A few thoughts from last week –

1: Why would Jacinda ask Cullen to basically recommend a Capital Gains Tax when he avoided the idea during nine long years of finding new and exciting ways of taxing Rich Pricks?

2: Economic Development Minister David Parker said on Radio Live with Ryan Bridge Monday p.m. that people with undeveloped land (he admitted they would be mostly Maori) effectively won’t face the same regulations and restrictions as other farmers if they develop to become economic. They’ll get a free hit. Not a peep since in any other media.

3: Because Jacinda and Shaw would not know an ordinary NZer if they fell over one, they don’t understand that high gas prices won’t just piss off commuters.

Kiwis are motor heads.

Big country needs big cars, to tow boats etc. For every EV sold, 65+ SUVs sold, there’s a good reason for this. Kiwis know what gas costs in Aussie and they will be damned if they are going to sell that new Ford Ranger just cos of some greenie bullshit.

4: Why is the media not asking Shaw or Genter or Davidson if they approve of the petrol price hikes? Because they will say yes?

5: National’s campaign slogan going into 2020: ‘Told You So’

  The other problem is all those who voted Winston to teach National a lesson, thinking that Winston would be a ‘moderating’ influence on a National government. They could well vote Winston again if they have negative feelings about National even if it means Jacinda and co get another term.

    Well then, Peterwn, I guess the challenge is how to turn around Winston worshippers from having “negative feelings about National.”
    Any ideas?
    I know someone (older conservative male) who is/was a great Winston 1st devotee, but who is now disappointed and disillusioned by what he sees as a betrayal of the reasons he voted for NZF.
    So who would he vote for now? His perception is that National is not interested in the likes of him.

      But is his voice such a minority that pandering to his concerns could lose National more votes than it gains. This is National’s dilemma – trying to satisfy this class of voter without eroding the all important centre support that is essential for victory. Savvy voters understand this dilemma. Voters like the guy you know cannot or will not comprehend this.
      National will no doubt try to do its best without excessively blatantly telling different groups of voters different things and then being caught out as other parties have been. Problem also is Winston and Greens can say what they like (and to some extent Jacinda and co) and get away with it. Simon Bridges cannot without being pulled up in due course.

        So is what you are saying, Peterwn, is that politicians and their parties do not care about the views, knowledge or aspirations of individuals and that they should subscribe to FIFO ?
        Mmmm- it is easy to dismiss and underate the experience of others not in your immediate power circle, but they still exist and can change the course of an election.
        This particular voter is disillusioned with his choice last time and is looking round for an alternative next time. If the National Party can afford to be arrogant with their assessment of him, and don’t care if he changes his vote to them or not, then so be it.

        Just remember if you do not like Labour, an abstention (or for a party that does not get anyone into Parliament) is half a vote for Labour. A vote for Greens is a 99.9% vote for Labour.
        A vote for Winston is effectively a 90% vote for Labour.
        Perhaps you can explain this to your good mate.

    “He raped her three times in front of her daughter, and strangled them both. She suffered a broken tooth and severe bruising to her face and genital area. The daughter had trouble breathing afterwards.
    
    The maximum sentence for rape is 20 years. This is not the worst of the worst. But it’s pretty horrific. Surely he would get 15 years or so and a non parole period of say two thirds of that.
    
    But no he got eight years and no non-parole period which means he is eligible for parole in two years and eight months!
    
    Andrew Little says our sentences are too excessive and punitive. How is this an excessive sentence? It is the opposite.
    
    Mekuli got a 35% discount for his youth and guilty plea. But his guilty plea was the day before trial which is the last possible time. I’ve seen other rulings where you get only a 10% discount for such a late guilty plea.
    
    The victim is rightly upset:
    
    “It is unbelievable he has only got eight years. It is not nearly enough,” she said.
    
    “He almost killed me. He almost killed my daughter.”
    
    She hoped judges dealing with such criminals in future would not be so lenient on offenders like Mekuli.”

      When Muldoon was PM the government controlled the price of petrol, dictated the annual wage increases (General Wage Order), dictated mortgage rates, controlled the value of the dollar, introduced carless days, brought in their National Superannuation scheme which lead to crippling tax rates and ultimately instigated a price & wage freeze. That was as close to a socialist administration as this country as seen in recent times.
      Nevertheless.
      If it wasn’t for Bob Jones, whose party split the vote, they probably still would have won the 1984 election.

        You are correct and the Labour government that followed Muldoon was the furthest right government NZ has experienced in the last century (except the very short time the great Ruth was Minister of Finance in the otherwise very damaging Bolger crowd).

      Plus, their stunning rise to the benches courtesy of the arsehole Winston, had a stunning effect on the NZ dollar leading to a 10+% drop which has also filtered through to the pumps.

        I’m no apologist for Labour but make no mistake the drop in our dollar is due not so much to the current gubmint but to global cyclical trends .
        
        As a small open trading economy we have very little control over our $. And likewise the price of oil.

    Maternity care can only do so much when the recipients do not choose to look after their health and the welfare of the child during pregnancy. The mothers who are smoking, drinking or taking drugs and not eating nutritious food is not the fault of health professionals.

  Years ago , the RNZ chick who presented the morning show used to bang on about “lack of access” for these people to health services. One day she finally said , “Oh we’ve looked at this and the reason they have a lack of access is ……..they don’t turn up for their appointments”
  
  As to sub standard ……has anyone else noticed that there’s 2 entrances to hospital buildings here in Aotearoa ,formerly New Zealand . Browns’ Gate / White’s Gate , and then there’s different waiting rooms , different doctors and nurses , different operating rooms and wards , different pharmacies and even different prescriptions , all depending on your colour.
  
  How is it that the media never pick up on these obvious different treatment regimes that lead to such hugely differing health “outcomes” ? /

    You jest. But the current thinking is that Maori should have bowel cancer checks earlier than whities, although far more white people have bowel cancer.
    
    Just because Maori have a shorter life span (from other causes) and so, well, they should get better (yes, that would be better for everyone) health treatment even for bowel cancer.

  This is an astute observation, and it highlights a crucial social issue. As far as the Maori ‘bi-cultural’ separatists and their politically correct supporters are concerned, there are only two classes of people in this country: ‘Maori’ and ‘Pakeha’. The former are part-Maori, who self-identify, on the basis of claimed bloodline, and the latter are all of us ‘whites’ (European or otherwise).
  However, there is an increasing and obvious third group: ‘Others’. They come from China, India, South-East Asia, Africa, and elsewhere; for good or ill (time alone will tell) they will comprise an increasingly significant proportion of the population. Accordingly, they will (rightly, in my opinion) demand a greater say in the affairs of this country. Maori won’t like that, because it will both challenge and dilute their traditional privileged position as a (fictional) ‘Treaty partner’.
  This situation demands to be addressed by parliament, sooner rather than later; a good starting point would be a declaration that all New Zealand citizens (whether or not to include permanent residents would be up for debate) are of equal status before the law, and deserving of equal consideration in all matters, regardless of ethno-racial identity.

  Interesting G152 that there seems to be only a limited breakdown perhaps to suit a certain narrative being pushed very hard about perceived disadvantages. It is just as important to consider ALL the relevant factors that cause this small percentage variance and not just race. Driving on the Waikato exprersway between Hamilton and Taupiri yesterday and come up to a slow line of cars, trucks and bus. I was towing a trailer at the time. Everything was slowly passing the slow traveling vehicle doing 80 klms. Trucks with trailers, even I pulled out to pass this slow car.
It was a genesis branded electric car.
Not a very good advert for their brand if the best it can do is 80 on the expressway and holding up the flow of traffic.

  I have driven slower than general traffic but watch my mirror and left others past and quickly as is safe.
  When I was towing my large trailer sailer. But I guess in the north island the traffic is so dense* such considerate driving is not possible.

  Try catching a taxi in Auckland where most are those ugly box like Toyota’s. The drivers are almost all from Central Asia and will take you on an extended joy ride because they haven’t got a clue where your suburb is. This results in an exorbitant fare of which there are two.One fare is what is on the meter but is only available to card holders, the second is an arbitrary cash fare which is twice the meter amount. The driver will then advise he has no change for anything larger than a $50 note. It is called ripping off the whitey or any other dumb smuck kiwi.
  Also electric cabs are cheaper to run, therefore logic suggests the fares should reflect that. Yeah right.

  The problem with the major roading projects was the corresponding syphoning of funds from lesser quality, rural roads. This caused a real difference of quality between the great new roads and the old roads. Which of course leads to drivers having more accidents on the lesser roads. We can’t do everything. I think it’s probably a good idea that we concentrated on those roads causing the biggest damage for a while.

      Well that depends doesn’t it on how the customer is affected by those actions. the customer being the person who drives on the roads. Now MM you can never argue that the Paraparaumu expressway is not worth it for those that use it given the safety and time savings compared with the old road. I’m old enough to remember seeing cars in the raupo swamp there.
      
      If you consider the Tauranga Eastern link compared to the old Te Puke rd then there is no comparison and in that case rebuilding the road to a modern standard was really a no go. Its just was never going to be any good.
      Now look at the Kati rd and despite the nearly 50 years I have lived there and millions spent on patching it up it is still and will remain, even with millions more, an unsafe rd., especially with the volume of traffic that uses it. One intersection alone accounts for nearly an accident a day and the population growth on that intersection is just beginning.
      But live on in your paradise in the valley. No room to grow and who the fuck wants to live ion the swamp waiting for the next earthquake to isolate it from the world. That is if a tsunami doen’t wash you all into Cook Straight.

        But Viking2 it is apparent the trolls have A) had their instructions on this issue and B) discouraged from deviating or perhaps knowing the difference in roads. NZTS is responsible for national highways and local roads are the responsibility on local bodies who have been neglecting them just like local infrastructure for decades.
        Problems are compounded for both when NZTS so often have attempt to solve regional problems more than once before they get it right. Doubtless many have examples where major work has been carried out several times on highways within local body boundaries that also impacts on local roadworks. Now also made more expensive and complicated by yet more bike lanes adding to motorists frustrations. Not to mention yet another “major” revamp being needed.

    The amount of traffic going north of Auckland is massive and constantly growing on an old very slow road. CoL have stated they don’t support expanding 4 lanes past Warkworth

I heard this on NewstalkZB, but it’s in the Herald, too. Supermarkets report that Kiwis are bulk-buying bin liners – replacing plastic with plastic – after the ‘single use’ plastic bag ban….

Kiwi shoppers concerned about the looming eradication of plastic supermarket bags are bulk-buying more plastic to line their rubbish bins.

Some supermarkets are reporting a spike in sales of packaged bin liners and are now trying to encourage more eco-friendly alternatives like newspapers so consumers are not simply replacing plastic with plastic.

      I actually phoned two plastic bag suppliers in New Zealand a few months ago with the suggestion that they print a line of bags with “This is a plastic bag – get OVER it.”
      
      I was told by both companies that a) the cost of setting up world be horrendous, and b) they would not support the idea because they found the message a bit too edgy.
      
      I said I would buy them and sell them on TradeMe without mentioning their name…. but they refused. I honestly think they were scared of repercussions. I really think they both freaked out at the idea of doing anything anti-green and having it traced back to them!
      
      Anyway…. here’s my suggestion. On one side ‘This is a plastic bag – get OVER it’ and on the other side ‘Very USEFUL for:’ and a bullet point list of all the uses like smelly rubbish, pet poo, wet swimming togs etc etc

    Continues their propensity to rip off their customers.
    They were supply bags free with the online shopping and are now charging for the.
    So when you get you meat mixed with your soap powders and detergents etc fee free to whinge like as hard as you can go.
    
    Still you can get their delivery guys to wait while you return the bags. That would be certain to piss off the delivery guys.
    
    Ask the checkout girls what they think. Not many like it and they also say that checking takes a lot longer.
    It raises a health and Safety issue as well. Wait till we have a decent epidemic and see if they want your dirty stinking unclean, unwashed bags at the checkout.

While it is sad and far to young for Penny Bright to have died you really have to say the Media’s portraying of her with headlines of Penny Bright follows in the steps of Nelson Mandela when she is farewelled tomorrow in Aucklanders and it will be a celebratration of what she did for Auckland is a triffle far fetched. There have been lots of people that have contributed to Auckland over the years in more ways than Penny ever has and the media never posted articles to portray the good they have done, so can anyone please advise what Penny actually achieved for Auckland that made Auckland a better place.

        I would argue that the trailer trash in our society, of whatever hue, get a disproportionate amount of the funding in an effort to correct their poor lifestyle and parenting skills in an effort to get them over the line, to ensure the next generation of trailer trash get a better than even opportunity of survival to rinse and repeat.

Because the problem lies elsewhere, Cultural Marxism might not be causing these babies to willingly commit suicide, mikenmildagain, but as a catch-all and rather trendy term it conveniently covers the accusation of racism being cast indiscriminately upon an entire profession.

  Ask the medical staff what criteria they apply for a premature baby DNR. I think you’ll find that skin colour is not on the list but the severity of deformation is, the delay in presenting for the birth and so on.
  
  Another stat to track down is the cost per baby per race, although once again, I doubt you’ll find it as all the medical staff I have talked with have no interest in race full stop.

      When you have a person with a personality disorder that they are struggling with….. Clayton had already showed he could have bad behavours and reactions to events….. Is in a destructive ‘come here I love you, have sex with me, I hate you, go away, come here I love you, have sex with me, I hate you, go away’ relationship. This manipulates Oxytocin, brain chemistry and memory creation in males. Some females do this to manipulate males to get what they want, to control the male. The evidence shows Sophie did it by accident rather than intentionaly. Making a mistake in brain chemistry altering drug use is dangerous.
      
      Sophie and Clayton are both contributors to events but the only thing that made it happen was the medication mistake.
      Sophie should not have engaged in behavour that manipulates emotion.
      Clayton has something wrong with him and exposed himself as being unsafe in the community.

        I didn’t blame her. The relationship was the same as a manipulative one but her diary shows it wasn’t intentional. That version of bad relationship issues is well known to cause mental health driven violence by men at the end of relationships. It’s an old wives tale, not to string men along. Eventually you’ll do it to the wrong man.
        
        It’s a combination of things.
        Medication error, bad relationship type, Claytons personality disorder.
        
        If the medical error didn’t happen then she might be alive.
        If females were taught to recognise that relationship type and avoid it then she might be alive.
        If males were taught that we do have this chemical process that can cause problems then she might be alive.
        If Clayton at past events of violence, or when he presented to the doctor got better help then she might be alive.
        
        We know he did it. It’s to late now.
        
        I’m interested in why. How to have less events like it in the future.
        
        Summary. Jacks fault. Clayton was raised by society and Jack (society) can hate the past killer, Clayon, or a future killer, but hate won’t prevent that future killer.
        
        You can’t know the truth unless your willing to be brutally honest including what the victim did, or whoever else played a part.

    What disturbed me, and many other people, was the way that the “Sensible Sentencing Trust” and certain sections of the media—the Herald and NewstalkZB especially—immediately vilified the victim. It wasn’t simply a kneejerk reaction, it carried on for months, and months.
    
    People get killed in NZ quite regularly and I could point to lots of cases where justice was probably not done but unfortunately imperfect systems give imperfect results and that’s just the way it is whether you or I like it or not.
    
    Fair comment, my friend. This case was different, however: I had never heard such organized and comprehensive ridiculing and damnation of a victim of a crime before. Not in this country.
    
    Sometimes you have to move on and let things go.
    
    I agree. I rarely talk about this terrible case any more—but the publication of a piece praising the organization that led that terrible campaign was a provocation I could not ignore.

An example of ignorant, biased reporting at the Hooerald today, in an article asserting that “babies born close to death are less likely to get life-saving treatment if they’re Maori, Pacific or Indian.”

This report either wilfully, or ignorantly, twists a technical term of statistics to emotionally charge an article with an anti-white racist spin. Shame on the NZ Herald.

First, what the Hooerald says.

The article reports that resuscitation was tried on 92 per cent of Maori babies, 89 per cent of Pacific, and 86 per cent of Indian. That compared to 95 per cent for “other”, mostly pakeha (European) and non-Indian Asians. (As a side issue, note the difference between Maori and white babies – three percentage points; and the difference between Indian and Maori babies – six percentage points.)

The report says:

The divides were outlined in a report to Health Minister David Clark, by the Perinatal and Maternal Mortality Review Committee, a taxpayer-funded watchdog tasked with reviewing deaths of babies and mothers.

“Maori, Pacific and Indian live born babies were statistically significantly less likely to have an attempt at resuscitation,” the committee stated.

“Institutional bias or implicit biases are likely to play at least some part.”

The Herald reporter has confused “statistical significance” with the meaning typical tabloid reporters give to the word “significant”.

Here is a borrowed definition of the word as it applies to statistics:

“In principle, a statistically significant result (usually a difference) is a result that’s not attributed to chance.

“More technically, it means that if the Null Hypothesis is true (which means there really is no difference), there’s a low probability of getting a result that large or larger.

All of this is way above the head of the Hooerald scribbler. He sees the word “significant” and thinks this applies to the difference of a few percentage points in the result.

The Hooerald report includes headings saying “shock finding” and “racism in healthcare”.

This is a journalistic beat-up, and a nasty one.

An article on Stuff highlights the difficulties Maori in Australia can have if they aren’t Australian citizens.

It seems one hurdle is the cost of a family applying for citizenship – about $10,000 for a family of four.

There ought to be some means of setting up a fund, or money club, to help Maori (and other NZ’ers who need help) to apply for citizenship then re-pay. This would enable them to tap into the education and other help available for Australian citizens.

It wouldn’t cost a huge amount. Ngai Tahu and Waikato Maori, from their tax-free business earnings could easily put up a million dollars each to help to launch the fund, which would become self-supporting. Perhaps NZ tribes could guarantee loans to their people in Australia.

For a struggling family of four, a ten-year loan at 3 per cent, with monthly repayment of capital and interest might mean payment of about $108 a month. The benefits would greatly outweigh this which would be the equivalent of payment of about $25 a week. It might be possible to get in temporary sick-payment coverage insurance in this for a another dollar or two a week.

(I hope my ancient maths aren’t too rusty!)

Do you honestly believe such people would be interested in “tapping into education needs?” Or that any local far now would be the least bit interested any who are so much more far now from the reservation?   Of course the MSM emphasised that she got fined ‘for driving too slow’. You had to dig deep to find that she was actually in the right hand lane.

    Do it all the time and yes there are right lane hoggers all the way from the tunnel. But State two isn’t exactly a right lane off ramp, more like the road splits with two lanes going to each of SH1 and SH2. And the same hoggers do it in the opposite direction where there is no opportunity to peel right.
    They would do it on any multi-lane road, it’s not a question of getting ready for the road going right.

      I heard a Pom on Wellington talkback once say he would drive in the right hand lane at 100kph, it being his his right. Why should he give way to speeding hoons.
      Was heading to the Hutt on a motorbike a couple of weeks later and there was an arsehole in the right lane doing about 75kph, I flashed him and then went between he and cars on the left. Stopped at Petone petrol station, he pulled in, started giving me a rev, and man he was a bereted Pom with a real attitude.
      He told me he was handing my number into the gendarmerie and all the usual shit, then threatened to run me over, but drove off like a f/wit wimp.
      Always wondered if he was the prick on radio that morning.

How about we make a ledger, 2 lists (as an economic exercise)
Left side of the page
All thing subject to tax (levies etc),with the tax /levies removed. ie the raw economy
On the right, all the things the govt. spends money on.
Go through the right hand list and remove ALL non essential /waistful spending.
Then go through all the “like to haves” and cross them out too.
Left with “essentials”
Now add GST to the left column
Then start adding income tax until the columns balance.
Here is what the govt. should do (balance the books)
Add a small % for unforeseen things and payment of current debt and future expansion.
The economy would explode in growth.
Jobs not welfare would be and should be the centre of attention in ALL economies

Wuerl has been under fire since the release in August of a U.S. Grand Jury report on sexual abuse found evidence that at least 1,000 people, mostly children, had been sexually abused by some 300 clergymen over the course of 70 years. The report covered six diocese in Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh when it was led by Wuerl.

Pakistan has formally asked the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance, the fund said on Thursday, amid concerns over its ability to meet its external debt obligations as the country battles dwindling foreign currency reserves.

Cindy is changing the law so she can demand fuel companies have to open their books for the government to assess whether they are price gouging. Either the private fuel companies will happily comply as it is government taxes gouging buyers of fuel, not they, or the fuel companies will fight this tooth and nail through the courts. Forcing private companies to prove to Cindy they are not making too much profit. That’s not going to go down well with the markets!!

  @ waikatogirl it has alreay been reported that the oil companies are not just happy to participate but are very keen for the COL to get on with a review. However this is just another of the silly little girls announcements that only serves as a diversion. The legislation will now be put through under urgency having waited a year. Also the review process will take at least a year before any measures in the new law can be applied. If the legislation drafted is up to their usual standard it is unlikely there will be any “adjustments” before late 2019 or even early 2020.
  Standard MO stalling tactics from Labour that are most likely needed because A) the worst is yet to come for fuel price increases and B) they can not afford to even consider the roll back of their increases.
