The NZ Herald website – and by association the organization – clearly identifies its editorial bias by headlining the WaPo’s response to Trump’s speech, 3 hours after the US President delivered his address to the nation.

Lead article? Like the average Kiwi would even give a shit.

I put it to you that the NZH either has twelve year olds cut and pasting, or they are genuinely partisan, because this was clearly important to them to get this out there

The first ‘fact check’ negates the need to read further – and it’s a long, long, stupid list.

But here it is anyway – I abbreviate;

1: ‘The first misleading statement… came in the first sentence… a security crisis at the southern border… even though the number of people crossing illegally is at 20 year lows’

Well let me rebut the WaPo / NZH’s ‘fact check’ which is actually only an observation, on a statement which is only misleading if you cannot think logically.

It’s all a matter of perspective. Is it ‘misleading’ to intimate that 1.2 million down to 400,000 is still a crisis?

It is a crisis because it means the border is porous. If your cancer tumour has reduced by 2/3rds you still have a cancerous tumour. Which is a crisis. So, the WaPo is splitting hairs, not checking facts at all.

2: The fact ‘most illegal drugs seized are found at legal entry points, not the border’, is also meaningless because those are the drugs they… know about. IOW, the drugs they found. The drugs that cross the US / Mexico border, and are not found can’t be measured.

So it’s just stupid.

On and on the article goes.

The ‘fact checking’ is actually a list of pedantic critiques put together by a bunch of outraged spluttering buffoons who would have been sharpening their pencils of hatred before the President even opened his mouth.

      If you read even MSM reports carefully you will see a lot of Bangladeshis, Afghans, Syrians, Turkish and Africans among those arrested while crossing illegally. That means there is a lot more that are getting past undetected.
      
      Because the US’ southern border is porous, and the Dems are cynically welcoming of more Dem voters, and the people smugglers are smart businessmen — a well known route has been created. Possibility of unlimited chain migration has made the US a prized destination.
      
      Unfortunately politically correct data gathering and reporting from Government agencies means such detailed ethnically analysed statistics will never be made public.

        I have seen comments like this many times at this blogsite. You (and anyone else who believes this) are either ignorant, or mischievous, or perhaps both.
        
        Setting aside felony disenfranchisement (which varies from state to state), the requirements for voting in US federal elections are—
        
        “You are eligible to vote in federal elections if:
        You are a U.S. citizen (either by birth or naturalization)
        You meet your state’s residency requirements
        You are [an] 18 year old. (Some states allow 17-year-olds to vote in primaries or register to vote if they will be 18 before the general election).”

      Why do the stupid Democrats go mad about an apparent reduction in airport security with the Govt. closure but in the next breath say boarders are immoral?
      Why have the top Dems changed their minds from a couple of years ago, about a boarder wall/security on the Mexican boarder –all the speeches by Obama, Schumer, Pelosi et al are out there for all to see.
      Trump will get his wall or an equivalent –the Democrats are cracking already because they know that outside of DC the majority of the voters want it (that majority includes a high percentage of Democrats).

  Leading the charge was the taxpayer funded TVNZ News with 263 so called staff reporting the news. Yes it was Peters and his selected band of ner’do wells Ardern and far left lunatic Green demanding that NZ sign the 24 Islamic Federations Generated UN Migration Compact.
  A decision by Peters and his selected gang of also rans that will affect every man woman and child in NZ. Yet our main news outlets either played it down ,or even decided to ignore it.
  Seems our NZ pack of so called Mainstream Media would rather print fake news generated by CNN and their ilk of what might he happening in USA, rather that tell the truth of what in fact will happen in NZ any time soon.

  I think they make a big mistake with these lists. Firstly, Trump-haters love them but so what? Trump fans won’t bother reading. Those in the middle might, but to call out Trump for exaggerating numbers of illegals and saying it’s ‘only’ 400, 000 is a big own goal. Mr Hooton is not wrong. All those working groups and experts are now starting to report back. All with their own, usually narrowly focused, POV. Somehow the government is going to have to cobble together a coherent strategy that meets and – rather importantly – funds plenty of the recommendations their handpicked experts came up with. All within their announced policies of course.

Kindness is not going to cut it as the chief policy driver.

    Yes it is pathetic. Unfortunately there are not many votes in mental health. Not like “free” tertiary education.
    
    I have had much to do with mental health services in Wellington in relation to a family member. Their business revolves around stopping suicide where they can, using medication, and getting the person out the door again. The support services are an illusion. Promised but they never appear. Next to no psychologists or counsellors. No trained workforce. The support workers who do exist are over stretched and paid less than $20 per hour.
    
    I could go on. 10 percent of the cost of “free” tertiary education could have made a big difference.

        I am quite sure some non-P users were evicted from state housing. This would be because of a breach of tenancy. The tenant may not have used P in the home but allowed other residents or visitors to do so, resulting in the contamination standards at the time being exceeded.

I often wonder what NZ Inc would look like had the GFC and Christchurch not happened.

I remember posting way back that I thought these two events (plus the titanic mess left behind by Clarke / Cullen) would give Key, with his massive political capital, the excuse a true centre right Government would need to address the awful social problems we increasingly still have.

Just one thing he could have done was to limit the DPB to first child only. Not enough money. The vast majority of kiwis would have gone with it, understood and it would be entrenched.

But no. Roger Douglas saw his opportunity and acted swiftly, NZ would be completely broken by now had he not.

Ah well.

They do this to harvest the DPB and the women and kids have a miserable existence hence NZ leading the world in domestic abuse.       Good point Maggy. The COL are doing their bit to reduce down time by letting them do their yoga classes at home. The COL have changed the law so that the mothers don’t have to name the father. The reason for this is that it shows that hundreds of children have the same Dad which draws attention to a problem.

Duggledog – The philosopher Wittgenstein was talking to a person who mocked people who used to believe that the earth was round. Wittgenstein asked “But what would the world look like were it not round?”

I always thought this was just a witty mind-experiment, but actually he cut to the heat of confirmation bias. Which is why Wittgenstein was a genius, opposed to most of us who read stuff and filters out about 95% of anything we disagree with.

I do so because I suffer from confirmation bias.
But what if I didn’t? What would my world look like?

About that: I’ve been mulling over the consistent face of the press recently. In the USA it appears that the press is overwhelmingly ‘anti-Trump’, yet here in New Zealand it is overwhelmingly ‘Pro-Jacinda’.

We can point to ‘left-wing bias’ and feel ‘justifiable’ outrage, perhaps. However, studies into confirmation bias have shown that trying to illustrate how someone’s view is wrong – even with unassailable evidence – merely entrenches the existing ‘confirmation bias’.

So critiquing the press for being “[insert bias]” is pointless, because you are only helping to confirm their prejudice by doing so.

The research-proven way to shake people out of a confirmation bias is not to try to show them ‘the error of their ways’. You just end up more entrenched in bias on each side.

The proper way to tackle another’s confirmation bias, (and I’d argue to be a good citizen, journalist etc.) It is to ask them to consider an opposite view.

And the world would look like – well what it looks like today, I suppose – flat… or spherical, merely according to one’s bias.

The West’s security concerns surrounding Huawei, and fellow Chinese telecoms equipment firm ZTE Corp … center around China’s National Intelligence Law. Approved in 2017, the law states that Chinese “organisations and citizens shall, in accordance with the law, support, cooperate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work.”

Ewan Lawson, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London, said the arrests in Poland could bolster Western concerns. “It does point at the sort of connections that may exist between the state intelligence enterprise and private Chinese companies,” he said.

On the face of this report, there’s no direct Huawei connection, but it’ll be interesting to see how this matter plays out.

“Tell Us About Your First Love?” by the Auckland Humanity Project came up on a facebook page with 20,000 likes. It’s a project where they go to different parts of Auckland and film people answering the question of the month , and includes a facebook page, graphics, photography, and website. But it doesn’t say who the organisation is who is behind it. It is copyrighted to the Auckland Humanity Project who doesn’t appear to be it’s own legal entity. Google finds it is a project by social change ad agency. The project is a social change activation aimed at growing Auckland’s humanity, and says the client is ACC, which I assume is Auckland City Council as they have a number of other Auckland City Council projects on their site. And it doesn’t really make sense for an Accident company ACC. So my issue is that this covert nature of this Social Propaganda. That if Auckland Council or ACC or a business entity funds or a social change communications project, then it should always have a clear logo and the actual legal business name. And finally with Auckland Council projects, if you see something they have created, it should be easy to find out which department and how much was spent on it. Currently it’s not.

Spent last night in a hotel in a largish tourist town.
At 8pm a drumming “event” started up nearby.
It went on and on – loud, repetitive and dreary until well after midnight.
At check out a few others mentioned it – but it was assumed to be part of some cultural concert so was considered not a good idea to complain.
We tottered off down the main street to do some shopping and next minute, the drums started up again.
Around the corner of a very busy intersection came a “march” of drummers, aging hippies with dogs and dirty looking louts holding up banners one of which declared “We’re Fucked”.
A little boy, who looked about four, was having to wear a large black bowler hat while clinging on to a makeshift coffin.
It took us several minutes to work out what the march was about due to the signage being unclear. We were thinking something to do with zombies initially and then maybe anti-1080.
But no – it was complaining about the impending doom of climate change.
Way to go climate change extremists – annoy people by causing disturbance half the night then get up and hold up traffic.

Contrary to what you are suggesting, I think it is more likely that, rather than suffer the ignominy of having his vetoes overturned by two-thirds of both Houses (there are plenty of Republican senators up for re-election in 2020), he will fold.

      Although, in my opinion, he has committed several impeachable offences (Article 2, Section 4), he might well be removed via Amendment 25, Section 4, after having suffered some sort of breakdown.

But, as the above links show, it is an opinion shared by people far more knowledgeable about such matters than I.
        
        It would seem you have fallen into the trap of dismissing an opinion you don’t agree with as being “nothing”, thereby implying that only opinions you agree with are worth something. In effect, you have admitted to possessing a closed mind. Sad.

  ….and the video ad pre-roll at the top of the article was for Mobil oil. I also saw ads from various car companies. Stuff also runs sections on travel and motoring.
  
  Patrick Crewdson, Stuff Editor in Chief, states:
  
  “The classic Kiwi “she’ll be right” attitude won’t serve us here. Without urgent and comprehensive action, she won’t be right.It’s past time to agree that we need to act, quickly, to save the planet”.
  
  Shouldn’t Crewdson act by eliminating the motoring section and replace it with, say, cycling? Remove the travel section, and don’t accept any advertising from any industry directly linked to fossil fuel?
  
  This may mean job losses at Stuff, and the paper may not be able continue in present form due to reduced advertising revenue, however this is indeed a small price to pay in order to prevent “cataclysm”, surely.
  
  Or, is it just business as usual for the media?
  
  Many people in Taranki face uncertain economic futures due to the act of shutting down oil and gas exploration. Many of these people didn’t run a long series of articles urging us to act against the weather.
  
  I’d really like to know Stuff’s advertising policy. Heaven forbid “climate change”…. “falls victim to a shrugging complacency”
  
  Personally, I think the AGW story is overblown.

“The scientists say it’s too early to know why the sea has melted so early this year, but say it could be a natural event or a result of climate change.”
The real news here is that climate change isn’t natural, apparently.
