Right of way is Way of Right

A ‘Cri de cour’ today!

A young man took his own life yesterday.

Who he was, and where he was is not something I am able to share, but it happened within 150 meters of where I am sitting and typing now.

It has affected our small community greatly, and those of us with experience in things like this, and there are many of us who have, are on tenterhooks, looking at everyone around us for signs that someone else who is struggling may now see this as a viable option as well. While we are doing this, friends and family are dealing with their own grief, and we are trying to support everyone as best as we can.

It saddens me greatly that we have built up this culture of masculinity over generations, boys don’t cry, don’t be a sook, don’t be a wimp. For many of us men, life is HARD. On one side, we are told that we have to be tough, we have to be strong, yet we also have to be in touch with our feelings, to be kind and nurturing. We’re told to spend time with our children, but how many of us have been out playing with our children or grandchildren and felt as though we are being watched and silently judged. We are asked to help with the raising of our children, yet in in this world, some men have been driven out of public baby change facilities because apparently they are for women only!

While equality for women is still some way off, it is an honourable and necessary goal. I embrace the ideals that it espouses. I just wish that equality between the sexes went both ways sometimes.

Women only gyms are fine, men only barbers are evil.

A strong woman working in a male dominated field is applauded. We now have more female lawyers in New Zealand than male, but a man who wants to work in early childhood education or in a primary school is ‘dodgy’

A female doctor no longer draws comment. A male nurse is a lampoonable concept, have you seen “Meet the Parents?”

A woman can be anything she wants to be! So can a man, to be honest, but some men still feel they must sacrifice a part of their ‘masculinity’ to be something other than what they are.

Sometimes, that masculine self image can stop a man reaching out for help when they really need to. I’m glad that when that moment happened to me that I was able to reach out for help. I found it, it made me stronger, no less masculine, it just redefined what being a man was. I did get some sideways glances, some strange encounters, but I also found my real friends! I know I will never be in that position again. Life is great!

I wish I could have told this young man all of this, but he’s gone, and it’s quite possible that another young man will take his life today as well, another sacrifice to the great cult of masculinity.

  You have touched on an issue permeating Western society which we are paying a huge price for.
  Masculinity, more specifically the positive aspects of masculine traits, have been undermined and framed in a negative narrative led in part by radical feminism, aided and abetted by political correctness and a move away from traditional parenting methods. Is it any wonder our young men are raised in a society that points them toward crisis of identity?
  Our appalling suicide rates bear testament to this yet where are the howls of outrage?
  Give boys what they need; allow rough play, encourage risk taking activity, positive role models and most importantly, give them responsibility.

  You see it could be a large number of things other than our so called “ wicked”feminist or cultural marxist society ?

    I know why he took his own life, and it is not a subject for public discussion. What I do not know is why he didn’t reach out for help.
    
    I didn’t mention anything at all about feminism, or cultural Marxism. I talked about masculinity and how we define it. How the hell does a response like yours help in a situation like this?

      A complex problem that defies simple solutions . However more background information is needed on the personal circumstances of the suicide to provide possible solutions .

        Are you really saying that every suicide must be addressed as an individual issue? Using that logic, then no suicide is preventable as each one is an individual expression of circumstances. That’s a flawed premise.
        
        In any case, it’s not about what drives a person to suicide, those reasons are many and varied. We need to identify how we encourage those people in dark places to reach for the light again.
        
        When someone is at the end of a rope, you don’t ask them how they got there, you pull them up!
        
        I’m trying to tell them that the light is here! Why do you want to find out why they are heading in to darkness before they are allowed to reach for the light again?

        I believe you’ve hit on a key point.
        
        54 years ago when my mother shot herself, suicide was a hush-hush topic. It was a shameful thing to tell others that such a catastrophe had befallen your family. Even years later people leapt to foolish conclusions… someone must have been to blame for /caused her to suicide.
        
        What is changing, is that our society is waking up to the fact that suicide is not a rare event. Few of us have been untouched by a suicide or suicide attempts by a family member, a friend or an acquaintance.
        
        For those of us that have been through a dark passage or walked with those in the depths of despair, we know that the sun will shine again, we know that we will make mistakes in life, stumble and fall.
        
        Years back, our heroes never spoke of their failures, their vulnerabilities or their despair. I think guys like John Kirwan and Mike King are on the right track by talking about depression and feelings of hopelessness.

      A man will not reach out for help for several reasons, including:
      – He believes that there is nobody he can ask for help.
      – He believes that his life is worth less than the trouble he will cause by asking for help (to take the Japanese line).
      – He does not trust the people who could help him.
      – He believes that to ask for help would mean a loss of face.
      
      Today’s society acts as if there is nothing more worthless than the life of a young man.

  Very, very sad and a terrible loss.
  I feel we need to show more compassion to each other.
  About ten years ago a young man jumped off the roof of my sister’s high rise building.
  I was horrified when I heard that a woman who lived there saw him sitting there for hours, thought “he might be going to do that”, but did nothing.
  Sometimes just a kind word or smile is all that somebody needs to bring them back from the edge.

  Sad Right but while old values and attitudes might have played a roll there is a whole new world along with a new set of perimeters the young people have to battle today. We might suspect it is very unlikely there would be too many seeing or commenting on KB so we can not see it as they see it.
  While much is now attributed to the fragile or flawed mental state of many it is also the social influences and platforms that are as big a danger. Sadly it is too late if they get so desperate to go that far before anybody near and dear gets any indication they are so deeply down. The best an untrained family member can do is a form of diversion from this path to generate an alternative path and purpose before the point of no return is reached. While many see life as a beach we soon learn to avoid the rips and hidden perils so paddle along in the shallows.
  Like having to gain the demands of parenthood it is greater challenge to go further than puberty to help with the challenging barriers of living for some.

It seems you wasted your time standing outside in the rain with your toothbrush all week. Sorry.

All these apologies start to make me sound like David Cunliffe.

Anyway they decided to go with the Ukrainian taxi driver for new supreme leader of our galaxy. The decision is made way above my grade and I only found out about that 5 minutes ago. Sorry.

Perhaps I should have told you that the people of our galaxy revere the clitoris.

You know how many cultures can be summed up with two words? Australia: Fosters and kangaroos; UK: rain and whinging; New Zealand: rugby and pies; France: snails and surrendering.
Well my galaxy is karaoke and clitoris. Now personally I don’t like karaoke, but I’ll go for a double serve of clit. Anyway I digress…

They were very concern that you seem keen on using a rusty razor blades in the female genital department. Apparently that counted against you quite a lot. I tried to tell them your dental hygiene made up for it, but that was not enough.

You can see their point. Imagine Labour trying to get into power if Jacinda said she would ban pies. She wouldn’t even get that past Robbo – let alone the whole population.

Also the taxi driver’s karaoke is bloody good even though this really hot chick in the wetwork team managed to French kiss him and give him a bad cold. Even I clapped and I’m about the only person in our galaxy that hates karaoke.

The inspection team with the coffee cups did say they were impressed by your toothbrush, so that’s something, but unfortunately not enough on its own.

I still think you have great potential, so I will see if I can find you some other position in galaxy command and maybe you can work up from there to supreme leader. Perhaps we can start you off running a minor planet. That would be a temporary waste of your talents, but I’m sure you would get promoted quickly.

        There’s no point beating around the bush, it’s not a case of whether someone is funny or not, it’s a case of whether each of the folk of KB judge the personality to have the right politics for them.

        Prebble did it for Donna Awatere, why didnt English do it for Barclay – deputy chair of parliaments Justice committee at the time.

        @ztev. The reason we don’t throw them out of parliament and the party is because we need the greens and labour to maintain at least sufficient members to pretend at usefulness.         Field was dropped from the ministry early on and a QC was asked to conduct an inquiry.
        
        English and Key used government money to pay off the person Barclay was recording, to keep it all quiet.
        He had admitted his crime and yet nothing happened at all. ( ‘do you want to listen to it’)
        
        Field always denied his wrong doing but was expelled from labour when he said he would set up his ‘own party’
        Eventually Field was convicted, Barclay was selected as candidate again before the stink forced him out’.
        A police Superintendent, strangely made the decision to let Barclay off the hook. Unusual to be involved in a minor matter like this but there was a bump in the police budget that year after a long freeze, so assume……

  Before judging further one would need to know more about what the ‘cruel practices’ were and to what extent the directors were directly involved in the ‘cruel practices’. Also where the practices were active or through neglect. Reading between the lines of the Stuff article the practices were widespread and occurred over time, but were not serious enough as to require an immediate response from the authorities. Until more is known (the prosecution has yet to release the whole dossier to the defence) it is difficult to pre-judge the case. The directors may have believed that the practices (whatever they were) were acceptable. It may be that the practices are on a par with tail docking and the prosecution is a test case on the acceptability of the practice.
  It is rather premature to pass any moral judgment until more is known. A shareholder would not in general be liable for the acts or omissions of a company, but depending on circumstances may have some ‘moral’ responsibility. In this instance the MP may not have turned her mind to the activities of the dairying company involved and was probably unaware of the issues and therefore should not be judged on this at this stage.
  Interesting shareholder responsibilities have been a bit in the spotlight with Fletcher Building. Significant shareholders in a company (and the MP is a significant shareholder in the dairying operation) could be expected in some cases to question the activities of companies they have shares in. This is because they can have access to the Chair, CEO etc which small shareholders generally do not (except over a cup of tea after a company AGM). With Fletcher Building, the NZ Shareholders Association raised questions about Fletcher Building’s governance and management in the hope the significant shareholders could use their clout to seek change.

  Trump on the latest school shooting is actually very good. He is talking about doing away with bump stocks, a device on the semiautomatic weapon that makes it shoot faster and more like a machine gun. He is pushing Congress to do something about this.
  
  He is also talking about raising the age for buying a rifle to 21. This move does not please the NRA but actually is something that could make a difference.
  
  Lastly he is also talking about having a few teachers that are armed in each school. These would-be teachers with training and practice in weaponry. He thinks this would stop these type of shooting straight away. I tend to agree with him because having a gun free zone means that only criminals have guns in that zone. A few armed teachers prepared to respond to a shooter would solve the problem in my opinion.

The Virginia Tech situation which you linked to seems to show a very resourceful and calculating perpetrator who thought through with great thoroughness how to get time to kill as many people as possible. The local Virginia Tech police took 3 minutes to get there.
        As they say when seconds count the police are only minutes away.
        
        That’s why I would suggest that the only solution that would work is for some teachers to be armed. No one would know who the armed teachers were. In the Virginia Tech case the perpetrator could not know who in the faculty was armed? Therefore he would know that there is a strong possibility of an armed response to his actions. In my opinion the possibility of an armed response is the greatest deterrent possible to these school shootings.
        
        I think it is worth a try and I believe that some of the teachers being armed would be an effective deterrent to some if not all of these prospective school shooters.

      Thanks for your repliy stephieboy. For us in New Zealand the problem seems so obvious. Why don’t the Americans just hand in all their guns?
      But the big difference between us and Australia and the attitudes of the United States people towards guns is huge. The Americans really believe that they need to have guns as a defence against tyranny. This dates back to the Americans overthrowing British rule. They really believe they have a right to their guns and they need their guns in case of a tyrannical overbearing government.
      
      They really really believe this. Therefore a government that wanted to take away the guns from American gun owners would not survive. An order to forcibly confiscate American guns would be met with armed resistance. There would literally be a civil war.
      
      Therefore American guns are here to stay. Therefore the commonsense solutions that Trump and others are proposing are the only things that can really make a difference. Confiscating guns from American gun owners is just not realistic.

A2 milk

About 6 or 7 years ago I was supplying packaging to a little outfit in Hamilton called A2 Milk. I found out why they existed and did a bit of background research. In Iceland (or somewhere in Scandinavia) they consumed exclusively A2 milk – and although they drank alcohol like the Japanese and smoked like them also, these A2 milk consumers had very little heart trouble.
But I had seen failure after failure in the meat industry with people who had big ideas but they almost always went broke when their dreaming had to give in to reality – they went broke. This didnt make me think great things about A2 milk prospects. Their shares were worth either 7cents or 70 cents – cant remember which. And Fonterra was challenging their patents and other Intellectual property and they were putting out press reports about the fact that there was nothing in this A2 protein stuff. Fonterra would out-spend them I thought.

Next thing the shares were worth $7. OK – too late I thought.

YESTERDAY THEIR SHARES HIT $13 AND THEY ARE NOW WORTH MORE THAN FONTERA. They – the two of them – Fonterra and A2 also announced a joint marketing approach.

This just goes to show the failure that Fonterra is. I think every investment in China has cost them money – and will go on costing more and more.
And it also shows that when Fonterra was challenging the A2 Intellectual Property that Fonterra knew that there was something in it.
This is along side the arrogance that Fonterra has shown about environment effects of the “more Milk” approach they took to increasing their sales. A2 sells about 3% the volume that Fonterra does.

Sure the A2 share price could collapse ( and certainly will have an up and down future for a while) and it could be that Fonterra has entered into this joint programme to actually try and kill this A2 thing (but that would require some deep thinking and the application of some good brain power – two things that I doubt Fonterra has)

The share price of A2 is way over the odds for the companies financial performance – but the support for these new ideas in the investment community is very high. It just goes to show the support Fonterra would get if they actually did something new and intelligent and increased value instead of the crap they come out with on a regular basis.

    I was fortunate enough to buy in at 2.34.
    I am now an extremely wealthy man thanks to Geoffrey and co. They actually went as high as 14.50 yesterday. A2 Milk constantly over perform and now with the Fonterra tie up..the sky is the limit.
    They will be $20 by xmas. If you can grab some around the 12 buck mark you wont look back. Cash reserves of 250 million..nice.

      When he filled me in about the company I bought some at $5.30. A great model.
      I only drink A2 now.It tastes much better.

  Some scientists were employed by our health department to find out why Samoan children brought up in NZ had 10 TIMES the incidence of type 1 diabetes back in Samoa.
  Their conclusion was apparently that it was due to the type of milk we drink here “A1” which contains a mutated protein that causes T1 diabetes plus heart disease etc.
  Good to know the general population is becoming aware of the difference.

They interview some sickly white leftiest academic who said tougher sentences were not the answer, as there was still crime in the USA which has tougher sentences.

They have really tough sentences in China and Iran and there is not much crime there.

  (Fortunately the party that describes gang membership as “an acceptable lifestyle choice” has fallen by the wayside.)
  I once called CYPF about a mum of 11 who was letting a gang pimp out her young daughter, and the social worker assumed I had rung about the sons, who were all into crime in a big way.

  Eleven of the 23 who signed seem to be lecturers in criminology at various NZ universities. Others include lecturers in “indigenous studies”, Moana Jackson, and a few law academics, including one who specialises in restorative justice.
  
  Are the criminologists out to create work for themselves? Therapy and courses instead of imprisonment?
  
  I didn’t see Greg Newbold’s name on the letter, and he would be the country’s leading academic when it comes to prison and justice studies.

It was sickening to see JAG on TV3 this morning watching her squirm when asked about the Iranian’s refusing to shake hands with the female Labour minister. Collins didn’t beat around the bush, “when in NZ you adhere to our customs” full stop! JAG was all..”but we must find a way to respect each others culture and ask them if there is anything else we can do instead of the touching”…FFS, she is supposed to me minister for women and at the fist opportunity bends to the will of the camel jockey’s. I hope this stupid little girl is out on or before 2020 if not we are fucked!

    It’s a custom in NZ for two people who are of a mind to to get married, but Catholic priests are forbidden by their church. I don’t recall too many MPs railing against that dictum.
    There are all sorts of similar rules of minority religions in the country that mainstream MPs never speak out against.
    This is a fuck up by the staff of the Labour MP who didn’t brief her properly about the correct protocols.

  Let’s focus instead on the harm she and Hipkins are intent on doing to our kids and young people:
  – abolition of National Standards (no Standards equals low standards)
  – vindictive attack on Charter Schools (the very opposite of helping kids to succeed)
  – fees-free tertiary give-away (incentivising young people to choose the wrong learning pathway at the wrong level).
  
  I suppose it all has it’s own twisted logic, though. The more kids and young people fail in education, the more likely it is that they will become benefit-dependent vote fodder.

      private sales, trademe etc are way to go. Save $2000 or more from dealer price (more than cost of fixing most mech problems) – and get AA check if you don’t know you way around cars. Stay away from diesels and direct injected Gasoline if possible as that is main source of big maintenance expenses – and in many cases results in writing off of car, turbos are another frequent source of trouble in older cars. Also try and pick something with a timing chain rather than a belt to save expensive replacement. Import Jap is best for cheap maintenance, european cars are too expensive to fix.

But the arts courses now include loads of people who would not have been at university 40 years ago. They have to make the arts courses easier in order to maintain a reasonable pass rate.

      Sorry for the lack of clarity. Golriz’s justification for a man refusing to shake hands with a woman is not necessarily an act of oppression, but to maintain “safe” boundaries for women. FFS, that is the same aesthetic rationale that underpins all the petty and pedantic legalisms that restrict women throughout parts of the Muslim world, be it burkas, driving restrictions, denial of an education…!
      
      I’ve said before that Muslims are free to practice their religion in NZ right up to the point where it infringes on the freedoms of others and our core values. The equality of women is one of them. This is our country, Jo Luxton is one of our official representatives…shake her bloody hand or piss off and send a genuine and capable diplomat from Iran who will. I think the encroachment of sharia conspiracy theory can be over rated. But in this issue, it is not. If and when Jo Luxton goes to Islamic Iran on official government business she should, as a matter or courtesy respect their laws, customs and priorities by covering her her. Surprise, surprise – rational self-preservation kicks in. Moving towards imminent danger is a threat that somepolice or soldiers have been known to refuse. This is one of the well-known flaws with the idea of the ‘good guy with a gun’.

    Funny Odakyu-sen here in the Philippines there are armed Police as well as security guards everywhere who are mostly for effect or show. Most have to buy their own ammunition so with their hard to live on low incomes there a lot more demands for the basics before bullets.
    Have a lot of laughs with them watching locals try to park at the local mall knowing most are harmless even with an M16 or shotgun.

      I still remember my first week in NZ.
      
      Having just come from South Africa where cops and security guards are armed, well trained and knew how to handle guns, it was both refreshing and disturbing to see what passed as security guards in NZ.
      
      Old codgers with comb-overs driving rickety old Armourguard vans – unarmed. Not real security at all. In South Africa those old coots wouldn’t have lasted 5 seconds.
      
      That freaked me out a bit because they were absolutely not up to the task.
      
      However it was good to see that this level of security didn’t get people killed in NZ.
      
      A few weeks after I got here, an Armourguard van got stolen when they stopped at a dairy and went in to buy Cokes and a pie. WTF??? Do that in South Africa and they’d have been left as corpses.
      
      It is a joke having security like this.
      
      Maybe they are Ok for making the people who have never really been threatened feel “safer”, but if the chips ever go down they are just a false sense of security.

I’ve just seen the PM on the news handing out the gong to the NZer of the year. It’s a bloody hot February and the bimbo (PM) is wearing some sort of hideous ankle boot! And looks like she was wearing some sort of long nightie affair as well.
Bogan is out PM, sophistication and elegance is in – but I don’t think she understands what that means.
Embarrassing…..

    Oh and Helen Clarke wore trousers when hosting a very important dinner for the Queen. Caused quite a stir at the time.
    Hey, but come on, those bloody boots!!!!!
    She brought the dress she wore at the swearing in ceremony on line and, incidentally, looked like she was off to a birthday party and wore bloody ankle boots with it too as well as thick black tights.
    Surely she can find a nice pair online – I know it’s not easy for her to pop into the shops like us mere mortals. But, honestly ………

  Now, I do have a fashion quandry in the Jewellery line… Basically, I don’t do Jewellery… just a bare (cheap) silver wedding ring.
  At a push, I might throw on a string of pearls (cheap,?artificial).
  And I sometimes wear a big ugly swatch, silver/blue leather strap.
  
  Should I make more of an effort and start dripping in bling or is this just a wicked waste of Earth’s precious resources?

    The key is to not look like a Christmas tree when it comes to jewellery.
    Jewellery doesn’t have to be the real deal.
    Fake pearls will do, most certainly.
    Simulated diamonds are ok as well. Nobody can tell the difference, though I do wear the real deal.
    After all, we don’t have “Jewellery Police” who can spot a fake over the real deal, like the “Fake Handbag Police” can do.
    And, no, I will not be rushing to order a piece of jewellery from this designer…..
    I happen to not like the PM’s choice of jewellery –
