Woke up this morning. No Party. No fracking Party. What has gone wrong, National? The principle of no principles!

Round up the climate scientists! Tens of thousands (all crooked) publishing 60,000 papers a year* (all fake). No wonder rational people think there’s something to it!

Fuck that! We need more science denial and rabid disbelief!

I call for more polling. Find out what “our people” want! What? They want more? At any cost to the environment? What are they, greedy or stupid? Ye gods, both?

So the Police are reopening their investigation into Pike River, five years after the original investigation was closed. They are treating it as a possible crime scene and are already in discussion with Pike River families.
Surely I don’t smell a political motive here. Tell me it’s not true. Also tell me that the Police aren’t taking instructions from the CoL Government.
It’s not all bad however. If the Police are going to drag every possible suspect into this, surely they couldn’t exclude the union boss at the time who said that the mine was a safe workplace.
Yes, that was Angry Andy.
And while they’re at it they could add the Parliamentarians of the time (you know who you are) who insisted that the mine be designed as the only uphill mine in the world and allowed only one ventilation shaft. A methane bomb waiting to go off.
The Police investigation needs to be all-encompassing. If all it’s going to do is pin the blame on a couple of individuals who were unlucky enough to be working for Pike River at the time then it will be nothing but a politically-driven witch hunt.

    Quite so RoWiWoR. After all, the Andrew Little who was head honcho of the EPMU sang a very different song to Andrew Little, Cabinet Minister; here’s a couple of examples:
    
    The EPMU represented approximately half of the 140 miners on the site.
    
    After the first explosion the EPMU strongly defended the management of PRC.
    
    EPMU National secretary Andrew Little (now a Labour MP) told the New Zealand Herald on November 22 2010 that there was “nothing unusual about Pike River or this mine that we’ve been particularly concerned about”.
    
    He then appeared on TVNZ’s Close Up to again defend PRC management.
    
    He told Close Up that underground mining was inherently unsafe and the risk of gas explosions, particularly on the West Coast, was high.
    
    While the industry was aware of the risks and took the necessary precautions, unfortunately these kinds of incidents still happened, he argued.
    
    Then there was this, just a few days later:
    
    On November 26, 2010 the Dominion Post ran an article that denounced ‘wild’ rumours that the mine was not safe. It declared that “Any suggestion of obvious or known safety lapses does not find traction with unionised staff or union leader Andrew Little.”
    
    Andrew Little’s conciliatory views toward PRC management were echoed by Labour MP Damien O’Connor. He suggested that no one was responsible for the accident and that the disaster was “just one of these things that the West Coast unfortunately has had to get used to over the years”.
    
    Little and O’Connor’s views would of found favour with the Minister for Energy and Resources, Gerry Brownlee. He insisted that PRC had “an absolute focus on health and safety”.
    
    So here we had the Government, the Labour Party and the EPMU all lining up to defend the management of PRC

    These are actual quotes from Andrew Little, head of the union that represented the bulk of the Pike River workers. The Dom-Post has him denying any safety lapses at Pike River, whilst the Herald quote says there was “nothing unusual” about Pike River.
    
    However the most important quote is the one Little made on Close Up where he said that mining underground was “inherently unsafe”, but that staff and management at Pike River took steps to mitigate the risk.
    
    This could all blow up in Andrew Little’s face if the Police find that employee behaviour contributed to the tragic explosion there.

      This is purely hearsay, but I had friends who lived in Greymouth at the time who said the miners were well aware of the dangers in the mine, but were after the very large bonuses offered. How much truth there is in that I don’t know, but it sounds plausible.

        I occasionally worked up at the site and the rumors are true, one of the recruitment officers was even trying to get me to sign up as an untrained miner suggesting i could make far more money than i was with my small business. I also spoke to miners from Spring creek that said they would never work in Pike river, one even said to me “mark my words, that mine is going to blow up”.

        The dangers of this mine were well known.
        Geologists had identified that the strata were likely to contain gas deposits.
        Experienced westCoast miners would have been well aware of the dangers before work started.
        They can’t have been in any doubt about the problems with gas they were encountering… as there is plenty of evidence that the miners were gaming the system.

        Even if all that is true, and it probably is, (knowing the “she’ll be right” attitude here), are the workers in charge or is the management?
        Did all 29 workers deserve to die because some idiots were disabling the gas detectors?
        In many places in Australia when you’re working outdoors, you wear sunscreen or you get the sack.
        And it’s only your own life you are endangering.
        The buck is supposed to stop with the management.

        Sharunda Barunda, in his/her 12.04 post, touches on the experience of the Pike River miners. Here’s what Pike River Coal Ltd’s former chairman, John Dow, was reported as saying at the Royal Commission inquiry:
        
        In response to criticism Pike had inexperienced miners, Dow said all mines faced difficulties getting experienced miners because of high international demand.
        
        However, he noted the mine had a very experienced and skilled senior team.
        
        ”The board would expect these challenges would be picked up and dealt with appropriately at site.”
        
        Health and safety was always considered before production demands, he said.
        
        Dow disputed earlier claims a bonus offered to staff for hydro-mining production impacted on health and safety.
        
        He said he was surprised Pike’s then safety and training manager, Neville Rockhouse, did not raise safety issues with him, despite highlighting many safety concerns to the inquiry.

        The report into the disaster is on line and makes very interesting reading.
        
        The safety officer Rockhouse although he lost his son in the explosion has to be put under the blow torch to explain alleged safety breaches. I cannot believe he has not been investigated.
        
        Maybe the Police might find time for this after they sort out the Labour sex camp investigation.
        
        Had the mine been in Australia it would have been shut down.
        
        Mike Hosking made some very interesting comments this morning where he reminded us that when Ardern was promising the world pre election their experts claimed that the mine was safe to enter.
        
        More BS from a compulsive liar who now keeps delaying the entry to 2020. Just in time for the election….. hush my mouth….

    The Royal Commission laid all issues of culpability with the Pike River Mining company and its management.
    A properly resourced and funded Mines inpectorate could well have prevented things getting so bad.
    Anybody else is not really believeable unless…

  A lengthy new investigation.

    Key didnt honour his promises to the Mine families and worse he didnt even admit he had ‘moved on’ just walked all over them.
    
    Just to make it worse , first Key denied NZ had lax mining standards, then later backtracked and told ‘The Australian’ Pike River wouldnt have got approval there. Finally he tried to cover his tracks by denying he said NZ standards were lower.

      Nats INHERITED THE MINE.
      Mine got approval under LABOUR.
      Key was smart not go in, watch this space for Labour backing themselves into a corner.
      They have no way of judging the safety of the mine so promises are hollow at best.

        Mine that started coal mining under national wasnt completely same project that was approved under labour, especially ‘escape shaft and new exit’ were pushed back into ‘to do list’
        
        lax mining codes were written in 1990s after longstanding mining rules were considered too restrictive and too expensive to run, mining inspectors virtually disappeared.

  They will never be able to establish with any certainty the cause of the explosion and never be able to get to the mine workings.
  
  There’s no point wasting scarce police resources on this while dairies are being robbed , while gangs import drugs and guns and while people drive their cars while texting ( resulting in multiple deaths on the roads).

  This Police action in reopening the case against ??? is puzzling. Appears that a possible political view is being aired.
  Is it that they will only open up the case when they get into the Drift – not to the actual mine as this is behind a huge rock fall of unknown volume where if there are any bodies, will be found?
  I hope that the Police will re read the Inquiry again when it was even suggested that some of the miners my have covered up the gas sensors and other small misdemeanors, in breach of the mine rules.
  As an obtuse direction I wonder whether the Mayor of Greymouth, Tony Kockshorn, who owns the local papers, and has just bought another one, and retiring from the Mayoralty to run his papers has a finger in the pie – it being known locally that he would like to be the MP for the Coast.
  O’Connor should be careful if he wishes to remain the local MP where he is doing a good job in that role despite his colleagues.

    There will need to be an inquest into the deaths if any remains are found, and it is the responsibility of the Police to gather evidence to assist the Coroner. If there is a scene opened up where there have been deaths then of course the Police will want to look at it. The only political interference behind what the cops have said is that which is leading to the attempt to enter the drift, if it ever takes place.

      Are the investigators going to look at the Greens for blocking the extra air shafts that should have been mandatory?The Greens also prevented Pike being an opencast coal mine, which coal should always be!

        Royal Commission said opencast was never even considered. Geologic and physical considerations even now would rule that out as impossible, compare with open cast on Denison plateau

        While Pike River Coal Ltd didn’t envisage opencast mining, Solid Energy, when looking at the collapsed venture, did suggest that parts of the Pike River seams might be extracted by open cast methods, but said that this would be challenging.
        
        Solid Energy, which was itself brought down by the collapsing world price of coal, in 2013 suggested an opencast mine for the shallower Pike River seams, stretching into a national park.
        
        It added further work would be needed, along with government backing, to investigate whether Pike River coal could be extracted through an opencast mine.
        
        At the time, Solid Energy was in a bad financial state, and any opencast investigation would have required State investment.
        
        Given the cost of initially trucking, then railing the coal to Lyttelton before shipment to Asian markets, any opencast coal from Pike River would have been vulnerable early to falls in world coal prices.
        
        As a layman, I wonder why the explosions’ proof of high levels of methane in the Pike River seams hasn’t woken the country to the potential of fracking CSG gas from South Island and Waikato mines.

    He rarely visits the coast, once a month at most, then returns north to where he lives.
    
    People south of Hokitika do not remember ever seeing him south of the airport, so there are hundreds of kilometers of his electorate that he has never visited. Perhaps he is doing well by the West Coast through not being here ?

        His “office” in Greymouth is the local RSA, and I’ve seen his sign there, but upon enquiry he had already left for that day.
        
        Motueka is a bit far to expect coasters to travel to see their local MP. Suffers the invisible man syndrome !
        
        In HariHari locals think Paula Bennett is their local MP as she is the only one they ever remember seeing there !

    How is O’Connor doing a good job for the Coast? The only thing he is doing is exploiting the deluded belief by older generations that the Labour party they voted for 40 years ago still exists.
    But I’ll tell you something, that delusion seems to have turned a corner, going from recent commentary and public opinion in the Greymouth area the consensus seems to be that Peters is a traitor, Labour have lied and this is the end of their tenure on the West Coast.

  @CM Also not forgetting that some of the miners allegedly fly sprayed the mine’s sensors which would cancel out early warning of methane gas in the area of the mine.Just another wee codicil to the potential so called crime scene.

      This from the royal commission,
      
      Underground, difficulties arose because of a shortage of underviewers and deputies, a high ratio of inexperienced to experienced miners and the presence of overseas miners unused to New Zealand mining conditions.
      A serious problem was the workers’ practice of bypassing safety devices on mining machinery so work could continue regardless of the presence of methane. This was reckless behaviour. There were also reports of other conduct and incidents caused by inexperience, inadequate training and failures to follow procedures.

  They will also have to look at their own Inspector Gary Knowles, who was in charge of the rescue but had no experience in mining.
  From all accounts he was biggest obstacle against going into the mine to affect a rescue.

      Sad that the Health and Safety Manager allowed both his sons to be miners there – sadly one never got out.
      He said at the Royal Commission that the mine was unsafe or something similar – yet he and his family remained in the company.
      But it is his wife along with Monk is one of the two protagonists wanting more – what ! of course.

      How about the hype in the float of Pike River, that cost investors heaps as well as so many miners their lives? It was hype from the beginning, initially with talk of redeveloping Greymouth Port, upgraded roads, and round-the-clock convoys of trucks ferrying coal to the wharves.
      
      There’s been an excellent book written on the mine disaster: Rebecca Macfie’s Tragedy at Pike River Mine: How and Why 29 Men Died. It will probably be in from your local library.

  Perhaps it’s time for another look at the way the police control of the mine immediately after the explosion.
  
  As pointed out in Australia, what would police know about mining?
  
  But, in the absence of anyone-else, didn’t the police block entry between the two initial explosions? They were probably right, but shouldn’t that decision be included in any new investigation?
  
  Expecting the police to run engineering investigations such as the Pike mine disaster and the collapse of the CTV building is putting too much on them.
  
  Given that underground mining is being killed by the Greens, is it worth bringing in from overseas the needed mining engineers and other industry specialists to reach meaningful conclusions from a Pike River inquiry.
  
  Maybe this is a diversion from the promise of re-entry of the mine.

  Sadly Captain based on recent Police “results” it will be nothing more than an expensive exercise to shut the whole issue of liability down. Few missed the irony that even though Angry Andy is donkey deep in what happened he is now in charge of re-entry. With all the other deflections from Police since the COL came to power do you honestly expect anything positive for NZ to come out of this whitewash exercise? Timing is everything and it is almost a certainty their internal polling is looking like a bon voyage message. If, you want to argue percentage of the vote at 2014 election, then 3.97% went to the Conservatives, so the combined National plus allies equalled 53.20 versus Labour plus allies equalled 45.61% (includes Internet Mana).
    
    As for using the UK electoral position, that is lame. For those who don’t know:
    1. The UK has a first past the post electoral system (as NZ had prior to 1996);
    2. Mary’s Tories were the largest single part returned in last year’s election, but failed to get a majority (323 seats);
    3. After the election May formalised an arrangement with the DUP (the Democratic Ulster Party);
    4 The provence of Northern Ireland returns to Westminster a combination of local MPs representing their communities based on the traditional divide of Protestant v Catholic;
    5. Ulster has a population of 1.5m out of a total UK population of 65mill, so although the DUP won a majority of the seats in Ulster to expect them to have more than 1% of the vote (given the number of votes in Ulster & the UK).
    So, your UK comparison on percentages of the vote is spurious.
    
    So, if we are “ignorant twats” for questioning the validity of minority Peters, then you are just as hollow and as big a sham as Toothy with your posts.

Further daft virtue signalling from the Christchurch City Council. The soon to be built Christchurch Convention Centre is to be called Te Pae. As with its renaming of the Christchurch Central Library such rebranding wholly removes the sense of location and function of the facility. Few will be able to pronounce it correctly and it will farcically come to be called The Pie.

No doubt he name was ‘gifted’- at some cost to ratepayers.

    Foreigners who are familiar with Maori are rare, and calling the centre Te Pae fails many of the requirements of a good brand name.
    
    The internet has several sites repeating the lessons and techniques of marketing and brands. I’ve linked to an Indian marketing site, which is as apposite as any.
    
    Drawing on it:
    
    1. A brand should be easy to remember. Te Pae won’t be easy for foreigners to remember, let alone the majority of New Zealanders who don’t speak Maori.
    
    2. Suggestions and associations – for non-Maori speakers they will be absent.
    
    “A well-chosen name or symbol should be suggestive of quality, or may be associated with superiority or a great personality.”
    
    3. Appropriateness, and the power of linking a name to something with what the marketing site calls mystique. Across languages this will be difficult, and especially difficult when one of the languages is unknown, as Maori will be to most foreigners.
    
    “It should be appropriate: Many products are surrounded by a certain mystique in the minds of the consumer.”
    
    The marketing site also notes:
    
    “Mostly a company develops several names for a product and makes a choice later after debate and discussion.”

Towards the end of the program, they screened an old video-clip of a very much younger *NICKY KAYE* during her ‘hippy days’.

Unfortunately the socialists who run the country here are unilaterally shutting down entire industries, raising taxes and doing their absolute best to drag the economy down.

But our media says that Trump is an idiot and Jacinda is smart. There is a disconnect between academic liberal types who just do not understand the real world. America is going from strength to strength and over here business confidence is plummeting.

A way for National to wrong foot the government (& Hager).

Take on board his investigation into NZ providing safe haven for those providing legal cover to those who seek to launder funds taken from countries with corrupt governments.

Putting my personal views of Hager to one side, what is important is NZ’s reputation as a country that is free from corruption at both a government and commercial level.

Therefore, with his current investigation, Hager is providing an open goal for National to act and make the government look like they are failing to look and think about the “big picture” yet again.

    After all, how many people are actually going to miss the snails?
    Most gardeners would be very pleased if they didn’t need to be concerned with the imported English snail in their gardens.
    
    The Greens seem to be so besotted with “the snails” and it makes me wonder are they missing having a few moa wandering around too.
    Throughout Earth’s history, species of many kinds have become extinct for one reason or another or we could all have a brontosaurus or two chomping through the cabbages in our backyards.

I was disappointed with Bridges this morning. Conceding the great value in the forthcoming advice from the climate commission. The commission is just a bunch of advisors. Governments have had no shortage of advice on climate change policy since forever.

  He has guaranteed the bill will pass ( The Climate Commission is an important but small part of the bill if it is as Shaw said it will be, based on the UK Climate Act)

      They are. It is an Auckland Transport cycling survey. I can assure you, as with all Auckland Council and Auckland Transport surveys, they are not testing a survey population scientifically selected. The result is findings that are rubbish e.g. 38% of Aucklanders cycle or 65% are in favour of cycle lanes. Plus you need to know what an occasional cyclist is, that is a person who may get on a bike once or twice a month.
      
      On the basis of these dodgy surveys, they are encouraging council and AT to shower cycling with more money.
      
      Remember, for the movement of people, public safety and eliminating congestion, cycling is the worst investment that can be made along with trams. That is why both scored low in Auckland Transport Regional Public Transport Plan.
      
      It is left wing/liberal numpties, like Wilson who are dim witted enough to believe that this type of virtue signalling really helps the debate about the types of cities we need. It doesn’t. Our problem is NZ does not have enough intelligent strategic thinkers.

Point being that the teacher prolly needs a few lessons in history herself.     Do not know why ztev has been downticked so heavily. He is quite right and the Judge has interpreted the Hague Convention quite correctly. The Judge will have explained this in his judgment (which has yet to surface on the Justice web site).
    Presumably the mother has immigration status to be in NZ and as such may access the appropriate benefits.
    Unfortunately these cases can get very twisted and convoluted and have exercised the minds of judges in the highest courts.

      1. In the European home country, the courts granted custody to the father, because the mother has a hatered to the child’s father that could not be explained and was held to be not conducive to the girl receiving a balanced upbringing;
      2. The mother absconded with the daughter, nobody had knowledge where to;
      3. The mother lied to immigration authorities when settling here, so much So, INZ were ordered mother and daughter to be deported;
      4. Mother & daughter were only found after being recognised because of a viral internet campaign. This was 2 years after they had arrived here;
      5. Both the district court & high court have found in favour of the mother on the grounds the child is now settled here and sees herself as a Kiwi;
      6. In order for the father to see his daughter, he is now migrating to NZ. However, experts are concerned what relationship the father will have his daughter, because they fear the mother will have infected the daughter with her hatered of the father.
      
      The case calls into question the Hague convention, as not fit for purpose. It did not protect the child and it did not afford any protection to the father. Seriously, if it had been the father who absconded with the daughter, would they have reached the same decisions?

I heard Ardern on a RNZ Morning Report recording say “nothing is a done deal until it’s gone to Cabinet” and “We negotiate absolutely everything we do as a government.”
So from that, I take it that the announcement on ending Oil and Gas exploration in Taranaki isn’t a done deal as it hasn’t been taken to Cabinet.

        According to the 1:00 p.m. (Japan Time) NHK News, the 80-year-old guy was killed by a concrete block wall (around the boundary of a private dwelling) which fell out onto the sidewalk as he was walking past. The traditional-style block wall did not have reinforcing rods in it.
        Similarly the 9-year-old girl was on her way to school (at 7:48 a.m.) when the top half of a concrete-block wall next to the sidewalk fell on her. (The wall appeared to have been built on the top of an older wall, and was not joined internally by reinforcing rods to the base wall, so it simply fell over.)
        A third unlucky person (a pensioner) was crushed by a heavy bookcase that fell over in their 6th-floor apartment. (And there are plenty of ads on public TV telling people to secure their bookcases in case of earthquakes, but a lot of people don’t.)

“Submit against Ngati Porou coastal bill
For those following the long-running shambles to do with tribal claims for the coast, Friday is the deadline for submissions on the Nga Rohe Moana o Nga Hapu o Ngati Porou Bill (No. 2), which gives effect to a deed of agreement between Ngati Porou and the Crown for around 200 km of the East Coast coastline north of Gisborne.

Ngati Porou had reached an agreement on the coastal area in 2008 under Labour’s Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004, but that Act was replaced by National’s Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011, and Ngati Porou did not lodge a claim under that Act within the time period despite having six years to do so.

Until seven years ago, the whole coastal marine area, from the mean high-water springs mark out 12 nautical miles, was vested in the Crown on behalf of all New Zealanders, with everyone having free access.

But under the 2011 Act, those seeking recognition of protected customary rights or customary marine title were enabled to make a claim for that area subject to providing evidence that they had used the area continuously and ‘exclusively’ since 1840 and that they owned the land bordering their claim. This either had to be proven in the High Court or negotiated with the Minister.

Photos of stage coaches driving along the beaches, in the sea, and on tracks around promontories, show that the coast along the area claimed by Ngati Porou was the main path for walkers and coaches from 1840 until the Second World War. Use of the area by travellers disprove claims of exclusive use and should disqualify the Ngati Porou claim for that coastal area.

It appears that Labour’s Michael Cullen negotiated a deal with Ngati Porou and National renegotiated that deal recognising new privileges, even though the validity of Ngati Porou’s claim had never been verified and tested in the High Court.

This bill at least should be opposed on the basis that everyone else had six years in which to lodge their claim – plenty of time for Ngati Porou to comply. A two-year extension is unacceptable, especially as it will delay all other claims that overlap the area.”
