to voters for Labour to reverse this as its first act when people had already had direct benefit.
    At the time Nats were facing A Little opposition and the opposition were facing oblivion.
    
    The media have a HUGE investment in the outcome of NZ economy in 2018.
    Media are a major part of the problem.
    Labour know this symbiotic relationship and the media will be artificially buoyed with taxpayer money (new TV station in a dying era) and lots of Women’s weekly type stories cover to cover.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern responds to negative baby comments;

“It’s up to me to prove that I am able to continue to fulfil the responsibility I have and the mandate I have.”

She absolutely does not have a mandate to be both Prime Minister and start a family at the same time. If she had revealed her intentions to NZ voters during the election she would be able to claim this. But instead she chose to keep this highly significant information secret. Even when directly asked she avoided the question. She selfishly put her own life goals ahead of the rights of NZ voters.

As to her brazenly shrugging off criticism about handling the workload… what breathtaking arrogance. She has barely been PM for a few months (and most of that during parliamentary recess), so she doesn’t yet have a firm idea how much work the role entails. Likewise she has not yet been a mother, so she doesn’t know what’s involved there. To so casually assume she’ll be able to handle both is over-confident to the point of stupidity. There is a very high chance she will be overwhelmed and end up doing a half-arse job in one or both roles.

And again, voters deserved to decide for themselves whether they thought one person could handle both responsibilities. Ardern denied them that choice.

        There aren’t many mothers who outsource to such a high degree in the first five years. In any case, it seriously taints the narrative. Missing out on your first – and perhaps only – child’s first few years as a mother?
        
        Very aristocratic, very ‘child as accessory’ but for someone who really wants a child and then essentially leaves them for a political job…..well, that isn’t a story that is quite as glowing as the one that is being created.

    Genuine questions ztev – how many hours a week do you think Prime Ministers work? How many hours a week do you think Jacinda Ardern will be able to spend with her child (excluding weeks where she is overseas on official engagements, of course)?
    
    But regardless, the last sentence of my post still stands. You clearly believe Ardern will be able to do both roles. I disagree. And every New Zealand voter had the right to consider this question for themselves. Ardern had absolutely no right to make this decision for all of us.

        First child at age 19, last at 67. I have had 8 of my own including one full term stillborn and have two stepsons who are virtually adopted. One death from accidental OD of morphine.
        Another of the boys survived drugs, prison and has become an internationally recognised specialist valuer. The three youngest 11, 13 16, are thriving. Possibly two engineers and musical theatre performer. Who knows? That’s the fun of the future.
        Parenting is about developing responsible adults fit for purpose in the world. The 16 yr old daughter has recently got a permanent part time job at adult rates as shop assistant and tailoring trainee. She had previously done a course in pattern making. She’s back to College shortly with plans to produce a play. She has chronic pain but is unstoppable.
        
        Parenting is facing what comes next.

      Same as if a single Maori MP had retained/won a Maori seat and the National/Maori/ACT Government had continued for 3 more years.

    Then in the limited time she spent in the roll before the Christmas break the humour continued as she proved the majority right by her ineptitude and incompetence.
    Now the country is again laughing as she claims that even with a bun in the oven she will be up to the dual role of mother and Prime Minister.

      When you’re the PM unfortunately it’s not just ‘their private business’. If it’s just ‘their private business’ then I would expect their answers to the media to be all to that effect. I would also expect no stories about it in the magazines. If it’s just ‘their private business’ then I would also expect no political point scoring media attention around the pregnancy and raising of the baby.

  Kept what a secret? As I understand it, she didn’t know she was pregnant until after the election, and was under the impression that she was going to require medical assistance in order to conceive. Should she have given the public a full rundown of her medical situation as she was campaigning? We don’t expect that of other politicians – for all I know, “X” has high blood pressure and cholesterol issues and is at risk of a heart attack. Perhaps all male and female MPs over 60 should be required to have mammograms or prostate examines so we are sure that they are less likely to get waylaid by cancer during the next 3 years (which does happen). Lots of things, health and personal, can happen to our elected representatives – having a baby is one of the more positive ones.

    I have heard Ardern’s claim she was told she was unlikely to get pregnant without intervention. To be completely blunt, I don’t believe her. It’s simply too incredibly convenient. And even if it were true, that doesn’t explain why she dodged the question on the matter. She wouldn’t have needed to go into detail, just a non-commital “no immediate plans”, or “can’t rule it out” would have been more honest. Instead she chose a response that both avoided answering and shut down future questions on the matter as thoroughly as possible.

      Of course they were.To conceive a baby you have to stop taking contraceptives.
      Which is a conscious and planned decision.
      My Bro the Gynecoligist reckons it takes 3-6 months for most to conceive. And that’s if all is well. If there are problems, and talking about artificial means suggests there are, then they may have been trying a lot longer.

  She become the leader of the second biggest political party in the country, run an election campaign that requires long days, stressful interviews and huge amounts of travel AND successfully out-negotiating the sitting Prime Minister to become one of the youngest leader of a country in the world – all at the same time as getting pregnant and going through the early stages of pregnancy.

  Beautifully said UpandComer, you’ve just smashed another deluded piece of wishful thinking from Fairfax’s embedded Labour spindoctor Tracy Watkins.
  
  Her article is as deluded as her last one a couple of days ago where she totally ignored the big story of the C&P TPP agreement which was Labour flip-flopping on supporting the agreement (when Labour were against it for years, would only allow Phil Goff to previous vote in its favor and MP’s including our PM-Select were protesting against it).
  
  Watkins swept this all under the carpet in an attempt to rewrite history claiming Labour were the victors and National were the losers – FFS!
  
  Today she continues this narrative and what she misses again is the obvious, which is, National simply need to play the ball not the man in terms of Arderns pregnancy – Ardern’s political competence will continue to be lacking and mistakes will continue to be made, National will focus on those (i.e. nothing to do with baby related matters).
  
  Watkins thinks that National have a hard road to sell to win in 2020 – nonsense Labour’s victory was due to NZF and that support will decline (has declined according to polls). With Winston’s excessive baubles exceeding some of his supporters tolerance (eg Nat deflectors) will see Winston dethroned spectacularly (as he was in Northland), the question then becomes do some factions of NZF align with National (or cling to the sinking NZF/Labour ship)?
  
  Labour’s Maori Seat MP’s need to deliver, except sometimes the Labour Party needs to tone Maori aspirations down (so expect the usual focus on the basics eg unemployment etc), and frankly they have become invisible again. Expect to see a resurgent Maori Party show up Labour (after all Maori Party still has media “mana” both MSM and Maori media – they will get headlines and eat into Labour’s support).
  
  Labour and NZF + Greens is not a stable platform – expect to see tensions as the political year is fully underway.
  
  Labour and NZF + Greens have too many idealists and not pragmatists (expect to see Marama Davidson elected Greens co-leader “to balance” Shaw’s “middle-class appeal” to cater to their activist base). This might suit the Greens personally but will further weaken the COL’s grip on middle-NZ.
  
  Could go on, but in conclusion despite Tracy Watkins idealistic delusions (expect to see more and more similar articles, after all she has been promoting “Jacindamania” since the PM-Select was elevated to the top), National are experienced, battle proven and ready, and united. Labour has been under pressure since their infamous “day 1”, the next few months will be interesting and I find it unlikely the COL will be as “stable” in 1 years time as it is now, which is still their honeymoon period in terms of implementing policy and public awareness. He was telling me he told his wife yesterday morning specifically not to have any more than 19 employees on the books at any time. They currently have 18. The 90day trial has become too important as a safeguard for him. You can’t tell how well people perform under pressure from an interview and a couple of crooked references. Try telling that to the Union Party of NZ that has the backing of one third of the country though

Mind you that is just the lower floor clad with stone. upper floor clad in timber is stinking hot. I never particularly ‘noticed’ the warming effect but the coolness is pronounced.

  I was talking to someone who grew up in SA where it gets much hotter but he didnt like the cold chill of the home aircon as it isnt so hot hot here.
  I suggested the dehumid function as that works on the real problem in NZ . High humidity. of course its chilling only slightly so doesnt have a ‘cold blast’ effect.
  I have the dehumid on all night in the bedroom, barely uses any power.

  It is still couple of degrees short of Feb 1973 and a great summer that was.
  The following year was the Commonwealth games in ChCh and top daily temperatures were about a nice 25 deg Celsius.
  It went back to normal.
  
  1998 was exceptionally hot but the following year not so much. 2003 was the next decent summer in NZ.
  
  It is exceptionally cold in the northern hemisphere of our planet and has been for the last month.
  Perhaps the media need to be given more time to study maths like the women at Oxford University and they might understand Bell curves, standard deviation, and outlier highs and lows.
  I guess they can pass the deviant part but struggle with numbery things.
  
  Perhaps if Golriz had more time when she was AT OXFORD she might understand about truth telling. Then again, like our media, no matter how much time you give them TRUTH is not a common bedfellow.

I think Air NZ has made life difficult for itself with the pricing blunder resulting in hundreds booking flights at 10% or so of the intended price. In fairness to Air NZ, it just could not bear the massive potential loss nor the loss of business from those who would have booked the seats at the intended price in the course of time. Presumably a head will roll and its systems altered to ‘challenge’ staff who try to enter a ridiculously low or high selling price.
As well as disappointed customers, travel agents have to bear the brunt of this too both in appeasing customers and using their ‘clout’ to cancel consequential bookings for hotels etc which are often non-refundable.
I thought this was Air NZ, not Jetstar nor Ryanair (or even United) etc. With this, I have lost some faith with Air NZ. Air NZ have helped out on two occasions for which I was grateful and because of this have a strong bias to fly Air NZ. My loyalty had now been stretched and I will look closer at other options in the future.

We are told that one plastic water bottle is equivalent to X number of supermarket bags. Before they touch our useful supermarket bags the greenies should target those wasteful bottles. I have seen people load their trollies with packs of water bottles when they have perfect water on tap at home. In many cases the water bottle people also buy copious amounts of packaged food, and bugger all fresh produce.

    I spoke to an experienced supermarket owner who said the move away from plastic bags was Green driven, and not customer driven. He predicted that reusable shopping bags will be ‘doctored’ by customers so they will have false compartments to secrete expensive items. There is no restriction on what sort of bags customers will use, so watch for the scams beginning. The extra costs of course will be passed onto genuine customers.

      If we are expected to use our own bags, we’ll limit our supermarket shopping to what can comfortably be carried in the two bags we enter the shop with.
      
      We don’t want to carry a heavy load… which is what check-out operators are forced to do when they try and cram all your purchases into your provided bags.
      
      I reckon our supermarket shop will drop substantially… I’ll get all fruit & veg from the Sat. market.. and go to the retail butcher now for meat.

        I’m surprised, Maggy, that a lady of your good taste would ever purchase fresh meat, fruit or vegetables from a supermarket. Most cities, towns and decent suburbs have good specialist retailers of those products – the latter are worth the trouble of a separate visit just to avoid the supermarkets’ ageing produce that the vendors themselves seek to conceal with plastic pre-packaging.
        
        We’ll all be better-off, at least in quality, if we don’t submit to the monopoly / duopoly aims of the two major supermarket chains. Help keep the small, independent, fresh-food retailers in business!

        I’m not a bloody posh trendy with a big 4wd who rolls up to Moore-Wilson to locate a leaf of Cos lettuce and a sliver of pule.
        
        In my working gal days, I was so damn appreciative of the Island Bay NW supermarket just a couple of blocks walk from my home. I’ve been managing households since I was 10 and I know damn well how to feed a family on the basics….carrots, swedes and spuds with some silverbeet from the garden.. is variety enough.
        
        After a day’s work and by the time I’d picked up my kid(s)..I didn’t have time to go searching for delicacies.
        We did one major shop in the weekend… as the time arrived that the girls were into “hygiene/beauty/health” products, I made sure they weren’t spending at the expensive outlets.
        
        It’s fun shopping with the chef daughter nowadays… even tho’ she works at the classiest joints on the planet, she’s still happy to locate bargains in the “passed-by-best-date” bins.

I know that some tertiary institutions track how many of their graduates obtain employment after graduating. With the uptake in tertiary education with “first year free”, how will the NZ public be able to judge how effective Labour’s policies have been? Especially if there is no legal obligation to make the information public (imagine if the percentages take a dive, will the universities still release the data showing that their performance has dropped?)

Any ideas? Does the government track any metrics that indicate how effective tertiary education is? Should it?

To those on here who keep on about babies being illegitimate and bastards, what does this actually mean to you in practical terms?
Babies are little people who will grow up to be big people.
When a child, born to a couple who are not legally married, turns 10 or 20 or 30, are you still going to be obsessing about them being illegitimate?
Judge the parents if you must, but don’t judge the child. They are not to blame if their parents are not married. Name calling is not going to help.

Megan Kelly formerly of Fox and now CBS is in a shit fight with her.

Fonda is hated by pilots who were prisoners in the VC Camps. She visited them at the prisons and was photographed sitting on an anti air craft gun that would have shot some down.

There an account backed by witnesses that during a meeting with prisoners one of them quietly passed a letter to Fonda. She quickly handed this to one of the guards and walked out. The prisoner was badly beaten for this.

I know a couple of retired USAF pilots who still intensely hate her.

My g/f did 2 years at one and got Business admin levels 3 and 4.
Now she wants to get a job.

She saw the Polytech (Te Ohomai!) advertising for a customer service person. Great ! But they want 3 years experience!

Come on!
Its customer service, answering the phone etc.
Its not a full time accountants job, or a brain surgeon.

That seems very unfair to me. How are students expected to get 3 years experience?

You would think they would give preference to students who went through their own courses!

Spare a thought for Cape Town and their looming water crisis.

They’re on track for water to being cut off to 4 million people. The “solution” is to provide 200 watering points throughout the city where people can come collect a maximum of 25 litres of water.

That’s 20,000 people served by each watering point every day – an average of around 3 seconds per person. Of course each watering point will have many taps, but that’s still quite a mission…

While there will be armed guards at the watering points, there will not be armed escourts taking people to and from the watering points. Car hijackings, armed robbery and home invasions for the purpose of water theft will likely escalate.

Some people are installing watering tanks and catching occasional water from their roof. Of course you only really own what you can defend. The bloke with the gun owns everything.

South Africa is a powder keg waiting for a spark and this water crisis could just be it.

I hope I’m wrong, but you can’t drink hope.

    Cape Town was never really part of Africa until the late 1990s.
    
    That might sound weired, but Black Africans never actually got that far in their migration south.
    
    Sure, there were the original people of Southern Africa – the Khoi San – in the area for maybe 120k years, but the Nguni (Black African) stopped migrating south when their staple crops stopped growing. Hence lots of Zulu and Xhosa people in the Zululand/Transkei areas, but not further south.
    
    Thus the Cape Town area was never part of “Black Africa”, giving it a very Cosmopolitan European/Western/Malayan air – more so probably than any other city in Africa.
    
    It was only in the 1980s that significant numbers of Xhosa people moved to Cape Town for economic opportunities not available in the traditional Xhosa areas (Transkei etc).
    
    Even now, Cape Town is the only city in Sub-Saharan Africa which is not predominantly black: probably 40% or so.
    
    When that light gets snuffed out, Sub-Saharan Africa will have truly become Africa from end to end.

        Since Kassinga is not in South Africa and the Angolan war was completely unrelated to South African political violence, it is a bit disingenuous to include that.
        
        However your main point is solid. The supposed South African “freedom fighters” were the ANC and their armed wing Mkonto We Sizwe.
        
        A true “freedom fighter” would be fighting against the regime (ie. the Apartheid government, even maybe white civilians). But they were not. They killed only a handful of government forces and white civilians.
        
        They were killing masses of black civilians though, in a power struggle for who would take over when the inevitable happened – black majority rule.
        
        In this the ANC were ruthless and killed thousands, often using techniques such as necklacing or firing AK47s at funeral entourages.
        
        Much of the South African Army forces were deployed in peace keeping in townships to try to curb the worst of these excesses. Without that, the deaths would have been a lot higher.
        
        Yes, I am fully aware there were many nasty incidents caused by SA Army troops going off-script in the townships, but on the whole they were a huge plus in the life of the average black person.
        
        21,000 is about 14 month’s worth of murders at the current South African murder rate – so much safer back then.
        
        When Cape Town’s water runs out we can expect the Cape Town’s 50-60/100,000 murder rate to double or more.
        
        I hope I am entirely wrong on that point.

        WE have a farmer here in his late eighties here, an Aussie who went to Zimbabwe, built a huge holding, employed and supported 400 families, he lost the farm, they lost their incomes and jobs.
        He still keeps in contact with some, he cried when he went back and saw the transformation.

        Quite a few African governments (including Nigeria and Mozambique) are encouraging white farmers from South Africa to settle there because they understand the need for proper management in the agricultural industry.
        
        Zimbabwe is not ready for that yet. They still want to appropriate the farms. That has been a disaster and now they want the white farmers back to rebuild what has been broken in the hopes that they can take it away again.
        
        Only a complete idiot would go back to Zimbabwe now. There is no way they are ready for it yet.

    Also be thankful you live in a nice country that is essentially free of corruption and for whom issues like running out of water is just an academic issue.       SA is bloody scary. It is the only place I have been where I had to be escorted to a restaurant in the evening by an armed guard. Guards with rifles sat out side the restaurant and escorted us back to our gated hotel. Ghastly place and that is only two years ago…under black rule.

        A few people in NZ can scrounge up a story about violence and murder etc, but for most people that would be some third hand story that you heard from a bloke in a pub who was told something by his brother.
        
        Every single South African can tell you very personal tales involving either themselves or their families.
        
        * Two kids I played with as a child were done for murder in separate incidents. One was a cop who murdered a suspect, the other shot a shop owner while robbing the shop.
        * In the 1980s and early 1990s I was involved in two incidents involving firearms.
        * My mother has been robbed at gunpoint. Twice.
        * My sister in law has been robbed at gunpoint.
        * My sister, sister in law, brother in law all had home invasions and pretended they were asleep while stuff was stolen out of their houses and theiir vehicles stolen, even out of their kids’ bedrooms.
        * My cousin’s husband was hijacked, had his car stolen, was beaten up and left in a ditch.
        * Three of my mother’s friends have been murdered on their farms in different incidents. The women were raped first. They were old biddies in their late 70s/early 80s.
        
        My sister has security gates INSIDE the house to shut off the bedrooms from the rest of the house.
        
        And when I was a kid we’d leave the doors open at night.

I sat in on a U Canterbury Computer Science class about 6 years ago and was shocked by what I saw.

Students were encouraged to bring computers to class to type in program snippets as the lecturer did them to follow along, but that is not what the majority of the class were doing.

From my vantage point at the back, less than 10% were actually doing stuff related to the class. Another 10% or appeared to be doing their homework, but the majority were screwing around on social media.

One young woman had a laptop + two cell phones – spending the whole lecture facebooking + texting.

Apart from wasting the opportunity, they were also distracting others.

Donald Trump is refusing to visit the UK unless Theresa May can ensure that he is not met with protests.

Bloomberg revealed that Trump complained in a phone call to May about the “negative coverage” he has received in the British press.

May told the US president that that was how the UK media operated and she could do little to change it.

Trump went on to say that he would not visit the UK unless there were guarantees that he would not be met with protests.

Advisers who had been listening to the phone call are reported to have been “astonished” at the demands.
