Something I have been musing on over the holidays: How much do Public Service Anouncments cost and has there ever been any cost/benefit analysis done to show if these are worth while in terms of saving lives of reducing the costs to the country caused by accidents?

Think “The faster you go, the bigger the mess” or the ACC one where the woman trips and falls through her coffee table – there are dozens of them and these would have cost an absolute fortune to produce. Does ACC have to pay to air these?

Some of these ads – the ghost chips one or Taika Waititi’s Blazed ad – have some entertainment value but have these ever been proven to saves lives or reduce injury? I half suspect that this is a government sop to the film and television industry because these ads would keep a lot of writers, camera crews, actors editors etc in employment.

This is without mentioning the print and radio ads and the many, many road signs (also not cheap) dotted around the country. Could this money be better spent on health or emergency services or road improvements?

  Given rising road traffic and normal statistical variance, can the effectiveness of road-safety TV advertising be measured?
  
  If its value can’t be proved, perhaps the money would be better spent on road signage.

        Another useless one is an odd set of signs with pictures that then proclaims “same diff”. I assume it is about equating risk but can rarely make it out. I risk running off the road from staring at it for too long trying.

        When possible is the key. At very busy times will be in the right lane but allow a reasonable distance to the next car. Some clown will ether be up my bumper or go up the inside and jump in the gap and not too long later do the same to someone else.

    This is where my thinking was going although I also doubt the effectiveness of road signage.
    
    It feels like someone in the 1980’s had the bright idea of putting shocking road accident PSAs on TV and while the ads themselves have become slicker and more sophisticated over time, no one has ever bothered to stop and ask if these ads achieve their purpose.

      Inattention and misjudgment never enter the equation because they’re not simple to show in an ad.
      Traffic cops do what they’re told, say what the script tells them to say..
      Cars are safer, roads are getting better, one day soon they’ll remove all the trees and poles from the sides of the road.
      And traffic will be separated to prevent those headons.

  Best described as visual pollution. They are the communication industry’s equivalent of nagging & therefore rightfully ignored by all.

  ACC was one of the organisations that contributed to the University of Otago in Wellington’s rental warrant of fitness. (No traction after several years concentrated lobbying, but that may change with the current government.)
  
  I expect ACC had a say in requirements around handrails (requirements for Africa, at least in Wellington where every second rental has steps and stairs), security stays on upstairs windows to stop littlies falling out, and visbility strips on many doors and windows.
  
  Yes, people run or fall through doors and cost ACC a lot. Don’t have recent figures but in 2010 it was reported that 133 children a week make a claim from running through glass or falling from windows. A week. And just children.
  
  Some of course will live in owner occupied homes but the WoF doesn’t care about them.
  
  I wrote to a previous Minister for ACC suggesting a study comparing the cost of supplying free visibility strips to anyone who asks to the cost of running-through-glass accidents. Cost should include intangible costs, such accidents are painful to say the least. And indirect costs such as parents taking time of work to sit by their child’s hospital bed.

    Of course anyone can just go down to Bunnings or Mitre 10 and get all the tape they need.
    
    Making it into a nanny state program just increases costs dramatically. It’s not just the tape, but then a need for a panphlet and TV andertising on how to stick the tape on the windows. All translated into 15 different languages and a CEO in charge of the program.
    
    $5 of tape soon becomes $20 of overheads.

      I don’t disagree but that would be part of a cost benefit analysis including take up scenarios.
      
      My underlying point is that costs should lie with benefits. As proposed in the rental warrant of fitness the costs lie with the tenant and the benefits lie with ACC and the health system.
      
      The nanny state kicks in if the warrant of fitness in its current form becomes mandatory, which was election policy for 2 out of 3 of coalition partie. If so lack of visibility strips, handrails and window stays become mandatory and the rental will fail.
      
      Seems to me a voluntary scheme could save money all round, not to mention pain and suffering. So why not do the sums.

The better part of my conscience has approved of the gracious sentiments that have been expressed about the death of Jim Anderton. People from across the political spectrum have been dignified, decent and empathetic.

The evil part of me is worried that this sets a dangerous precedent for when Winston finally kicks the bucket!

Am looking at the new legislation concerning rental properties.
Who would be a domestic property landlord ?
The new rules are to say the least onerous in terms of further favouring the renter against the evil landlord.
These are called among other aspects the Healthy Homes 40% or so of rental in New Zealand and many are considered to be of good rental quality requirements.
There are many of the others too.
However the new requirements are overarching covering all properties.
For example rent reviews every 12 months instead of 6 months.
Abolishing letting fees and longer rent review periods.
It is already being muted by landlords and rental agencies that no matter what state a particular property is in a minimum of $50 per week increase is a starter.
There is provision for inflationary pressures associated with insurances, council rates (which are soaring) and of course maintenance.
A landlord may have to have the house vacated before any upgrades can be done – hoe do you do that to the average solo mother with 3/4 children and get the job done in a reasonable time and cost.
Who would be a landlord ?

  Two people have told me casually (provincial South Island) that they are getting out. All seen now as too hard, too many regulations. I’m all for a fair deal, but it seems as if it is going to be much harder to shift unwanted tenants and small-time investors just don’t want the hassle. Watch a shortage develop and rents rise, and I note that wherever I go, I have yet to see a new government house go up – or a bloody tree planted, other than the one I put in myself without Jacinda’s help.

    The more that go the better.
    We have had to many accidental landlords and too many getting in on the price rises.
    That has made it easy for tenants to get houses and not care a shit about the way they treat them.
    I have noticed that the last 2 years has changed the attitudes a lot. genuine people have taken the place of the shit for brains. My tenants are better and som are genuinely grateful for being allowed to stay in my houses. They are all very basic 3 beddies.
    I am in the process of doing upgrades which I can now afford because of stable tenants, lower interest rates and higher rents.
    May even add some more later this year. Have a couple of properties where I can add a house.
    
    Whats not to like about the way things are. I like longterm tenants.

    Six state units were completed seven weeks ago in our neighbourhood on a quarter acre site that previously held one state house. They are very attractive and all set to go with curtains, carpets, landscaped gardens, juliet balconies, garden sheds. Full marks Housing NZ but why are they still empty seven weeks on if we have such a crisis on our hands?

    The Healthy Homes Guarantee Bill No 2 is at the below link. Just waiting for Royal Assent before becoming law. It is short on detail, which is yet to be determined in regs.
    
    Appears to be more coming, and a couple of likely policies will have a significant effect on landlords staying in or exiting the industry. Namely ending no-fault terminations and removing the ability to offset negative net rents.

    Returns will be better in bank deposits than the risks in rentals.

        Dog owners should be licensed at the fee it takes to properly control dogs. That fee could be quite high. Except for guide dogs there is no need for dogs to be subsidized by the tax payer or rate payer.
        
        As for not telling which breeds are dangerous, obviously size matters in an attack. Sure, chihuahuas can be a total pain, but they can’t do you nearly as much harm as a large, aggressive dog.

“In a basement conference room in the Ronald Reagan Center in Washington, D.C., on November 19, 2016, following one of the first alt-right press conferences after the 2016 election, F. Roger Devlin (the “F” stands for Francis) took to the stage with a curious tale about Norwegian women. Their “lizard brains,” he said, were causing them to abandon Norwegian men for Pakistani immigrants, causing a crisis in heterosexual relations among Norwegian whites.

It was familiar territory for Devlin. Devlin is not a household name the way other white nationalist leaders like Richard Spencer are, and he certainly lacks the pomp of some of the far-right’s bombastic hangers-on, such as Milo Yiannopoulos. Yet the self-described “independent scholar” is a major voice on the alt-right, and has been critical in shaping the movement’s understanding of gender, marriage, and the place of white women among its ranks. He is a longtime contributor to far-right publications including The Occidental Quarterly, VDARE, and Counter-Currents. Like many on the intellectual wing of the alt-right, he has mainstream credentials, namely a doctorate in political philosophy from Tulane. But as his work veered right, he began to fancy himself a dissident. In light of the rise in mainstream media attention toward the alt-right movement and women’s role in it, Devlin’s work sheds a great deal of light on a question of what today’s white nationalists think of women’s place in society….”

        A great suggestion Jack. Our daughter works with two middle-aged Iraqi Christians and there is already a small but well established community in Auckland. They have been here since the Saddam era and are so well integrated into the local NZ community as to be invisible. They are above all very proud Kiwis and there lies the difference.       But the best bit is that he isn’t cutting immigration one Pennywise. They are keeping permanent residencies at 45k, highest in the OECD. All they’re doing is cutting our fifth largest exporter market. Because of its possible to find the worst possible triangulation on policy, Ardern and the drunk uncle will find it. Just a warning to anyone using Win 7 on an older laptop or desktop PC – Microsoft (bless them) have released a security update (KB4056894) rollup on 4/1/18 which will kill any computer with an AMD processor. If you allow this to install, at reboot there will be a BSD, or possibly just no start at all.

If you have a restore point, it can be fixed by restoring back with the startup fix software, or by searching Google for fixes to the KB stuffup on- line. Then hide the offending update until they make some amendments, so it doesn’t install automatically. The update is about 137Mb in size if this helps to identify they culprit.

It killed my old laptop that I use for TV streaming at night when I updated at about 8pm last night.

  MX linux
  The Mate desktop is fast and easy to work with.

I see Winston has decided that it is time to have another go at getting his core base of voters back by starting a process of taking funding from iwi organizations and replacing them with Pan Maori to distribute the funds well that’s the way I read it being a dumb pakiha. But no doubt he has backed in people’s hate of giving funds to iwi and decided that People will flock back to his Party with his honest way of most liking trying to deceive the public in by cracking down on how funds are delivered. How will Willie Jackson and the Maori Caucus of Labour take Winstons new way of financing Maori.

Australia really do their infrastructure well. Hours of delays on their busiest train line because of a couple of lightening strikes and about 0.1% of the workforce being sick.

It’s systemic too. Will be like this for months. Lol the unions will be ready to help.

      But what I will state is that I’m a social liberal, bordering on libertarian with a touch of anarchist. That is I consider the state (read us collectively) has no business in imposing moral standards, religious belief or censuring those who don’t follow the norm.
      
      We get one life & it should be ours to live. Advocating a hive mentality is an insult to humans & humanity.

As an over thinker myself, I do not think that I would think what some of these people do. I can’t think of the song but I think that it is Michael Jackson’s black or white where in the video people morph from one thing to another, colour, gender, age etc. Some people are too sensitive, aren’t they?

Or do I just not get it from my ‘privileged’ stance?

This has happened many times.

The thing I don’t understand (and i assume it would be the same in this case), that bullies often rejoice when their victim commits suicide.

How can people be happy when their actions make someone commit suicide???

If i said nasty things to someone who went on to kill themselves, i’d feel terrible.
