Kiwibuild is a hoax, ‘planned’ on the back of a moving envelope. So says Duncan Garner, suggesting KiwiBuy is a better name.

Fortunately we have Labour’s Kiwibuild policy to set us right, rather than relying on media opinion pieces. Ah, no. Those numbers are 2 years old, not 6 months old. Mr Twyford was too busy in opposition to update numbers on Labour’s flagship policy. Competent? Nope.

The stand-alone KiwiBuild homes in Auckland will be priced at $500,000-$600,000 with apartments and terraced houses under $500,000. Outside of Auckland prices are likely to range from $300,000-$500,000. These will be high-quality homes built to modern standards. Scale and modern offsite manufacturing techniques will enable these homes to be built at low cost.

Currently, 2-3 bedroom houses are being built at Hobsonville and Waimahia and sold for under $550,000. KiwiBuild will enable more homes to be built in this price range.

  When Garner climbs into Labour, (Along with Soper) you got to think they got problems. We all know they were not prepared to govern. Jacinda was thrust into the limelight weeks before the election and suddenly she is it. With no idea, and no one intelligent or capable to do anything except talk shit. Labour, the collective noun for Moron. And these muppets are deciding our economic future. At least with Stalin, you knew you would just get shot. No one here even knows if we have bullets….

    I think I have figured out why Garner and Soper etc are so annoyed.
    
    They were suckered by all the Labour talk of unicorns and moonbeams. They even shilled for it.
    
    Now it is obvious to them that that position is unsustainable and they feel silly for being suckered.

    And it’s pretty obvious the Labour Party elites don’t have terribly much time for Jacinda and Clarke. Clearly happy to wallow in and rely on her populism for as long as it lasts, of course – but I imaging business continuance and contingency plans are being drawn up behind her back right now.

      Yes – the Unions did not get Calamity Cindy in to the position she is – it was H Clark and Robertson who saw a small loophole in the what was Unions new rules which let them put her in.
      At the next Labour Party AGM I am sure this loophole will be closed.
      CC Was not their choice – Angry(not so at present was) was and I suggest he is pruning and being primed to go back to the Party.
      The Unions I notice appear to have announced that there are currently 320,000 members – this is a drop from 360,000 a year or so ago.
      Where have all the Teachers, Nurses, Midwives and Public Servants gone ?

      But how popular really is Jacinda out there? I know Audrey Young constantly writes that she’s an immensely popular PM, but is that just her own opinion or is she continually polling voters? I see she’s lately acknowledged that Simon Bridges is pulling impressive crowds to his public appearances, but she’s obviously predicting a fail from him in the budget reply (maybe she’ll just write it that way no matter what…).
      No doubt Jacinda is adored by a certain segment of voters out there (heck, Winnie probably is too for that matter) – but how truly large and vital are they?

        I mix with a number of good citizens who on balance are more left leaning than right.
        
        Obviously there are a few deeply entrenched Labour supporters amongst them who still spit when the term Tory is spoken.
        
        What surprises me is the noticeable cooling off of the Commie Chick. Initially she could do no wrong but now to a number she is a step to far for them as she treats the position of PM as another adventure in the land of Alice in Wonderland.
        
        The royal visit seemed to be the turning point.
        
        Others are put off by the boyfriend and question her wisdom / intelligence why she would be hooked up with an obvious gold digger.
        
        The word naive was commonly used describe her.

        How do they feel now? A gift of $3 billion of our tax money is being shipped off to Pacific Islands nations:
        a) without a Government Budget having been presented to or approved by the NZ Parliament; and
        b ) without any explanation to the NZ public of specific projects on which that money is to be spent; or of specific conditions attaching to each part of such expenditure.
        
        You would be incredulous if you witnessed such fiscal irresponsibility down at the local fish & chip shop.

        I had one air head young woman tell me Jacinda was marvelous because she increased paid parental leave. I said “Isn’t it funny that she increased it but doesn’t believe in it? If she did she would take it herself.” She had no answer for me. The thing is people only think of what benefits them and nothing else. Same with all the demented old people who voted for Winston “Because of the gold card”. Let’s hope Labour make life a misery for everyone….they are well on the way already.

  I read Garner’s comments with a sense of real outrage. Anyone reading Labour’s policy pre-election would have known it did not stack up. The building industry is in a state of chaos. Fletcher Buiding is in strife. Hawkins is in receivership. These things do not happen overnight.
  There have been repeated instances where territorial authorities have been taken to task for failing to process applications in a timely manner. In this neck of the woods you would have to wait a couple of years to secure a reputable builder.
  And Labour was going to add 10,000 houses pa to that equation? Pull the other one, Phil! It was never going to happen and the back-tracking started on day one.
  
  So where were you Duncan? I still remember your profound announcement on the friday before the election that the media had dropped a pass by not bothering to read let alone publicise labour’s industrial relations policy. When it was explained to you, to looked like a possum caught in the headlights. That was the problem. You and other members of the media were caught in the glare of Cindy’s stardust, so damn mesmorised by a woman’s weekly view of the world, that you went completely AWOL and let a whole lot of people down.

    We have too many “stars” and “celebrities” in the media now as compared to neutral, working reporters and journalists.
    I still recall Hillary Barry, along with an assortment of other financial experts, shrieking with derision about Joyce’s fiscal hole predictions. There has been no redress for that insult.

    1. Where are all the builder etc coming from and if you get them, where are the rest of us going to get a plumber from, it’s a long drive from Auckland to my place.
    2. 10 000 x $500 000 is $5billion, more than the surplus, can’t collect tax that quick, so BORROWING (that they promise not to do)
    3. Must Plan, get RMA to sign off, IWI to sign off, building permits etc, build the 10 000 and sell the 10 000 houses, all in one year or you have to borrow more next year to build the next 10 000.
    BTW have you told the builder etc that the price won’t go up for 10 years and therefore neither will their wages.
    OOPS can you actually spell S T R I K E phil.

      Recent reports suggest that Mr Twyford is going to have to come up with an extra bucketful of houses in Dunedin in order to cater for the hospital rebuild alone. Reports range between an extra 1000 and 1500 tradies. Most of these will be brought in from overseas.
      
      Unless Twyford intends to establish a single men’s camp an disused paddock somewhere, he may well find that he is going to have to front up with a further 500 houses.
      
      One would reasonably expect that many of the imports will be family men bringing their families and wanting a place to live.
      
      Steven Joyce said that labour either had a black hole or had overlooked the inevitable additional expenditure that every government faces. He was ridiculed. Those who ridiculed should now be feeling somewhat sheepish. Twyford’s was positing 10,000 houses per annum on top of the existing production levels but has completely ignored the additional demand for the likes of the Dunedin hospital rebuild and the major transport projects up north. The guy is a joke.

If he can actually convince people to build the things for him, for minimal profit, and then finds enough first home buyers who can afford $400k+ mortgages, how does he prevent them from being on sold?

    Good questions Niz. I’m sure the books on the $2billion will be completely open and transparent. Until they are not, which will be sooner rather than later.
    
    Labour’s Kiwibuild policy is (was?) for sales within 5 years to repay all (yes all) capital gain. I expect there will be a caveat on the title.
    
    Nothing I have seen says they cannot be bought by a first home buyer and rented out, but then what detail have we seen.
    
    That would be none. Better hurry up with the detail as the first are supposed to be sold in the next 3 months.
    
    If they can be rented out, there may be a few well off parents who gift each of the offspring the deposit to get them on to the property ladder.

You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Now, President Donald Trump’s administration has quietly killed the $10M-a-year CMS. The move jeopardizes plans to verify the national emission cuts agreed to in the Paris climate accords.

The White House has mounted a broad attack on climate science, repeatedly proposing cuts to NASA’s earth science budget, including the CMS, and cancellations of climate missions such as the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3).

Many of the 65 projects supported by the CMS since 2010 focused on understanding the carbon locked up in forests.

It’s an ironic time to kill the program. NASA is planning several space-based carbon observatories, including the OCO-3, which is set to be mounted on the International Space Station later this year, and the Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory, due for launch early next decade.

This type of research is likely to continue, but leadership will pass to Europe, which already operates one carbon-monitoring satellite, with more on the way…

How about advising the leeches to tell their people they can apply for citizenship, residency and work permits in China instead of New Zealand from now on. Choose a friggin side and cut your cloth to suit your extensive waistlines.

And they can have all the thousands of overstayers back as well including all those gang members that can be legally deported. That’s a Trump deal.

The islanders have been playing us off against the Chinks etc for years now and if Winston can’t see it he needs to get off the booze. Even the Samoan PM said as much last night ‘we need support from everybody’. Stop having so many kids then and while you’re at it lose a few pounds.

Plus they have form for squandering aid at best and enriching the elite at worst.

BTW I didn’t write this. A life long former NZ 1st supporter dictated it to me.

    A stand-off between China and America might then position Samoa has a mini, South Pacific version of Korea.
    
    In the meantime, NZ’s card is its role as a destination, though we already fork out aid such, I recall, as paying for secondary education in West Samoa.
    
    Poor Kiwis, brownmail at home, brownmail in the ocean around. It would be ironic if it proves to be Chinese within NZ, and Chinese in the Pacific, who finally end brownmail.

      If the Chinese end up taking over New Zealand (which is entirely possible in say 20 years’ time) then you can absolutely guarantee that the brownmail will end abruptly.
      
      The range of ethnicities and languages in China are more than we here really know about. More even than Europe, and for 2500 years China has kept its identity, body politic and civilisation intact through a dedicated culture of cohesion. Quite simply, they don’t tolerate breakaway groups and ethnicities trying to become separate and get special priveliges. Just look at the way they deal to the Uyghurs and Tibetans, for example.
      
      In much the same way as countries and regions come under ‘spheres of influence’ – e.g. Filipines, S Korea etc under America, the Baltics under Russia – New Zealand will most likely come under China’s sphere of influence as America wanes. At which time you can bet your bottom Renmimbi that all this TOW and brown privelige will come to an abrupt end.

Talking to an ex employee last week. She is a staunch Labour supporter. The conversation turned to politics when I asked her “What do you think of Cindy leaving soon to have the nations baby?”
“Who is Cindy” she asked.
“Your labour pardy leader you voted for” “Oh” was her reply
With the sarcasm dripping of my tongue I asked her
“ Have you got your $10 a week off your Doctors visits,?
“How do you feel about them giving 3 billion of your hard earned taxes to the pacific Islands?
This really got her attention.
“yes she said, I don’t agree with that. “We should be spending our taxes on things here that we need doing, not in the islands.
“Well you voted for them”
“Yes but your lot weren’t doing enough”
We agreed that the Nats hadn’t done enough, but she thought I was agreeing with her. Little did she know that I want them to be tougher on bludgers, RMA reform etc etc etc.

      Stephieboy – because Fox news does actually report news. They have plenty of straight news reporting, check out Brett Baer on Special Report for very fair reporting. Also Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday is very fair and probably leans slightly liberal if anything.
      Meanwhile on CNN on the very day that American hostages are released from North Korea and returned home, their coverage is only about Stormy Daniel’s, Michael Cohen and the Mueller investigation and Russia.
      For CNN there is nothing else but bringing down the duly elected president of the United States. But only when he’s a Republican.

“Kings College lecturer Richard Ned Lebow, as he attended a conference in the United States, was reported by colleague Simona Shironi and subsequently suspended for allegedly saying “Lingerie on the seventh,” as he pressed the button for the seventh floor.

Prof Shironi was said to be “quite shaken” by the incident and claimed not to have confronted Prof Lebow because she “froze.” She said: “The woman standing next to me turned to me and said, ‘I wonder if we should have told them that it is no longer acceptable to make these jokes!’ It took me a while to figure out that this man thought it was funny to make a reference to men shopping for lingerie while attending an academic conference.

“I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that we froze and didn’t confront him. As a survivor of sexual harassment in the academy, I am quite shaken by this incident.”

No-one can decide just how much a child should be abused before definitive protective action should be taken – and usually only after at least one has died with multiple others being tortured longterm – but the middle-class PC have no doubt about their ‘feelings’ being hurt and that it should end someone’s whole career.

It goes along with expensive research (in time and money) being done to ascertain the level of nicotine children have in their hair strands.

Simply bizarre and not a little insane.

The reserve bank kept the official cash rate the same but the BNZ increased its two year mortgage rate on Friday. Expect to see the other banks follow suite over the next few weeks. It’s also becoming harder to get pre-approval for a mortgage. Not because of the clients financial status but because the banks are worried about what area the customer is buying in.
Also distance from work, Travel costs, Infrastructure Tax (Levie) and job security.

  As there have been over 10,000 after shocks damage could have reoccurred at any time after one or many.
  This damage called shoddy repairs could have occurred at any time and may continue to occur.
  But Dr Woods has said she and the EQC Chair Dame Annette King will soon sort it out.
  Problem is not a matter for EQC who are governed to a limit within legislation.
  And that limit has been paid.

He has fallen into line with the COL MO of dumbing down the populace which sadly is less reassuring for those who see detail. Seems his crystal ball is in fact only made of acrylic and will become more foggy as the weather cools and the NZ$ slumps.
  The banks on the other hand have no choice but to deal in tangibles and real world financing issues knowing not all inflation is created domestically. They see a storm brewing for a weakened NZ$ hitting their funding sources and steams before it even reaches the domestic inflation increases coming. I noted the article about Golriz Ghahraman on Stuff yesterday. Her views show that they (the Coalition Government) don’t have a high opinion of the early settlers and their ancestors.

People who built a modern country from scratch in a very short space of time deserve high levels of respect. They have my respect.

  NZ is a ‘country’ with geographical boundaries. That’s all it is. There is no ‘identity’ and never will be again. There are no ‘shared values’ and never will be again. Like all ‘modern’ countries. There’s a lot of talk about it, and a lot of talk about talking about it, but that’s all it is. A collection of disparate groups.
  
  With any shared values or commonality in a majority of the population, you get ‘populism’ which is what Left/liberals are all fighting to destroy. They will only accept ‘divide and rule’ – societies which are completely fragmented. Or perhaps they believe there’s some ‘end point’ where everyone is so ‘same’ that populism will become fashionable.
  
  People want to come here because there’s less violence than elsewhere – and a whole heap of naivete. Anyone can waltz in here, call it their ‘own’ and set about remaking it in their own image. Other than Maori – who reject any claim but their own. Of course, having done all that, all of those people destroyed, and continue to destroy, the ‘country’ that they sought in the first place.
  
  NZ, as far as the ‘baby-boomers’ and their antecedents knew, is just gone – and that includes Maori. It’s not ‘Maori’ and never will be either, if only because ‘modern’ Maori are not ‘Maori’ (in any old sense) and never will be. They’re something entirely different.
  
  We’re not alone. It was interesting to watch the ‘American’ prisoners returned from North Korea on Al Jazeera. They were all Asian and required an interpreter. I can ‘get’ the Asian ethnicity – I don’t ‘get’ the need for an interpreter. What an extraordinary pretence. Trump did well; didn’t even blink. Mind you, it was fortunate for the ‘American’ prisoners that they were Asian – they were in much better condition than the poor, brain-dead/damaged European American sent back.

      It isn’t about not accepting immigrants or minorities. It’s that large proportions of native populations or the ‘majority’ – not only feel ‘unwelcome’ but are actually totally ‘unwelcome’ in their native countries, certainly to participate in any significant part of it.
      
      All ‘countries’ are now to be specifically defined by those who do not comprise the ‘majority’ of the population on any level.
      
      It will be interesting, as I say, to see what happens when the majority are non-born residents or ‘minorities’ – as Auckland is rapidly approaching. Really, the only ‘culture’ is, and will be, money and power.

      If you want some consolation, Kabull, you only have to realise that:

      These things, which were ‘world-leading’ were done by apparently ‘racist, sexist, ageist, old white men’. They, indeed, had a unique identity as ‘New Zealanders’ – supported, as Dave Mann said, by their women.
      
      It is these people who are unacceptable and ‘unwelcome’ today – by a shallow, frivolous, narcissistic, and victim-obsessed generation. I wouldn’t envy them or feel devalued by them. They are not part of that NZ identity, can/will never be, and don’t understand it.
      
      It is the contention of the current ‘liberal’ generation that you could transport the entire native NZ population to e.g. Iran, and swap them for Iranians to be brought back here – and they would still be saying “NZ is a wonderful country. ‘We’ were the first to give women the vote.”
      
      It might be technically true in terms of those living within the geographical boundaries of ‘NZ’ – but it wouldn’t be the same ‘people’, would it? Just a distortion of reality. I’d feel sorry for them, rather than yourself. They have no ‘identity’, have no idea where they’re going, or what they’re really doing. They live in theoretical concepts which have no basis in fact – just fantasy.

She has also has criticised Brexit on multiple occasions. Critics of the European Union say it hides behind a fortress of tariffs that prevent the development of African trade, hence creating mass flows of migrants and refugees. Interesting developments in Italy.
It seems the anti mass migration parties, Five Star ( and anti EU to some extent) will join with Berlusconi in a coalition.
The so called populists ( hate that word) have won again.
Talking to my wife in Malaysia yesterday –she says many people over there see their election result as making history (ie. not just an election win for the previous opposition). One thing they see it as an opportunity to get rid of some of the underlying racism –they are saying forget the “Chinese Malaysian” “Malay” “Indian Malaysian” we are all Malaysians. Interesting times for them.

    On the surface there does not seem to be any division , a visitor would not see it as obvious division. But in general terms the ethnic Malays have the political / bureaucratic power and so if you are of Indian descent, for example, it is hard to get high up Government jobs. There are schools just for Malays but the Chinese ( who in are behind much of the business) have built Chinese schools.
    I am generalising to some extent –there are wealthy Malay and Indian businessmen and there are poor Malays , Chinese and Indians.
    So the divisions are of race and to a lesser degree religion.

    Malaysia, still including Singapore and probably still called Malaya, would have been Chinese dominated if British Commonwealth troops hadn’t subdued the Chinese Communist insurgency in Malaya.
    
    The Chinese have business skills, and Singaporeans, overwhelmingly Chinese, have become the seventh richest citizens in the world, while Malaysians are the 70th (seventieth) richest. That comparison is by GDP per capita.
    
    In Malaysia – and in Indonesia – foreign investors often seek firms owned by Chinese rather than locals, and firms run by Chinese.

    The division was racial and economic.
    In the 1960s when the State of Malaysia was first formed there was tension between the economic and political power bases in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
    When Singapore was part of the Federation of Malaysia from 1963 to 1965, inter-racial tensions were rife. Singaporean political leaders such as Lee Kuan Yew began to advocate for a “Malaysian Malaysia”, opposing the Malaysian Federal Government’s vision of an ethnic-based Malay Malaysia.
    
    The majority Malays promoted use of Bahasa Melayu (Malay) in schools and Government Jobs.
    
    NZ started getting Chinese Malay secondary school students in the 1970s as they couldn’t get a decent education in their own towns.
    
    Even today top Chinese Malay students find it difficult to get entry into Medical and Engineering Schools in the Malaysian Universities.
    
    When Lee Kuan Yew took Singapore out of the Malaysian federation, he promoted a “Singaporean Singapore” identity based on racial equality, with race acting as a secondary identifier alongside the Singaporean national identity.
    Singapore adopted four official languages – English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil – and implemented a bilingual education policy.

Yesterday a regular commenter on here reported attending a public meeting where Simon Bridges was speaking – in Cambridge was it?
The story about this on Stuff was accompanied by photos showing quite a few at the meeting were from the older age group.
The comments were derisive of this: too many old folks, no diversity of race, age etc – all the currently fashionable judgements.
A meeting held during a weekday is unlikely to have working people or students of any age or race able to attend.
So let’s just be ageist and insult the older generation of taxpayers and ratepayers who did go. The old, white men and women whose opinions and aspirations for our society are disparaged by the ignorant as irrelevant.
There is too much hypocrisy here.

  I always assumed that Pharmac was able to negotiate a good discount (but nothing like 80%) for buying in bulk, and then they passed the ‘approved’ medicines on to the public at a hugely subsidised rate (i.e. paid for our of our taxes).
  
  I would be surprised and shocked if you’re correct. Anyway, how could any organisation ‘force’ an American drug company to charge such ridiculously low prices? I think you’re mistaken. I certainly hope you’re mistaken!

    I’m on meds for cholesterol and Warfarin for blood thinning. My cholesterol tabs cost me 60 bucks a month in NZ because the gummint dont subsidise the specific brand that I have to take ( statin free )
    Here in Thailand I get the same tablet for $3 NZ per month. Some fucker somewhere is making a killing.

So exactly who is paying Michael Avenatti? And is he a lawyer, an opposition researcher, a journalist, or a campaign operative?

He wants to make the discussion all about where Michael Cohen, President Trump’s personal attorney, got his money but, to have clean hands, Avenatti needs to come forward with exactly who is financing his operation, who his sources were for detailed banking information, and whether he really is an attorney solely representing Stormy Daniels or just using her as cover to wage a political operation.

From the beginning, this has been fishy. Daniels’s previous lawyer advised her to stick to her agreements. In contrast, Avenatti okayed her violating with impunity her non-disclosure agreement on “60 Minutes” despite a binding arbitration judgment against her. She acknowledged on Twitter that she is not paying for her lawyer. So who is? And did he indemnify her against all multimillion-dollar penalties?

    Beef cheeks have been traditionally used in saveloys because of the expected texture they add.
    
    Having once worked in a NZ small goods factory the quality of the food is excellent. Pork & mutton plus additives like milk powder and certified seasonings. All meat was freshly killed and inspected with no reject meat being allowed. Some of the more fatty pig was used but that was all according to recipe. The fact that it was turned to paste is for the packaging in prepared sheep casings or the newer continuous varieties.

I’m Jacinda. We met a few months ago and perhaps a misunderstanding occured-it may have something to do with my pregnancy, but lets move on. Recently one of our trains left the track up in Auckland and on investigation it appears the track or something to do with the rails was at fault possibly due to using Chinese Steel, but let’s get down to brass tracks, if we need to replace and I don’t- sorry My Foreign Minister informs me-our Glenbrook steel mill can’t cope or the workers may cause trouble getting out the old blue prints, we were wondering,which we are doing a lot of recently, if we could get a trade deal with you and buy a few lengths of track. A Mississippi chain gang would assist us as well with the promise of citizenship- a win win situation. Hope all is well. Can you see North Korea from Alaska, its the coal polution or radiation reflection that reduces the distance I suppose. Oh, I just felt a litlle kick,(winston stop it). He says trains in Russia are the most reliable. I must go.

      Well, at least they start thinning out a bit after midday JB. By then they’ve sorted out any new fangled, anti Jesus stuff, the gin bottle’s empty & it’s time for a bit of shut-eye. 🙂

The Salvation Army says the Government may fall well short of targets for urgent social housing this winter.

The Housing First scheme finds homes for the long-term homeless and those with multiple or complex needs.

“Most of them are available now but we’re going to continue through the winter to meet that target of 1500,” said Mr Twyford.

“We’ve made really great progress in the last six months and we’ll continue to go flat out through the winter.”

But figures released by Mr Twyford’s office show just 36 percent of the 1500 places are available now, and most of those are in transitional housing.

Only 306 of the 1071 new state housing places are ready, and 236 of the 416 transitional housing places.
