There is quite irresponsible journalism regarding the MP for Invercargill. The media is there to inform, instead it is playing to emotions gutter press style. It should be informing the public about what can or cannot be done.
For example Raido NZ expressed surprise that her electorate office is still open for business. Of course it is – the MP says it is business as usual. An electorate MP including an independent is entitled to an electorate office. As long as she is the electorate MP no one has any power to close it down. And she remains one until:
1. she resigns (which she could well do in due course).
2. mental illness – not at issue here.
3. Simon with Caucus agreement removes her under ‘waka hopper’ legislation. He would not be inclined to except as a last resort with political reaction being a major factor.
4. she is actually convicted of a ‘harmful digital communication’ offence in which case she automatically ceases to be a MP (as the maximum sentence would be three years, greater than the two year threshhold for the removal of a MP). No one can act against her just because she is under investigation or charged, except possibly a judge by reprimanding her in custody which is extremely unlikely.

  Well said peterwn. I had to correct a leftie who was trying to argue the other day that Bridges should stand her down from caucus, which of course is an absurd notion. The Left is also going on about there being “prima facie evidence” that Dowie has committed a crime; oh really? Considering that there hasn’t even been a prosecution filed against her (and nor is there likely to be, IMHO), what happened to the presumption of innocence.

    But this is the same Police Command who waded in and desperately tried to stop people talking about dodgy Clarke Gayford.
    They are corrupt.

      Because of implications for democracy the Police (and if need be Crown Law) should move swiftly on this one. The key facts are available already, it just needs a Crown Law opinion and a smart intern (it is still University vacation) should be able to research this and prepare a draft opinion fairly quickly).

        The resource-wasting police inquiry throws into light how potentially harmful the Harmful Digital Communications Act is.
        
        Sarah Dowie’s trumped-up potential “offence” relates to the ninth of the principles summarised in the act: “A digital communication should not incite or encourage an individual to commit suicide.”
        
        It’s hard to see how Dowie’s alleged statement, little more than trivial in the context of a romantic row, could tip someone over the edge.
        
        What “individual” is to be taken into account? I bet the act’s creators had in mind a school child or teenager harassed to the point of desperation, not an adult saying to a current or one-time romantic partner the equivalent of “bugger off – drop dead.” How many scores of thousands of folk have been told in or after love tiffs to “drop dead!” without committing suicide.
        
        The following “principles” outlined in the act seem to me more fit for a South Seas Soviet of Political Correctness than for a country with a British style political system:
        
        – A digital communication should not disclose sensitive personal facts about an individual.
        
        – A digital communication should not be grossly offensive to a reasonable person in the position of the affected individual.
        
        – A digital communication should not contain a matter that is published in breach of confidence.

        Is there a line between reporting and narking?
        
        The Southland Times, in an editorial today, says that, under the Digital Communications Act, it twice called for scrutiny of Sarah Dowie’s text to Ross. It says:
        
        “Promptly after news of the text message broke last October, and again in November, the Southland Times called for for scrutiny under the Digital Communications Act.
        
        “That it’s now happened is welcome, if not before time.”
        
        The newspaper called for a text to be scrutinised under legislation that threatens free speech – action against its local electorate M.P.
        
        The editorial adds that Dowie voted for the Digital Communications Act, which was introduced by National.
        
        The Southland Times itself is accessible on line. The editorial does not acknowledge whether the newspaper itself opposed or supported the Digital Communications Act when it was introduced.
        
        Am I alone in detecting schadenfreude in the editorial?
        
        If Sarah Dowie is the National candidate at the next election, the attitude the Southland Times takes will be influenced by the ownership of the newspaper after Stuff is put on the market by its new Australian owner.

      It’s absurd Milt, because a party leader cannot require an electorate MP to stand down or resign. The only people who can change Dowie’s status are Dowie herself, the Invercargill electorate of the National Party, by not selecting her as a candidate for 2020, or the voters of Invercargill.
      
      It’s quite different from the other cases this leftie was referring to, i.e. Curran and Whaitiri, where they were demoted from ministerial positions, but remained as MP’s.

      She did not mean separated MP’s where divorce would be a formality. SD separated a few years ago. The timeline of things at that time would be hazy and blurred. So she must be given the benefit of the doubt.

  There is another aspect where the media should know better. Media (especially the anonymous person who wrote the editoral on Stuff) should realise is if charged she would be entitled to a jury trial. This means the media should be treating the matter with the same caution as when writing about investigations into serious crimes so as to avoid potentially influencing jurors.

      In light of what has transpired I wouldn’t be so sure about that, but I don’t think it would be in the publc interest.
      I don’t think releasing the text, or part thereof, that is known about is in the public interest either at this stage.
      There must be gazillions of similar texts, photos etc of an embarrassing nature on phones up and down the country.
      If the police prosecute in this case they could be inundated with similar complaints.
      
      Maybe they should do what the UK police did with Ben Stokes. Wait a year before making a decision.

The release of all text messages will generate huge news media coverage; the sort of coverage that will have that dongbeater, dingbat and dickhead writhing on the floor in orgasmic delight.

    Stuff: The police investigation centres around a desperately angry and abusive 2.27am text allegedly sent from Dowie’s phone to fellow National MP Jami-Lee Ross, who says he’d had an affair with her.
    
    I am possibly one of the last three people in New Zealand to not have a cell phone and so I am unfamiliar with how they work, but would not a ‘picture’ of the alleged text with Sat, 11 Aug, 1:19AM on it, be the time it was sent, not as Stuff says 2.27am?
    
    Stuff: Amid a break-up firestorm of acrimony and recrimination, the sender reportedly told Ross he deserved to die.
    
    The whole end sentence in fact appears to be: “You deserve to die and leave your children in peace and your wife out of torment – fucker!” but Stuff claims this was “Amid a break-up firestorm of acrimony and recrimination”.
    
    No, apparently the “break-up” has been reported as being in May, so two and a half months earlier.
    Prior messages [to the text in question] were two weeks older and the messages after this one were sent some weeks later. This was sent, out of the blue, at 1:19 am …
    
    Not only is Stuff perhaps influencing potential jurors in any subsequent court case – as Peterson points out – Stuff is not even influencing them with facts.

    The communication was not extraordinary in the spat. Who made it a Police matter? I won’t name any particular “journalist”.

        I specifically remember reading a like on Stuff which heavily implied that her marriage had ended as a result. So that was a lie.

    I see JLR on Facebook out with his wife and kids promoting himself as a family man- She looked very uncomfortable. He and Dowie were living together in Wellington for at least a year before the leaks- whilst she was known as his Wellington wife no one knew if it was a flatting situation or more…. they came to their own conclusions. Could the media have made the complaint to police so they could then name her? Very very dirty politics here. The soon JLR is packed off to plant trees the better.

    So a likely history of the affair is Dowie was unhappy in her relationship, JLR and her strike up a relationship and JLR tells her that he is going to leave his wife so they can be together. After a while it becomes obvious to Dowie that he isn’t leaving and he is just having a bed pal in parliament for a bit of fun.
    
    She calls him on it and he says I’m not leaving my wife and breaks up. She is furious and calls him a narcissist, which we all now know he is.
    
    But of course this is pure speculation

      The female MPs issue was – He didnt tell his wife they were breaking up, was also shagging others in both paid and unpaid political circles. I feel so sorry for all the woman, especially his wife. That said politics is all about judgement and some very poor judgement has been on display.

      Even the MSM would have known all this (and long before the public did), the fact however that they are spinning it shows how much they have descended into the gutter.
      
      But hey as far as most of the MSM is concerned, National and Simon Bridges are convenient “collateral damage” and NZ’s most incompetent PM (Select) is yet again “protected” by this distraction (i.e. by deflecting “negative” media attention onto National for a while).

      This touches on the other reason media, Whaleoil etc are calling on Simon Bridges to do something now – morality. Since the MP appeared to have been separated at the time of the relationship with Jami and if Jami led her to believe he was also separated, there would seem to be no breach of morality requiring the party leader to act. A MP recently got married, no one questioned the nature of the relationship prior to the marriage, the leader did not stand the MP down from portfolios or Caucus because of the possible nature of the relationship before marriage.
      So the consequences for the MP are limited to:
      1. Simon reading the horoscope to her (in the British Navy sense where the Commanding Officer tells the delinquent that he or she has no future in the Navy) hence triggering her resignation.
      2. Not selecting her as the candidate in 2020 – either the Board or at electorate level.
      3. Giving her an impossibly low list position assuming she failed selection as a candidate.
      If she decides to hang in until 2020 the only coercive power available to Simon is to remove her using the ‘waka hopper’ legislation and he would be even more reluctant to use it in her case compared with Jami.

  So which judge would give her the mandatory 3 years, brave judge, thus leading to her expulsion as an MP. Given labour is against harsh sentences and would prefer home detention of a much shorter duration. Or is convicted of an offence that CARRIES a mandatory 3 year sentence, not the actual sentence handed out.

    It’s the gravity of the offence you are convicted of fluffy. When John Banks was convicted of electoral offences, he had to resign from Parliament because the maximum penalty was two years imprisonment. The fact the he was later exonerated by the Court of Appeal thus became irrelevant, because he had already resigned as he was required to by law.

    There is another possible outcome – discharge without conviction. The judge could consider that the consequences (loss of seat) are disproportionate compared with the offending, especially if the judge considers the communication to be only marginally harmful. Now that would create a firestorm.

      The police have all the power. Anyone who has upset someone else by saying something unkind online is now a criminal if the police want them to be.
      
      I agree the assumption is that police will take into account all sorts of factors not stated in the act, such as the race and gender of the people involved and whether the recipient was a nice person or not. That assumption is probably correct but you’d feel a bit nervous if it was the only thing standing between you and a criminal conviction.

  As far as I can see, the maximum penalty for an offence under s22 of the Act is two years. Also, it is necessary to prove an intention to cause harm, and that harm has been caused. In the circumstances, I can’t see it getting off the ground.

  There is a fifth reason for removal as a MP – becoming a citizen of a foreign country. This is not relevant here but is worthy of mention in case, because of Brexit, a NZ MP eligible for Irish citizenship applies for it so as to be eligible for an Irish passport (British passports cease to be EU passports upon Brexit).

    Irish law says that anyone who has an Irish born grandparent is an Irish citizen. So arguably, you don’t even need to apply for a passport. Isn’t that similar to what tripped up the Australian MP who had been decreed by New Zealand law to be a Kiwi? Barnaby somebody?

      But it would turn whether patriality via an Irish grandparent automatically confers citizenship or merely enables someone to apply for Irish citizenship. I looked at this a few years ago and it seems to be the latter.

  Before the charges were laid the media, and half of NZ, knew who the person was yet basically shut it down. Dowie’s possible offense is far less certain yet the MSM swarm all over it.

I’m not in favour of the proposed Christchurch CBD – Templeton cycleway.

Cycleways in general, good, I’m all in favour. The proposed route is also roughly good, passing by a lot of major destinations and would be useful to lots of people wanting to cycle.

What I object to is the specific design. To the cynic in me, it looks like “disrupt cars as much as possible” was a design goal every bit as important as cyclist safety. What could have been a positive, useful development very much looks to have been hijacked by social engineers using a civil works project to force people into behaving the way they want. I’m now concerned that other potential cycleways around Christchurch may be being abused in the same manner.

  Here in Tauranga they spent months “imporving” Cameron Road by Chadwick road.
  All they did was put in a deadly cycle lane.

    I note these ChCh cycleways will be paid for by the taxpayer and will include even more completely unnecessary traffic lights – at $200,000 to $400,000 each.
    
    Many of the current ChCh traffic lights are more than just unnecessary, also at the expense of the taxpayer and I do wonder if there is something dishonest going on in the city that, with a very small population, has more traffic lights than any other city in the southern hemisphere (according to a gentleman who sells traffic light components to ChCh).

      If your claim is that emissions of carbon based gases are trapping heat and causing warming, higher temperatures are evidence in favour and lower temperatures are evidence against. Otherwise your claim is not falsifiable and therefore not a scientific theory at all.

  I do have concerns when even Hosking this morning didn’t understand it at all, saying something like ‘If I buy a house for $100 and sell it for $200, shouldn’t I pay some tax’ – he didn’t mention the bright-line test and that the property ownership could be a much longer time, with years of inflation bringing up the price. While paying tax on rental income all those years.

Look as though the Life Insurance Industry is now the worse scoundrel than say Child Poverdy and/or the fiasco over Kiwibuild.
The number of Life Insurance Companies who left such as AMP and National Mutual leaves very small as people can no longer afford to Life Insure. The Banks of course have their fingers well in this though.
A media organised and Grant Robertson led obfuscation, who appears to now be in charge of many things.
Wow Princess if this is the best you can pull out for this year “Gawd elp us” as my Grandmother would say.

    Yes I used to sell insurance years ago.
    And I was conditioned never to switch a person from one comapny to another.
    It costs the person big time and other agents only did it just to get a commission.
    With insurance you build up a value with the company.
    If you start with a new company you are starting from scratch.
    I think some of the Reports recommendations are good.
    I was always amazed at companies like PINACLE offering to switch you to them for 10% less!

      They were simply leeching off the agents who sold the idea of insurance and it’s value to the policy holder while not having to pay someone to do that.

So the Herald has run a story about the Show Pony and Neve. I’ve just received my Labour Party throwaway entitled “Our Plan for New Zealand” and enclosed within were a couple of one pagers on my local Labour MPs… Hon Meka Whaitiri and Kiri Allan.

I was under the impression that Ministers of the Crown were Honourables… but didn’t realise that demoted Ministers could retain the title.
…Anyone know?

      There are various international bodies that have done that for you. The issue is that, as with evolution, there is no “irrefutable proof” that can satisfy someone who’s decided they just “don’t believe” something.
      
      However, “irrefutable proof” is hardly needed, because there’s a handy heuristic: if we send shitloads of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, in theory we should expect to see an overall warming of the Earth’s climate. And, oh look, we’re seeing an overall warming of the Earth’s climate.
      
      So, the fact that events are following the trajectory that theory would lead us to expect is evidence that the theory is correct. At which point, the question shifts to “Do we have evidence the warming is caused by something else instead?”
      
      As with evolution, the overwhelming majority of the relevant scientists are saying that so far the available evidence all backs the theory, with no evidence backing an alternative explanation.
      
      At that point, truculent non-scientists who want to play “don’t believe it” as though it were some kind of trump card just make themselves look foolish and including them in discussions about the science just wastes everybody’s time.

        Depends what you mean by “settled.” In science, you’re correct that there is no “settled” in the sense of “Right, we’ve made our decision, so any further evidence that turns up can be safely ignored.”
        
        However, in science there is very much “settled” in the sense of “Right, all the evidence is pointing towards this theory being correct and no evidence pointing towards an alternate theory, so for all intents and purposes we can treat this theory as correct unless something turns up to suggest otherwise.”
        
        Evolution and climate change are both in that second category of “settled” science. The person who turns up evidence to refute either theory will not just win a Nobel prize but also go down in history as one of the world’s most famous scientists – that’s a pretty damn strong incentive, but funnily enough so far no-one’s found evidence to refute them.

      Evolutionary biologists would strongly dispute that claim, but even if we accept it at face value for the sake of argument, the theory of evolution still holds.   In an effort to understand the issue, I consulted Wikipedia. There I learned that from a study of 4000 peer reviewed scientific articles about climate change, 97% considered that climate change was occurring and the main cause was the emission of greenhouse gases. Can someone point me to a definitive argument for the contrary view, which as I understand it accepts that the climate is changing but there is no proof that it is caused by humans?

    That 97% study is a classic. By a former (religious) cartoonist called Cook. There are so many documented issues with the study that it is quite a subject on its own.
    Climate Audit has some great breakdown material on that and many other studies, it is a site run by a statistician who’s hobby is analysing the statistics used in climate research papers. He has an impressive record of causing the withdrawl of a number of high profile papers.
    Second place to visit would be Climate Etc. The blog is run by Judith Curry, recently retired Caltech professor and climatologist. She has a number of papers on uncertainty that lay things out well.

    While Wikipedia is often cited as a reference, one should be careful doing so.
    
    One can also look to the litany of doom and gloom prognostications that have been published since the 1980s with regard to climate change, and compare this to what has actually happened, and then compare this to historical records.
    
    You could point to 97% of scientists, but you should also remember that just because a consensus has been reached, doesn’t mean that the science should be settled. Prior to 1947, it was widely accepted that a plane could not fly faster that the speed of sound.

    The IPCC was set up to solely consider the role of man-made CO2’s effect on Climate.
    
    It does not bother itself with the many other variables that influence our Global climate.
    Many of the original scientists ceased working on the IPCC reports when they discovered their work identifying natural variables and uncertainities in data were being left out of final reports.

I have been watching the media like a supertanker, reluctantly awakening to the truth about her, and have noted with interest how the photos they choose have slowly transformed from ‘girlish, laughing superstar’ Jacinda to ‘haunted and tired alone’ Jacinda.
This is merely an observation.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
The fact of it is, that Jacindamania is likely to end up as ‘jacindafatigue’.
How many people saw the headline about her being ‘nervous’ about announcing her pregnancy and thought, like me, “WTF is the relevance of this?”, and declined to read it out of sheer boredom with the subject?
Now, in order to maintain relevance, Jacinda is forced to pull out ‘the next big thing’ and of course, people are increasingly rolling their eyes at the next hair-brained initiative she brain-farts, in order to maintain the illusion she is … well, the fact is, I’ve actually I’ve forgotten what she is… and it appears that many of her cabinet have too.

  The 2020 election will be fought on the basis that Winston would be de facto Prime Minister and that Jacinda’s pre-election role would be glorified communications adviser and speechmaker.
  While Winston’s bargaining power would be limited after the 2020 election, Jacinda is unlikely to want to bargain with Winston and will be content to run with the status quo. Consequently the scenario that there could be a NZF-National coalition is extremely unlikely, which means arguments such as voting NZF to keep National ‘honest’, act as a handbrake etc would not apply.         Regarding predictions, the IPCC in AR5 note that actual observed Temperatures are below 90% of all the Temperatures the CMIP5 Simulations/Models predict from around 2005 to when the report was done in 2013.
        In other words the Models are too hot.
        I think Kev is right that AR3 stated how hard it is to predict because the system is too variable.
        You know they don’t consider the effect of Clouds in modelling because it’s too hard?
        
        Frankly the whole Temp dataset is a joke. There’s massive gaps in coverage and real issues with the accuracy of readings.

      What we see typically is the summaries for policy makers. These are political documents created and agreed on by politicians in periodic fly and party-up fests.
      The actual Assesment Report follows the Summary, 1000+ pages a year later. The maths alone traps the IPCC. Models of a chaotic system with insufficient data to a degree of precision that yields nonsense has to suggest moral turpitude.

What’s going on with the weather reports in this country? We were getting told it might hit 40C this week. Didn’t happen. Now it’s maybe 37. Blenheim got to 35 or so the other day. Kelburn ‘shattered’ a temperature record by hitting 30.3C. Previous record unspecified, but I doubt it was much below that.
Auckland forecast was for 30C yesterday. Didn’t get close. They were forecasting 28C for today, now reduced to 27, and likely to only be 26C.
“The ‘worst ‘ is yet to come”, they tell us, as though warm weather is a bad thing.
Do they think we’re fucken idjuts?
And don’t they have a responsibility to be honest with us?

    I looked at that poll where you voted no to a CGT along with 2/3 of respondents.
    There is no information there about what it entails so how do you or anyone else pro or con have any idea what you are voted for?
    As it happens there is a form of CGT in force right now, only not actually called that.
    If you buy a second house and flog it off within a certain amount of time you must pay tax on the profit; i.e. a tax on a capital gain.

      I think that cap belongs to time when we had sensible interest rates. My opinion is that we are in a gigantic asset bubble through massive, improper, Central Bank credit expansion. This event may be historic as it is very widespread creating effectively a new class of Barons. Savers get no rewards but the richest are further aggrandised.
      Economics appear suspended temporarily. Resumption has to occur–will the COL be able to handle that?

      Schools going back so time for the hot days to arrive!!
      I live in Wellington. Last year I was away most of December and we had a friend house sitting. When I got back the day after New Years Day she was panicking a bit because our lawn had dried up but she had been scared to water it because of restrictions. I told her not to worry it happened most years.
      This year they have just started to dry up in the last day or so. So a month later. The cicadas have not started yet –normally that happens around New Year.
      I “listen” to nature not the “experts”.

  SR: When I was at intermediate School in Nelson many years ago they used to take us to Spooners Range to plant trees every year. This was from in them days Standard 4 at Primary School with form one and two at intermediate. It was only one day but by time that all School had participated they would have planted a few trees. But I suppose nowadays with health safety laws they are not allowed to do this now.

  It’s also very motivating if one doesn’t enjoy the work or want to make it a career: there was nothing like working in a factory one summer to make me study hard for my degree!
  
  Plus how about meeting some real working folks if you have socialist tendencies. Find out what they really want: a better, wealthier career for their children. Not a heap of government interference.

National are promising to index tax bracket creep with inflation every three years. He also mentioned how National was a party who believes in equal opportunity, not outcomes. ‘Expert opinion’ is just another ‘opinion’. Folks can listen to it, and do the opposite. Same with all the sort of rules that people want to impose about Sarah Dowie.
If enough good people of Invercargill decide not to vote for her, then it’s decided, and I am fine with it.
For me, if I could vote in Invercargil I would vote for Sarah Dowie. She’s one of the good ones.

nterim targets for the Government’s housing scheme KiwiBuild have been dropped, as Jacinda Ardern and Phil Twyford say the program is being “re-calibrated.”

The programme has hit a bump in the road, with the Housing Minister admitting the Government would fall well short of 1000 homes by the end of the first year, instead building just 300.

On Wednesday, Mr Twyford and the Prime Minister addressed media and said although the interim targets are no more, the original goal of 100,000 houses in 10 years remains the same.

“Interim targets haven’t been a useful way to demonstrate our delivery program,” said SLG.

Joking between workmates led to a Dunedin man firing a staple through his colleague’s skull, a court has heard.

The victim, who was unaware of the seriousness of the situation at the time, went to hospital where they discovered the 35mm stainless steel staple was embedded in his brain. Doctors, worried about the possibility of infection, were forced to operate on the man, the court heard.

The situation was classed as ”life threatening”, but the victim survived surgery…

Matthew James Varcoe (24), an aluminium joiner, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with reckless disregard for the safety of others. Judge Michael Turner called the defendant’s actions ”stupid and reckless” and he stressed that the victim could have been killed. …..

On June 1, the pair were at work in the harbourside industrial area. The victim was repairing a sliding door while Varcoe used a staple gun at his work station.

”There was some light-hearted banter between the victim and defendant which resulted in the defendant firing staples from a staple gun … towards the victim and his co-worker,” a police summary said. As the staples only measured 15mm, they had no effect.

As the verbal jousting between the men became more pointed, Varcoe walked over and slapped the victim in the face.

”This resulted in a tussle between both parties which appeared to be light-hearted at first, with a lot of shoving and pushing, but the intensity increased and the defendant became more aggressive,” the court heard.

Varcoe picked up a bigger staple gun, powered by a compressed-air line. The victim grabbed at his arm as the defendant pointed the improvised weapon at him. Varcoe, though, was able to press the gun against the top of his colleague’s head.

The safety guard was disengaged. He pulled the trigger. The 35mm staple penetrated the man’s cranium and lodged in his brain.

It was the last time the pair spoke. ….

      I have been a Teacher and I’ve also worked as a qualified gardener .
      It’s a bugger doing the School athletics on a hot February day on Athletic Park…. so a few hours 1 day/year…. not really comparable with outdoor work in full heat of the day… November to end of February….
      though it was the freezing mornings in Winter.. gardening in a deep frost that convinced me that I probably wasn’t designed for a life of hard labour outdoors.

      Here’s a name for you – I did several summers rousing for Collins Brown (?) in the Wairarapa, late 80s early 90s.
      
      I’m going back a while here, but up at 4.30 – 5am, drive to meeting point, van to client’s farm, 7am start, 4x 2 hour runs with 15 minute smokos and 30 minutes for lunch.
      
      Go home, shower, and on the piss and back up again next morning to do it all again – with the odd unexpected day off for rain as you will understand nasska.

        It was also a point of pride as to who was the fittest, who could pull the most wool, who’s counts were the highest etc etc.

  That’s fine. The UK will, of course, take all the meat and dairy that the EU would otherwise slap tariffs on. And our close cultural relationship with the UK, (4/5ths of us having UK or Irish heritage, apparently) means that we will be much better off. We can send them food parcels and do some knitting with our wool for their brave boys at the front. We can send sides of frozen lamb to them, as well as large slabs of butter. In return, they will send us union officials and soccer players. Vive Brexit.

        Our “yard” was the least union organised in the Wairarapa & I along with two others were always considered to be bosses’ men. We were designated senior drivers although there were some who’d been there much longer.
        
        If you didn’t fit into the egalitarian mould life tended to be difficult. Every time there was a strike I’d go fencing for a cocky I knew rather than man a picket line……my family weren’t suffering for a pack of scum commie unionists.
        
        Things got so bad that at one stage the union delegate threatened me by telling me “we’ll get your wife & kids”. From then on it was war.
        
        Overall, I didn’t win but then again I didn’t lose.

        Central/north for most of my time but we retired to Masterton where our daughters live.
        
        But when we sold up we decided to take a break before we committed ourselves. Instead of a McMansion with half an acre of grounds we bought a modest 2bdrm ONO in Masterton & a house in the Far North.
        
        Which is where I’m heading to in ten days time.

The Arctic Ocean is warming up. Icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report by the Commerce Dept at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, sea hunters all over point to radical change in climate conditions. And hitherto unheard of temperatures in the Arctic zone exploration expeditions report scarcely any ice as far north as 81 degrees; soundings show the Gulf Stream very warm, masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, and it goes on and on. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.

Sounds very familiar and in step with the warning we are getting. BUT it was published by the American Meteorological Society Monthly Weather Review in November 1922.

        Agafia’s family were Old Believers of the Orthodox faith.
        
        Forty or fifty years ago more than a hundred Old Believers were settled in Southland as refugees. I think that they had fled Communism to Manchuria, then when the Communists talk over China (and Manchuria) they fled first to Hong Kong.
        
        I wonder what became of them. They had scores of religious non-work holidays during the year, but a friend told me that the sons of the Old Believer families often got jobs at the freezing works, and quite quickly blended with the locals.
        
        Perhaps they have moved to join Old Believer populations in Australia or North America, or even returned to Russia.

A Christchurch “Asian fusion” restaurant that was highlighted over its non-PC menu has gone under. It gave dishes non-PC names, playing on Chinese novices’ English pronunciation.

The restaurant, Bamboozle, had on its menu for a couple of years dishes such as “chirri an garrik prawn dumpring,” “suk sum teet,” “ho lee kok,” “won ton kouw kum now” and “yum ee kouw patt.”

A restaurant reviewer of the Christchurch Press about a year ago encountered the menu and blasted it.

A subsequent Stuff poll with more than 19,000 respondents found that 60 per cent thought the menu was funny and that people “should lighten up”.

However, the then-Racism Czarina, Susan ~~Devoid~~ Devoy, condemned the menu. Reporters gained critical opinions from a Massey psychology lecturer, James Liu; a “marketing professional,” Julian Liew-Young; and from the Chinese Friendship Society’s national president, Dave Bromwich, who labelled the menu as “bordering on racism”.

The Bamboozle shut its doors on Saturday night. It wasn’t alone in difficulty, the newspaper reports. A French restaurant in Christchurch since 2008 has collapsed with debts of more than $100,000.

The owner and chef,Phillip Kraal, has participated in charity events in Christchurch, including boxing.

Evidence of ~~Judas~~ Whinnie Peters’ back-down on the migrant rush to NZ … this is from a Radio NZ report on falling numbers of tertiary students coming to NZ from China:

Independent Tertiary Education New Zealand is the largest organisation for private institutions. Its chairperson Craig Musson said his sector was not alone.

“Everyone else is down as well, so I don’t think it’s only in the PTE [private training establishments] market.”

Mr Musson said enrolments from China and India had fallen in the private sector, but the introduction last year of tougher work permit rules had not had as big an impact as feared.

And here’s the kicker:

“The changes weren’t as Draconian as we were expecting, which is good.

“Time will tell and we’ll be working with the immigration minister to look at how we can try and make sure there’s no major effect over the next two or three years.”

A Blenheim businessman accused of hog-tying a teenager he found in his niece’s bedroom has refused diversion and will go to trial.

The man, who cannot be named, had allegedly been alerted to a suspicious person on his property and called police shortly before checking his niece’s bedroom last June.

Police claimed the man dragged the teen outside, punched him and then tied his limbs together, before taking a photograph of the boy as evidence.

The man was charged with assault, but denied the charge, saying he never punched the boy but was restraining an intruder.
