        Interestingly enough, in Ethiopia, there’s one large dam that is the main supplier of water for Addis Ababa, and there isn’t anything else like it. As a result AA has a generally better and more reliable water supply than really anywhere else in Ethiopia (there are a couple of places in the Blue Nile that are well served, for obvious reasons).
        
        That dam was built at considerable expense by the Italians in their brief period of colonial conquest in the late 1930’s. I would not wish to praise the Italian conquest of Ethiopia in any way, it was a gratuitous and nasty piece of conquest (they used poison gas for example) and it went against the dictates of the impotent a League of Nations, but one doubts that if they hadn’t build the dam, AA might never have had a decent water supply for much longer.
        
        FYI Britain tossed the Italians out of Ethiopia and Somaliland very early in WW2 before the rest of the Noth African campaign gained much impetus. The British were seriously outnumbered and mostly had somewhat inferior equipment, but were so superior to the Italians that they cleaned them out quite quickly. It wasn’t just to free Ethiopia of course, they wanted to remove a threat to their flank in Sudan and Egypt, but free Ethiopia they did. Restored Haile Selassie too.

      Yeah it’s funny how that part of the argument seems to be forgotten. When I visited Africa we had a butler from Zimbabwe he fled there to go to SA because of how bad it was in Zim. He is a man of colour (black as the ace of spades actually) and was worried about the decline of SA and felt that soon it would be just as bad. This was in 2007 and I think it’s getting pretty close to being there.
      
      The reality is apartheid whilst it seemed like the worst thing in the world to all those free spirited people lying on the couches drinking beer. For most blacks life has got worse. We don’t need to mention the whites as of course no one cares what happens to privileged white men and women do they.
      
      Africa is a beautiful area when looking at nature but an absolute abomination when you look at the humans that rule the various countries.
      
      I’m not an African by the way just a kiwi abroad when I went.

NZ Herald readers (of yesterday’s edition), in particular, will be aware that ‘The Atlantic’ magazine has published an article advocating the commencement, sooner rather than later, of impeachment proceedings against President Trump, aka the Huckster-in-Chief. Even if the subject matter is not to your taste, you will come away from this reading experience better informed about the process that “Individual-1” could well be subjected to later this year, or next.

I have set out some excerpts, below, to whet your appetite—

“Impeachment is a process, not an outcome, a rule-bound procedure for investigating a president, considering evidence, formulating charges, and deciding whether to continue on to trial.”

“The question that determines whether an act is impeachable, though, is whether it endangers American democracy. As a House Judiciary Committee staff report put it in 1974, in the midst of the Watergate investigation: ‘The purpose of impeachment is not personal punishment; its function is primarily to maintain constitutional government.’ Impeachable offenses, it found, included ‘undermining the integrity of office, disregard of constitutional duties and oath of office, arrogation of power, abuse of the governmental process, adverse impact on the system of government.’”

Yes, I could use a nom de plume and engage with everyone in the same, nasty, reactive, disrespectful way you do, but I choose not to.         What you are really saying, is that Kiwiblog should be an echo chamber that reflects *your* view of life, and that of people like you. Is that what you really want? If DPF were to remove everyone from this blog that you and people like you disagree with, its popularity would decline rather rapidly, I suspect – because it would be boring, just like your ADS is.
        
        Now, to your latest missive. I have commented on many subjects over the last five or six years, particularly about STV, including NZ politics. It is just that right now, Trump, Pelosi, and the partial shutdown, are huge news. I have followed US politics closely since the JFK assassination. I do not fantasise about Trump, or anyone else for that matter.
        
        Over the last 15 years, DPF has put up hundreds of posts to do with US politics, and the individual presidents since Bush 43. Does that make him an “absolute dimwit”? No, because his interests are demonstrably wide-ranging. Mine are, too – as I’m sure yours are – it’s just that you don’t know that.
        
        One of Kiwiblog’s best contributors, kiwi in america, whose posts are always eagerly anticipated, writes almost exclusively about US politics, for our edification. No-one here would consider him to be an “absolute dimwit”.
        
        You tell me to “[s]ort the shit out in [my] own political nest”. Ha! Do you seriously believe that you are convincing anyone to your point of view with your short, nasty, swipes at everyone you disagree with? I can tell you the answer to that; it’s no.
        
        So, TM, you really do need to take a good look at yourself. Do you really think everyone shares your hatred of the current government, and, if not, that they must be dimwits? And, if they don’t, that they should be shouted down by people like you until they just go away? You are a successful man (apparently), you have raised children who are successful. Don’t you think it rather beneath you to behave the way you do here? Would you express yourself the way you do under your real name? Of course, you wouldn’t.

Yet Schiff prepared and published a minority Congressional official report that blatantly lied about that – claiming that the FBI & DOJ were not informed until November. That is blatant lying to Congress and to the public, Perjury in effect. Maybe he should be impeached if he doesn’t have the decency and how can he serve as Intelligence Committee chairman when he has publicly shon that he is completely unreliable in regard to telling the truth.

        You are correct, but they are wrong. Yes it’s true China last year narrowly surpassed Australia as our largest single market. But our exports to Australia, the US and the EU far outstrip those to China. Our trade with China is commodity-based: milk powder and logs in the main. They represent a dead-end, and commodities that China would probably have bought without an FTA or kowtowing from us. Our trade with our western friends is not only far larger than with China but it is also based on a wider and far more sophisticated range of goods and services. That is where our future must lie if we are to increase our per capita productivity, which has been static for many years, and to prosper as a nation. We should be actively reducing our exposure to China.

Oh wow NZ First MP Derrick Ball has blamed National for a stupid law under there watch for the Deaths of the two brothers stealing a car and driving reckless even after the Police had called off their pursuit. NZ First want to grow up and have a good look at themselves and there policy as National could and should hold the same to all members of the Coalition by saying the housing crisis was caused by them for not passing a workable RMA which still right up to this minute as I am penning this is also stopping housing being built at the rate it is needed. So to blame others for something your Government could change because discipline and lack of respect for others and their property was the cause of these deaths and just like the cigarette tax that NZ First blamed for dairies being robbed and they would repeal that law if they came to power, well you have overseen to rises in the time you formed this Coalition and like most things you again have done Sweet Fanny Adam’s about it. Oh that’s right NZ Firsts motto promises are made to be broken.

97 percent of scientists believe humans cause climate change? Where did that figure come from?

The 97 per cent figure derives from a survey sent to 10,257 people with a self-interest in human-induced global warming who published “science” supported by taxpayer-funded research grants. Replies from 3146 respondents were whittled down to 77 self-appointed climate “scientists” of whom 75 were judged to agree that human-induced warming was taking place. The 97 per cent figure derives from a tribe with only 75 members. What were the criteria for rejecting 3069 respondents? There was no mention that 75 out of 3146 is 2.38 per cent. We did not hear that 2.38 per cent of climate scientists with a self-interest agreed that humans have played a significant role in changing climate and that they are recipients of some of the billions spent annually on climate research.

Another recent paper on the scientific consensus of human-induced climate change was a howler. Such papers can be published only in the sociology or environmental literature.

The paper claimed that published scientific papers showed there was a 97.1 per cent consensus that man had caused at least half of the 0.7C global warming since 1950.

How was this 97.1 per cent figure determined? By “inspection” of 11,944 published papers. Inspection is not rigorous scholarship. There was no critical reading and understanding derived from reading 11,944 papers. This was not possible as the study started in March 2012 and was published in mid-2013, hence only a cursory inspection was possible. What was inspected? By whom?

The methodology section of the publication gives the game away. “This letter was conceived as a ‘citizen science’ project by volunteers contributing to the Skeptical Science website (www.skepticalscience.com). In March 2012, we searched the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science for papers published from 1991-2011 using topic searches for ‘global warming’ or ‘global climate change’.”

This translates as: This study was a biased compilation of opinions from non-scientific, politically motivated volunteer activists who used a search engine for key words in 11,944 scientific papers, were unable to understand the scientific context of the use of “global warming” and “global climate change”, who rebadged themselves as “citizen scientists” to hide their activism and ignorance, who did not read the complete papers and were unable to evaluate critically the diversity of science published therein.

The conclusions were predictable because the methodology was not dispassionate and involved decisions by those who were not independent.

As part of a scathing critical analysis of this paper by real scientists, the original 11,944 papers were read and the readers came to a diametrically opposite conclusion. Of the 11,944 papers, only 41 explicitly stated that humans caused most of the warming since 1950 (0.3 per cent). Of the 11,944 climate “science” papers, 99.7 per cent did not say that carbon dioxide caused most of the global warming since 1950. It was less than 1 per cent and not one paper endorsed a man-made global warming catastrophe.

Political policy and environmental activism rely on this fraudulent 97 per cent consensus paid for by the taxpayer to rob the taxpayer further with subsidies for bird-and-bat-chomping wind turbines, polluting solar panels and handouts to those with sticky fingers in the international climate industry. It’s this alleged 97 per cent consensus that has changed our electricity from cheap and reliable to expensive and unreliable.

Activists with no skin in the game are setting the scene for economic suicide.

My reading between those lines is that Mr Barclay told his bosses that it was going to be KiwiFail and they didn’t like it up ’em.

It is possible that Mr Barclay was wrong in that case, as there is to be a miracle, according to the official Kiwibuild website as recently as today –

1000 homes will be built by June 2019 and a further 5000 the following year

      The dairy board came up with the idea of getting rid of surplus milk by making a dried biscuit and selling it to the shitholes of Africa. Trouble was they were far too nutritious for them to digest.

        That reminds me – we bought some kiwifruit last week, and the sticker says they had been imported from overseas (I can’t recall the country of origin now). Why is our country (one of the biggest growers and exporters of kiwifruit in the world) having to import kiwifruit from overseas to sell in our local market? Are growers so intent on making money that they sell all their goods overseas leaving the country to have to import fruit to sell to the public?

        The problem was that those milk biscuits were foul. They were hard, plastic in texture, pink or green in color, and virtually inedible. Lots of them were brought into schools as free samples for New Zealand kids, who rejected them almost completely.
        
        They’d be of some use as a method of low level torture, I guess, but that’s all.
        
        Another disastrous failure by Big Dairy. Not as catastrophic as their destruction of New Zealand’s fresh water infrastructure, but disastrous nonetheless.

        It is not only involved in the growing of kiwifruit here in NZ; it is the biggest company running the distribution and sale of kiwifruit grown elsewhere.

DHBs are preparing for more strikes, no not the one on the 28/9 of this month. It looks like they are going to rolling 3 day strikes to put pressure on DHBs. At the same time the Government is putting pressure on DHBs to stick to budget , OR ELSE! Seems DHBs and patients are getting squeezed in the middle.

OK.So you can afford an EV.
Not many people can and the whole idea around EV ‘s is really pandering to the UN and the climate change idiots.
Coming across like a greeny is not going to get you support from the majority of kiwis who are not going to move to EV’s.
And the suggestion that petrol driven cars get taxed more is infuriating.How are these EV’s paying their way towards roading?

  All sorts of road users contribute little or nothing towards their construction & maintenance by way of petrol excise tax. Pedestrians, cyclists, scooter users, joggers.

(Before your head explodes, let me just say that those guys exist to combat the MSM; to give their audience the facts. No fake news with them.) Also, I saw elsewhere that even FBI / DEA employees and uniformed police officers are now turning up at foodbanks (in New York City), to get food. The shutdown – 28 days completed in 90 minutes time, at 6.00 p.m. our time – is really hurting. People who are required to keep working, now have to borrow money for transport costs.
        
        If Individual-1 declares a state of emergency tomorrow morning (our time), the above will be the reason. As I said to you last Saturday night, people can’t afford to miss two pay checks; that’s when the proverbial starts to hit the fan. It looks like someone has finally got that through to Trump. I think this is a bad precedent. Locke was a threat to New Zealand, especially as an MP. His views, if translated into government policy would have wrecked New Zealand’s international security relationships. Just for a start. There has been no MP in the last 50 years with more dangerous views (although there is one new MP who is running a close second). I think Rebecca Kitteridge is a fine public servant. However I respectfully disagree with her decision.

Obsequious Andrew to crawl to UN hypocrites …

Andrew Little on Monday will face the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva for the five-yearly review of New Zealand’s human rights record.

On behalf of New Zealand, Little will in effect kowtow to a council whose members include Saudi Arabia, China, Somalia, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Qatar, Cuba, Senegal (condemned by Amnesty as well as the US State Department), and Burakino Faso (which has problems with torture and child marriage).

Little says of the review:

“The findings of the review are not legally binding, but are sometimes cited as persuasive in the courts and the Waitangi Tribunal.”

  A few years ago I went on a grog rehab course with some druggies who were trying to stay clean for 2 weeks. Anyone that thinks marijuana is all good needs help,the effect on those peoples lives was horrific- I heard stuff that I wouldn’t repeat on KB. .
