Captain Mainwaring

I’ve defended Simon Bridges through thick and thin because I thought there was nobody better for the job and the CoL was busy tearing themselves apart without any need for help from the opposition.
But yesterday I went right off him when he stumbled and mumbled and then suggested that there was something ‘embarrassing’ about Jami-Lee Ross’s illness.
At a time when Jami-Lee is in a very difficult space this is the last thing the poor bugger needs.
Bridges has proved himself un-Prime Ministerial. The rest of his caucus would have had their heads in their hands and I can hear Judith out in the back shed sharpening the knives.
He must go, and soon.

  I don’t think anyone sees him as PM material.
  
  He’s more like the caretaker of a holiday park during the winter months.
  
  National are having a wee rest after 9 pretty hard years with the GFC and earthquakes and all the fix ups after Auntie Helen. They don’t need top shelf management at the moment just someone who sweeps the floor, turns off the lights and keeps the possums from shitting in the water tank.
  
  In about a year from now they can start preparing for 2020. Bye Simon, excellent job pruning the roses.

  He is proving himself to be as ineffectual as Andrew Little, but in defence of Little he exposed his ability to get angry…the self-exposure of Bridges is that of a bumbler and a ham-fisted manager of people. He has to go as leader as soon as possible to allow the Nats to re-build. I think he may well make an adequate Cabinet Minister and good luck to him in that pursuit.

    Technically, that is opinion rather than ‘truth’. I haven’t up or down ticked because there are some things Capt said that I agree with and others I don’t.
    
    For me Bridges has been inconsistent. Some good performances, and others quite poor. I agree he’ll need to lift his game considerably if he’s to lead our country.

        Unsure. A good leader helps liberate the combined strengths in his/her team and National have plenty of depth (relative to the shambolic Government).
        
        Collins has mongrel which can be harnessed. Bishop is smart, and hard working. Smith (and I’m still getting over his ETS treasury) is articulate, speaking amazingly well against the waka bill. Adams & Wong are solid performers.
        
        So can he harness all this talent, or will he be overtaken by it?
        
        I really don’t know.

  If you want the COL by default don’t support the Opposition.
  
  Time to join the National Party to rise up against this COL. There one can say what you like without giving comfort to the enemy. We are now battling a dishonest bullying govt backed up by idolising media. They are an economic disaster and we must aim to remove them. We don’t have to like the present National Party Leader but we need to be seen to dislike the COL visibly more.

    I’ve been very critical of the ‘Opposition’ and Soimun for a long time now – but I have to agree that you make a good point.
    
    A National led government might fluff around and Bridges would probably obfuscate in that ineffectual squinty way that he has…. but at least they wouldn’t actually work towards actively destroying our country. Would they? I mean… they wouldn’t be as bad, surely?

  Mark Mitchell on ZB Breakfast just now (panelist with Labour’s Stuart Nash) reckoned that comment was made in relation to politicians lives being public and because their lives are not private and plastered all over the media it could be “embarrassing” for JLR (or anyone for that matter) to have to explain to the whole of NZ that they are taking leave to deal with personal matters.
  
  Mitchell said that JLR is a very proud person who wouldn’t like to be sharing his personal situation with “everyone” etc.
  
  Whilst perhaps Bridges could have avoided using that term, in the context of what Mitchell is saying it does kind of make some sort of sense.
  
  Some of you guys are doing not only a dis-service to Bridges (by “doing a WO” and looking for every opportunity to criticise him), but you are also doing a dis-service to JLR by keeping his personal issues in the spotlight. It was bad enough seeing the NZH doing that last night by making this issue seem greater than it is (and alluding to JLR being the leaker at the same time)!

    So, Bridges let slip an adjective the contextual meaning of which has confused absolutely everyone because they have no idea what he was actually alluding to and the world is coming to an end as far as his leadership is concerned.
    
    On the other hand, the Prime Minister is perplexed by the acronym “GDP” when asked, fudges an answer to hide her ignorance, later says that she thought she was being asked about Crown Accounts which were not even due and then, in parliament, again misleads by accusing the interviewer of asking the wrong question to her answer and this is just a minor slip but who cares, the photographers are out in force!
    As RWC points out, maybe some people, Duncan Garner in particular, might be wise to get their priorities right.

        The problem is not that Mr Ross is unwell, but that Bridges considers it embarrassing.
        
        So I suppose he threw himself under the bus. Nor is this his first faux pas. National leaders don’t do fauses pas.
        
        As for the Government’s perceived mishandling of their job. Any competent Opposition Leader would be expected to hammer away at those weaknesses, and that doesn’t necessarily need to be the current incumbent.

        I’ve seen this written many times here about the Peters appointed government and I know it sounds cute and clever, but its not the way for a competent opposition party to behave in a Westminster democracy.
        
        Bear in mind that ‘making mistakes’ in this case means actually destroying a country’s industries, its social cohesion and its foreign relations.
        
        This is not a time to be cute. This is a time when coherent and well-structured opposition is needed in order to communicate to the silent majority that there is hope and a plan to get this country out of the shit that Adern & Co are creating.
        
        So far, nothing like this has been articulated by this utterly useless man.

  National have a duty to the country to replace him as soon as possible. We need a viable alternative to the three headed hydra. Loyalty to the leader is all very well but outside some black swan event Bridges will never be PM, he is simply not up to the role.

  But the party faithful don’t want a winner! They want a suitably progressive leader who won’t challenge the status quo. The National party is in what is looking like terminal decline – can anyone seriously watch simple Soimon in action and say with any honesty – “he is the best we’ve got”.
  
  He thinks it’s an insult to call the SLG “Trumplike”, I’d take Trump every day of the week and the booming economy he’s delivered over anyone ANYONE currently in Pariliament.
  
  Soimon is the Cunliffe appointment.
  
  The answer is an unpalatable (to the dead wood) clean out of the mediocre dead wood in National. Only one person will do that and all the dead wood ain’t going to vote for her.

    Im just back from a couple of weeks in the US. One of my Uber rides was listening to Fox News, and came out with the interesting “fact” (a study had been undertaken apparently) that Soros has contributed $USD 25oM (yes, million) to groups who seek to oppose Trump / Kavanaugh.
    
    No idea if its true, and even if its 10% of that, wholly fuck. That kind of money buys a lot of vocal opposition.

        The trouble is you are believing what the Democrat spin is.
        
        To put it simply Kavanaugh did not claim not to drink, he has in fact admitted that he drank quite a lot of beer, what he did claim was that he never had drunken blackouts or passed out from drinking. That was an allegation made about him which he denied. He did say that he drank and sometimes would fall asleep as a result. That is different than drunken blackouts.
        
        So no lying about what he did as a student about 35 years ago. Read his testimony instead of relying on the Democrat journolistas.
        
        What is far more interesting is the pretty clear evidence that Ford is a blatant liar and has been coached by her lawyers to perjure herself. She said under oath that she had never coached or trained or assisted anyone with a polygraph test before. The Senate committee has a letter from an ex boyfriend in the 1990’s who says she did exactly that with a named friend. That named friend is now an FBI agent and is also believed to have given evidence.
        
        Plus the evidence about the second front door being the trigger for the remembrance about Kavanaugh. Said to be 2012, but the permit was 2008 and would lapse after 180 days – and the second door was for a separate business being run at the address.
        
        Prof Ford and your lawyers, get ready for the perjury shit train. Senator Feinstein, what will you do if Ford turns states evidence and implicates you and your colleagues in the perversion of justice and perjury ?

While the media approach to Winston’s “immigrant and refugee declaration of acceptance and promise to adhere to New Zealand values” is so far about what those values might be, another consideration of this issue should tell us: What will constitute an offence, and what will Winston expect to happen to an offender?

Can you send a refugee back to where they came from, if they are here to avoid persecution or even threat of death?
Since it may be an unreasonable punishment – according to the very values they may have been asked to adhere to – will one offence doom them or will Winston also have a three strikes system to match our current values in treating the most serious of crimes?

If Winston new bill is to be considered at all, let him spell out exactly what he thinks the result should be … so that may be considered against what people think to be New Zealand values.

A death on Tongariro Alpine Crossing

His body was found by searchers this morning and there was a karakia on Mangatepopo Rd this afternoon.

A rāhui sets a temporary prohibition around the area where someone has died and limits access for that period.

The Department of Conservation explained it acknowledged the death and was a way to express sympathy to the whānau of the deceased; it ensured that safety mechanisms were in place; and provided time for tapu (sacredness) to dissipate following the death.

I’ve not previously heard of a rāhui. Given the tragic proportion of Maori children dying as a result of abuse I would have expect rāhui to be more commonly reported.

        It’s a work in progress. More remains but an enormous amount has been achieved. They seem to have succeeded in getting the work done in order of importance. No one will ever agree on those priorities but at least decisions were made. Commercial realities may defer potential projects until developers can be sure about success. The future return of many people must still be doubtful. Rebuilding will still be underway 10 years hence.
        Christchurch just gets slowly better. It probably cannot go any faster.

If landlords continue to exit the business, the Accommodation Supplement will fall of course. The cost of emergency motels and social housing will increase. Also medical costs as families bunk up together in overcrowded conditions. It is an opposite reaction but not an equal one.

I do wonder if anyone is doing the real sums here, or just cherrypicking the bits they like the look of.

Petrol costs will soon be $3.00 a litre. NZs have to pay the $1,300,000,000 in accordance with the so called Paris global warming accord. Many countries who have read the small print are baling out. Not NZ . For some reason or other . Oh yes . Political ideology, leading the charge Ardern/Peters/ Far left Lunatic Greens Party. What a bloody indictment of such a pack of losers and no hopers leading the good ship NZ onto the rocks. Would have thought the well being of our NZ Teachers and Police etc,etc quality of life was a lot more important than throwing money at so called Paris Accord global warming claptrap, or same in Pacific Islands.   James Shaw is the first climate change minister who thinks that the government can seriously reduce emissions. But the only way he can really do that is by electrifying transport. So tax petrol cars heavily, especially old ones, and subsidise electric vehicles. Of course that would be regressive. I now see many electric vehicles in Thorndon. Not so many in Lower Hutt.
  
  It will be interesting to see what he comes up with. Heavily taxing cars with petrol at $2.50 would be poisonous. And if you just give large rebates for electric cars, it costs a packet but is still regressive.

Without informing the staff involved of cameras and listening devices, NZ Post have been caught out spying on their delivery staff with camera and listening devices in their cute little delivery vehicles. NZ Post had the ability to watch and also listen to conversations between the postie with the public but also private phone calls by their employees. NZP used the old excuse that monitoring was a health and safety issue. You would think NZP would have consulted their lawyers before going for this monitoring option.

  I watched a bit of the project last night and brief interview with Art Green. Art raised the issue of Tall Poppy Syndrome.
  I have noticed how this has come back in the last 12 months. Lefties have crawled out from their hiding places and are abusing the shit out of anyone trying to make something of their lives. I thought NZ had become a bit more comfortable with success but the Coalition Government and Peters in particular have stirred up some unpleasant sentiments. I am surprised to hear the Teacher’s Union leaders call the them Professionals.
Must be poor teachers because any other real Profession has Professional Standards.
In a Profession you are employed by application and the best one who fits the requirements gets an offer.
Their futures are governed by their quality of work, interaction both with other staff, Managers, and overall employers.
Regular performance appraisals are done by the Employer.
Salaries are determined according to performance.
How can a Union led group of people be left to be responsible for the performance of their children when all salaries are determined by the Unions in accordance by how many years Teachers have been working ?
Not by performance – which of course means that the poorest of teachers get the same terms and condition and salaries as the many good teachers.
So how can it be called a Profession ?

p.s. see Doctors Union leader gets $980,000 a year, plus expenses, and office expense of ($400,000).

  Teachers have chosen to be represented by Trades Unions, and they deserve no more respect or remuneration than other union members.

The Times reported that much of that fortune came to Trump because he helped his parents evade taxes, setting up a fake corporation with his siblings to disguise millions of dollars in gifts from their parents.

      Totally untrue. We disclose both – refer to our annual review and the financial statements filed with the registrar of incorporated societies. In fact, our financial statements have more information about our revenue and expenses than provided by any political party.
      
      And yes, like Greenpeace and other lobby groups, we respect the privacy of our donors, but some are quite public about their support and we welcome that.
      
      Our current staff and board have, or have had, affiliations with National, Labour (a current student intern is a Labour Party member – and our Chairman was once the Press Secretary to a Labour Party Leader), Act, Greens, and the Conservatives. Our previous communications coordinator was hired out of NZ First.
      
      While we have some more work to do, we are reasonably happy with the political diversity we have within the organisation.

    The uniform tax code in USA runs to about 75000 pages of law. On average over every man woman and child USAins spend 30 hours and $500 to file tax returns each year.

The Jumbo (Boeing 747) is 50 years old.

I still recall being very excited about my first flight in this aircraft, way back in the 1970’s. 40 years later and I daren’t count the number of hours I spent cooped up in these things – from the original (upstairs was tiny!), the SP, the ‘mega-top’, and the 400 series.

Long haul these days is in the A380 or A350 or 777 and it’s a lot more comfortable.

If this were really the case, why would he want to make de-classified material, as well as text and email communications between key F.B.I. investigators, public?
He knows the information will reveal collusion between government agencies and the Democrats, in an attempt to frame a sitting U.S. president.   Why would a judicial appointment at the top appellate level impact upon whether to conduct an investigation and prosecution of treasonous activities? It’s not even something likely to get to the Supreme Court, which is focused on constitutional issues and matters of legal principle.

The clearest leading indicator or reduced birthrate is increased personal wealth, not socialism re-distributing a shrinking pie a-la Soviet era, but real wealth creation delivered by free enterprise that is enabled by structured capitalism.

I notice there are a few critical comments about Bridges above, what I want to know is who is the answer for National, who will win us the next election?. The minute Bridges was elected people like Garner were undermining him, by goading Judith when she was on his show and also making snide comments after Bridges had appeared. Do we really want to go down the Labour path, were we change leaders every few years?. I’m not prepared to put up with a Ardern led government for multiple terms. So in my view we need to identify the leader who has the best chance of winning, and get in behind them, even if that is Simon.

We had this debate about Nationals leader when Bil English resigned.
A lot of people like Judith Collins because she is tough. But a lot of people don’t like her.

Strong National supporters will support anyone, but National has to appeal to the centre if it wants to govern alone. (MMP)

  It is predicted to be classified as a “rare cancer” in Australia by 2022, when it should drop to less than six cases per 100,000 people.
  
  The prostate cancer reduction rate there is much slower.
  
  The current rates in Australia:
  – Females; 7 case for every 100,000 people
  – Males; 119 cases for every 100,000 people
  
  Men are, apparently, worth less. A lot less.

      It’s part of it. Public funding for cervical cancer research has exceeded that of prostate cancer research for several decades now.
      
      Another factor is age. Men tend to die from prostate cancer quite a bit older than do women of cervical cancer. Don’t have those stats to hand, but its by quite a few years.

        Cervical is caused by the transmission of a virus. That virus can be defeated by a vaccine.
        
        Nobody knows what causes prostate cancer. It’s hard to prevent a disease when you don’t even know what causes it. Depending on its exact cause, there might not even be a means to prevent it.
        
        That’s not a case of bias. It’s just biological reality.

        You’ve asserted that public funding for cervical cancer research exceeds that of prostate cancer research but you haven’t provided a citation. If you can provide evidence for your assertion then I’d be very interested to see it.
        
        Are you sure you’re not thinking about breast cancer? It receives a significant amount of funding because it has a high prevalence and a high rate of mortality (both are higher than the corresponding rates for prostate cancer).

        No not thinking of breast cancer. I can’t find that spend analysis. It’s possible I had it across my desk when I worked in the sector 5 years ago.
        
        I do have a long-time ob-gyn friend who’s been practicing here and in the UK for 30+ years. His view is that we spend significantly more, and unjustifiably more by outcome, on woman’s health than we do men’s health. Part of the disparity is age-related (ref above), and part of due to ‘all things woman’ being prioritised.

    The key to clearing up Cervical Cancer has been the HPV vaccine. – as most (nearly all) cervical cancers develop from infection by some Human Papilloma Viruses.
    
    Prostate Cancer seems more complicated…. doesn’t seem to result from a viral infection.

        But, as I said, it’s not as simple as the simple-minded imagine. You would need to calculate the BCR for the expenditure on each type of cancer versus the incidence. It is not necessarily the case that spending 17 times more on prostate cancer research would result in the incidence of that type of cancer reducing to the same rate as that of cervical cancer, or even at all.
        You seem to have made the childish assumption that the more is spent on something, the better the results. On that basis, you should be applauding the Greens’ policy for a massive increase in welfare benefits.

I just think one disease that has 17x prevalence relative to another should get re-prioritised.     Immigrants are almost exclusively of working age. Children born to those immigrants (i.e. 2nd generations) will be classed as “Irish”.
    
    Few of the 1st generation will have been in Ireland long enough to reach pension age.
    
    If you compared working age immigrants with working age Irishmen I expect the picture would be very different.
    
    This carefully calculated and phrased insult to the Irish is the kind of bullshit that can get you a Nike promotions contract if you stick at it.

      The UK study controlled for all those variables, and still found that the migrants were doing better. I’m sure the US has had the same experience with its successive waves of immigration.   The two aren’t necessarily inconsistent, starboard. Trump may well be all those things, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t also largely responsible for an economic resurgence in his country that has surpassed all expectations. America may be in a moral decline, but not necessarily a fiscal one, and in any event, one person’s moral decline is likely to be another’s return to sanity. It’s the same with Kavanaugh; he doesn’t sound like the best lawyer in town, and to be frank, he comes across as a bit of a drongo, but that is irrelevant if he delivers the results. In an increasingly complex world, it is hard to find integrity and competence in the same person, and certainly where you are at the sharp end of the chisel, with the Presidency and the Supreme Court both expected to deliver partisan outcomes, it is well nigh impossible. Hence the move away from globalism and liberalism. It’s just too hard.
